Sentence starter - "I'm really not sure what you thought this would achieve..."
1.3k | T
“I’m not really sure what you thought this would achieve…” Eddie mumbles, mostly to himself, as he watches Buck unpack countless bags and boxes of pure sugar out of the reusable grocery store bag. Buck pauses, one of his arms fully immersed down in the bag, the other one holding onto a bag of caramel popcorn, as well as a smaller bag of fruit gummies. He looks up at Eddie, raising an eyebrow - as if he’s the stupid one.
“Dopamine, Eddie,” he says, shrugging a he goes back to digging through the bag - which finally seems to be empty - the kitchen island littered with any and all kinds of treats, snacks, and candy.
Eddie should be upset - he really should be. If Christopher eats all of this, he’s not only going to experience a huge sugar high, followed by a huge crash - but he’s also likely going to vomit. That being said, though, there’s no way Eddie is letting him eat all of it tonight - he can pick two or three, they’ll save the rest - so maybe it’s okay.
It’s also kind of adorable that Buck is this nervous about this. Eddie honestly hadn’t expected him to be nervous at all - there’s no reason for him to be. But the flushed face, the way his hair is messy from all the different ways he’s been tugging at it in frustration - it’s cute. Adorable. God, he loves him.
“Babe…” Eddie sighs, making his way around the island. The word is still slightly foreign on his tongue, but the way that Buck’s face twitches and softens when he says it - it’s worth it. More than worth it. Combined with the weight of Eddie’s hands on his shoulders when he gets close enough, Eddie thinks he finally might be letting go of some of the tension that has been following him around all day. “You don’t need to get our son high on sugar. He’s not gonna be upset. He’s gonna be happy.”
“When you told him you were dating Ana-“
“Ana,” Eddie immediately interrupts, shaking his head, letting his eyes slip closed as he digs the pads of his fingertips deeper into the muscle of Buck’s back, giving him a little bit of a massage. “Ana was wrong,” Eddie continues, finally, letting his forehead fall to Buck’s. “She didn’t fit with me. With us. And you…” Eddie trails off, lifting his head again, their foreheads parting as they both open their eyes; he feels Buck’s large hand rest on the side of his waist, grounding him.
Eddie means to continue, but he truthfully doesn’t know what to say. How does he even begin to explain how Buck and Ana are different, not just as people, but in their roles, and who they are, and - god, he can’t even find a single thing that is remotely similar at all, so where is he supposed to start laying out the differences?
“You’re Buck,” he settles on, through a faint sigh. “His Buck,” he continues. “Our Buck.”
“I know,” Buck nods - because he’s not a complete idiot, he knows he’s not anything like Ana. He’s just nervous - Eddie knows this. So he nods once as well, and then he slips his hands down to his biceps, slowly backing him up against the kitchen island.
“Come here,” Eddie says, letting his hands slip down to his thighs - thankfully, Buck gets the idea, and curls his hands around the edge of the countertop, helping Eddie with the task of lifting him up onto it. As soon as he’s steady, Eddie steps in between his legs, and he feels Buck’s arms wrap around his neck, keeping him close. “I know you’re afraid of losing us,” Eddie says, making sure that Buck’s eyes are on his the entire time - making sure that he’s not just hearing him, but that he’s listening. “And I need you to hear me when I’m telling you that that’s never going to happen. I love you. Christopher loves you. Our family is not complete without you, not anymore. It’s been that way for a long time - longer than you or I have been willing to admit, right?” Buck nods once, his body once again relaxing. “So you sleeping in my bed, or kissing me goodbye, he’s not gonna care about that.”
“And if he does?”
“If he does, then we will talk to him, and figure out why it bothers him,” Eddie says. “But I’m not gonna throw you out just because he has a bad first reaction - which he won’t, by the way,” Eddie continues. “Okay?”
“Okay,” Buck nods. “Okay,” he repeats, and when the smile on his face starts to grow, Eddie can’t help but match it, as they go in for a kiss.
It’s been nearly a month and a half, and Eddie would have thought that he would get used to this - the way the smooth slide of Buck’s lips over his own make his head spin, the buzzing in the pit of his stomach, the slight scratch of Buck’s stubble against his own, the intoxicating weight of Buck’s hands on his shoulders, in his hair, on his -
“Are you dating?”
Immediately, Eddie thinks he hears the record scratch of the moment, as he immediately pulls away - takes a step and a half away, Buck’s arms falling off of him as they both turn to look at Christopher - Carla standing a couple of feet behind him, barely keeping her face in check.
“Uh…” Buck starts, immediately turning to look at Eddie - usually, Buck is the one who is good at this kind of stuff, saving an awkward moment, but it seems like he’s passing this one to Eddie. Understandably so.
“I, uh - “ Granted, Eddie clearly isn’t all that eloquent himself at the moment. “Would uh - would you be okay with that, Chris?” He finally manages. “Buck being my boyfriend?” (Eddie’s not sure that he likes the term boyfriend, but considering the fact that they have been partners at work for so many years, they need a way to differentiate. Besides, Eddie plans on having him upgraded to fiancé within a handful of months, anyway. Hopefully.)
“Obviously,” Christopher says, with his signature eyeroll - as if the mere suggestion that he might not be okay with it is just absolutely ridiculous. Eddie meets Buck’s eyes over his eyes, and raises his eyebrows as if to say ‘I told you so.’ In response, Buck nods once. ‘Yeah, you told me so.’
“I’m just gonna leave you all to yourselves,” Carla finally says, and leaves all three of them with a hug. “I’m proud of you,” she whispers into Eddie’s ear, and Eddie nods, struggling against the way his eyes want to water at the words.
The front door opens, and shuts, and then they’re left alone. Buck opens his mouth to say something - probably to ask Christopher what he wants to eat, because that’s - stupidly - the one thing they haven’t bought.
“Is that cotton candy?” Christopher asks, though, before anyone else can get a word in.
“Uh… yeah,” Buck says, shooting Eddie an apologetic look - of course they had been planning on putting everything away before Chris came home so that he wouldn’t walk into this sugary paradise - alas, they were too slow. So now he’s standing here, looking over everything. “Hey, how about you uh… pick three things out to have tonight? We’ll save the rest?” Buck asks.
Christopher agrees, and they start up a different conversation, but all Eddie can do is stare at him, and wonder how the fuck he managed to find someone who just always seems to read his mind.
God, he can’t wait to spend the rest of his life with this man.
send me a sentence starter and i (might) write you a fic 💕

I’m actually impressed with my own mixture here. I’ve got songs from 4 different soundtracks, a song I only have because it is part on an entire album I own, the eldest son of my favourite singer, and yeah...the rest. Challenge to my followers: Which song is the one I only have because it is part of a full album?
Oh, let’s see...who’s music collection do I want to dip into? I’d love it if the following participated, but of course, this is just a silly internet thing, so please, feel no obligation: @littleotter73 @librarianonparade @tastymoves @lokimercer @asynca @waitforgravity @girlfmkitty ...That’s 7, my favourite number...that’ll have to do on the tagging. If anyone else feels like doing this, the more the merrier. Tag me again so I make sure to see the answers though!
