When I read about Chef Lentswe’s sad and sudden passing I was in absolute shock. Just last week he cooked so beautifully for us at Fatti’s and Moni’s Afro-Italian Experience. In November he dazzled us with his talent and charisma and passion at a Fan-Tastic affair. What a gift. What grace. My heartfelt condolences to Lentswe Bhengu-Mafoko’s family and loved ones. May you be comforted in your time of grief. We hold you in our hearts and heartfelt prayers. (at Summer Place, Hyde Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/CpU5yz_KNij/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Binge watching Cheeky Palate because of episode 6 from season 1. It's an interesting show, which I almost didn't watch because I don't care for Phat Joe at all. I am learning new things and some people have actually shocked me. If you want to preserve your innocence, then this show is not for you. Episode 5 reminded me of Mrs Sithole from Bhobhobho. She attended one of our HCBC training courses eMission centre and the things that she discovered there shocked her and made her cry. I still feel guilty that she lost her innocence at one of my training courses. She was in her late 60s by then. May she rest in peace. I am also learning about people's real lives, e.g. The chef Lentswe Bhengu is from a polygamous family in KZN. I have always assumed that he was from Capetown 🤷🏾 I like how polygamy has been so normalized in recent years. Bab' Ndabe explained how the Mvelase's came up with the concept and how it was matriarchal in its origin. It was an interesting and educational episode. The adoption episode reminded me of 2008 and how I wanted to adopt twin boys but it wasn't to be. 2008 was a hard year for me emotionally. Mzawa made me snap out of it in a way that only she could get me to do it. That one can very easily gather me together aqede ukutetema. I wanna suggest this show to certain people. If you get a showmax link in your inbox, just know that you are one of the 'certain people'. Ciao! https://www.instagram.com/p/CPEvZwwJsJs/?utm_medium=tumblr

Dance, drama, food & fashion at The Playhouse
Drama, dance, music, food and fashion are on the cards over the last weekend of May at the Playhouse.
We Are Still Marching
Wrapping up The Playhouse Company’s New Stages season is the back-by-popular-demand dance production We Are Still Marching. Choreographed by Sunnyboy Motau of Moving Into Dance Mophatong (MIDM), this acclaimed work will feature the dancers from two award-winning dance companies: MIDM and The Playhouse Dance Residency (PDR). PDR scooped the Standard Bank Ovation Award and the Encore Award at the 2015/16 National Arts Festival in Grahamstown for its piece If the World Was Listening. The piece explores the struggles faced by women in Southern Africa from the apartheid era until the present day. Public performances will take place on 27 and 28 May. Tickets are R60.
Also on The Playhouse Company’s New Stages programme is /’fri:dəm/ – freedom! – a retrospective look at what our freedom means to us today featuring the Playhouse Actors Studio. Using classical South African theatre works, images and sound, the play seeks to find the meaning of what we have achieved as a country; what challenges we have faced and how we deal with them. Devised by The Playhouse Actors Studio, with research and curation by Matjamela Motloung; and directing mentorship by theatre stalwart Ralph Lawson. /’fri:dəm/ – freedom! is presented by The Playhouse Company in the Loft Theatre from 26 to 28 May at 14h00 and 19h30. Tickets R60.
May 26 and 27 will see The Playhouse transform into a melting pot of African culture through a celebration of arts, food and fashion during The Playhouse Africa aLIVE! Festival in commemoration of Africa Month.
Lentswe Bhengu
Experience first-hand the culinary expertise of celebrity chefs Lentswe Bhengu (Africa on a Plate, Taste Africa fame) on May 26 at 17h40 and Siphokazi Mdlankomo (author of My Little Black Recipe Book and host of cooking show Let’s eat with Siphokazi) on May 27 at 17h40 as they conduct live cooking demonstrations.
Enjoy a culinary trail through Nigeria, Mozambique, Ethiopia, Morocco and Swahili Cuisine (Tanzania & Kenya) via our food stalls. Each respective stall is designed to provide patrons with a taste and cultural experience fashioned on its respective African country. Feel a range of fabrics from each country, smell various spices specific to their regions, see arts and crafts from their community, taste their unique cuisine… and the best part is, delicious eats are for sale too!
Take a visual journey through Africa at our craft stalls with an array of woodwork, jewellery, beadwork, metal work, small ornaments and more on show.
Then – also as part of the festival and curated by fashionista extraordinaire, Derrick Mhlongo – The Playhouse Fashion Show celebrates all things African, by Africans, for the African and the global community at large. Expect to see top designers Amanda Laird Cherry, Nguni Shades, Zarth, Lindiwe Kuzwayo and more featured on our ramp. The show takes place on May 26 at 20h10.
All tickets for We Are Still Marching and /’fri:dəm/ – freedom! are available via Computicket or Shoprite Checkers. Discounted block bookings are available through (031) 369 9407. General entry to The Playhouse Africa aLIVE! Festival is free. Discounted parking available at The Royal Hotel parkade and The Albany Hotel Parkade.
