Measure of associations Exercise 3.7 1. Rate ratio comparing current smokers with nonsmokers Rate ration = rate of current smokers/rate of nonsmokers (Rate of current smokers = rate of smokers per 1000 persons-years = 1.3) (Rate of nonsmokers = rate of nonsmokers per 1000 persons-years = 0.07) Rate ration = 1.3/0.07 =18.57 2. Rate ratio comparing ex-smokers who quit at least 20 years ago with nonsmokers Rate ration = rate of ex-smokers quitting at 20 years/rate of nonsmokers (Rate of ex-smokers quitting at 20 years = rate per 1000 persons-years = 0.19) (Rate of nonsmokers = rate per 1000 persons-years = 0.07) Rate ration = 0.19/0.07 = 2.71 3. What are the public health implications of these findings? Based on the calculation above, it is evident that the rate of lung cancer incidences among smokers is way too high, 18 times, as compared to nonsmokers. This leads to the conclusion that, smoking is a factor contributing to the risk of lung cancer. This conclusion is further evidenced by the fact that, rate ration of lung cancer among those who quit smoking after 20 years as compared to nonsmokers is significantly less, approximately 3 times (CDC, 2006). This finding points to the fact that, smoking is a risk factor for lung cancer. Public health implications for these findings are that, those who are smoking should be encouraged to stop forthwith as every puff is a step towards developing lung cancer. More importantly, those who haven’t smoked should be encouraged not to start. Exercise 3.8 Odds ration of tuberculosis Odds ration = (exposed ill × unexposed well)/ (exposed well × unexposed well) = (28 × 133)/ (129 × 4) = 3724/516 = 7.22 Odds ration as compared to rate ration Rate ration = rate ration of exposed/rate ration of unexposed (Rate ratio of exposed = ill in East wing/total number of inmates in East wing) = 28/157 = 0.19 (Rate ratio of unexposed = ill in West wing/total number of inmates in West wing) = 4/137 = 0.03 Rate ration = 0.19/0.03 = 6.33 The odds ratio for developing tuberculosis in the prison is 7.22, while the rate ration is 6.33. The difference between the two is 0.89, which translates to 14 percent of the rate ration. While the odds ratio is a measure for the association between exposure and outcome, rate ratio is a measure of the relative risk. As a result, it would be expected that for a disease with high outcome, the odds ratio and rate ratio would be on opposite extremes. However, popularity of a disease is not quantifiable on a standard figure for example; a few incidences of polio are considered popular, while thousand cases of common cold are considered a non-issue. Therefore, the difference between the odds ratio and the rate ratio in this case is considered to be a largely a personal-judgment case. Nevertheless, and given there are individuals who are immune to tuberculosis, while other are not, the 28 cases of illness among the exposed and 4 cases the unexposed is considered to be a practical real-life scenario. As a result it would be considered that, tuberculosis wouldn’t be categorized as a popular disease, thus the difference between the odd ratio and the odd ratio wouldn’t be significantly divergent hence, 14% difference is considered practical. Media and Government: A Love-Hate Relationship
Tumblr media
Dating back from the ancient civilizations, there is a system of government and different forms of media. Obviously, as the world evolves and continues to change, different societal institutions were affected by the various changes of the world. As the people continue to strive and adapt, big institutions like government and media are no exception for that as they need to be open and versatile in any circumstances. As we are living in a modernized and highly advanced generation, people have 24/7 access to different information, especially on government data. Ever since it started, the rise of a love-hate relationship between media and government started to spring. The romance between the two institutions starts to blur when the media has something to do that makes a bad image to the government, and the affair blooms when it is the opposite.
It is understandable to say that a love-hate relationship exists in both government and the media, as it is indisputably true that it is simple to identify concepts that cause them to love and hate each other. In a basic sense, the government has the ability to control any type of institution; they have the ability to manipulate information and alter data, or as the famous line goes, fake news. From that perspective, the relationship between the two parties begins to deteriorate because it is unethical and morally wrong, as well as contradicting the sole purpose of media, which is to ensure that credible, accurate, and fact-based information will only be implemented to the public. On the bright side at least, love is still present in both the media and the government, as they work together to provide real-time information, keeping us up to date on both international and local events, which plays a significant role in making us a part of the society as a whole.

“Media and Government: A Love-Hate Relationship”
Tumblr media
The Relationship between  government and media are unpredictable, the role of the media in relation with the politics is very practical and serious, these modern times, social media’s influence efficacy is at its highest peak, so influential that even in the darkest corners of the world are manipulated and been informed, government structure and governance are done with a very strategic way, every elections of candidacy, the most powerful and influential tool and weapon they used is the media, media can change the whole perspective of the people, including the ignorant, educated ones and the whole remaining population, the human race competition in politics and governance are been part of our life and society, the whole system won’t work, broken plans and economy is the result of the presence of a broken political governance, yet there is a irony at the back of the story line, media might be the worst enemy of the government also the media in their main weapon towards their aim and goal. The government cannot stop criticizing social media companies for failing to combat 'fake news' and abuse, and they play the fall guy to make politicians look strong. However, the sufficient competent using all media tools because it opens up communication possibilities that they could only have imagined previously. The government values the media for a lot of reasons, not the least of which is its ability to help them engage directly with constituents. Instead of focusing on local issues and facilitating dialogue, the parties can't help but consider all of the ways that social media can be used to inform people about their positions and to attack foes. Unfortunately, as the general election progresses, some of the techniques employed appear unethical – or at the very least, uncertain. Even before the election began. During elections, authorities become hypersensitive to social media, which explains the rather absurd steps taken to halt any news that is critical of the party in power. Without the presence of the social media, government propagandas, influence and dissemination of their presence won't exist, these today's generation and systematic way of living, the media has been the main ingredient of our life, every action we do, plans we think, and event we had, media has been our update to do in life, if these influence of the media is used by the government to achieve their main goal, a massive chances is waiting at the end of their tunnel.

"Media and Government: Love-Hate Relationship"
Tumblr media
In the world of media, some governments, well not all of them—some of them hate the media. They hate the media because of conveying misinformation to all of the individuals around the state. But at the same time, half of them love the media because it can increase popularity and might win if they enter elections. Governments have always had a love and hate relationship towards the media ever since it was made. The media manipulated their work or actions causing them to worry. It might sound hysterical, but I think that’s the commencement of the government's love and hate relationship towards the media. In addition, besides their detest towards the media, they also somehow love the idea gaining popularity in the media. They also love how influential media is, especially when it comes to the amount of likes, adoration, and fame. Numbers of governments are using any platforms of media to advertise themselves. So it’s not just full of hate and despise.
As days go by, the media is a wildly famous thing around the world. Therefore, governments somehow use the media as their way to promote themselves. Even though some of them hate the media, numerous of them love doing activities and showing it in any platforms of media. But, I guess the reason why they detest the media is because the media is one of the causes why some of their manifesto or program shuts down. The media is more powerful than the government thus it has a strength to take down things that we have no choice but to accept. Mostly when elections take place, many of the candidates in those elections will strive hard and win. And by striving hard, that means they need to convince people via media that they deserve to win. In my own kind of point of view, the media is one of the government's enemies when it comes to information because it can be true or misleading.
