Hey Frank, what do you think about Margaret Thatcher's grim legacy?

Ugh, she's in the news again.

I don't want to talk about her because she is so incredibly unlikeable. In person she comes across as "old-timey Victorian woman" who, if she were a woman today, would be "just so tacky, everyone would hate her forever," but because her actual politics were horrifying enough to make her worthy of a hate boner, she will always be remembered forever because everyone is terrified of what she represents.

(On the other hand, she definitely did kill a lot of people, which is worth noting)

Che Guevara- Just his iconic face in the background would be great. Probably one of the school’s only doctors which would be an exasperating job. Calls his friends ‘comrade.’

Lennon, Losurdo and the bureaucracy

In some parts of this interview for the trotskist newspaper “The Red Mole“, John Lennon seems to be more of a materialist than the ‘marxists’ that were interviewing him. For example:

JOHN: “After the revolution you have the problem of keeping things going, of sorting out all the different views. It’s quite natural that revolutionaries should have different solutions, that they should split into different groups and then reform, that’s the dialectic, isn’t it – but at the same time they need to be united against the enemy, to solidify a new order. I don’t know what the answer is; obviously Mao is aware of this problem and keeps the ball moving.”

BLACKBURN: “The danger is that once a revolutionary state has been created, a new conservative bureaucracy tends to form around it. This danger tends to increase if the revolution is isolated by imperialism and there is material scarcity.”

JOHN: “Once the new power has taken over they have to establish a new status quo just to keep the factories and trains running.”

BLACKBURN: “Yes, but a repressive bureaucracy doesn’t necessarily run the factories or trains any better than the workers could under a system of revolutionary democracy.”

JOHN: “Yes, but we all have bourgeois instincts within us, we all get tired and feel the need to relax a bit. How do you keep everything going and keep up revolutionary fervour after you’ve achieved what you set out to achieve? Of course Mao has kept them up to it in China, but what happens after Mao goes? Also he uses a personality cult. Perhaps that’s necessary; like I said, everybody seems to need a father figure.

These ideas that Lennon had at that time are very close to what the italian marxist philosopher Domenico Losurdo said in a debate in Brazil about “the life of Trotsky”, by the occasion of 100th aniversary of the Russian Revolution (sorry about the bad automatic translation):

-1573: ocurrió Asedio de Alkmaar. Primera victoria de las Provincias Unidas de Países Bajos en la Guerra de los Ochenta Años. El Asedio de Alkmaar fue efectuado por tropas españolas al mando del general Don Fadrique y las Provincias Unidas o República de los Siete Países Bajos Unidos, estado formado por las siete provincias del Norte de los Países Bajos (Frisia, Groninga, Güeldres, Holanda, Overijssel, Utrecht y Zelanda), finalizó con la retirada de la tropa española, debido a que estas no lograron mantener el asedio. Alkmaar (Holanda) fue la primera ciudad controlada por los rebeldes holandeses durante la Guerra de los Ochenta Años en resistir el asedio de las tropas de la corona española. El 8 de octubre todavía es celebrado cada año en la ciudad. Un refrán holandés en relación al asedio dice que «la victoria empieza en Alkmaar». Los españoles buscaban controlar la parte septentrional de la provincia de Holanda, y en principio y por medio de conversaciones con protestantes del interior de la ciudad de Alkmaar, lograron tomar el poder, pero la resistencia de las Provincias Unidas y su posterior contra ataque impidió que sus oponentes se apoderaran del territorio holandés y provocó la retirada del lugar de los enemigos.

-1948: nace Johnny Ramone, músico estadounidense, único guitarrista de la banda punk  The Ramones (m. 2004). John Cummings mejor conocido como Johnny Ramone. -1957: incendio en reactor nuclear de Windscale-Sellafield en Liverpool, origina una fuga radiactiva que contamina 300 km2.  La central nuclear fabrica plutonio con fines militares. El incendio se mantiene durante 16 horas. Nadie muere en él, pero se lanzan a la atmósfera toneladas de partículas altamente contaminadas. El informe sobre el incendio de la planta nuclear es censurado por el primer ministro británico, Harold Macmillan, que teme que este incidente dañe el acuerdo de defensa nuclear entre su país y EE.UU. Este accidente nuclear será, según los expertos, uno de los peores que jamás haya padecido nuestro planeta.

-1965: nace C.J. Ramone, músico estadounidense.

-1967: es capturado en Bolivia el guerrillero argentino Ernesto ‘Che’ Guevara. Resulta capturado durante una escaramuza con un destacamento especial del ejército boliviano, el guerrillero argentino Ernesto “Che” Guevara, que jugó un importante papel en la Revolución cubana. En el transcurso de la refriega ha resultado herido. Lo trasladan preso al cercano pueblo de La Higuera, donde lo retendrán en el edificio de la escuela. Al día siguiente será ejecutado sin más.

-1970: nace Matt Damon, actor estadounidense (Good Will Hunting, Saving Private Ryan, Bourne). Su carrera se inició a raíz del éxito de la película Good Will Hunting (1997), a partir de un guion escrito con su amigo Ben Affleck. Fue ganador del premio Óscar al mejor guion original por Good Will Hunting y nominado a mejor actor por el mismo trabajo. Damon desde entonces ha participado en películas de éxito comercial como Saving Private Ryan (1998) o dando vida a Jason Bourne.

-1971: John Lennon graba el tema ‘Imagine’. Corría el año 1971 y John Lennon había grabado un álbum firmado por la Plastic Ono Band que formaba parte de la campaña que, después de dejar los Beatles, emprendió junto a Yoko Ono y sus amigos a favor de la paz y en contra de la guerra de Vietnam. A comienzos del otoño de aquel año, Lennon se encerró en los estudios de grabación junto a Phil Spector que fue el elegido para la producción de un álbum que se construiría alrededor de una canción, “Imagine”, grabada un día como hoy 8 de octubre . Finalmente “Imagine” se convirtió en un himno por la paz mundial que trascendió todas las fronteras y las lenguas.

-2007: Costa Rica, aprueba el tratado de libre comercio con Estados Unidos.

-1985: nace Bruno Mars, cantante y compositor estadounidense. Nacido y criado en Honolulu, Hawaii, dentro de una familia de músicos, Mars comenzó a crear música desde una edad temprana, y actuó en muchos escenarios de su pueblo natal a lo largo de su niñez. Se graduó de la escuela secundaria y se mudó a Los Angeles, para perseguir su carrera musical. Mars produjo canciones para otros artistas, y es cofundador del equipo de producción The Smeezingtons. El 4 de octubre de 2010, lanzó su álbum debut, Doo-Wops & Hooligans. Logró colocar en el primer puesto sus sencillos Just the Way You Are y Grenade alrededor del mundo. -1997: nace Bella Thorne, actriz estadounidense (Blended, Frenemies, Alexander and the Terrible Horrible No Good Very Bad Day). Es mejor conocida por su papel de CeCe Jones en la serie original de Disney Channel, Shake It Up. Debutó como cantante en 2011 cuando lanzó su primer sencillo «Watch Me» a dúo con Zendaya para la banda sonora de Shake It Up, Shake It Up: Break It Down.
