what are your thoughts on the casting of MCU wonder man?👁👁

i haven't watched anything with yahya abdul mateen yet (although i will now that we seem to have confirmation), so as far as if he'll be a good fit i don't know for sure, but im mostly okay with it! he seems a talented actor, i mean he's won emmys, so from that state of things im cool with it.

ill be honest though, i would have more than likely chosen him to play vision; vision is a character who, while it hasn't always been sensitively depicted, has had a history of very overt racial coding. You know, there's a reason why Viv or even Jocasta have been depicted as women of colour when they take human forms recently; that's sort of baked into the way marvel depicts their robot characters, n that started with Vision. ill tag @marvisions if she wants to give more a discussion on this 😊

by comparison, simon is a wealthy socialite who when he initially comes back to life is shown as being out of touch with the current era, and especially is depicted as intimidated by carol's second wave feminism style. he even talks down to jennifer & tigra in a WCA issue. that said , these aspects of his character haven't really been part of him in the past 20 years, so it's not something id be expecting the show to include, but like i said i personally think vision would have made more sense as it's more a part of their history and a part in dire need of updating?

and im kinda expecting that this isn't really going to incite all that many new readers into simons history, because i mean, why would you bother wanting to read 60+ years of Some White Guy if the version you're interested is the TV one, which i could understand lol, but hey, maybe there will be some reprints and ill be making reading lists around the time the show debuts just in case, but im not expecting a sudden influx of comic readers, rather, a new canon from the show where ill explain where the inspiration for certain parts come from.

so yeah, all in all i have much more positive feelings than negative, just mostly surprised they decided to cast a man of colour for simon but not mad about it! nervous about the inevitable influx of people who have never looked at simon once arguing that they somehow ruined this character they never have the time of day before, but we'll handle that when it happens. i will be disappointed but not surprised if simons Jewish implications & queercoding don't make it to cut, but that's just the unfortunate reality of a character joining the MCU , but hopefully I can discuss this with new fans !!

so uh, yeah! pleased, im very glad we have a talented actor, i will look forward to watching more of his stuff to see, i hope he has fun depicting simon & i hope for the best with the shows content while expecting parts to fall through but yeah that's just the MCU. dealing with mcu wanda fans who want him to date her IS going to be a nightmare but with enough gaslighting that he's already canonically gay maybe i can stop this. we'll see lol
