So di essere entrata un po' a gamba tesa, ma a volte mi sembra che sia o tutto o niente.　» 　　ʟᴇᴏɴᴀʀᴅ　«　Preferisco le persone decise da quelle indecise. Due caffè corretti con liquore al cioccolato?　» 　　ᴘᴇʏᴛᴏɴ ᴠɪʀɢɪɴɪᴀ　«　Sarebbe perfetto! Grazie mille! Adoro il cioccolato! Beh, allora vado subito al punto. Ho sentito parlare di te da mia sorella Indiana, e so che sei all'apice di una delle aziende cosmetiche che fanno da padrone nello scenario mondiale. Dal momento che mi concentro principalmente su ristrutturazioni ma anche arredamento, mi piacerebbe unire le due cose e fare una collaborazione. Volevo sapere se avevi già pensato alla prossima campagna pubblicitaria.　» 　　ʟᴇᴏɴᴀʀᴅ　«　Oh questo è molto interessante, in realtà no, non ci ho ancora pensato, la prossima campagna sarà per una linea di cosmetici in collaborazione con una nota ex modella. ─ A settembre poi partirà la campagna di fine anno. Perché?　» 　　ᴘᴇʏᴛᴏɴ ᴠɪʀɢɪɴɪᴀ　«　E avevi in mente qualche idea precisa per la location? Perché da qui arriva la mia proposta… Mi piacerebbe poter seguire la parte di arredamento scenico. Sto collaborando con AD Magazine, non so se lo conosci e mi piacerebbe portare qualcosa di diverso rispetto al solito interno di una casa. Il tuo marchio darebbe sicuramente un tocco in più.　» 　　ʟᴇᴏɴᴀʀᴅ　«　Per la nostra campagna interna no, a dire il vero, è tutto da stabilire, di solito se ne occupano al reparto marketing prima di venire da me… ─ Ma la cosa si fa interessante e potrei invertire i ruoli!　» 　　ᴘᴇʏᴛᴏɴ ᴠɪʀɢɪɴɪᴀ　«　Ho preferito andare alla fonte e venire da te. So che teoricamente tutte le decisioni devono passare da te e dunque eccomi qui. Mi piacerebbe però sottoporti qualche idea, prima di decidere ecco.　» 　　ʟᴇᴏɴᴀʀᴅ　«　Sarei ben lieto di vedere e parlare con te di ogni possibile idea.　» 　　ᴘᴇʏᴛᴏɴ ᴠɪʀɢɪɴɪᴀ　«　Così mi lusinghi! Ad ogni modo, mi piacerebbe farti vedere qualche idea prima. Immagino che abbiamo tempo, ma nemmeno così tanto. Alla fine del mese si terrà un evento organizzato dalla mia famiglia, al Country Residence negli Hamptons ed in quell'occasione seguirò la parte di arredamento. Potresti venire a vedere e magari posso farti vedere alcune proposte, che cosa ne dici?　» 　　ʟᴇᴏɴᴀʀᴅ　«　Ho proprio ricevuto l'invito qualche giorno fa. Sono assolutamente dentro! Ci vedremo all'evento e vedrò cosa hai mente dopo di che vaglieremo delle proposte. Che ne pensi? Considera che la campagna successiva deve uscire ad Ottobre.　» 　　ᴘᴇʏᴛᴏɴ ᴠɪʀɢɪɴɪᴀ　«　Oh perfetto! Sarebbe.. Sarebbe davvero perfetto! Sono dell'idea che alcune cose bisogna vederle con gli occhi. Potrei farti vedere mille progetti, ma sulla carta è una cosa, nella realtà è un'altra. Devo correre, ho capito ahaha. Ti ringrazio davvero per quest'incontro, Leonard! E anche per il caffè!　» 　　ʟᴇᴏɴᴀʀᴅ　«　Useremo la realtà come banco di prova, la trovo un'idea originale. Iniziamo col piede giusto. Leap Year traditions: marriages & mayors

You may be familiar with the Irish tradition of women being allowed to propose to men on February 29. The legend is that Saint Brigid and Saint Patrick agreed to allow unmarried women to pop the question once every four years. Over the centuries the tradition spread and grew to include consequences if a man said no to a Leap Day proposal–mostly in the form of buying gifts for the asker to make up for his refusal.

Unfortunately, this tradition took on a distinctly misogynistic flavor, as exemplified by the Leap Day postcards in the Newberry Digital Collections. These cards from the early 20th century show caricatures of “undesirable” women determined to use the Leap Day tradition in order to bully, trick, or even physically threaten a man into marriage.

Three towns in Illinois took it one step further, swearing in women as members of the town government and police force for the day with a satirical goal: to arrest and fine unmarried men. According to a Life magazine feature in 1948, Leap Year cops would jokingly “nab” bachelors and demand payments such as a “fine of $10, two slips, two pairs of nylons and one drink for the cop.”

Similar legal quirks seem to apply in the Leap Year postcards. Hopeful brides appear to have free access to all manner of weapons and are not bound by such laws as the speed limit. The postcards, of course, are villainizing them for their creative strategies. God forbid women have hobbies.
