Hmm! Well, let me see here...

1) life, and breath, and all things (Call the Midwife, Shelagh character study, rated G, published August 2017 but written in stages starting sometime in mid-2016). This is one of those stories that just clicked for me: the story I wanted to tell, the way I wanted to tell it, the importance it had for the character. This is Shelagh’s journey from childhood to just before marriage, and it is the best thing I’ve ever written.

2) All the Means to Make Us One (The Doctor Blake Mysteries, Lucien / Jean on their wedding night, rated E, published December 2017). So I spent most of last year working on writing smut -- on balancing the character’s emotions and physical actions and how things feel, and it wasn’t always fun work and the results were somewhat varied. But all that work came together here, and it’s just straight up delicious. In character and of a moment and really, really hot.

3) ebb on with them who homeward go (The Doctor Blake Mysteries, Jean Beazley character study following 5.07, Lucien / Jean, rated T, published June 2018). This is a story that is probably still too new for me to judge fairly. It is, I suspect, a bit hard to get into and keep hold of sometimes. Nothing much happens over 12,000 words. And yet...this is Jean’s story in all its messy, complicated glory, on a day where nothing happens but so decisions come into sharp relief. It is, six months after writing it, still my whole heart on the page.

4) When the Long Trick’s Over (Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, Jack Robinson character study, Jack / Phryne, rated T, published July 2015). In which Jack follows Phryne to England, has grown-up discussions with Mac and Dot and Rosie, thinks about what his decisions mean, and owns them. My most popular story by leaps and bounds -- it is about to cross 500 kudos and is one of the top 25 by kudos on AO3 in the entire fandom. o.O Because apparently we all love Jack Robinson a whole hell of a lot.

5) Authentication (Leverage, Sophie Devereaux character study, Nate / Sophie, rated T, published August 2010). In which Sophie thinks about everyone she has ever been...and makes up her mind to be Sophie. For Nate and the team, but mostly for herself. This one was fun, and became something of a template for how to do this thing I love.

In which I write character, character, character. I write characters making important choices, quietly and in ways that are right for them. The Lucien / Jean wedding night story departs from this somewhat--but I remain incredibly proud that that story is their story and could be no one else’s. Because for me it’s always about characters and always has been.

The Dodgers At A Glance- The Dodgers won on Opening Day then lost two straight games to the Rockies to start the 2022 campaign. They head to Minnesota for their first time since 2014 for a pair of games before opening at home on Thursday night. The Dodgers return a good chunk of their roster from the year before. They added Freddie Freeman to an already great lineup. Cody Bellinger seemed to change his batting stance daily in spring training. He had two hits on Sunday as he looks to regain his MVP form of a few years ago. Chris Taylor had a nice time in Denver, where he hit 4-for-7 over the weekend. Andrew Heaney, Tyler Anderson, and Craig Kimbrel join a loaded pitching staff for Los Angeles. Craig Kimbrel takes over the closer role for Kenley Jansen, who signed with the Braves. The Dodgers initial plan was to have a closer by committee, but now the roles seem to be more established. Kimbrel will get the ninth with Blake Treinen getting the eighth. Daniel Hudson and Brusdar Graterol should get late inning roles as well. Victor Gonzalez, Caleb Ferguson, and Tommy Kahnle figure to get involved in leverage spots when they get healthy. 

The Twins At A Glance- The Twins had an up-and-down first series against the Mariners over the weekend. They lost the first two games by a combined score of 6-4. The bats broke out on Sunday for a 10-4 win and pitching dominated in a 4-0 win last night to split the four-game series. Byron Buxton has three homers through four games and is hitting .333 on the year. The Twins offense hit nine homers this weekend and they look to return to the Bomba Squad days. Luis Arraez is 5-for-9 and is getting playing time over Gio Urshela at third base. I wonder if he will get more chances in left field now that Alex Kirilloff is off to a bad start. Miguel Sano is 0-for-13 with six strikeouts and is a traditionally slow starter. The pitching staff for the Twins owns a 2.50 ERA through four games. The bullpen has allowed just two runs in 17 1/3 innings pitched. Jhoan Duran got the ninth inning on Monday night and it might be a sign of things to come. Tyler Duffey has saved just four games in thirteen opportunities in his career. Emilio Pagan has twenty-two saves in his career. There really isn’t another reliever with as many saves as Pagan, but Duran could be slowly moved into the closer role. 

What To Watch For- The Dodgers are (13-9) all-time against the Twins. Los Angeles swept Minnesota in the last series in late-July of 2017. The last time the Dodgers were at Target Field was in 2014 when they swept the Twins in a three-game series. The 2014 series was memorable for a few different reasons as Sunday’s Tigers-Twins game got rained out. The first game of the series was rained out on Tuesday. Zack Greinke outpitched Kyle Gibson to win the first game on Wednesday then the Dodgers took the first game of a doubleheader the next day. A Drew Butera homer in the twelfth against Brian Duensing helped the Dodgers sweep in a five-hour game at Target Field. I’ve been to five of the twenty-two all-time meetings between the two teams. Andrew Heaney has a 2.70 ERA in four games all-time against the Twins. Chris Archer is (0-3) with a 6.19 ERA in three starts versus the Dodgers. Mookie Betts has four career homers off Archer. Chris Paddack is (1-3) with a 7.03 ERA in six starts against the Dodgers. Cody Bellinger is 1-for-12 all-time against Paddack. Clayton Kershaw has never faced the Twins, but has pitched at Target Field. He pitched the second inning of the 2014 MLB All-Star Game at Target Field. He should have started that game, but Adam Wainwright grooved a pitch or two to Derek Jeter is his final All-Star Game. This will be a fun series for me with my two favorite teams playing. They would have played four games in 2020, but the pandemic cancelled the initial schedule. The rain might be a factor for Tuesday’s game and we might play two on Wednesday.

random, kinda ridiculous spec for episodes 5.07 and 5.08

Ok, I have this random spec in my mind and I just have to get it out there.  I don’t think this is where the show is going, and honestly, I’m not a big fan of it going there buuuut….there’s a piece of it that rings true. Also, there’s a good amount of Echo talk and reference to Becho, so if you’re allergic to even seeing it mentioned in text, then that’s cool, but move on. 

In the next episode, we know Echo is going to be tested when her mission conflicts with Raven. I think we’re going to see Echo very conflicted on what to do, and honestly, I think we might actually see her go against Raven to complete her mission. She’s trying to prevent war, she’s trying to protect Bellamy and the rest of Spacekru at the bunker. If she does it, it isn’t because she’s evil. It’s her doing what she thinks she needs to protect as many of the people she loves as possible. (This is kind of irrelevant to my spec, but I want it noted that I am vilifying Echo and the position she may be put in). That being said, in the end Echo is going to choose her friendship with Raven, her loyalty to Spacekru, over her mission for Octavia. She’s more than just a tool, a spy, a weapon of death and war, she’s found family, and more importantly, she’s found a deeper purpose within herself. So, either she doesn’t fulfill her first mission step or she does something later to make it up to Raven that ultimately places her (Echo) against Octavia, causing O to re-ignite the banishment/death order.

Now, I  think there is a strong possibility that Octavia sent along a second spy to Eden, unbeknown to Bellamy, Clarke, or Spacekru. She doesn’t trust Echo, and from a strategic pov, it would absolutely make sense to send a contingency plan in case Echo fails.

I also think there is going to be a time jump somewhere in the next couple of episodes (basing this on the bts pic of Echo, Memori, and Raven laying in snow, and a Tasya interview where she mentions sitting in snow, considering her life choices). So there is also the possibility if Echo decides to not deactivate the Eye or something, that in enough time, O just assumes she has failed.

Meanwhile in the bunker: I think there will be, at some point, Octavia confronting Bellamy, telling him that clearly Echo hasn’t changed much since she’s betrayed her again, or something like that, making it clear that if Echo and Wonkru cross paths again, Octavia will not be as compromising regarding Echo’s life.

Bellamy, being Bellamy whom loves so deeply and so truly but is trying to be a man of consideration and peace, will barter for Echo’s safety, finally making it clear he is going to leave Polis to go to Echo.

Octavia doesn’t want this. As much as Blodreina views Bellamy as a threat to her command, Octavia still loves and cares about him. She doesn’t want him walking into, what she likely views as certain death. She wants him safe, near her, but she also wants him under her thumb. So, I think she might try a different tactic.

And this is where this spec really goes off the rails into wackiness. I think Octavia knows about Clarke’s phone calls. I think she knows Clarke is in love with Bellamy. I think *that* is the secret she (threatened) promised to keep secret at the end of 5.06. I think when Madi came to offer herself for training, Octavia likely asked her about the stories Clarke told her about the 101. Madi, excited to be talking to her hero would have told her O was her favorite, but Bellamy was Clarke’s favorite. Octavia would be interested in knowing more, so she pushed with an “Oh?” and Madi, being 12, would just spill the beans on the stories and the drawings and the phone calls. This gives Octavia an extra layer of leverage over both Clarke and her brother.

Octavia isn’t stupid. Everyone knew Bellamy was in love Clarke, except Clarke herself. If Bellamy is threatening to leave, maybe she could give him a reason to stay willingly. She tells him everything, but before we get any reaction beyond a pure moment of shock (big wet brown eyes, face frozen, a little “wha-?” escaping his lips), someone rushes into the room to tell them they’ve caught another defector, Clarke has been caught trying to sneak Madi out.

Octavia, so done with this shit, immediately orders her to fight in the pit.

Bellamy reacts how one would expect him to react. There will be yelling, crying, begging.  O reminds him that you are Wonkru or you are the enemy of Wonkru. She then throws  out an impossible choice to him, one life or the other (with an emphatic "Choooose” moment). All he has to do is make a choice. One lives, one dies.

Now, as ridiculous as this seems, it feels inline with Octavia adopting the “Love is Weakness” motto. His love for others is a weakness, Clarke’s love for Madi and secret love for him have given her exactly the leverage she needs over these threats.

Bellamy would never choose. The Bellamy we know and love would rather die than sentence someone he loved to death. Obviously, Octavia would never honor that. He knows he could go fight in that pit and die for Clarke, but O would just kill her anyway. So, instead, he makes a different choice— He chooses to become part of Wonkru. She lets both of them live and he will follow her.

This works for O, it keeps her brother by her side and under her thumb, and it gets Clarke, another threat, out of Eden. It works for Bellamy’s goal because it keeps both women safe and away from Octavia and he knows that she won’t kill them because she now has leverage over him.

The episode ends with Bellamy being inducted? perhaps being fed a ceremonial cannibal cookie by Gaia?

Or it ends with Clarke arriving in Eden and seeing Echo across the field. It’s time to save damsel in distress Bellamy.

Again, I know that this is all very unlikely, and I really, really don’t like the idea of the show directly positioning Echo and Clarke against each other, BUT, just because I don’t like it, doesn’t mean it’s not the exact type of thing Octavia would do. It would also parallel the way that Diyoza is using relationships and connections as pressure points in her camp too.

Amazon reports $63.4 billion in Q2 2019 revenue: AWS up 37%, subscriptions up 37%, and ‘other’ up 37%

Amazon today reported earnings for its second fiscal quarter of 2019, including revenue of $63.4 billion, net income of $2.6 billion, and earnings per share of $5.22 (compared to revenue of $52.9 billion, net income of $2.5 billion, and earnings per share of $5.07 in Q2 2018). North American sales were up 20% to $38.7 billion, while international sales grew 12% to $14.9 billion.

Analysts had expected Amazon to earn $62.48 billion in revenue and report earnings per share of $5.57. The retail giant thus only slightly beat on revenue but fell short on earnings per share. The company’s stock was down about 1% in regular trading, and down 2% in after-hours trading. Amazon gave third quarter revenue guidance in the range of $66.0 billion and $70.0 billion, compared to a consensus of $67.27 billion from analysts.

AWS, subscriptions, and ‘other’

Amazon Web Services (AWS) continued to be the star of the show, growing 37% in sales to $8.4 billion. That growth figure is the first sub-40% growth rate since Amazon started breaking out AWS numbers. Nonetheless, AWS still accounted for about 13% of Amazon’s total revenue for the quarter. AWS is the cloud computing market leader, ahead of Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud.

Subscription services were up 37% to $4.7 billion. That would mainly constitute Amazon Prime, which the company is expanding to offer deals at places like Whole Foods.

Amazon’s “other” category, which mostly covers the company’s advertising business, was coincidentally also up 37% to $3 billion in revenue. The company knows plenty about what its customers want to buy, or even don’t want to buy, and it’s increasingly leveraging that for its advertising business.

Prime Day, re:MARS, and the Echo Show 5

“Customers are responding to Prime’s move to one-day delivery — we’ve received a lot of positive feedback and seen accelerating sales growth,” Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos said in a statement. “Free one-day delivery is now available to Prime members on more than 10 million items, and we’re just getting started. A big thank you to the team for continuing to make life easier for customers.”

Bezos unsurprisingly wanted to focus on Prime Day, which has been a massive success for the company. Prime Day, which actually falls in Amazon’s third quarter, was once again the largest shopping event in Amazon history, and this year sales from the two-day event (July 15 and July 16) surpassed the previous Black Friday and Cyber Monday combined. The two days were also the biggest ever for member signups.

Arguably more important was Amazon’s re:MARS event, its AI conference held from June 4 to June 7. The event featured everything from Robert Downey Jr. to telerobotic hands.

In its earnings release, Amazon talked up the launch of its Echo Show 5 (our review). The company also highlighted other devices that launched this past quarter, including the Kindle Oasis, Fire 7, and Fire 7 Kids Edition. And of course, Alexa was mentioned many times, though Amazon is nowhere near ready to break out the voice assistant in its earnings reports.
