A lot of tension starts out from them being frustrated at each other

Johnny is kind of smitten anyway, he respects Liu Kang’s mission and skills, even if he thinks he’s a bit of a dick sometimes

Liu thinks Johnny is an asshole and doesn’t really have much of a larger image of him beyond their first interaction for most of the tournament

Johnny beating Goro does change some of that, but Liu still doesn’t really get what he’s feeling is attraction. Or he doesn’t want to. I think movie Liu strikes me as a guy who represses his sexuality somewhat and would be too focused on revenge to realize he finds a guy hot

There’s a lot of almost moments during training, both before and after the tournament and defeating Shang Tsung

Wrestling each other down in the heat of afternoon, Liu pinning Johnny down by the throat, or Johnny bracketing Liu’s thighs with his own

Similar moments during arguments, Liu tugging Johnny close to get in his face only for his thoughts to snag on the warmth of his breath and the way his eyes flick down

He doesn’t want to recognize it. He doesn’t

Johnny’s absolutely smitten though, and definitely gets himself off in his private time after some more charged encounters

Liu Kang is just pretty and when he’s mad he fucking snarls and his jaw flexes, and his arms gleam with sweat after every practice and fuck

Johnny ends up taking point on making something happen. He’s more casual with sex, and sees it as a logical conclusion to everything bubbling between them, to stop dancing around it

The next time Liu picks a fight he doesn’t back down, Caging(™️) him against a wall and letting him know exactly what they’ve both been thinking

Johnny’s a neck kisser, and gets Liu into it slowly

He buries himself in that hair, feels up his sides, feels Liu tensing and relaxing and hears the slightly confused hitches in his breath

hello llewayinghorses. yeah i have ummmm a lot lmao. for the purposes of this i'll be stretching the definition of rare pair a Little because while sure some of these have like over a hundred fics it still feels p small To Me. anywayd

biliang is one of them, as well as kuaitomas. both of these are mk1 btw. sorry beloved followers i am a scorpsmoke lover blame Do you feel it travel in and out your heart? on ao3 (i was shipping them way before i read that fic it's just my favourite). and a biliang lover but i've already mentioned that one before on here.

haven't been Incredibly into those lately though cuz the liu kang hyperfixation hit like a train and now all i can do is set him up with other people he can fuck nasty (or not fuck at all i do love an ace liu kang. more like liu king. sorry.) but they are still on the backburner.

ignore the fact that the colour doesn't mean anything Anyways liutana and liulao aren't rare, shangliu is actually surprisingly popular considering it has so few fics (like 50 total i think split between the liu vs fire god liu tags?), liuhan probably is considered rare but idk maybe it's just because i'm in my part of the fandom but i see it p often so probably not very rare. kuailiu and liutomas are both rarer than that. railiu is p rare, i don't really see it often (but i'd love to because it's actually such a good pairing it's so cool oh my god) uhhhh liugeras is pretty rare considering how much sense it makes but i get it w/e yk. uhhhh kenliu and liucage are both p rare. especially cuz i ship liucage the hardest in the 1995 mortal kombat movie (so sad that i can't write for that movie. cries) which already doesn't get much fandom activity. oh baraka and liu is like super rare lmao but they're so cool !! i think there's lots of potential there idk maybe i'm just a freak. i do mostly ship them in mk11 though (mostly just cuz i don't want to deal with contagion lmao). sindel and liu are rare i suppose (also i forgot to mark liu and jerrod but i do ship them as well they're a throuple) as are liu and syzoth but i don't really care for them Much they're just fun sometimes but they aren't on the brainrot list. quan chi and liu are also rare but yk same principle as syliu i don't care all that much. i just like them both and i think they could have Something. evil. also liu and mileena is mk11 specific and it's also complicated but the sad thing is there's no fic for them and i'm too scared to write it (that's a lie i'm just not creative enough)

uhhhhh i also ship kenleena which according to twitter is actually popular but i've not seen it a damn time which SUCKS !!!! guys please i love taleena but why should i care for Them in mk1 when i could be shipping mileena and the guy whose eyes she gouged out. i think that slays. taleena is also a slay ofc but in mk1........ i need something with a little more Spice like they had in mkx. give me toxic yuri or give me death. they need to be treacherous and then have a kid or i'm out.

again shangliu is p popular shockingly however mk11 shangliu is a lot less popular. sonya/liu is actually so rare that i made the ao3 tag and i'm one of like. four shippers lmao. but i mostly ship them in conjunction with liucage in mk11 and only really ship them on their own in mk21. liu/jax is similar in the sense that i like them more in the 2021 movie lmao. and again i'm the only one in the tag. mk11 liuhan is less common than mk1 which is sad because they're iconic. again baraka and liu are always rare, railiu is p rare (though it does have some absolute masterpieces in the ao3 tag. ty melochromatic can we please be friends you're so cool). fujin/liu is also uncommon but i love them so sosososis99ssjowehhrishwkshrkebf much (i just like both of the characters and decided to slam them together for my amusement) blahblah again with mileena and geras and liulao and liutana are both popular.

SIGH. in addition to all of these i have some bonuses like sindel/sheeva and jadetana which might not be Rare but it is lovely and frossie which definitely Is rare (heartbreakingly) and probably more that i don't want to list. GASP FOR AIR.

He knew what it looked like when gossip made the rounds, looking for a new victim to pluck secrets from to spread far and wide. Despite his rather... antagonistic relationship with the actor, pulling pigtails as the more crude of the duo would say- He respected Johnny immensely. Never would he do him the disservice of sharing with the world what was between them, and them alone.

Not that I need to explain myself (I’m wildly self-indulgent when it comes to my kontent, I know this). But I bet some of you souls out there are wondering about the Johnny Cage/Liu Kang shipping posts that occasionally pop up on this blog. You might even find yourselves asking “Canonliukang, what could possibly be the appeal?”

Well, it goes like this:

A lot of it has to do with their chemistry in the 1995 movie. My friend over @thunderdilf and I noticed that these two get more scenes together than most pairs in the movie, even Sonya. Hell, they spend the last quarter of the movie navigating Outworld together to save the gal. They’ve got a decent amount of scenes together where the crux of the interaction is either cheeky antagonism (I swear, Liu goes out of his way to pull Johnny’s leg), or a surprising amount of sincerity from what we know to be a stuck-up actor in the way that he handles Liu after Reptile shoots his shot into the guy’s eyes. There’s lots of ribbing, but also a strange friendship that can be interpreted from the solidarity of entering the island, this tournament for the fate of the world with a sellfish motivation and coming out of it with a more altruistic one. Finding something to fight for and having it be to keep each other alive, if you will. 

Where the shipping comes in (MK 1995): You take two guys. One of ‘em is a hotshot actor with more skill than he lets on (though you’d hardly think that’s the case with how he carries on). Then you pair him in say, a buddy-comedy duo situation with a (former) Monk tasked with the safety and security of Earthrealm. Two completely different cultures and mindsets, but between that the two of them both try to live up to what can be interpreted as some pretty strict standards for how they act and the image they cultivate. Something of a microscope, both inter and intrapersonal enforced this standard and made it so that the two of them weren’t necessarily free to... Be. Johnny wants to prove that he’s not a fake, that he’s the real deal, he is good enough. Liu Kang wants revenge yet struggles to face the root of his problem: He failed in his duty. Chan took over for something that was his responsibility. He wasn’t good enough. There’s room to bond over the impact that these kinds of upbringings and external pressures have on a person, and plenty more to flirtatiously antagonize each other because what’s a relationship between two bro pals without friendly ribbing? Not to mention the in-jokes, can you imagine?  “jeez I’m thirsty, could sure go for some of that life-bringing element”, “I really admire your mind, Liu.” and “I am STILL amazed at how you were able to get away with dropping into splits mid-battle like that.” 

Where the shipping comes in (NRS/Midway Timeline, because why not): Imagine being that monk. Being a little jealous of how free this man is. That boundless energy and exuberance past the border of obnoxiousness, no qualms about anything he does. A lack of inhibition to your extreme inhibition, and this is not knowing that he envies you because you're able to vocalize your fears and doubts and not be diminished by them. You find yourselves kindred spirits with time, if such a thing is allowed for you both. It’s the idea of seeing someone and the parts of them that beg knowing, because very few people do that. Know. 

Pair with Johnny’s touchy tendencies, the word ‘angorny’ entering Liu Kang’s lexicon upon witnessing the sheer audacity of tattooing one’s name on their own body, and a whole lot of energy that accompanies being two reckless and talented men in the prime of their lives, fighting for a tomorrow that’s not guaranteed and you’ve got heat of the caged variety, baby. Out here drippin in finesse... It don’t make no sense.
