Remembrance Sunday 2023

The Cenotaph or ‘empty tomb’ in Greek – has been the focus of the nation's remembrance for a century. The Cenotaph in Whitehall - London was replaced with the permanent Portland stone memorial and unveiled on Armistice Day, 11Th November 1920. The memorial became a central point for all those whose family and friends had died during the First World War with no known grave.

THEY SHALL GROW NOT OLD. AS WE THAT ARE LEFT GROW OLD:

AGE SHALL NOT WEARY THEM, NOR THE YEARS CONDEMN.

AT THE GOING DOWN OF THE SUN AND IN THE MORNING, WE WILL REMEMBER THEM.

The key event of Remembrance Sunday itself is floral wreaths at the foot of the Cenotaph in Whitehall to remember the fallen. A physical reminder of all those who have served and sacrificed, with British and Commonwealth soldiers, sailors, airmen and women represented, together with members of the emergency services and civilians, ensuring that no one is forgotten.
