Social Media for your career
So I’ve been trying to make the effort to actually use social media to build my translation career. Particularly LinkedIn! I’ve actually managed to make some translation connections as opposed to just teaching ones and thought I would compile some tips on here that worked for me:
On LinkedIn:
- Search for translators in your language pair and reach out to them (I sent an invitation to connect with a few and then added a message explaining that I was new to the industry and looking for some tips) Generally translators seem willing to help
- Search for specific hashtags and follow them for updates, I follow some related to the area I live, some related to translation itself and some related to general job offers
-post content on there yourself; I’m trying to make the effort to post on there similar thoughts to the ones I post on here (Just with a little less waffle!)
On instagram:
- A translator I connected with (and who was kind enough to take time to set up a zoom chat to answer a few of my questions!) suggested a few hashtags to follow and I thought I would share them here: #t9n #xl8 #l10n #g11n #litranslators They all related to translation/localization/globalisation. So far i’ve seen some interesting posts and followed a few people (currently I’m only using my main personal account but if it proves useful then I may end up creating a separate business account)
On facebook:
- I’ve yet to really use facebook professionally but I am a member of the group for my MA translation and a few other translator groups. I’m still exploring this one
As for twitter I dont really understand it as a platform?? I have one myself but I never use it! Any suggestions would be welcome!

Words, Context and Meaning
#Globalization #Localization #Translation #Translators #Translator #Interpreting #Interpreters #Languages #Languageservices #MachineTranslation #Postediting #Linguists #litranslators
How many times have people ask you, "What does 'XYZ' in your language?"
You respond with "How was it used?"
You're asking for the context.
There is no such thing as a universal context that spans languages and cultures.
You could ask a Thai friend, "How do you say 'brother' in the Thai language." After all, the word "brother" lives in a universal context for you.
Your friend would then ask you, "Are you younger or older than your brother?"
WHAT?! Age has nothing to do with the word for "brother" -- Within your context, this question might seem discriminatory -- age discrimination!
In English, Spanish and countless other languages and cultures, age and relationships are separate and distinct.
Age, however, is critically important in the Thai context.
Speaking the Thai word for "brother" without modifying it with "older" or "younger" is a dead giveaway that you are not Thai. Furthermore, the absence of the age marker is disrespectful in the Thai culture. Ironically, the Thai culture also would be polite and not tell you that you're being disrespectful.
CONTEXT (culture, environment) + CONTENT (words, grammar, syntax) = MEANING
Meaning never exists without words AND context.
Homework
Read this sentence. Does it generate feelings like "this isn't right" or "something's wrong"?
The bird swam across the bay.
The words, syntax and grammar are perfect. Punctuation is correct. Capitalization? that's right, too.
So, why do you still feel something's wrong? Well, you might be inclined to fix this way, "The bird flew across the bay." To do so would wrongly change the meaning.
Assignment: Without changing a word, change how can you change your feelings to "Oh, that's right!"
Hint: You must change your context, not the content (words), and YOU generated the context when you read the sentence.
