Saturday night with the Bellas, the girls had just graduated from college, except for Emily that would carry the Bellas' Legacy when they all leave next week after World's, going their separate ways.

Beca was at the improvised bar in the middle of their backyard where they also had build a little stage next to the fence. Sipping on her beer, the brunette watched as her friends (and some other people she was sure weren't invited to the party, but whatever) took turns to go up on stage and sing. Typical aca-party.

Looking around, she saw Jesse at the opposite side of the yard, Benji hugging him and she let out a sigh. She hated to be the one to cause Jesse sadness but she had to break up with him. It's been months that she had noticed she was starting to have feelings for her best friend and it wasn't fair to neither of them to keep their relationship going.

Chloe. She had to find Chloe. It wasn't hard, to be honest, she knew the redhead better than she knew herself and knew she would be in line to get on stage. But Chloe was unusually nervous, which caught Beca's attention. The redhead was fidgeting with her thumb ring and looking around as if looking for someone and when she caught the brunette's eyes, she smiled brightly.

"Hey Chlo, can we talk? It's uh... It's about me and Jesse."

Chloe bit her lip, heart racing a little as she looked away. She knew Beca's plan of moving with Jesse to L.A. after the World's. Not that Beca had told her, but she saw their text messages about it a few days ago and every time Beca tried to talk to her, the redhead changed the subject to avoid that conversation. She wasn't ready to say goodbye to Beca. To neither of the Bellas, honestly. Even thinking about that made her emotional.

"Can it wait? I'm up next"

Beca looked up at the stage, Jessica handing Chloe the microphone. She nodded with a sigh and smiled softly "Yeah... sure, get up there. I'll be waiting."

She was trying to talk to Chloe about her feelings for some time, but for some reason the redhead kept avoiding the subject. Just like now. But she had to do it before it was too late.

Chloe got on stage, requested a melody to the guy that had his phone plugged in a speaker and as the first chords started to play, the girl got to the center of the stage, eyes closed.

Beca stayed close and noticed the redhead was shaking a little. She recognized the song immediately, even though she would never admit that. It was 'Why Don't You Love Me' by Hot Chelle Rae and Demi Lovato, one of Chloe's favorite songs.

Chloe's eyes were still closed and a shaky sigh could be heard over the music, her hear beating faster and faster inside her chest. Since she first listened to this song last year she knew she had to sing it to Beca to tell her how she feels. And she had, actually, plenty of times. But it was just so casually that Baca had barely noticed.

She was pouring her soul in every word and Beca could feel it. The brunette couldn't take her eyes off Chloe, wandering who the redhead was singing it to. It couldn't be for her and the thought of it made Beca's heart ache. If Chloe was in love with her she would've had said something already.

Chloe took a deep breath and opened her eyes, seeing a few faces looking up at her, most of them were her Bellas', smiling to encourage the girl to keep singing. She found Beca in the crowd and locked eyes on hers.

Was... Was Chloe really singing to Beca? The brunette had butterflies in her stomach, and felt so lightheaded that she could only see Chloe, no one else around her existed at the moment. And as Chloe was singing the chorus that's when she noticed. Beca loved Chloe. She was in love with her.

Beca felt her own tears on her face and wiped them away, shaking her head at how stupid she was for not realising her love for the redhead before.

As the song came to an end, Chloe saw Beca rushing to the house and so she left the stage in a hurry. Had she scared Beca away? Gosh,that's why she didn't wanna tell her at the first place.

Beca had her back on the wall, covering her face with her hands, trying to get her heart to stop beating so fast, but a smile on her face. "Beca" Chloe's voice made her heart jump and then calm down the next second. It was crazy how the redhead had that effect on her. "Are you okay?"

She looked at her best friend and her heart jumped again. "How long?"

The redhead bit her lip, fidgeting with her thumb ring. "Since your first year"

"Jesus.." She ran a hand through her hair, looking up at the ceiling. "Why didn't you tell me then?!"

"I was afraid you'd run from me! Just like now!"

"I didn't-" She stopped herself there. She had ran. But just because she didn't want the people at the party to see her crying. "I'm not running from you."

"I know you don't feel the same way and that you're with Jesse and you're moving to L.A. in a week and-"

"Wait how do you know that?"

"You fell asleep with your phone open that day when we were watching 'Mamma Mia!' In my room and he texted you about it. I didn't mean to invade your privacy, just got curious! I'm sorry."

"No, that's okay..."

"And why didn't you tell me about that? And don't tell me that it's because of the World's."

Chloe sounded hurt and the brunette sighed "Because it doesn't matter"

"You're moving to freaking L.A., why doesn't it matter?!"

"Because I broke up with Jesse!" They both kept quiet, just looking at each other's eyes. "I'm not going anymore." Beca noticed she was two steps away from the redhead and didn't even realize she had walked all the way to her.

Beca's gaze drifted to Chloe's lips as she took one step closer. Then another one until she was holding the redhead's face between her hands and pulling her into a kiss.

Chloe's hands flew to the brunette's waist, pulling her closer as she sighed and deepened the kiss. Years dreaming and waiting for this moment and finally she was kissing Beca. The kiss was better than she expected, soft but it really showed the desire and love they both felt for one another, Beca's tongue playing with Chloe's until they ran out of breath and had to break the kiss.

"Come with me to New York" Beca was beaming at Chloe, her cheeks red from the heat between them.

"I would love to, Becs, but-"

"Please? I want to stay with you there. And also... I need someone to share the rent"

Chloe giggled "I'll think about it"

"Okay." Beca gave her a quick kiss on her lips and took her hand. "Let's get back to the party?"

"I have a better idea..." The redhead said and guided Beca to her room.

Achievements Analyzing for the Sake of Characterization

((Because what is my liiiife-

Anyways, after bringing up the Oracle Turret as a means of pointing to a softer side of Chell, I decided to look into the other achievements in both of the Portal games [including the Still Alive port] and Mel’s mod for my interpretation of Chell and Mel’s characters [ignoring the ones that are either achievable outside of the main storylines or through deaths, the former I don’t consider canon to them because, you know, not in their stories, and the latter because them dying is def not canon.] because I find that taking certain actions being rewarded is a tad interesting. 

Now, these are probably me reaching, buuuuut since Chell and Mel are blank slates, I don’t have too much to go off of, so I’m grasping at as many straws as I can for them.

Anyways! Let’s get started!

Chell

Not really much to say with these ones. You get all of these by advancing the game. Though I would like to point out two of them;

One, the Fratricide Achievement. By definition, fratricide is the act of either killing your sibling or your ally. This is the achievement you get for euthanizing your Companion Cube. Both the name of the achievement and its description catches my attention. The title reinforces, at least to me, that Chell felt some connection to her cube in some compacity. However, the description the extent Chell is willing to go to survive. We all no that she is stubborn and never gives up, but this instance demonstrates that Chell, if she absolutely has to, is willing to sacrifice an ally or even a loved one to stay alive. Really, Wheatley’s not too far off when he called her selfish, which, oof-

And the second one is the SaBOTour Achievement, the one you get for following after Wheatley during your little jailbreak. Not much given, just like the little icon, depicting a stick figure [the player] running while holding a core [Wheately]. idk I think it kinda implies Chell’s intention of not just using him for her escape, but genuinely wanting to escape with him. And I think it’s sweet. Maybe I’m reaching here, but god dammit lemme have this-

Chell’s skills(tm). This shows the extent of her reflexes and speed as well as how well she can solve tests. Not only is she good at avoiding getting shot and can solve at least one test without ever even touching the block needed for it [I know you can get this achievement automatically by solving Wheatley’s first test, but you can actually earn it earlier if you’re clever enough in the sixth chamber] but she’s such a pro that she can manipulate a rocket turret to shoot its own rocket, catch a wildly bouncing box before it even touches the ground, and can even complete at least one test in a little over a minute. 

What I’m saying is that she’s practically got super humanly fast thinking and reaction and is overall abnormally efficient. Like, jesus, Chell relax-

Though, to be fair about the last one, the test chamber 10 in question is in Portal 2 Chapter 2, and she’s basically seen it all at this point, so it’s not like she’s naturally this fast.

Chell’s portaling habits. The first two seem to imply Chell testing out the capabilities of the portal gun. Though I am also inclined to believe that along with the Saw That One Coming, Drop Box, and Overclocker Achievements that the first one could also imply that she’s a bit of a show off, or at least that she likes to make personal challenges for herself.

As for the Out of the Blue, this could imply the order in which she puts down the portals.

These are achievements that are rewarded to you for being thorough [I’ll explain the the Scanned Alone Achievement in a sec-] enough to find them. I believe these can point to her being a rather curious and observant person with an experimental “try everything that won’t definitely kill you” sort of thinking. 

And the Scanned Alone Achievement can even further that “Try everything” way of thinking, and also demonstrates that not all her ideas work, but hey, at least she knows. 

Also it’s funny as fuck to think that this was an idea she had before grabbing a defective turret, and I’m disappointed that Wheatley did not comment on it-

Chell’s relationships with the [rather few] sentient beings she’s encountered, not counting the antagonists. The short answer? She loves Companion Cubes and fucking hates Turrets. To the point where she goes out of her way to destroy them once they deactivate.

Though, the No Hard Feelings Achievement demonstrate that she’s not so blinded by hate that she isn’t willing to make exceptions or recognize that not everything is out to hurt her, and even show some compassion every once in a while. Or at the very least mercy.

Oh look, instances of Chell being a defiant lil’ shit. What a surprise-

For real, though, Chell absolutely goes out of her way to be a nuisance to her antagonists in any way she can. Just give her half a god damn chance to do so-

Although the name of the first depicted achievement, Camera Shy, also implies that she doesn’t very much like to be watched, fuuuurther reinforced by her smashing Wheatley’s monitors when solving his tests. Though that could also be her demonstrating just how pissed with him she is-

Mel

Unlike with Chell, I’m skipping Mel’s story related achievements because I don’t have anything to say about them.

Also, Portal Stories: Mel has a lot of achievements that involve you dying [Though I have an interpretation on that that involves one of the few achievements that don’t involve dying], so as a result, I don’t have nearly as much to work with. But I will try-

These all demonstrate both curiosity, sharp eyes, and just absolute stubbornness.

Though unlike Chell, she seems to have less of a want to experiment and more of a want to explore or in the case of the Determined Achievement, to not leave things unfinished. And often times goes against Virgil’s advising against it. Probably OCD as fuck-

Also she recognizes that Companion Cube is shaped like a friend and is sad that she can’t take it with her-

An example of Mel’s bitchitude. This combined with her refusing to take Virgil’s advice at the start of their partnership is that she didn’t particularly like him. Aaaaand now that she met him in person, she can get back at him by making him as frustrated as he made her.

And to be fair, Virgil painted himself as untrustworthy from the moment he woke her up and was overall kind of a jack ass, so yeah, it’s fair to think their relationship is rocky at first. Although overtime they did end up growing on each other, so.

Also a pretty fun reference to when Wheatley tried to bust Chell out-

The only achievement where you can be hurt without fucking dying. And here’s my interpretation on this.

Unlike Chell, not only is she very much inexperienced with the Aperture brand bullshit, but she’s also not quick enough to avoid getting hurt. 

And that could go back to how the experiment she signed up for affected her health. Remember what Virgil said? The chemicals that Mel was pumped full of could cause heart attacks from the mere exposure to them. Not to mention the instances where she was having trouble physically exerting herself.

Rocks falling everywhere? All she could do was walk up the stairs [if she didn’t take the elevator]. Heavy door Virgil directed her to? She couldn’t open it, no matter how hard she tried, so they were forced to go a different route.

And keep in mind, she used to be an Olympic Athlete. A track runner to be more precise. Competed in the 1936 Nuremberg games. And after the cryogenic sleep test, she’s been brought so out of shape that she can’t even run like she used to [probably from atrophy combined with her heart attack prone... heart...]. And then having to navigate so many dangers? It’s not a surprise she’s gotten hurt throughout the journey. Hell, it’s a wonder she survived holy shit-

Aaaaanyways, I think that’s all of the achievements I could find. I would do one for Gel, but I couldn’t find any achievements for Aperture Tag. So. Fack-

Weyr Wednesday: Fandom Weyr -- Parole Officer

Welp, there’s not much happening in DragonVale now that I’ve cleared out all the available dragons. And I happen to have run out of Pern Crash ficlets to share. So, it’s time for a piece from the other Pern crossover I came up with ages ago -- Fandom Weyr! As you might guess from the name, this is a multiverse crossover set on Pern itself, with characters from a bunch of my favorite fandoms living on an island with its own little weyr. The place is run by the Pern version of Vetinari -- hey, if he can keep Ankh-Morpork running smoothly, he can sure as hell handle a weyr. Glados leads the kitchen drudges, which of course includes Chell and Wheatley; Victor (now Vitor) lives in nearby Everglot Sea Hold with his fishing family, drawing maps and composing music in his spare time; Alice’s (or Aliss’s) family helped run a crafthall until their murder by wandering Harper Bumby; and so on and so forth. I never fleshed it out as much as Pern Crash (mostly because I’ve only read two Pern books, both of them for young adults, and both of those were for Menolly’s fire lizard family), but I did do a couple of little fic snippets for it. Here’s the first, for the curious.

Set-up: Vitor and Aliss have been taken to Fandom Weyr -- Aliss having been caught for Bumby’s murder, Vitor as a possible Impression candidate -- except the moment he arrived, he had a screaming panic attack about going “Between.” (Because if anything’s going to trigger Victor’s phobia of absolute darkness, it’s an airless void between places and times.) Aliss is meeting with V’tinari about the punishment for her crime, and for some reason he’s just called in Vitor. . .

“Come.”

The door opened, revealing the very pale face of one Vitor of Everglot Sea Hold. Aliss squinted – was it just her, or had he someone managed to become even whiter since she’d last seen him? Then again, he’s just been summoned into the presence of one of the most renowned and reviled Weyrleaders on Pern, after having a panic attack that the whole Weyr must have heard. I’m surprised he’s not unconscious. “Is our appointment over, Weyrleader?” she asked, glancing at the open gap behind Vitor. But it couldn’t be, he hadn’t actually assigned punishment yet. . . .

“Oh no, please, stay where you are,” V’tinari said pleasantly, before nodding at Vitor. “Do come in. You made quite the impression on my Weyr today, young man.”

“I – I am s-so sorry, sir,” Vitor said as he entered the room, hands twisting together before him. “I r-really had no idea I’d–”

“My Ankth has already spoken to the dragon that brought you here,” V’tinari cut him off. “Apparently his decision to take you was more or less an act of pity.”

Vitor blinked, clearly thrown. “Sir?”

“Yes, Arctith didn’t really think you appropriate for a dragon. You have a spark of what’s necessary to be a good rider – but just a spark. No, he and N’rth simply saw how discontent you were in the Hold of your birth – Everglot Sea Hold, correct?” Vitor nodded. “And am I right in assuming you were the unsuccessful suitor for the Lady Holder’s daughter Vitorea – what a remarkable coincidence with your first names, by the by – and the one who found that corpse the wanderer Barkis tried to conceal?”

Vitor blinked rapidly a few times. “I – yes. Y-yes, that’s me,” he confirmed. “I – d-didn’t realize the story had become so famous.”

“Oh, not really,” V’tinari said with a calm smile. “I just make it my business to know as much as I can about everything on Pern. I was apprenticed as a Harper before Ankth called me.” He shrugged with the ease of a man who has everything under control, even things that technically shouldn’t be under his control. “Old habits die hard.”

“I thought everything about Fandom Weyr involved the old habits dying,” Aliss put in, unable to help herself.

V’tinari turned that stony gaze on her. Aliss held out as long as she could, but the Weyrleader was clearly more practiced than she was at outstaring people. “Joke, sir,” she said at last.

“Ah, of course,” he said. “Do tell me when you feel another coming on.” He turned back to the fidgeting Vitor. “Now, don’t be upset, Vitor – I’m quite glad N’rth made the decision to bring you to my Weyr.”

Vitor looked up, his expression absolutely baffled. “You – are, sir? Even with – with what j-just happened?”

“Oh, half of the boys and girls that have been retrieved by my riders will not Impress,” V’tinari said carelessly. “I wish they’d all give such clear signs of their unsuitableness for the post so we don’t have to waste time putting them on the sands. You, Vitor – you I can place in your appropriate position right away.”

“I’m willing to do anything, Weyrleader,” Vitor said with what he thought was a helpful smile but was more a grimace. Aliss resisted the urge to slap her hand against her face. That sentence probably condemned the poor fellow to emptying latrines and spreading dragon dung over nearby Hold fields.

“Excellent! You’re Aliss’s new parole officer.”

. . .what?!

Vitor seemed as startled as she – probably more, as he hadn’t guessed his companion in the room even needed a parole officer. “Ah – I – I b-beg your pardon, Weyrleader?”

“Whatever for? Having a panic attack isn’t a prosecutable offense,” V’tinari replied, voice smooth as fresh-churned butter. “V’mes would have you in his charge if it were. And as far as I know, you haven’t killed anyone like your new charge.”

Vitor’s eyes snapped to her, wide with shock. Aliss winced. “I would like to point out again that the man in questioned killed my entire family when my sister refused to pretend it was a dragon’s mating flight with him,” she said.

“Yes, and we have ample evidence of his other – activities,” V’tinari said, tiptoeing delicately around what those activities actually were. She supposed she couldn’t blame him, they were wretched. “But the fact is that you have killed someone, so we can’t exactly allow you to roam free. Vitor will keep an eye on you on his new assignment, and you can pay back society by proving your worth as his assistant.”

Now Aliss and Vitor shared a baffled look. “I’m afraid I’m not following, Weyrleader,” Vitor said with considerably more caution in his voice.

“Do you know how large the island the Weyr and its tithed holds occupies?” Both young people shook their heads. “10,000 miles across at our last estimate, and our last estimate is very poor. We need someone to take a proper measure of the place – to draw maps of the best roads between holds and weyr, to find where the medicinal and food plants grow, and to make sure no dangerous fauna lurks in the darkness waiting to reduce our rather meager numbers even further.” He fixed Vitor with a look. “From what I understand, Everglot Sea Hold prospers at least in part because of your skill in drawing maps. I’d like you to put that skill to work for me.”

“You – want me – to map your island?” Vitor said slowly.

“I see you understand me perfectly! And to send back regular reports of whatever animal and plant life you discover. Anything that might be useful to the running of the Weyr.” He smiled suddenly, something that actually looked like a genuine smile. “We have a number of fire lizards on our beaches, by the way. Any eggs that you could secure would be invaluable. And should you wish to take one or two for yourself. . .well, the dragons assure me you would be perfect for the ‘little ones.’”

“And – I’m expected to help him?” Aliss said, staring. This – this didn’t sound like a punishment at all. It sounded like paradise. Yes, she’d have to put up with Vitor, but – he didn’t seem a bad sort when he wasn’t screaming and comparing the cold dark of between to his worst nightmares. Surely this couldn’t be how he intended to see justice done. . . .

Unless he believed you when you said you’d already done it.
