🐝World Bee Day🐝 did you know there is over 20,000 bee (Apis.) species?! _ Becoming a beekeeper has been such an amazing opportunity and challenge. It really feels like beekeeping and the bees found me, and I'm glad they did. Working with them is incredible, and I'm thankful that we have saved 10 hives now! The last 7 months have been intense and the learning curb steep, but thanks to @beefreeapiary and @ufhoneybeelab I have a great foundation and network of specialist for guidance. _ Here's my write up for bee college: My experience in attending UF Bee College was incredible. As a recently certified beekeeper, I felt Bee College would provide expertise and continue my education of apiculture. I enjoyed engaging with fellow beekeepers from around the state and discussing different management options and style. I found it most helpful to be able to connect with extension agents, industry leaders, and researchers to discuss best practices and principles. It was essential to hear the up and coming research for insights into the future beekeeping. -🌸🌻🌺 -Even if you're not a beekeeper, you can still do your part by planting flowers and provide habit for all pollinators. My first rescue of 2020, and it was one massive hive!✨ The owners speculate at least two years or more, judging by the amount of comb alone I'd agree - oh and the roughly ~30,000 bees!🐝🐝🐝 The colony was located between two fences under a sheet of vinyl plywood. Thankfully, it was a smooth rescue. All of the brood comb was saved, filling up ten frames! I was also able to find the Queen👸🐝 With the remaining comb - mostly nectar, pollen, and bee-bread - I like to leave for them to clean, if I can, before rendering the wax. What a washout! This rescue and removal went flawlessly until we got hit by a nice storm last night. ⛈ Luckily at that point we had all the comb in the two NUCs and 99% of the bees in the vacuum box. Wet bees are not happy bees, and when I got them home they made sure I knew. A sting a day keeps the doctor away right? 🐝 They've settled in now, and I'm looking forward to bringing them to the apiary tomorrow 🐝 _ Shout out to @miasteamed for backing me up and the 📸 photos, and to @stelaskitchen for calling us to save them! 🙌🏼 The parking lot owners were about to spray them. Another great rescue and removal 🐝 this hive was about two years old inside the walls of a shed. The ladies filled up ten frames! Found a few sealed queen cups so they must have swarmed recently or had been preparing. Made sure each NUC box had at least one 👸 cup, so hopefully this will be nice split for two hives. Throwback ~ to last month when this removal really tested our skills. In all, it took about 4 days. Honey was dripping all over us🍯the girls didn't take to the NUCs at first, and so we brought in the vacuum. It was so much fun and the setting pure bliss🌺 The hive must have been 2+ years old, see how dark the comb is?! These girls filled up 10 frames of mostly honey and pollen, there was a lot more comb but no brood or queen meaning they must have swarmed recently, but there were still loads of bees! We used two vacuum boxes and a NUC.
