Analysis
           The game between Monica Puig of Puerto Rico and Angelique Kerber of Germany in Rio Olympics 2016 Women’s Tennis Final is truly a part of the history of the sport. It is because it is the first win of Puerto Rico in a major tournament of the sport people that are watching the event is very proud and some of it are crying and they will not forget that moment. Monica was not supposed to be in this match but, against all odds she got there and won Olympic immortality. In the power ranking no, one believes on Monica that she can bring the gold medal to her country so all of the fans are pretty shock of what they witness. But, at the Monica prove to everybody that she is a different fighter and has a good spirit to fight even though no one believes in him.
 Court Dimension
 The court is 23.77m long and for singles matches, 8.23m wide. For doubles matches the court is 10.97m wide. The court is divided into two equal areas by a net suspended by a cord or metal cable attached to two net posts. The net is 1.07m high and is fully extended to that it fills the space between the two nets posts. The net is 0.914m high at the center, where is held down tightly by a white strap. A white band covers the cord or metal cable and the top of the net. For doubles matches the center of the net posts are 0.914m outside the doubles court on each side. For singles matches the centers of the net posts are 0.914m outside the singles court on each side.
 Equipment
 Rackets- can be made of many alloys or wood. There are no restrictions on the size or materials used in making a racket. It has an oval head and a gradually widening throat that connects the narrow handle with the head of the racket. 
Ball- as per ITF rules, Tennis balls are yellow colored spherical balls, with a diameter between 2.5 and 2.625 inches. They weigh between 2 and 21/16 oz. Pressurized rubber is used to make semi spherical half shells. They are then joined with compressed air between them.
Net- a rectangular net is used to separate the two sides of a Tennis court. The net should cover the space between the two net posts. The net is woven in such a way that it does not allow the Tennis ball to pass through. It is usually tied in about 3 feet above the ground at the centre.
Wrist bands- are worn around wrists to prevent sweat from wetting the players’ palm or the racket. A wet grip might not be strong.
Headbands- are used to absorb sweat. They also tie player’s hair away from their face. Any tight cap made of absorbent material can also be used instead of a head band.
Tennis Shoe- just running shoes don’t provide enough lateral support to players. Tennis shoes are designed to give players better stability and prevent them from sliding while moving sideways. Shoes shouldn’t damage the court when players move briskly across the court.
 Basic Skills
 Footwork
Although you’re not traveling a far distance to the naked eye, tennis players actually rack up miles of walking and running throughout the course of a match. Endurance is key, but so is your footwork because there are tons of quick movements that you need to make in a short period of time and over a short distance. With that in mind, it’s important to know the basic idea behind certain footwork techniques that’ll help you be as economical as possible with your movements.
Serving
This is a crucial part of the game because if you’re not able to effectively serve a tennis ball, it’ll be hard to take control of any game or match you’re participating in. The actual act of serving a ball takes but a few seconds. However, there are tons of small movements within the act itself that make up a successful experience with honing this skill. These small movements include mastering the ball toss, gaining a consistent point of contact, and properly timing each of your movements. Get these basics down first before you move on and start to improve your serve in other ways.
Forehand and Backhand Strokes
There are a number of different strokes used during a tennis match, but forehand and backhand strokes are easily the most common. Learning how your body responds to the backswing, the point of contact, and the follow-through of each stroke is crucial before going on and learning anything else. What’s great is that if you don’t have a partner to practice with, all you need is a racquet, some tennis balls, and a wall to commit these movements to muscle memory. Even after you feel comfortable with the movements, it’s important to keep some kind of forehand and backhand drills as a regular part of your practice routine.

 Rules of the Game
§  A ball must land within bounds for play to continue; if a player hits the ball outside of bounds, this results in the loss of the point for them.
§  Players/teams cannot touch the net or posts or cross onto the opponent’s side.
§  Players/teams cannot carry the ball or catch it with the racquet.
§  Players cannot hit the ball twice.
§  Players must wait until the ball passes the net before they can return it.
§  A player that does not return a live ball before it bounces twice loses the point.
§  If the ball hits or touches the players, that counts as a penalty.
§  If the racquet leaves the hand or verbal abuse occurs, a penalty is given.
§  Any ball that bounces on the lines of boundary are considered good.
§  A serve must bounce first before the receiving player can return it.
 How to officiate the sport            
Chair Umpire- to ensure the rules of a tennis match are upheld correctly, a chair umpire is appointed in competitive matches to maintain the spirit of fair play. This umpire sits in an elevated chair by the net and announces the score. Like most sports, the chair umpire has the final word on all issues that happen during play.
Line Umpire- work on court as part of a team of between one and nine line umpires. The line umpire calls all shots relating to their assigned line. Each line umpire is assigned to one line or a position in a system if the crew is short-handed. For example, a line umpire on the receiver's side may have to cover the centre service line, and then move to one of the sidelines after the serve. Line umpires are a requirement for professional tennis games.

The Fates
Just a drabble about what happens after S8.
Queen of Ashes or the Mad Queen were some of the more innocuous names they gave her.  Daenerys who so loved having her meaningless and ultimately false titles listed upon introductions was given much less kinder names by the people of Westeros.  Queen of Murderers. Slaughterer of Innocents. The Burner of Children.  It was not unforeseen that the people, particularly the small folk, would not have kind memories of the woman who had burnt down a city and murdered thousands.
And her former allies did not escape the consequences.  It was foolish of the Unsullied to think that there would be no consequences to the murderous rampage they took part of five years ago.  They had been the first to fall.  Afterall, the relatives of the ones they had just freshly slaughtered were the same people they expected and relied on to fill their boats for their long voyage with supplies.  All it took was a smear of blood here, a trace of excrement there in the foodstuff and the heralded Unsullied warriors found themselves on their knees, dying by the dozen out in the middle of the sea until their boats became ghost ships, floating unmanned until they were taken by storms or rocks and sank to the bottom of the ocean.
The Dorothki did not fare much better.  In some ways, the few that remained in Westeros, were easy to take care of as there was not much anyone needed to do.  Unused to the climate and illnesses in this country, they quickly sickened and died and in a few moons after they had set sail, only a few were left and little cause for concern.
Out of Daenerys former allies, it was one who’s association with one of her allies that fell first.  Many had questioned King Bran the Broken’s choices for his small council. What was the reasoning to appoint a former sellsword like Bronn as Master of Coin?  It wasn’t Bran’s choice, but his Hand’s selection, fulfilling an obligation and hoping to secure one ally in a city that hated him.  However, the prominence of Bronn’s role likely marked him early for reprisal. Many viewed the Lannister, particularly Tyrion Lannister who helped bring the Queen of Ashes to their shore, with undisguised hatred.  Friends of his weren’t viewed with kind eyes.  But unlike Tyrion who knew he was hated and kept close to the Red Keep over concerns of his safety, Bronn thought he was not in jeopardy.  He was wrong and the knife in his gut after visiting one of the makeshift brothels set up made the last Lannister even more paranoid of his own safety.
A representative of Dorne became the next Master of Coin.  People had not forgotten Dorne was once an ally of Daenerys Targaryen as well, but the new prince had wisely distanced himself from that association, noting it was Ellaria Sand who had made the alliance, and became a stalwart supporter of the new monarch.  The new Master of Coin proved to be a wise and judicious official and the Six Kingdoms benefited greatly from his appointment.
Yara Greyjoy, blindly and foolishly still loyal for whatever reason to Daenerys’ memory attempted to attack the North in reprisal for Jon Snow’s actions.  They were easily repelled by the Northern ships, one in particular with a direwolf as its figurehead.  That ship had rammed Yara’s own and her men were quickly overwhelmed.  Yara herself was killed in that fight, by a small, quick figure.  Her death created a momentary power vacuum in the Iron Islands, but a cousin eventually won out. This cousin was more savvy and less blinded and worked with both King Bran and Queen Sansa and soon found a way to make the Iron Islands prosperous without attacking and pillaging: they simply were some of the best sailors. As trade with other countries opened up the Ironborn found their services for shipping in great demand and as for potential pirates, they learned to steer clear of ships with Kraken sigil.
After two years on Bran’s council, Davos found himself back in the North.  It was more for his safety and sanity than anything.  While he managed to get the fleet back into shape, he found himself, while not hated as much as Tyrion, still tainted by his association with the Dragon Queen.  He was among those who participated in the destruction of Kings Landing.  His actions to try to help people was disregarded or scoffed at by most.  Afterall, small actions of one pale in comparison to the enormous horror inflicted on the people.  He found he could not traverse freely in the streets and always had to travel with armed guards. An attempt on his life, a knife attack that left him with a wound to his shoulder and weeks of recovery, convinced him he should resign his post and perhaps partake himself to more friendly territory.
Bran accepted his resignation gracefully and sent Davos to be with Sansa who allowed him to assist her own Master of Ships.  While the Northerners regarded him suspiciously, not forgetting how he had helped bring the Dragon Queen to their land and offering praise of her “kindness” in the beginning, they at least did not try to assassinate him.  So Davos fell into comfortable existence, if a much less grand one.
And what of Tyrion Lannister? The former Hand of the Burner of Children?  Many were appalled by King Bran’s choice of Hand, but as the young Stark said, he would be spending his time making up for all of the destruction caused not only by his assistance to Daenerys, but the reign of the Lannisters as well.  Tyrion found himself working long and hard hours, trying to rebuild the city and meet the needs of the people.  There was nothing else he could do.  If he showed his face outside of the Red Keep he would undoubtedly meet the same fate as Bronn, if not worse. He dared not even bring any women in to entertain him, uncertain if they would try to kill him.  He grew suspect of his wine, wondering if it was poisoned.  When he complained about his fears to King Bran, the young monarch had simply replied,
“Then you much do more to show that you are trying to set right all the wrong you had done in the past.”
“I wonder if you want to get me killed,” was Tyrion’s bitter reply.
“All of our fates have been set.  We can only let them play out.”
“And is my fate to be murdered in my bed or at a council meeting?” Tyrion sneered.
“For now, your fate is to figure out the sewage system for Flea Bottom.”
On this went for five years as Tyrion grew increasingly paranoid, but the country began to recover. But did he get the credit for this? No, he grew even more bitter as the people began to hail King Bran for his clever ideas and helping and relieving the suffering of the people. And then, just before the fifth anniversary of the burning of Kings Landing that Tyrion made his last and most fatal mistake. As preparations were being made to recognize the tragedy, Tyrion, in a drunken stupor decided to visit some of the memorials that had been erected over the years to the ones killed.  He was found the next morning, beside one such statute, the one of a mother trying to shelter her child.  His face and body was twisted into awful contortions as some great pain had wracked through him before he drew his last breath.  However, no maester could find a cause and thus no search was made for his killer.  If there ever was one.
And what of Jon Snow who was exiled to the Wall?  He was not welcomed in the South.  While recognizing he had ended the reign of terror of the Dragon Queen, like Davos, he had participated in its destruction by nature of commanding some of her troops. It was also not lost of them that he had been her lover and loudly and frequently proclaimed her his queen.  No, they did not want him in the South, but they did not much care about his fate either.  As long as he never left the North nor held any position of power, they were happy to forget about Jon Snow.
And thus, King Bran was able to quietly pardon Jon five years after the destruction of King’s Landing. The memories had not faded and it would be generations before the horrors would become a distant memory, but as long as Jon stayed out of the Six Kingdoms, the South would not care.  They would give him that peace in exchange for ending the Burner of Children.
So with this pardon in hand and the one Queen Sansa had given him months after his banishment, Jon Snow made his way out of from the far North towards Winterfell.  When he arrived, he knelt before Queen Sansa, the Queen Who Never Bent, offering her his sword and allegiance which she accepted and he was made head of her Queensguard.  The North too regarded him with some suspicion.  They had not forgotten he was the King Who Bent the Knee and brought a murderous tyrant into their homeland, but they also, quietly and shamefacedly recalled that some of their own Northernmen, some of their kin, were among the murdering savages that dark day in Kings Landing, or were reminded of that, and quickly kept their comments to themselves.
That first year was not easy on Jon as he re-adapted to life in Winterfell, but the routine helped. It wasn’t until he was there almost a year that he was finally welcomed back as a Northern son.  The Queen had been out visiting some of the farms who had adapted some new techniques to help with increased crops.  As always, she was accompanied by her Queensguard when they were suddenly attacked by a band of brigands made up by outlaws and even three Dorothki.  The Queensguard were outnumbered, and one attacker got close enough to the queen to pull her from her horse.  Instead of dragging her onto his own horse, the queen had fallen to the ground and it appeared as if a horse had trampled her.  As some who were there will tell the story later, this sent Jon Snow into a frenzy. He alone began to cut down attacker after attacker, trying to get to the queen who laid still on the ground. As the bodies of the brigands laid strewn and covered in blood, he had dropped to his knees beside the queen and uttered in a voice that was the epitome of anguish,
“Sansa…”
She was unconscious and her party rode quickly back to Winterfell, Jon Snow cradling her in his arms. He haunted the hallway outside her door as the maester saw to her injuries, the blood of the men who attacked them drying on his hands and clothes.  Soon the door opened and the maester came out to give Jon and members of her council assembled news of her condition.
“Just a little bump on her head and sprained wrist,” the maester had said cheerfully.  “She should rest today and tomorrow, maybe even the next day.  She’ll definitely not be doing any writing for at least two weeks as she rests that wrist.” He gave them all a nod and waddled off.
Her council members had sighed in relief and left Jon standing in the hallway staring the Sansa’s chamber door.  Later, her handmaiden would say that she came out to ask Ser Jon to go in and see the queen as she had asked for him.  No one knew exactly what transpired between them but they noticed a shift in their relationship. A growing closeness and an even more protective fierceness within Jon. Soon There were whispers about the Queen and the captain of her Queensguard, but the Northerners had no issue. Had he not shown his loyalty to their queen?  Issues any Northerners had with Jon began to fade.
So it was no surprise a year later when Bran received a raven inviting him to the wedding of Queen Sansa and Jon Snow.  He would be her consort and take the name of “Stark.”  He would hold no titles or position.  He would simply be her husband, the father of her children and the man who would protect her with every ounce of his being.
Bran laid down the scroll with the invitation on it and looked up as Samwell Tarly regarded him closely.
“Did you know it would play out this way?” Sam asked curiously.  “That things would right themselves in a few years?”
Bran gave him for what passed as a smile for him and repeated the words he had said to Tyrion a few years ago, “All of our fates have been set.  We can only let them play out.”

This Is You on Stress
Stress is a normal mind–body response that all of us experience to some degree. Physiologist Hans Selye first used "stress" in this sense in 1936, defining it as the “non-specific response of the body to any demand made upon it.” (2)
When you’re stressed, you go into what’s known as “fight-or-flight” mode: your body releases a surge of stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol, which snaps you into high-alert mode. Your blood pressure and heart rate go up, your muscles tighten, you breathe faster, and your senses sharpen.
There are real evolutionary advantages to this. After all, how do you think our Paleolithic ancestors survived being chased by predators? These physical changes in your body speed your reaction time and enhance your focus and allow you to act quickly and decisively. This rush of stress hormones appears to temporarily strengthen brain neuron connections, which, in turn, may improve your memory and concentration over the short term.
Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley found that rats exposed to acute but short-lived stress doubled the production of new brain cells in their hippocampus (the memory center of the brain), compared to brain cell production under normal conditions. (3) This type of short-term stress may actually help to temporarily boost immunity by increasing levels of white blood cells like neutrophils and lymphocytes. (4)
Managing Bad Stress
The key to managing your stress is the ability to turn it on and off like a faucet. Left on too long, it can cause major damage to your mind and body. In our 21st-century world, stress doesn’t usually come in the form of occasionally fighting against life-threatening wild beasties as we hunt and gather our food. Instead, it manifests on a daily basis through routine stressors—a traffic-filled morning commute … a difficult boss … deadlines and demands … unresolved relationship issues … family obligations … and a cellphone chirping at you at all hours of the day.
Your body responds to this chronic stress by activating the hypothalamus, triggering your adrenal glands to release cortisol. When you’re constantly stressed, your cortisol levels are running high all the time. That’s why you—and your body—are headed for health trouble if you don’t get chronic stress under control.
A 2018 study published in the journal Circulation, for example, examined almost 222,000 people over the age of 45 and found that those with a high degree of stress had a significantly higher risk of heart attack or stroke. (5) Another study found that people who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other stress-related psychiatric issues were up to 46 percent more likely to develop an autoimmune disorder later in life. Other effects of chronic stress include:
Elevated blood sugar, increasing risk of diabetes
Weakened immune system
Leaky gut
Reduced ability to burn fat and increase in belly fat
Reduced (inadequate) levels of the adrenal hormone DHEA, testosterone, growth hormone, and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH)
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), which can lead to insulin resistance
Higher risk of depression, anxiety, and mood imbalances
Stress contributes to all modern, chronic disease.
No matter how picture perfect your lifestyle may appear to be—and no matter how healthy your diet is—if you’re not managing your stress effectively, you’re at risk for modern degenerative conditions like heart disease, diabetes, hypothyroidism, and autoimmune disorders.
Breathe Your Way to Stress Relief
While we can’t eliminate all stress from our lives, we can control our responses to it. Stressful experiences often trigger a cascade of fears and anxieties. As a result, we get so carried away by our thought processes that we’re unable to cope with the reality of the moment.
Enter mindful breathing. It’s exactly what it sounds like—being mindful of, or putting all your attention into, your breath.
This type of practice helps ground us in the present moment and focus on what is, right now, rather than what we fear might be. It’s a very helpful mindfulness technique, especially for beginners and for those who resist traditional meditation practices, because it gives you something specific to focus on—your breathing—when your mind starts to wander so you won’t get distracted by worries or other negative emotions.
Research shows that mindful breathing is one of the most effective tools in our toolbox to reduce stress and anxiety. In one study, practicing daily mindful breathing reduced feelings of test anxiety in college students, and eventually scientists stumbled upon the reason why: Deep breathing appears to deactivate a handful of brain nerve cells that trigger anxiety. (7, 8)
Try These Five Breathing Exercises for Stress Management
Ready to give it a try? Here are five breathing techniques to get you started.
1. Basic Beginner Breaths
If you’re just dipping your toes into mindful breathing, keep it as simple and straightforward as possible. The most basic way to do mindful breathing is to focus your attention on your breath, both the inhale and the exhale, ideally sitting or lying down (you may find it easier to hold onto your focus with your eyes closed).
Take exaggerated breaths: a deep three-second inhale through your nose, hold your breath for two seconds, and breathe out through your mouth for four seconds. When your mind wanders, bring your attention once again to your breath. Repeat. Try working your way up to about 15 minutes a day. (9)
2. Diaphragmatic Breathing
This type of breathing—also called “abdominal breathing” or “belly breathing”—slows your heartbeat and can also lower blood pressure. Diaphragmatic breathing reduces the body’s “fight-or-flight” response, researchers have found, and stimulates the activity of the vagal nerve, another important component of stress reduction. (10)
Here’s how to do it: (11)
Lie on your back on a flat surface with your knees bent (if needed, place a pillow under your knees for support)
Put one hand on your upper chest and one below your rib cage, so you can feel your diaphragm move as you breathe
Inhale slowly through your nose, feeling your stomach move out against your hand, then tighten your stomach muscles as you exhale through your mouth
Practice this type of breathing for five to 10 minutes, three to four times a day. As you get more comfortable with this method, you can even place a book on your stomach to make it a little more challenging (and effective).
3. Alternate Nostril Breathing
This technique—where you rotate inhaling through one nostril and exhaling through the other—is a yogic breath control practice. It’s thought to harmonize the two hemispheres of the brain, and, as a result, balances your physical, mental, and emotional well-being. A 2013 study found that people who practiced alternate nostril breathing lowered their perceived stress levels. (12)
Here’s how to do it: (13)
Sit straight up in a comfortable seat, your left palm comfortably in your lap
Lift your right hand to your face so that your pointer and middle fingers rest between your eyebrows
Close your eyes and inhale and exhale deeply through your nose
Close your right nostril with your right thumb while inhaling through your left nostril
Close your left nostril with your ring finger so both nostrils are held closed for a moment, then open your right nostril and exhale slowly through your right side
Inhale through your right nostril, then hold both nostrils closed with your ring finger and thumb
Open your left nostril and exhale slowly through your left side
Repeat five to 10 times once a day, or as desired
4. 4-7-8 Breathing
This technique, developed by integrative medicine guru Andrew Weil, MD, is based on the yogic technique pranayama. Weil himself refers to it as a natural tranquilizer for the nervous system.
How to do it: (14)
Sit with your back straight and place the tip of your tongue behind your upper front teeth. You’ll need to keep it there throughout this breathing exercise
Exhale through your mouth, making a whoosh sound
Close your mouth and inhale through your nose to the silent count of four
Hold your breath for a count of seven
Open your mouth and exhale through it, making a whoosh sound to a count of eight
Repeat this cycle three more times
Repeat this process at least twice a day
5. Body Scan
This breathing technique involves doing deep breathing while focusing your attention on different parts of your body, from head to toe, starting with your forehead and ending at the muscles in your feet. Combat veterans with PTSD who performed it for 20 minutes each day at home for six weeks reported improvements in symptoms, according to a 2016 Oregon Health & Science University study. (15) Another study of women aged 18 to 46 found that those who practiced body scan four days a week for three weeks reported feeling less stress and more happiness than a placebo group. (16) It can be done lying down or sitting—whatever’s most comfortable for you.
Here’s how to do a body scan: (17)
While sitting or lying down, close your eyes and pay attention to your body’s position—for example, the weight of your body against the chair or the floor
Take a deep breath, visualizing oxygen entering your body as you inhale and focusing on a sense of relaxation as you exhale
Focus on the sensations of your feet touching the floor or of your legs pressing against the chair
Now, work your way up to bring attention to other areas of your body. How does your back feel against the chair? Are your hands or stomach tense? (If so, try to relax them.) Loosen your shoulders and let your jaw relax
Take one more moment to notice your whole body, take a breath, and open your eyes
Initially, start with short periods of time of three to five minutes before working your way up to at least 20 minutes at least three times a week. The more you practice body scan, the more benefits you’ll enjoy.

“On a warm spring night, after eating dinner with friends and deciding to do a little late-night dancing, a young lady walks across the top floor of a well-lit parking garage.  She’s tired, worn out from the night of dancing and to help combat her fatigue, one hand is carrying a latte from the local late-night coffee joint down the road while her other hand fumbles in her purse.
Since it’s the top floor of the garage, there are few really good places to mount a security camera, so the ones that do exist are not able to capture much outside of the fact that behind her, a black-clad man with his hood up approaches her from behind as she unlocks her car door, and attacks.  Within seconds, he slams the back of her head, knocking her unconscious with his blow, if not with the ricochet of her head against the roof of the car.  Picking up her keys off the ground, throwing her inside the car bodily, he’s driving off through the garage, and is out of camera range very quickly to do…well, just about anything he wants.”
While this is a fictional situation, it’s the kind of thing that I’m starting to think about now that my daughter is going to be attending college in the big city.  She has basic skills in martial arts, an interest based on an activity that I required of her when she was a young teen, but doesn’t have a firearm and doesn’t carry any weapons in her purse.  What can she do to prevent this kind of attack?
3 Ways to Discourage Street Attacks
#1 – Situational Awareness & Mindfulness
Millennials often get a bad rap for being too tied into their phone, but it’s not only them. People of every age do it and they need to beware of the risks of making their way through life oblivious to those around them.  In a world where any kind of media is immediately available through so many channels, it’s easy to put your headphones in and enjoy a little entertainment on those lonely walks down the streets.  I love podcasts myself, and I know how easy it is to get lost in what the hosts are discussing and become engrossed to the point of making secondary the thoughts about where you are, where you’re going, what you planned on doing, and how you’re getting there.
Situational Awareness is simply the act of being constantly aware of what is happening around you.  It is essential in any kind of potentially dangerous situation to be mindful of what is happening around you, keeping a clear head, focusing on the present situation and your present environment.  Use as many of your senses as you can – listen to the ambient sounds, notice the smells of your environment, put your eyes and your head on a swivel, looking behind you every thirty seconds or so, and more often if entering a new environment.
I used the word “mindful” in the last paragraph, because Mindfulness is becoming a part of the zeitgeist of modern life as well.  This age-old concept is very simply a set of techniques designed to help you focus on the present moment, and what is happening around you – very similar to situational awareness.  Looking up some simple mindfulness exercises like “leaves on a stream” or even practicing basic meditation is a good way to help build your tolerance for long periods of being in the moment.
In the above situation, the young lady who was attacked likely had no idea that there was someone else on the roof of the parking garage, much less that he was following her, even as closely as he would have had to in order to attack so quickly.  Having no situational awareness, and likely being lost in a world of her own thoughts or in cell phone music or audio programs was her first big mistake.  Had she been looking around, aware of her situation, and perhaps even made eye contact with the attacker on her way towards her car, she may have done enough to encourage him to choose a different target.
#2 – Providing Disinformation
If you were an attacker who wanted to prey on someone, would you choose a man or a woman to attack?  Young or middle aged?
Almost everyone would choose a young female. The reasons are simple – she’s less likely to have any interest in martial arts or combat sports, she’s probably smaller and less muscular than her male counterparts, she likely carries more cash or valuable jewelry, and is stereotyped as being more naïve by the media and society at large.  Whether any specific female fits those categories is unimportant, its true that the simple act of being a female makes you a bigger target.
Being a young female isn’t something you can control.  Or is it?
No transgender stuff here.  But it’s possible, highly likely even, that the attacker in the above situation has done at least a small amount of research on this car he found on the top floor of a parking garage late at night, and it’s surprising what you can figure out about someone based on their car.
Does she have custom vanity license plates?  If so, those are generally a strong indicator that this is a female, unless the plates say something decidedly masculine like “GUNDUDE8” or “PREP MAN”.  If he peeks inside and sees custom leopard print seat covers, a steering wheel cover, or fuzzy dice on the rearview mirror, then assumptions can easily be made.   Other information can be gleanes as well.  If he sees a Victoria’s Secrets bag in your passenger seat, then what’s he going to assume?  The contents of your backseat can tell a lot about a person.  Makeup bags, the presence of an infant car seat or a booster, bumper stickers – all of these things say something about you, and help attackers decide if you’re a good target. While they don’t all “scream” female, they do all scream “unfocused” or having their concentration distracted by errands, a child, whatever. We are all guilty of this, especially in places we have frequented where “nothing has ever happened.” Reality is it only has to happen once to be life altering.
The worst offenders of the car customization market are the stick figures that populate the back windows of far too many cars.  Sure, they’re kind of cute, but they give way too much information about who you are, who is in your family, their ages and their interests.  If you have a single woman with two children on there, chances are that you’re coming out to your car either alone, or with two little ankle biters who are occupying all of your attention.
The best tip I’ve heard for single young women who are at risk for being attacked near their car is to give would-be attackers plenty of disinformation designed to encourage them to choose a different target.  A big, well-worn pair of men’s athletic shoes in the back seat, or a duffel bag covered in visible weight-lifting patches and karate logos will go a long way towards indicating to any smart criminals that the person who owns this vehicle is not to be trifled with.
Bumper stickers are also a good way to dissuade people.  Pro-gun bumper stickers, particularly if they endorse concealed carry, are a good place to start, as are indicators that you’re interested in things like MMA, wrestling, martial arts, or bodybuilding, whether you are or not. I have heard the counter-argument, that people “looking for guns to steal” look for cars with an NRA sticker (USMC emblem, etc.) The normal pattern of such a person is to follow you home to see what house to target for a robbery, when they observe you have left the premises. Yes, most people like this have gun safes – do you put your bedside go-to weapon in your gun safe every time you leave your house?
Spiked dog collars are also a simple thing to throw in the backseat.  While that might not be something that will dissuade an attacker in the aforementioned situation, it will work wonders for dissuading attackers spying on your car in a park, forest preserve or who might be looking at your home as a potential target.
Use your normal routine and patterns to decide what kinds of things you want to decorate with, or stash in your car. Understanding the places where you’re likely to be attacked will provide the best understanding of what will work best for you.
#3 – Just do it
People who prey on others are often quite a bit smarter than you might think.  Most have done their homework, and having looked inside your car to find evidence that you may be a very strong male or have a very large dog, might be smart enough to avoid you as a potential attackee.  Despite this, an often cited fact about criminals shows that most crimes that are committed in the US are crimes not borne from passion or careful thinking, but simply crimes of opportunity.
The attacker in the situation above may have been in line behind her in the coffee shop and noticed a $100 bill in her wallet, and taken the chance to follow her.  He may have just been a normal guy walking to his own car when he had a desperate feeling that he could get something from her.  Sometimes, the criminals will ignore any evidence of misinformation you provide, or maybe they’ve cased your car before and seen through your deception.
Sometimes, you just have to fight.  Or at least look like you’re ready for a fight.
Many will advise keeping some kind of weapon in the purse, and it’s hard to deny that this would be a good idea, but I would adovcate that, if not well trained in the use of a knife, pepper spray, a pistol, or whatver weapon might make sense for a young lady to carry, that weapon will be useless.  It might also function as a distraction – it’s mere existance forcing the attacked person to spend valuable reaction time digging around for the weapon instead of running, adopting a defensive posture, striking back, finding some other form of help, or doing almost anything else that may be more productive in helping the situation.
Instead, the simple act of looking ready for a fight is good enough.  Stand up straighter when you walk, turn your head when you look, not just your eyes.  Proactively say hi to people on the street to indicate that you notice them, as this can unnerve criminals who are doing their best to avoid notice.
Remember that if the need arises to defend yourself, it is nearly impossible to do so without a free hand.  If you carry a purse, consider keeping your hand inside it as you walk, not fishing for anything, but as if you’re holding onto something.  The fear of the unknown weapon in your hand may do enough to scare someone off.
Anyone, female or not, would also do well to consider what kinds of objects that you keep on your person and how they may be used as a weapon.  Pocket knives are an obvious choice, but making a fist around your car keys creates a deadly combination of striking and slashing weapons that can do serious damage.  Aerosol deodorant or hair spray is not a great choice, but it can certainly burn the eyes of an attacker if you get lucky.  Using the small, rounded edge of a hairbrush as a striking tool can be helpful to those who don’t have a lot of experience using their fists to punch, and it will likely cause more damage if you don’t already have any martial arts training.
Before exiting the stairwell or elevator, this young women should have had her keys ready in her dominant hand, with the key poking out through her middle and index finger, her hand in a fist.  Even with an improper strike, this will cause damage to any attacker.  That’s a nice easy weapon to carry that will do the damage, doesn’t require specific training, and will help you stay safe out there in the big bad city. And for those of us with “electronic key bobs”, consider investing in some sharp jewelry/bottle-opener thingy’s to add to the key ring. Also, never forget your extended thumb forward when making a fist as this can be devastating to an eye, a throat, even a kidney. Then again, there is this.
