What was the first thing you did after you got up? I rushed to the rooftop so that I could see the sunrise. I also got in the random mood to do a time-lapse of it, but the sun took forrrrrrrr-freaking-ever to come up entirely. I was holding up my phone for like 15 minutes and nothing was happening, so I quit halfway through lol.

What was the name of your first pet? Goldie, because it was a goldfish.

Who was your first big crush? Gabie, I would say.

Where was the first place you drove after you got your license? Chelsea’s 18th birthday dinner was scheduled right after I happened to get my license, and the event took place in a small, quaint little restaurant in Marikina. 

There’s a bit of a funny story here, too – Aaron needed a ride to get there and so I offered to drive him. I picked him up and we were having small talk in the car, and he asked me how long I’ve been driving. I told him that moment was my literal first time driving out and that I just got my license the day before, and he is my first-ever passenger (at that point I’ve never even tried driving solo yet). The horror and immediate distrust on his face was something I will never forget HAHAHA. We got to the place unharmed, but it’s still one of my favorite stories to tell.

Who was your very first friend? It was a kind girl named Kaye back in kindergarten. We were always next to each other in our class lists, so it was inevitable for us to befriend one another. She transferred schools in first grade and I have not seen nor heard from her since.

What was the first thing you ate today? I had another bag of salted egg chips. I’m extremely hooked, lmao.

It was his birthday last Friday and I messaged him if he’d like to receive a gift from us, on behalf of one of our clients; he just replied with his confirmation and details.

If you woke up naked next to the last person to call, would it be awkward? Yep and I’d feel like throwing up almost immediately.

Who is your 10th phone contact? It’s from Jum, who I realize is still listed as Ate Jum on my phone. That’s cute hahaha; I must have gotten her number when we weren’t super close yet. Anyway, she’s been super MIA for like the last two years...basically, ever since she graduated. I believe she has also since moved back to Bicol, so it’s become virtually impossible to see her again. Bums me out and I look forward to the day we somehow end up in the same room once again.

How did you meet them? I met her in my very first journalism major class. I had mixed feelings towards her at first since I found her to be super loud in class, and I initially thought she would only be a one-time classmate and nothing more; but I got to know her more and we even ended up as orgmates, and it turns out she is literally the most hilarious person I know.

Are you related to your 17th phone contact? I have absolutely no clue who it is. I no longer remember what led to it, but Gabie and I swapped the SIM cards in our phones at one point, and for some reason it made me have access to her contacts; the 17th contact on my phone is someone from her list. And since I never hang out in my Contacts app, I’ve never gotten around to deleting those extra numbers I received.

How long have you known your 1st phone contact? Around 6th or 7th grade. I can’t remember the exact grade level she transferred to my school as a new student.

When was the last time you saw them? It’s been at least a year. I remember seeing her on campus very briefly when I was on my way to a certain building for class, while she was walking out of it.

Do they live within 20 minutes of you? If there is zero traffic, I can probably make it to their place within that timeframe, yeah. But realistically, no they don’t.

How did you meet? We initially met in an anti-Marcos protest/rally – I approached they first because they had a wrestling shirt on, heheh – and that’s when I learned we were from the same college. But they rubbed me off the wrong way from our first meeting as they were too extroverted for my liking, and I spent a good chunk of time ignoring him whenever we crossed paths, lmfao. Eventually we were put in the same class at some point, and they even joined my org, and an intensely close friendship started from there.

Could you live with this person? Sure. I think they would never be a boring roommate.

Where are they right now? I have no idea. We don’t really catch up with each other’s lives on a regular basis; we have a very chill, low-maintenance friendship.

Where did you last go out to eat at? Ramen Nagi. I was initially hesitant to show up there and ask for a table for one on a Sunday evening...but it turned out to feel incredibly empowering and freeing. It was definitely awkward at first, but it got a lot easier once I realized literally no one gives a fuck. Or if they did, they didn’t do anything about it and let me mind my own business. That evening was a crucial step in reclaiming my happiness, so I’m glad I made the choice to suck it up and enter the restaurant.

When was the last time you let someone borrow something from you? Last week, when Angela needed our abaca mat as an aesthetic for her grad shoot.

Ayyyy so I mentioned in passing the other day that Jim and Claire had another baby in my Sims series yeah? It’s a boy his name is Ryan but we’ll get to those details in a bit

Anyways, those of you with Sims experience will know that Sims 4 babies are...kinda boring. They’re not really customizable beyond skin tone and they’re tied to their cribs (you can pick them up to take care of them but you can’t carry them around or anything).

But the other day I stumbled across some people who said they liked to work around this by immediately aging up the baby and just using the toddler as a baby via custom poses for a while before making them actually act like a toddler and I was like hey! That’s a pretty good idea!

But while some of the custom poses they linked were cute and would make adorable screencaps, in-game they were rather unnerving since they had no animation on them at all.

GOOD THING I’M AN ANIMATOR

It’s not great since this was my first time attempting to animate in Blender (ugh*) and after struggling with that for a while all I wanted was something just decently functional. Despite this I think it does actually look pretty cute in-game! Maybe later I’ll polish it up a bit; smooth out the loop, add more facial animation, etc. (there is some facial animation on there right now but it’s only on the mouth so you can’t really see it with the pacifier in the way) but for now it’ll do. I’d also like to make a sleeping version at some point.

Good golly gracious it took me forever and a half to settle on that name. Unlike the Adrienette kids who I already had pre-set characters for, I didn’t have any already-made Jlaire babies so I let the game choose a lot about them...including using the “randomize” button until I see a name I like. With this little dude I was legit sitting here for like 10min pushing and re-pushing that button again and again and again until I finally managed to settle on something lol

Anyways, like I said I eventually managed to settle on Ryan, and here we are.

He was born with human-colored skin and brown eyes like his big sister, which of course translated to the pinker skin once I could customize it. To distinguish him just a little bit though, I made his skin a bit darker and eyes a bit lighter than Jamie’s.

Anways, not much left today in the way of story, but here’s a few more screencaps of the fam to end us off!

Jin-Sang knew he was sucking as a Best Man. He’d talked a big game, but he hadn’t planned a single thing for Eric’s Bachelor Party yet. He hadn’t come up with a solid idea of what they’d do for entertainment, let alone chosen a venue. He tried to focus on Eric’s ramblings on honeymoon plans, but he couldn’t help continually glancing over at Shonice. Or more specifically, at Shonice and Jonathan. They were talking animatedly about who knows what, and he felt the tell-tale pangs of jealousy rising up. 

He chided himself for being irrational. He knew Shonice wasn’t interested in Jonathan romantically. Shonice and Jin-Sang had once gotten into a ridiculous discussion about hall passes. Against his better judgment of sticking only to celebrities, Jin-Sang had thrown Jonathan’s name out there. He didn’t know why he had been so reckless. Bringing up someone you actually knew in the hall pass game was potentially relationship-ending, but he had to know what she thought about their tall, blond friend. Shonice had said that while she thought Jonathan was a sweet guy, she had zero physical attraction to him, which pretty much made her the only woman in Sapphire Springs who was immune to the looks and charms of Jonathan Parry.

Shonice reminded Jin-Sang that she preferred her men dark and handsome. Being tall was a nice bonus, but not a requirement. He believed her. Reading people was one of his survival skills, and he knew his girlfriend well enough to know when she was a fibbing. Her tell was that she hugged herself, as if she were physically shielding herself from being found out. She hadn’t done that when she talked about Jonathan. Still, Jin-Sang found himself incapable of looking away from them. He’d done it at Karaoke last week too. While most of Midnight Flows’ patrons had cheered on Eric and Shonice’s duet, he’d scrutinized every minuscule detail of their body language for any sign that there was more than friendship between them. 

He was being paranoid. Eric had practically been in love with Natalia since the womb, and nothing short of C-4 could separate Jonathan from Jerilene. If Jin-Sang couldn’t trust his two very best friends with his girlfriend, who could he trust? Besides, if either he or Shonice had the right to be jealous, it was definitely Shonice by a mile. He was the one who’d had an indiscretion. Not only had Shonice forgiven him when he finally came clean to her about it, but she’d been even more loving to him since his confession.

No matter how many times he’d nearly sabotaged their relationship over the years, she’d never given up on him. He shook his head, trying to shake the anxious feelings away. He needed to get his sh--, stuff, together. He wanted to chuckle as he realized that his recent struggles to not curse out loud had now led him to censoring his mental language too. He owed that to Mrs. Lind and her constant reprimands about his lack of professionalism in his language.  Anyway, Jonathan had been telling him for years that he needed to deal with his abandonment issues. His best friend had been even more insistent since Jin-Sang had confided that he was planning to propose to Shonice. Jonathan had even given Jin-Sang the business card of a therapist.

Though Jin-Sang knew Jonathan meant well, it had stung. Where did Jonathan get off telling him to go therapy? How could Jin-Sang not have abandonment issues when his parents did literally abandon him? 

Jonathan spotted his mentor in the shop and excused himself from Shonice.  Likewise, Jin-Sang excused himself from Eric. Jin-Sang grabbed his girlfriend and gave her a big kiss. He loved that she loved being physically affectionate with him. In the brief time he’d had with his birth family, they’d rarely hugged or kissed him, and very few of his foster families had been affectionate with him either. He desperately craved physical touch, and Shonice had been the first person in his life to give it to him freely and frequently.  

Moreover, she had never given him any reason to believe she was going to leave him like his parents did. Since the day he’d met her, she’d been nothing but open-minded and lenient-- no, indulgent-- towards him. Maybe indulgent to a fault, but he had no intentions of abusing her softhearted nature. He knew he was lucky. In his emotional state, he could have easily fallen for someone abusive, manipulative, or detached, but he managed to have enough emotional and mental health to fall for someone who genuinely and patiently loved him. He’d be the biggest fool to drive her away, so needed to get his jealousy in check ASAP. As he hugged Shonice, he again recalled the business card that he’d tossed into his underwear drawer. He still didn’t relish the idea, but perhaps it was time to swallow his pride and make a call.

Normally, I am so far ahead in my queue that I can work on a post for weeks or even months, but I had less than 24 hours with this piece. I apologize if it is rough.

I got inspired to write this because I’ve noticed that Jin-Sang often watches Shonice. He’s not just looking in her direction because he’ll have a thought bubble of her at the same time. I find it hilarious if he does it when she’s talking to another guy. We saw him do it when she talked to Diontray at the Frat party. He also did it at the Karaoke bar, and again at the bridal shop lot. 

It’s probably just the game preparing to queue up an interaction between them, but I always enjoy reading more into Sim behavior. That’s one of the reasons I love TS2 so much. Each Sim behaves differently and has their own quirks. TS3 and TS4 Sims come off as robotic to me, so I’ve struggled with forming an emotional connection to them.

I’m sorry if you guys are sick of Jin-Sang. He’s the main Sim that’s inspiring me right now, though.

Smartphones are great, but they can be awfully easy to break. A tumble onto concrete or a slip off the table will often lead to chips, cracks, and undesirable dings. If you work in construction, the outdoors, or another harsh environment, you may want something a little more robust than a thin glass sandwich. The rise of the rugged category in phones has been led by Cat, but up until now you had to buy them online. After striking a partnership with Sprint, and with a Verizon deal in the works, the Cat S48c is the first rugged Cat phone to appear in U.S. stores.

The Caterpillar brand is actually licensed to British phone makers, the Bullitt Group, and we reviewed its flagship Cat S61 last year. That phone boasts thermal imaging, air quality monitoring, and a host of other tools, not to mention a whopping price tag, but the Cat S48c is a much simpler, and more affordable prospect at around $500. We took it for a test drive to see how it handles.

Beyond rugged

First and foremost, this is a tough phone. On picking it up, you’ll immediately notice its angular edges, chunky body, and its heft. The Cat S48c weighs 9.1 ounces (258 grams). To put that in perspective, the iPhone XS Max weighs in at 7.3 ounces (208 grams).

The rubberized body feels durable and there are ribs on the back and sides that add grip, both in hand and when you place the phone down on a dashboard or table. You’ll find protective flaps covering all the ports. There’s a standard 3.5mm audio port up top, a USB-C charging port on the bottom edge, and SIM and SD card slots on the right side.

It’s a fairly standard IPS LCD with the ability to register touches even if your hands are wet or you have gloves on.

You’ll also find metallic volume controls on the right spine, while the power button is on the left. Just below the power key there’s a large, orange, textured button that supports the push-to-talk (PTT) feature, transforming your phone into a walkie-talkie. We’re pleased to report that you can reprogram this button to another shortcut function if you don’t want to use PTT.

There are large bezels on the front of the Cat S48c, with the earpiece and a selfie camera up top, and a large, impressively loud, speaker at the bottom along with physical back, home, and recent apps buttons. There’s also a raised lip that protrudes to protect the 5-inch display. It’s a fairly standard IPS LCD with a respectable resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels, Gorilla Glass 5, and the ability to register touches even if your hands are wet or you have gloves on. We found it was generally legible outside, but the brightness doesn’t go that high, so direct sunlight could be an issue.

The Cat S48c scores an IP68 rating, which means there’s no need worry about dust or dirt getting in and it can survive immersion in up to 4 feet of water for 35 minutes without suffering any damage. It also scores MIL-SPEC 810G and Non-Incendive Class1 Div2 certification, which means it can withstand drops of up to 6 feet onto concrete, temperatures of -13°F (-25°C) to 131°F (55°C), and that it won’t ignite flammable gas or vapor.

We used it with dirty hands, got it wet, and dropped it a couple of times and the Cat S48c showed no signs of its ill treatment. One thing we did notice, that you might see in the photos, is that the speaker grill and the lip around the screen are prone to picking up lint and dust.

Solid performance

Inside the Cat S48c there’s a Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 with 4GB of RAM. We found it was plenty speedy enough to navigate around and play games like Asphalt 9 without delay or stutter. It runs Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box, but an update to Android 9.0 Pie has been promised.

Performance is not the reason you’d consider this phone, but it’s good enough that we didn’t find it to be a problem in every day use.

We ran benchmarks and the Cat S48c did okay, scoring 89,922 in AnTuTu, 4,131 for multi-core Geekbench 4, and 702 for 3DMark Slight Shot Extreme (Vulkan). Those scores are close to the Nokia 7.1, but well ahead of the budget Moto G6. However, at $350 and $250 respectively, those phones are considerably cheaper than the Cat S48c. It would be fair to say that performance is not the reason you’d consider this phone, but it’s good enough that we didn’t find it to be a problem in every day use.

We were a little concerned about the bloatware onboard. In addition to Google’s suite of apps, you get a lot of Sprint apps of dubious usefulness, alongside three Uber apps, Lookout, 1Weather, and a bunch of others. You can’t uninstall these, only disable them, which isn’t ideal when the phone only has 32GB of internal storage. Thankfully, there is room for a MicroSD card up to 128GB in size.

Camera

You get a 13-megapixel main camera in the Cat S48c and it’s on a par with most budget phone cameras. With decent lighting, it’s possible to take good photos with this phone. It does have HDR, though you need to be steady and patient to capture shots with it. If you move too much when shooting a snap, you’ll get a bit of blurring. As you might expect, low light photography is noisy and high contrast scenes lead to blown out areas.

The camera app is the main area where we did see some processing delays, but it’s easy to use and does well with close ups and well lit scenes. Cat’s camera app also allows for underwater photography and you can launch it with three presses of the power button. The Cat S48c also has a competent 5-megapixel front-facing camera.

Serious stamina

One of the key features for the target audience here is battery life and so the Cat S48c comes equipped with a 4,000mAh battery. The battery in the iPhone XS Max is 3,174mAh, but that phone boasts a 6.5-inch display. With just a 5-inch display to power, the Cat S48c’s big battery goes a long way. We found it easily lasts two days between charges and light users may squeeze more out of it.

There’s a USB-C port in the Cat S48c and the supplied charger seems to replenish the battery quite quickly. Understandably, considering the toughened body, you won’t find any Qi wireless charging support here.

Plan to drop your phone? A lot? The Cat S48c could make sense

I DOWNLOADED MY FIRST MOD AHHHHHHHHHH!!!!

So, I was getting really tired of how un-vibrant Sims 4 is. I didn’t really notice it/care at first, but once Sage was born I found myself constantly fighting the lighting in the game and setting up temporary lamps everywhere when I took screenshots just because of how un-flattering the Sims 4 lighting is for sims of color. (I mean I’ve had mixed race couples since gen 1 but the focus was always on the founder/heir so if their partner wasn’t as well lit up as they were I didn’t pay much attention to it, but Sage is the first heir to actually have darker skin genetics passed down to him ‘cuz apparently in sims world recessive and dominant genetic traits are reversed... or at least in this family they are rip) 

But anyways, I don’t want to spend time editing my screenshots so I just got a lighting mod for the game. OwO;; 

I just want to make a post now and tag it with wcif because I really don’t download much and if I ever do get cc in addition to this I’ll just post and wcif tag that too so anyone that’s curious can easily see what I’ve got quickly~ 

I also want to add that I’m going to go very in-depth about the installing process because I am not tech-savvy at all and it took me a whole evening to figure all of this out, so if anyone else is in the same boat as me I hope this helps! XD 

Also before I start explaining things I just want to add that before you start changing things, ALWAYS BACK UP YOUR GAME!! Make a copy of The Sims 4 folder that’s in your documents, AND the one that’s in your Origin Games folder that’s on your C drive (or wherever you installed Sims 4). 

First I downloaded NoBlu and NoGlo 

The links to the page their downloads are located along with information from the creator are right there in that title~ 

Those two mods work together, so I suggest getting them both! The NoBlu removes the blue tint that shows up at night time and indoors too I think, and if I understand things correctly the NoGlo removes that blue tint from your sims themselves so they don’t look blue-ish in contrast to the rest of the world that’s now been stripped of that blue tint. 

Like, the point of the blue tint that’s in the game is to make it so you can see things better in the dark, but from what I can tell it also makes day time seem darker too at certain times of the day. So getting rid of this will make night time darker if no lights are around, but I think it makes day time brighter and the lights at night time is brighter too and your sims just react more naturally to lighting~ 

When downloading NoBlu, just pick one of those three files that are there. I picked NoBluLightingReplacement.package 

For NoGlo, there’s two files there, and I downloaded both of them. They’re the NoGloRemover and the EyeSpecularRemover 

NoGlo and EyeSpecularRemover are applied to each sim in cas just like cc, so I’m not sure if I’ll bother using them. But I haven’t had this NoBlu lighting mod for very long so if I end up noticing my sims glowing in the dark with a blueish light then I’ll probably bother to put that on everyone. Maybe. 

These two mods are really easy to download! It’s just like downloading CC, just get the file and put it in Documents -> Electronic Arts -> The Sims 4 -> Mods 

Then I got ReShade 

This mod took me quite a while to figure out... (I’m just sort of challenged when it comes to things like this which is why I don’t use much mods/cc in the first place)  😓 

So this is a program that you can install into a lot of different games, it’s not made just for sims 4, but it works really well on sims 4! The website to download this is https://reshade.me/ 

Additionally, THIS VIDEO is the most helpful tutorial for installing it that I could find (imo). I also want to add to always read the README text files that come with mods when you download them... I’m sure you probably already do that but I’m an impatient derp that couldn’t figure out some things until I read the readme...  >.>;; 

Also, I had an issue when installing ReShade, and I’m just gonna explain everything I went through in case anyone else is having a hard time too, ‘cuz it took me quite a while to find the info. I needed. I also want to add that I use windows 8.1 (unfortunately that’s the only operating system that’s compatible with my laptop, so no windows 10 or 7 for me, I already tried, rip) so the issue I had could of been caused by 8.1′s wonkyness. But I don’t know for sure. 

After it asked me if I want to download a collection of standard effects, and I clicked yes, it said it failed. The program was properly installed into Sims 4, but I had no effects or textures (which is the whole point of getting this...) 

But! This can be fixed by downloading the effects manually and putting them into your bin folder yourself. THIS FORUM on ReShade’s website has this answer and a link to the download for the effects and textures. The very first answer under the OP’s question is the one with the download~ I’m very thankful to that helpful person. Also, I’m just linking the forum instead of the responder’s link itself b/c once you click on their link it downloads the file. It’s not a link to a file share or anything, it’s just the direct download. The ReShade website probably has these up for download on their website somewhere too... But I’m trash at navigating websites that I’m not used to so I have no idea where... But I would assume it’s there somewhere... 

After you have that file, slap it into your sims 4′s bin folder (tutorial I linked before shows where that is). Now, this alone is not all that you need to do. Now that it’s in the file, you need to go into the game and open the ReShade interface. Then you go over to settings and you need to copy paste the path for the program to find the effects and textures. There’s two separate boxes, one for effects and one for textures. 

To do this, go into the shaders folder that’s in your reshade shaders’ folder in your sims 4′s bin folder. Then in the bar at the top of your file’s window that shows all the files you’ve gone into, click on it and copy it. Then tab back to your sims 4 game and paste that info into ReShade’s effects box. Then go into your textures file and do the same things for the textures box in ReShade. 

When you paste them into the ReShade interface they should look something like this: 

C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\The Sims 4\Game\Bin\reshade-shaders\Shaders 

C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\The Sims 4\Game\Bin\reshade-shaders\Textures 

Of course, if you didn’t install this on your C drive it might be a bit different, but you need to find that from wherever you installed Sims 4. 

Once you’ve done all that the issue should be fixed and it’ll now load up all 60 effects and textures that you’ve downloaded every time you start up Sims 4 or tab back into your game after alt tabbing out!!!!! ................. 

So, hooray for it working properly now, BUT GOODNESS DOES THIS ANNOY ME. So like. If you’re going to download a preset from someone else (youtube tutorial I linked already shows how to do that) then I suggest keeping all the files you’ve downloaded. Especially if you’re switching between multiple presets for different occasions. There’s lots of ReShade presets all over tumblr, btw. So have fun looking them up if that’s what you want to do! 

But I’m not doing that. I don’t need all of this. It’s giving me a lag for no reason. SO I DELETED A WHOLE BUNCH OF EFFECTS ‘CUZ FUQ THIS LOADING TIME. 

Be careful not to delete anything important, though. In the shaders folder is the only folder I deleted anything inside of. Anything that was installed in the reshade-shaders folder I left alone. But inside the shaders or textures folder that’s inside of that reshade-shaders folder should be fine to delete things. BUT DON’T DELETE FILES THAT IT NEEDS TO RUN~ 

Anything that is a .fhx file you need to keep. Anything that is a .fx file is simply the effect itself and is safe to delete. I didn’t delete anything in my textures folder because when I downloaded the whole thing from the forum the textures folder didn’t have much in it. This might be different if you were able to install correctly in the first place. 

Anyways! The files I ended up keeping were all the .fhx files and the following effects: Colorfulness.fx, Vibrance.fx, and DPX.fx 

Colorfulness and Vibrance increase the saturation and vibrancy of your game and DPX is one that overall birghtens everything (I think). There’s lots of other effects that do the same things as these but those three are my favorites. Well, I don’t use DPX, it makes it a bit too bright for my eyes, but I decided to keep that one because whenever I’m able to get Seasons, if rainy/snowy days make the game seem way too dark I might want to enable DPX just for those days. 

But for normal sunny days, just checking Colorfulness and Vibrance is enough for me~ I didn’t even mess with the sliders on how much you want it to effect the game because I don’t want to deal with those kind of advanced settings. I just pushed the check mark box on those two and done! 

Now that I only have 3 effects and then the few textures that I never use but aren’t hurting anything by being there, it doesn’t even have a loading time to get ReShade to run properly when starting up my Sims 4 or tabbing back into it. ReShade is just ready to go right away! 

So if you’re wanting to brighten up your game, but have a slower computer and most lighting mods and/or ReShade being the way it normally is lags your game too much, you could consider doing what I did!  :D 

Also, with ReShade, you need to change the way you take screenshots now. Doing it with the C button just takes a picture of your naked game, not the ReShade effects. 

So, ReShade’s default hotkey for taking screenshots is Prt Scrn, so you can use that button now or you can change which button you want to take screenshots in the settings tab of ReShade’s interface. But the point is just pushing C doesn’t capture the ReShade effects so you’ll need a different button! 

Also! In ReShade’s settings tab, you need to change the screenshot format if you want to upload your ReShade screenies to tumblr! Its default is set to Bitmap, which tumblr doesn’t support, so change it so it saves as a PNG file instead!!! 

You can also change the path for where it’s going to drop your screenshots off at. The default is set to Sims 4′s bin folder, so if you want it to drop off screenshots in a different folder that’s dedicated to just screenshots and doesn’t have your game’s other important things in it, you’ll need to change the path for that (it’s the same as when you changed the path for it to find the effects and textures, just copy paste where you want it to go). 

Keep in mind that if you move the folder you told ReShade to dump its screenshots at then you’ll need to update the path in ReShade’s interface or it won’t be able to find the folder and you won’t get your screenies~ 

So yea! That’s all the info. I have!! I hope this helps someone that wants to use ReShade but has been confused about it like I was!! 😂

The brand new OnePlus 6T is the first OnePlus phone to be Verizon certified.

However, owners of the device are saying using the phone on Big Red is a bit tricky.

Below, we’ll tell you what you need to do to get the best possible experience using the OnePlus 6T on Verizon.

A few days before OnePlus launched the OnePlus 6T in New York City, news leaked that the device would be the first from the company to be certified to work on the Verizon network. Sure enough, OnePlus confirmed the news during its launch event.

Some reps won’t know what you’re talking about

If you get ahold of a Verizon rep and ask them to please update your network account so it works in a CDMA-less phone, you might find they have no idea what you’re talking about. According to users on Reddit and the OnePlus forums, some reps know exactly what this means while others are totally in the dark.

This problem stems from the billing side of Verizon and the network side not being in sync. For example, the network might know you’re using a certified OnePlus 6T, but your billing account doesn’t show that. In that case, the rep will not be able to update your account.

When that happens, you need to inform the rep of this issue and have them make sure the billing and network accounts are synced. Once things are synced up, the rep should see the CDMA-less option and then enable it for you.

As a side note, if you would like to do this work ahead of time, you can update your billing information yourself. Log in to your Verizon account at verizonwireless.com and navigate to My Verizon > My Device > Activate or Switch Device > Activate on an Existing Line. Once there, follow the instructions and you’ll be one step ahead of the game.

Steps to activate OnePlus 6T on Verizon

Now that you know what the problem is, here are the steps you should take to activate your OnePlus 6T on the Verizon network:

Call or start an online chat with a support rep and tell them you are trying to activate a Verizon-certified phone on your account.

Inform them that they need to set the device as CDMA-less, aka, LTE-only. If that works, great. If not…

Ask them to ensure that both the billing and network profiles for your account are the same, i.e., they both say you are using a OnePlus 6T.

Once the billing/network sync is complete, the rep should see the CDMA-less setting in your network account.

It should only take a few minutes for the CDMA-less change to hit your OnePlus 6T.

Realme X50 Pro 5G Review

Is India ready for a 5G smartphone? The short answer is no. We have no commercial 5G networks and no clear indications that they will be rolling out in India in the near future. Major telecom operators are struggling after having slashed tariffs thanks to price wars over the past few years, so we can’t be sure that any of them will undertake major infrastructure upgrades across the country this year, and then of course there’s the massive cost of 5G spectrum blocks. When 5G rolls out, it will likely cost more than we are all used to paying now, and it will be a while before 5G-enabled phones are commonplace.

The long answer is that 5G is coming anyway, and if you want to be one of the first to be able to use it when towers do light up, you might as well have a 5G phone now. Realme and several other companies are hoping to capture this early adopter market. Besides, it doesn’t make sense to develop 5G-capable flagships for some parts of the world and entirely different products for others. The Realme X50 Pro 5G is not only Realme’s most expensive model yet in India, but it’s also the first 5G phone and the first one with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 865 processor to officially be launched in India.

We won’t be able to test its 5G functionality but we can tell you whether it’s worth spending your money on, and whether this phone offers potential future functionality at the cost of current-day usability.

  Realme X50 Pro 5G design

In a relatively short span of time, Realme has established its brand aesthetic and the X50 Pro looks a lot like the company’s previous models. This phone is a little blockier than other Realme models but it still feels modern. The front and rear are both made of Corning Gorilla Glass, and the screen is interrupted by a dual-camera cutout in the upper left corner rather than a notch. There’s also a noticeable chin below the screen. 

As for the rear, Realme has gone for subdued solid colours and no gradients or patterns for this high-end device although the glass does appear to have some depth and the colour shifts a little when you move the phone in your hands. You only get a choice between Rust Red and Moss Green, so there’s no completely sober option. While the texture of the rear glass appears frosted, it’s actually quite smooth and a little slippery.

We have Realme’s familiar vertical camera strip on in the upper left corner of the rear, though it does annoy us a little that the four lenses are very unevenly spaced. The power button is on the right and volume buttons are on the left, low enough to be within reach. On the bottom, we have the USB Type-C port, speaker, and SIM tray. We have to point out that there’s no 3.5mm audio socket, which is frustrating. Realme representatives told Gadgets 360 that while fans of its budget phones needn’t worry just yet, the company believes that high-end phone buyers are ready to go exclusively wireless.

The frame of the phone is made of metal and the overall construction quality is very good. The Realme X50 Pro 5G does feel like a pretty high-end phone; at least on par with current OnePlus offerings in the same price bracket. Unfortunately it’s quite a bit heavier than average at 205g. We found one-handed usage difficult because of how tall the 6.4-inch 20:9 screen is and how smooth the glass back is.

The big news here is of course 5G, which is enabled by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 processor and its companion Snapdragon X55 modem. If used to its full potential on a suitable 5G network, Qualcomm indicates potential download speeds of 7.5Gbps and uploads at 3Gbps, which is just staggering. We don’t know what standards each carrier here will adopt, but Qualcomm boasts of support for mmWave and sub-6, the current major 5G implementations rolling out worldwide.

The Snapdragon 865 is also a brand new flagship processor, which we’re very eager to test. It’s built around four Qualcomm Kryo 585 Silver efficiency cores running at 1.8GHz, three performance Kryo 585 Gold cores at 2.42GHz, and one additional Kryo 585 Gold core running at up to 2.82GHz. There’s also the top-end Adreno 650 integrated GPU, and improved subsystems for the cameras, AI processing, gaming, ambient sensors, audio, and more.

Display quality is also one of the X50 Pro 5G’s selling points. Realme has used a 6.44-inch Super AMOLED HDR10+ panel with a 90Hz refresh rate and 1080×2400 pixel resolution. You can set the refresh rate to 60Hz, 90Hz, or Auto, to balance performance and battery life. Speaking of which, the battery capacity is 4200mAh and Realme claims it can be charged from zero to 100 percent in just 35 minutes using the included 65W ‘SuperDart’ charger.

Realme offers the X50 Pro 5G in three variants: the base offering priced at Rs. 37,999 has 6GB of RAM with 128GB of storage; you can step up to 8GB of RAM with the same 128GB of storage for Rs. 39,999; and the top-end option gives you 12GB of RAM with 256GB of storage, but it will set you back by Rs. 44,999.

The company says it has used LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.0 storage to make this phone quick and responsive. However, you don’t get a microSD card slot. There’s a vapour cooling system for the processor and various other modern conveniences such as dual-frequency GPS as well as NavIC support, stereo speakers, NFC, Wi-Fi 6, and Bluetooth 5.1 with the AptX HD audio codec.

What you won’t find on this phone are wireless charging, an IP water and dust resistance rating, a more exotic selection of cameras, and a super-sharp display. Much like OnePlus with the OnePlus 7T (Review) and the upcoming 8 series, Realme has held back on features in order to hit an attractive price point.

As for software, we have Android 10 with Realme UI 1.1 on top, which is a slightly customised version of Oppo’s ColorOS. The UI is fairly simple and sticks to the general layout of stock Android, but there are a few modidications. The Settings app has a lot of additional categories and things might not always be where you expect to find them. You also get lots of UI personalisation options including a choice of icon styles, control over the icon grid density, and the ability to dispense with an app drawer so all icons are placed on your phone’s homescreen.

Some of Realme’s own features include Game Space, which now lets you prioritise a game’s Internet traffic; lighting effects around the screen’s edges for notifications; an ambient display mode (disabled by default); driving and riding modes; app cloning; and the ability to feed dummy personal information to apps to protect your privacy.

The initial phone setup process includes a step that tries to make you download more apps. The default “lockscreen magazine” shows promoted content, but this can be disabled easily. We noticed a lot of clickbait spam notifications from the Realme UI’s web browser, and we weren’t thrilled about having multiple app and game stores plus preinstalled bloatware apps, many of which can’t be uninstalled.

We obviously had high expectations thanks to the Snapdragon 865 processor, which sets a new standard for performance. Needless to say, we had no trouble at all with speed and responsiveness when using this phone. We haven’t felt any lack of performance from the past few generations of flagship SoCs, so it’s hard to tell that there’s anything new going on under the hood when going about your everyday business. The 90Hz screen, LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.0 storage also contribute to this phone’s overall snappiness.

Benchmarks of course exist to illustrate what eyeballing a device can’t adequately differentiate. AnTuTu gave us a stratospheric tally of 584,447, and Geekbench 5’s single- and multi-core scores of 905 and 3,314 respectively. GFXBench’s T-rex and Manhattan 3.1 tests both maxed out at 60fps, while even the demanding Car Chase test ran at 45fps. 3DMark’s Slingshot Extreme and Unlimited scores were 7,263 and 9,837. The Realme X50 Pro 5G even has a clear lead over the Samsung Galaxy S20+ (Review) with its Exynos 990 SoC, which is Samsung’s in-house equivalent.

The Realme X50 Pro 5G’s screen is excellent, with nice vibrant colours and adequate brightness. It isn’t as crisp as the 1440p screens you’ll see on more expensive flagship-grade phones, but we don’t think anyone will complain. The wide dual-camera cutout can be distracting when watching full-screen video, but at least it’s in one corner and not centred. The stereo speakers on this phone are a very pleasant surprise – sound is very loud and rich, with a reasonable amount of bass, and distortion is under control unless you max out the volume.

We used this phone for all our everyday activities including streaming media, games, photography, and general entertainment. We only felt the rear get a little warm when running tests and recording 4K video for long stretches. We played PUBG Mobile and were able to bump the graphics quality up to HDR and the frame rate to Ultra with no noticeable reduction in smoothness or responsiveness. Asphalt 9: Legends was also thoroughly enjoyable with no stuttering whatsoever.

Realme has managed to deliver impressive battery life as well. 4200mAh might not seem like a lot these days but the Realme X50 Pro manages to make that last for well over a full day. We didn’t have to charge our unit till midway through the second morning after using it throughout the day. Our HD video loop test ran for 19 hours, 4 minutes.

Super-quick charging is one of this phone’s USPs and we did find this very convenient. The bundled 65W charger is bulky and heavy, and you’ll need to carry it around with you if it’s to be useful. We managed to go from completely dead to 25 percent in roughly 7 minutes, 50 percent in just over 14 minutes, and 75 percent in 22 minutes, after which the charging rate began to reduce. A full charge took exactly 41 minutes, 16 seconds which is longer than Realme’s 35 minute claim, but still extraordinary.

The Realme X50 Pro has four rear cameras, as is the norm these days. First up is a 64-megapixel primary camera based on the Samsung GW1 sensor, with an f/1.8 aperture. There’s also an 8-megapixel f/2.3 wide-angle camera which is now fairly common even on low-end phones, but in this case doubles as the macro camera. The biggest surprise here is the 12-megapixel telephoto camera which gives you 2X optical zoom but has an f/2.5 aperture. Finally, there’s a 2-megapixel monochrome depth camera. On the front of the phone we have a 32-megapixel primary camera and an 8-megapixel wide-angle one.

All in all, this feels like Realme checking boxes rather than choosing hardware that pushes boundaries or delivers killer photographic capabilities. On the other hand, Realme is playing up many aspects of the X50 Pro 5G’s camera software. There’s Night Mode 3.0 with a Tripod setting that lets you have an exposure as long as 50 seconds if the phone is stable. Video stabilisation is implemented on both front cameras, and there’s also continuous Portrait Mode for video giving you depth effects, plus 120fps slow motion recording.

The camera app is fairly well laid out but has some quirks. You can tap the dots above the shutter button to quickly switch between the wide-angle camera, standard, and optical zoom cameras, and there’s another dot for 5X hybrid zoom. You can go beyond this to 20X digital zoom, but you wouldn’t know this without long-pressing any of the dots. This brings up a more granular zoom slider, but strangely you have to drag your finger back towards where the lower zoom level dots were to zoom in farther.

Daylight photos seemed richly detailed with crisp focus, but slightly subdued colours. A little grain was visible when reviewing photos at full size. The phone did handle exposures well even when shooting against the sun, and we had no trouble using the camera app. The wide-angle camera works well enough and distortion at the edges was minimal. Photos are good enough to use and aren’t visibly worse than those taken with the primary camera when seen on the phone’s own screen, but you can’t expect the same level of detail at full size.

The telephoto camera is also useful and the photos we took at 2X were fine in terms of quality. Things do degrade when you get into the digital and hybrid zoom ranges but in the daytime at least you might be able to pick out some detail in the distance.

We had a lot of trouble trying to focus on macro subjects and the app didn’t help with prompts when we were trying to move closer to or farther away from what we were shooting. Some trial and error might be required, and it doesn’t seem to work well for small subjects even if the background is in the distance.

On the other hand Portrait Mode gave us some very impressive results, preserving fine details on our subjects and gently blurring the background to make subjects really stand out. Even without Portrait Mode, there was some very pleasant depth of field.

At night, photo quality was okay but not always great. We did have to hold very still as motion blur could be an issue thanks to the shutter staying open very long. Photos were bright and colours were well represented though. Strangely, Night Mode gave us some extremely weird results with extremely distorted colours, and details weren’t improved that much in some shots. We wouldn’t depend on this mode, and we hope software fixes can take care of this in the future.

The wide-angle and telephoto cameras both did okay jobs if there was enough light around, and the results were murky but usable. We did often notice that the Realme X50 Pro 5G couldn’t decide whether to use the telephoto camera or default back to the primary camera with a digital zoom, and the viewfinder would be stuck visibly and rapidly switching between the two views. The threshold of light required for the phone to decide between these options could also use some tweaking.

Our main complaint with the front cameras is that beautification is on by default and it takes a lot of tapping to turn all the supposed enhancements off. Photos looked good even at night. Edges were defined well in portait shots, but backgrounds were sometimes overexposed.

You can shoot video at up to 4K. Stabilisation isn’t great though, and video that we shot while walking was very jerky. Colours were way overblown and oversaturated at 4K both in the daytime and at night, making video look artificial and unpleasant. The tone was much more neutral and natural at 1080p. We did notice some shimmer and jerkiness in clips shot at night, but they were bright enough and detail was surprisingly good while noise was under control.

Verdict

The Realme X50 Pro offers 5G without making it a premium feature that you have to pay extra for. Sure, 5G isn’t a practical reality in India yet, but you might be able to use it when traveling abroad and it can’t hurt to be ready. We’d have had reservations if other features had been compromised relative to other phones at this price level, but that doesn’t seem to be the case.

This smartphone competes at the same price level as the OnePlus 7T and is in many ways more modern and capable – we don’t know how much time Realme will have to capitalise on its first-mover advantage before the OnePlus 8 series is announced, but for now, its lead is clear.

Among the Realme X50 Pro’s best attributes are its super-fast charging, versatile cameras, powerful processor, and slick overall look and feel. You don’t get wireless charging or an IP rating, and we’d have liked a less slippery back, but these are minor issues considering the price.

If features and specifications aren’t everything, you could check out last year’s Samsung Galaxy S10e (Review) or the more recent Galaxy S10 Lite (Review). The iQoo 3, from the house of Vivo, offers 5G on one variant and it will be interesting to see how that model stacks up. The iPhone XR (Review) could also be worth considering since its price drops to around this level when it goes on sale.

But having the best camera phone does not automatically means you can take the best photos. What smartphone cameras lack compared to its DSLR counterparts can be made up with these essential accessories to remove some of the limitations allowing it to taken even better photos.

1. Lenses

DSLRs and Mirrorless cameras are not the only ones having all the fun with interchangeable lenses and filters. You can do the same with smartphones too. The problem with smartphone lenses are that they have fixed zoom. While you may get a second telephoto lens or a wide angle lens in a dual camera setup, for optical zoom or wide angle view, these lenses are just that, as it comes with the phone.

With add-on lenses, ones that go over your existing lens, you can take advantage of fisheye, super-wide angle or macro shots beyond your standard point and shoot. Some add-ons even offer interchangeable lens system that lets you swap lenses quickly. The trick is to choose the snap-on or clip-on lenses that work with your phone and for the kind of photography you wish to do.

Most of these lens are even designed for work on the front facing or selfie camera. What you need to watch out for is how these lenses will cope if you have a case on your phone. Most slip-on or snap-on lenses are designed to work on the phone only, so you may need to ditch your case. Other are designed to work with third party cases or a compatible phone case is offered as an option.

While you can buy just about any clip-on lenses for any smartphone at reasonably low prices, the ones that are designed specifically to work with a certain model are those that will offer the best quality. Olloclip has lens kits designed specifically for iPhone 7, 8 and iPhone X with a wide range of functions but it will only work with their own phone cases which are optional.

2. Lights

While most smartphones promises low light performance with bigger aperture, nothing beats an extra light source to reduce noise and grain in your photos while ensuring better detail and contrast. Relying on the onboard LED flash alone for low light shots and videos can only mean one thing, an over exposed portrait shot or hardly enough light for a group photo.

A constant light source is what you need and if you do not have a 3 point studio lighting kit handy, one of these portable LED light source is going to be better than your standard LED flash. These LED light boxes use up to 8 LEDs or more to produce daylight balanced lighting. 3. Tripods

5. Storage

For most Android smartphones, it is as simple as adding a MicroSD storage card to a a microSD card slot or free SIM slots that doubles as a storage expansion slot. What else is there to back up my photos on the move

The other option is to invest in a mobile hard drive or portable wireless hard drive. Laos PDR: Part II

Never ones to miss to a good bargain, we spent our last night in Luang Prabang checking prices at a dozen different travel agencies in search of the cheapest bus fare to Vang Vieng a river town 6-9 hours south of us (time range depends on type of bus, quality of driver, direction of wind, air in the tires, how often the driver stops to pee….really, any and every reason has come up before). Our Dutch friends from our hike in Northern Laos gave us a tip for a hole-in-the-wall place, and we successfully bought tickets for $2 less than every other operator in town.

We arranged to be picked up just outside our guest house at 6:30am and were told to be on the lookout for a silver passenger van. We were up, packed and out the door at 6:25am, only to realize that there was no way a big van could fit down our tiny alley. Maybe the van would be waiting for us on a main road near by? But which main road, since our guesthouse alley dumped out on either side of a main road? Camryn went left, I sped off to the right, and together we covered about 200 meters of road where this silver passenger van might pass.

6:30 turned to 6:45, to 7, to 7:15, to finally 7:30. Camryn and I had been pacing the road for a full hour, frantically waving at every silver van that passed by. Keep in mind… the Chinese New Year is still in full force, and the entire town Luang Prabang is crowded with Chinese tour groups driving in massive fleets of silver vans. We sure were a sight to behold -- two fully wired white people with big backpacks chasing down van after van after van, only to be completely ignored by the drivers.

At 7:30am, Camryn convinced a local shopkeeper to call our tour company and ask for a status update. Low and behold, not enough people had signed up for the early morning bus, and we weren’t going to be picked up until 9:30am. While we were frustrated that no one told us about the change… we also knew that it would have been impossible for them to let us know. We didn’t have SIM cards in Laos, and it’s not like we are Facebook friends with the bus operators. We bought some coffee, grabbed a pastry, and sat on the corner until our chariot arrived at 9:30am.

Of course, it didn’t actually arrive at 9:30. Or 9:45, or 10. Shortly after 10:15am, a silver van rolls by and Camryn and I once again performed our silver van dance. This time… it worked! Our van had finally arrived. Onwards to Vang Vieng.

Note about transportation in Laos: while distances may be short (Vang Vieng is only 220 km away from Luang Prabang), the roads are windy, hilly, full of potholes and dangerously skinny in width. At most, our van was rolling along at 40km/hour. The road between Luang Prabang and Vang Vieng, one of the main “highways” in Laos, is more reminiscent of a 4x4 fire road you would find in a U.S. National Forest. If you stretch the definition of pavement to include anything that even attempts to seal a road, you can call it sucesfully paved. As we travelled through the beautiful countryside, a thick smoke filled the air and almost blocked out the blue sky. Fires were spreading across the land, as the Hmong villages prepared for the wet season by slashing and burning their agricultural fields. The smell is quite pungent, but you get used to it after a while.

It’s common practice in SE Asia for bus drivers to stop along the way and pick up additional locals who are looking to go in our direction, assuming there are still open seats on the bus. Given the slow speed of transit, it’s quite easy for a local to stand on the roadside and flag down a driver. If the van is full it simply keeps driving past; however, if there are any openings, the driver quickly comes to a stop and discusses a price with the local. While we may pay $10 USD to go from A to B, locals getting picked up in this fashion may only pay $1-$2. The bus drivers never report these ‘additional passengers’ to their bosses, so all this becomes pocket money for the drivers. While drivers are not technically allowed to do this, and tour operators will advertise that their drivers don’t make these stops when you are booking tickets… it happens all of the time. Typically it’s no bother, as it only adds one minute per stop and there are usually open seats.

HOWEVER, on this particular journey, it got out of control. These additional local passengers, quickly outnumbering the western tourists paying full price for tickets, started doing their grocery shopping on our route! We must have stopped at 3-4 markets along the way, and waited (patience quickly vacating my body) while they picked the ripest papayas and mangos from streetside stalls. We stopped at a corner store so a passenger could pick up a big case of beer, and at one restaurant so a local could order food from the menu and wait for it to be packed up in a to-go container. We had easily added an extra 90 minutes to our journey when I came to my breaking point as we slowed down at another market. I piped up from the back of bus, quite loudly and full of frustration:

Driver! If you stop at this market, I will call your boss and tell him what you have been up to. I have his business card w/ email and phone number on it (this was a lie, I had no way to get in touch w/ anyone) and will happily tell him how you wasted over an hour of time time, and I’ll put it all over TripAdviser advising tourists to go with a different bus company. You have already made enough money from these people; they can do their shopping on their own time. I’m sure your boss won’t be happy to hear about this.”

At this point, all the locals turned to look at me, and even Cam wasn’t quite sure what to think about my frank conversation with the driver. Did he understand a word of what I was saying? Not sure, but he grumbled a few things, threw some nasty glances my way in the rearview mirror, and sped back up on the highway. Needless to say, we didn’t make any more unplanned stops. When we arrived in Vang Vieng, he pleaded w/ me not to contact his boss.

It is now 3pm and we’re exhausted, hot and both dealing with a bit of carsickness. One more hurdle to jump over before we can kick back and relax: where to sleep. We were unable to book lodging in Vang Vieng because (thanks, once again, Chinese New Year) the only listings left online were asking well over $100 USD per night, so we headed off on an epic journey through town to find a guesthouse. For context, it is mid 90 degrees outside and we have our big packs on our back and small packs on our front. Many guesthouses were full… a few were nasty… and one turned out to be right next door to a loud karaoke bar that only started playing music right after we had said yes to a room, checked in and laid down. We promptly returned the key and said NO THANK YOU. Always an adventure, right? 

Like everything always does, it all worked out in the end. We made it to Vang Vieng safely and eventually  we found a nice hotel in a good part of town with a queen sized comfy bed. We relied on each other for support (Cam was my rock that day; it was an emotional whirlwind for me, and I was totally spent and pretty much worthless by the end), and enjoyed long showers and some A/C before going to bed early.

We spent four days hiking in the hills, kayaking and tubing down the river, and relaxing in this gorgeous riverside town while peering out at the massive karst cliffs surrounding us.

And most importantly... we made friends! One afternoon while relaxing at a riverside restaurant called “Smile Bar,” we struck up a conversation with the couple in the canopy next to us. Garrett & Sarafina are from Scottsdale, Arizona, and also quit their jobs to travel throughout Morocco and SE Asia for six months. We bonded over music festivals, our favorite bands, quitting our jobs, and the trials and triumphs of life on the road… and quickly realized they were kindred spirits who would become lifelong friends and travel partners of ours.

These two are wonderful to be around and have added so much joy to our trip. Outgoing, spontaneous, kind, empathetic, spiritual, inquisitive… you name the positive quality, and they have it. To solidify the friendship even further… they are also keen to rise early in the morning and be in bed by 10pm. Our kind of people! As fate would have it, their rough itinerary for the next few months was nearly identical to ours, and we’ve now been travelling with them for almost a full month :).

From Vang Vieng we embarked on our first sleeper bus of the trip, with the final destination being Pakse. To our delight, Cam and I actually shared 1 bed (1 bed = 2 seats) so we were able to enjoy a nearly full night’s sleep. I can only imagine how awkward it would be to share a bed with a complete stranger, which would be the inevitable case if you chose to book only one seat.  The guy across the aisle from us drank four beers in the hour leading up to the bus ride, and then promptly took two valium (we know this because he proudly told the whole bus and then offered up any valium if anyone around us would like it). We passed on the valium. That gentleman… he slept through both bathroom stops, not moving a muscle or changing his position for the entire 12-hour ride. We shouldn’t be surprised after what he ingested, and we were happy to see he was alive by the end of it!

As you may recall from our India posts, we last saw our Dutch friends -- Hans and Isabelle -- in Pushkar and had made rough plans to “meet up somewhere in SE Asia at a later date.” We stayed in touch every week or so, checking calendars and discussing ideas for a rendezvous, and finally reunited in Pakse as they were nearing the very end of their trip! It was was so wonderful to see them again after nearly two months apart, and over a sub-par Indian dinner (pro tip: don’t try to eat Indian food in a small town in Laos after spending two months eating the real thing)... we caught up on their latest adventures in India and southern Thailand and ours in northern Thailand and Laos.

Now we had a gang of six… a biker gang of six to be precise. Pakse is the launching point for the Bolovan Plateau, an area of Laos that is best explored by motorbike. The six of us (Garrett, Sarafina, Hans, Isabelle, Cam and myself) left our big packs at a guesthouse and rode off into the Laos countryside on three motorbikes, with one small daypack per couple. We spent two days riding nearly 300km through the rolling hills, jumping off waterfalls along the way whenever possible.

The highlight of our time on the Boloven Plateau took place on our first night in the town of Tad Lo. Camryn had read online that a nearby resort owns two elephants and bathes them in the river every night at 5:30pm. It was an incredibly intimate and authentic experience… and we didn’t pay a dime. In Thailand you’d pay well over $100 to spend five minutes with an elephant, and you’d be questioning just how fairly they were being treated the entire time.

The elephant we took a liking to was named Moon. She was 65-years-old and was retired after spending 40 years as a working elephant in the Laos countryside in the logging industry, conquering feats of incredible strength seven days a week. During this time she was always treated with respect by her crew, fed well, and never abused. This resort in Tad Lo bought her five years ago, and has been allowing her to live out her remaining years in peace and tranquility. She no longer works; she simply “hangs out” with the resort guests and eats huge amounts of bananas and sugarcane for dinner each night. We spent nearly two hours with Moon and the owner, asking a million questions and getting up close and personal with her. We felt the strength of her jaws, put our hands inside the holes where her tusks would have been if she had them, looked into her big beautiful brown eyes and gave her more hugs than we can count. There were no chains and she wasn’t drugged like many animals are in these situations… she was simply a happy, retired elephant who allowed us to experience her majestic beauty to our heart’s desire. Thank you Moon. We won’t ever forget you.

That night, we feasted! The six of us (plus two additional friends -- Chido and Daisy -- who we met in Pakse and were also doing the motorbike loop) settled down for dinner at a local guesthouse that only had one menu available for the entire restaurant. We swapped travel stories well into the night while passing around bowls of noodles, papaya salads, fresh fruit and ice cream. Four local kids between the ages of 4-10 (who we assumed were the restaurant owner’s kids) joined us and took a liking to our cell phones. Not the least bit shy, they sat on our laps and took selfies, played games and giggled like crazy. When our food came out, they grabbed forks and started shoveling down our fried noodles as if they hadn’t eaten in days! We couldn’t be too upset as the portions were HUGE and these kids were adorable… but it got a little out of hand as they ended up eating more than we did.

We joked that the reason the restaurant owner made the portions so big was so the guests wouldn’t get mad when their kids ate half of our meal… but then to our surprise the kids’ actual mom came over from next door and called them home without saying a word to us! They didn’t actually belong to the restaurant owner, but they had successfully gotten a free and delicious dinner out of us that night.

Last on our list in Laos was the island of Don Det, which is located in an area of Southern Laos known as the 4,000 Islands. Don Det, the biggest of the islands, is without a doubt the chillest place we have been in Asia. A small dirt path runs around the island (5 mile circumference), and there are no cars or taxi’s. Here, our days were spent reading in the hammocks on the front porch of our bungalow, kayaking to smaller islands, eating green curry at the restaurant next door every single night for dinner (it was that good), and riding old rickety bicycles to the other side of the island for homemade ice cream.
