Leo and Pipo

Leo and Pipo are street artists from the Eastern Suburbs of Paris, whose street art project of the same name, which began in 2008, has since become a large online collaboration, with collage artists participating from all over the globe. According to the creators, for the past five years, they have allowed over 250 creative collage artists to participate in the collaboration. They have said that they were particularly motivated by their desire ‘to see the perception of these artists vis-à-vis …(their) universe.’

The project is powerful and direct whilst still being extremely broad. It allows for a lot of individual creative expression, even being described by the creators as “an open structure”. Thus the whole concept is driven by freedom, with the only direction being, to include two anonymous characters within their imaginary portraits. These are mainly sourced from old family photo albums in order to retain a similar aesthetic. The creators have described the project as an expression of a collective memory. By acting as a step back in time, each portrait evokes a shared emotion that is familiar to all of us.

Above I have provided a few examples of The Leo and Pipo Project. I wanted to highlight the fact that these images were all created by different collage artists but somehow in sharing a particular aesthetic (In this case the use of old black and white portraits) seemingly work well together, even though they have been compiled using different techniques and methods.
