An institution in the States since the 1980s, Jeopardy! has never worked here. Sure, they've tried it - ITV spent most of the early 90s trying to make Jep happen - but it's never landed.
Maybe this new incarnation will hit the mark.
Stephen Fry is the host, and a longer running time allows him to take the game at a more sedate pace. A more conversational pace, it's questions and answers and just a bit of fun.
Jeopardy! has kept its conceit - we're shown the answers, and give a question beginning "(What|who) is..." Points for right questions, points off for wrong ones, and a final question to potentially double your score. Winner gets their score in pounds, which is usually around £5000.
Whisper (which is part-owned by Sony, which also owns Jeopardy!) have directly copied the Stateside version, all the music cues, all the little bits - including the cringeworthy opening announcement "From a studio you've never heard of in Salford!"
But this version of Jeopardy! works. Clever contestants, clever host, without anyone ever being smug or rubbing your nose in how much they know. It's the right show for 4pm on a dark winter's evening.
Ant and Dec has stated that if the contestants on tonight's Limitless Win won £1,250,000, they would become the biggest prize winners in UK game show history.
Keep in mind that this is a complete factual inaccuracy, as they also hosted the game show Red or Black, which aired in 2011 and 2012, and has been widely regarded as one of the worst game shows in UK history, and in 2012, the show gave away £1,500,000, which is the actual record for biggest prize win in UK game show history.
It's good knowing that they've forgotten about the show that the entire general public has also forgotten about.
EDIT: turns out i'm a big dumb stupid poo poo head and I didn't hear them say "most money given away on a quiz show". Red or Black is not a quiz show.
I don't know how much Masked Singer and Ant and Dec's Limitless Win fandom there is on here, but can I just say there has been some sheer bonkers hilarity going on this week. What with the staggering truth of who was actually in the potato suit on one hand, and the David Tennant Cake Incident on the other, it's been a ride.
UK prime time media lost a few sandwiches during the pandemic and never found them again. It's unhinged and I'm loving it.
I don't know if someone posted this a long time ago and that's why I know about it or it was cause I researched it myself but I haven't seen it around so I'm gonna post The Worlds Stinkiest Molecule
Jon & Lucy’s Odd Couples takes two celebrity couples, gives them a weekend at a spa, and asks them to do strange things. It’s all in the name of comedy and entertainment, so of course the anti-science woo of polygraphs «lie detectors» gets involved.
For a comedy show, it’s remarkably short on laughter. No chuckles, barely any wry smiles. Jon Richardson and Lucy Beaumont set the tone with gentle bickering throughout the programme, and it leaves us relieved it’s over.
The Traitors from NBC has finished on BBC3. It’s similar to the BBC1 show we loved last year, although with a less sympathetic host and contestants who have bought a massive sense of entitlement.
Worth a watch? Probably, though be aware that the first episode is not typical of the series.
Plus! Limitless Win, Pointless on other game shows, and House of Games at the football world cup.
