Can merpeople get around on land? Since they have leg bones in their tail can they sort of "stand" up on their tails?

Hi! Unfortunately, it's extremely difficult for them to move around on land. seal-kin merms probably have the most locomotive ability, but the shortened femurs that merfolk have isn't actually enough to provide enough support and leverage to move around. The closest they can get to "standing" on their tails would be something similar to kneeling and scooting around on their "knees." Which wouldn't be very comfortable because their shortened femurs aren't really designed for that. It's more effective for them to drag themselves forward with their arms when they're out of the water, it being both faster and more comfortable.

Of course me making that last merm skeleton for shark merms was the prelude to me making the reference sheets for Niko.

On the topic of being on land, how long can the mers survive outside of the water? Do they willingly go onto land?

Without any access to water a merperson can survive for about 36 hours on land, a day and a half. They are more prone to dehydration than a human, but less susceptible than a marine mammal.

Merfolk can often visit the surface or the shallows for various practical things that require access to air to do, such as metalsmithing. However, they typically don't have a lot of incentive to drag themselves out of the water.

there's something kinda spooky about finalizing a character's appearance, even after you've spent years doodling them and testing out different sketches for how they could look.

But, I'm proud of how she eventually turned out! excited to draw her more in the future

merm skeleton! :D This is just a basic diagram for a pinniped-type merm, specifically a seal kin merm(a merm who was sea-lion kin would have a slightly different skeleton). In addition, I saw this as a chance to diagram how merm ears work, as well as merm lungs. uwu In the future I also hope to make diagrams for cetecean-type merms and elasmobranchii-type merms

first two were made a while ago, the third is much more recent, where i tweaked meno’s eye and hair color a little and did more serious outfit exploration. also tweaked the shape of her bangs just a tad~

been a hot minute since i posted my merms, but i got dat new fit for meno because i’m physically incapable of doing anything other than designing outfits and playing dress-up with my characters.
