another probably uninspiring music au from me but i cant help it music is such a soulmate sort of thing

marcoace meetcute that maybe ill turn into a hot comic one day and its where Marco’s an overqualified pianist, working the night shift at a schmoozy ritzy high class hotel chain cigar lounge

He sometimes plays alone sometimes with a band sometimes with a singer, but hes never met his match yet, he’s never found that spark inside them, this is a paycheck for all his colleagues and collaborators

And then he’s introduced to Ace, a young man who certainly doesnt look like he belongs to this scene, hes far too young, far too wild, far too loud

he almost laughs when Ace says he’s the new lounge singer, Marco isnt judgemental, but, its a little difficult when Ace looks like one of the many overworked college kids scuttling around the city, when he’s got visible tattoos and bedhead and a smile that screams mischief abundance

But he shakes his hand nonetheless and welcomes him warmly as he always does, hopes for a friendly working relationship until Ace inevitably finds greener pastures

Night falls and Marco warms up with his usual ripple of harmonics and pentatonics, scales both major and minor when Ace finally joins him on the soft elevated stage,

he looks good actually, incredible, genuinely, the suit is well cut and his hair is combed handsomely over to one side, revealing an enviable profile with cheekbones that could almost rival marcos himself

The lounge the bar everything opens and the small talk theyd been enjoying comes to an end, for Marco its showtime and he can only hope Ace can keep up

They have a safe song roster, time hadnt allowed them to practice together but Ace had assured him he was prepared, trusting his professional confidence, Marco leads with the opening bars and just as he loses himself in the melody Ace begins to sing and just like that its that spark that feeling, Marco plays by rigorously trained muscle memory alone, head jerking up to watch the way Ace almost leans, sways into against the mic stand his voice drops drastically, deep, raspy so so different from his normal timbre

He gets it now, what people mean when youll know them when you hear it, because Ace has felt it just the same way he has, the lightning crackling inside his ribcage, the hook sliding gutting him with a hot bubbly feeling

Their set blurs by and by the last song Ace has meandered his way closer to Marco, magnetised to the pianist, taking the mic with him holds it in a way Marco fucking wishes was him instead, eyes lidded, dark hair scorching over his freckled features

The way Ace looks at him, the way the lyrics suddenly feel weighted and full of meaning leaves Marco dry mouthed and lightheaded

Perhaps its the way Ace leaves him, expression coy in a sultry kind of way has Marco striding after him, after theyve thanked their audience, grasping Ace by his wrist behind velvet curtains, feels the sharp edge of cufflinks when Ace tugs away with a soft “we shouldnt—“

Flustered at their proximity and the heat, Marco lets him go this time, but he knows, he knows Ace knows he does

And Marco finds hes alright with waiting just a little longer

Already answered smth similar re: Marius so here's another opinion......what makes exR actually appealing isn't whether or not the characters themselves like (or dislike) each other but rather, the Symbolism of it all. Enjolras clearly doesn't like Grantaire, and I'd argue that Grantaire himself doesn't even know the full extent of his love for Enjolras, but it doesn't matter what these bozos think; their fates are already intertwined, whether they like it or not. They are "a phenomenon which is often observable"; Grantaire simply "admired his opposite by instinct". They have no control over their relationship to each other! They are soulmates without even knowing or caring about it. They are a match made in hell. Grantaire literally cannot exist without Enjolras, and it is simply nature that Enjolras will always have someone trailing after him like a fart cloud. Only in death can they even BEGIN to understand each other. Canonically, their inherent tragedy is what's so appealing about them......

Other than the obvious digressions....its hard to choose one plot-related part because Hugo is so good at action and emotion and dialogue. I suppose I'd answer this a little differently then and say the entire part at the end where Valjean gets ostracised by Marius and falls slowly into (even more) depression. It's not tedious or boring per se but it just HURTS reading it. I know I said one post ago that it's not solely Marius' or Valjean's fault and that ultimately, that's just how the cookie crumbles when these two idiots with Baggage™️ interact with each other, but this is still the part that I stop at during my rereads. I haven't even reached this part yet in my 1972 watch!

22. favourite part of canon that everyone else ignores

Anything Cosette related tbh, but the one thing that gets glossed over often is almost how....feral she becomes, living under the Thénardiers. A lot of adaptations (especially the musical) like to keep her innocent and pure even through her years of abuse but it doesn't quite work like that in the story. The importance of Cosette's time at the inn is to show how cruelty changes people, no matter how kind or innocent they were before. Her experience here needs to parallel Valjean's experience in prison! We need to know that "injustice had made her peevish, and misery had made her ugly". Cosette cannot remain perfect when suffering under the hands of the Thénardiers; it is only when they are removed that she can flourish as the kind, brave soul we know she is!

Just realised the question said "favourite part of canon"....obviously her abusive childhood is not my favourite part, but it's certainly an important part of Cosette's character, as well as the story as a whole!

i think sung goes into every year kinda hoping that he’ll find his ~soulmate and they can get married and have kids

idt it’s the same as it would be for ki for example, like sung isn’t necessarily love Obsessed until he’s faced w the potential for love. but he really wants a deep love and esp as he gets older and his parents are getting harder on his case abt it (which makes a lil more sense given sung’s brother got married at like 19 and has two whole ass kids and he’s the Younger sibling), it’s on his mind more

he’s quite vague about it, like it’s a faceless semi-woman in his head that loves him and they love their kids? tiny domestic moments. so yeah he’s stupid and still thinks he can find his ~soulmate in a woman in this next year

quantum is still growing in fame as a 5th year group. january marks their fifth year n while they have a lot of success n a strong fandom, they’re not considered one of the Greats idt? sung doesn’t expect them to become that, though. polaris ‘made it’ after two years, became some impenetrable force after four, n sung thinks if it was gonna happen, it would have happened in that timeframe. but he’s very happy with the level of fame they have. he feels like they’re Respected. his main goal within their fame is to foster closer relationships with new fans that come along. in a general sense he wants to create that closeness, but he knows he has a habit of thinking of those that have been there from debut before those that have come from other eras/storylines, and he doesn’t want them to feel left out. mostly this means he’ll be putting in more effort to interact with fans in the states

songwriting is probably the biggest professional goal he has, not only in that he wants to write more songs, but he wants to be viewed by dms as a part of their songwriting team. that relies partially on connections yk hanging w the songwriters n making sure he can and is sending his songs to the company. but it also relies on him continuing to push himself to make innovative music. similar things could b said abt choreographing, but songwriting is a specific goal in his mind while choreo is a vague ‘yes i am always wanting to get better’

wanting to get better applies to all of sung’s idol skills, which he will grow in, to varying degrees. performance related skills are usually what he has the most growth in year by year

he also will have a new year type goal to keep the content in sun’s goodnight fresh since it’s going on three years now, but it’s one he won’t end up doing much with. for now the format works
