Field journal 馃摂
ID: Halictidae family (unsure of genus or species)
Common name: Sweat bee (named because on hot days, they seek out sweaty humans to lap up their sweat鈥攚hich contains salt and proteins鈥攚hich they will then save for their young.)
馃挌馃悵
Since I couldn鈥檛 narrow down this bee鈥檚 ID very far (there are 60 species of sweat bee in FL alone), I can鈥檛 tell you much about the species pictured, but I *can* tell you some fun new vocab words I learned while reading about this diverse family of insects.聽
馃挌馃悵
In the past, I have heard animal species referred to as specialist or generalist species in reference to how picky they are in what they eat, but in pollination ecology, the following terms can be used.
馃挌馃悵
Polylectic: this refers to insects that gather pollen from a variety of unrelated flowering plants.
Oligolectic: this refers to insects that only pollinate a single family or genus of flowering plants.
馃挌馃悵
(Most sweat bee species are polylectic, but there are some that are oligolectic!)
馃摳 I believe the plant pictured is Genus Seymeria / blacksenna.

Triepeolus concavus: 聽Svastra Home Invader. 聽Triepeolus are a primarily New World group and lay their eggs mostly, but not entirely, in the nests of long-horned bees (Eucerini), mostly Melissodes. 聽Interestingly (to me), I can't find any records of them parasitizing Eucera (in the strictly old fashioned sense) but if you google around you will see mentions on websites that they do. 聽 I feel like these websites are incorrect, so someone please correct me if I am wrong. 聽 Eucera are a spring long-horn and maybe Triepeolus just don't do spring (I certainly know of no spring records). 聽In any case the species at hand invades the hulking long-horn group of Svastra, not Melissodes. 聽Consequently, they are a bit larger than most Triepeolus (as if anyone cared). 聽This bee was collected in the California Central Valley in Yolo County for research on small-scale restoration in agricultural areas. Claire Kremen's 10-year study of hedgerows shows the benefits of planting native shrubs and forbs in agricultural areas for native bees. Photo by Erick Hernandez. 聽

Common Eastern Bumblebee (Bombus impatiens) in Pinery Provincial Park, May 2017. Bumblebee queens spend the winter in sheltered locations and emerge in mid-April or early May to begin new colonies. They build these nests underground, usually in abandoned Chipmunk or Mouse burrows. Unlike Honeybees which have a rigid nest structure, Bumblebees lay their eggs throughout the underground chamber in clumps. . . . . . . . #nature #ontario #bumblebee #bombus #bombusimpatiens #bumblebeesofinstagram #bumblebeephotography #bees馃悵 #nativebees #ontariobees #beesofinstagram #socialinsects #insect_of_our_world #insectlover #pineryprovincialpark #pinerypp #nature_addict (at Pinery Provincial Park, Grand Bend) https://www.instagram.com/p/COiIfJIga6g/?igshid=1x00xvjr169h8

A new snapshot from https://sagesacre.com/2021/04/05/the-bee-hotel-has-occupants/
The Bee Hotel Has Occupants
The bee hotel I built last year
Last year I built a bee hotel in the hope of providing housing for some of our native bees. It looks like it worked because I can now see at least four little mud covered holes in the logs I placed in the hotel, which tells me I鈥檝e got some mason bees in residence.
Closeup of a mason bee鈥檚 nest in the bee hotel
I鈥檓 not sure how to tell whether I have carpenter bees (the big black ones) hanging out because, other than knowing they nest by burrowing into rotting wood, I have no idea what I鈥檓 looking for. I did see a few buzzing about the hotel last fall, so I鈥檓 hoping that at least one or two found Le Hotel de Sage suitable.
Outside of the few solitary bees, the hotel is also home to plenty of spiders, a mud wasp, and various other wood and hole dwelling insects.
For info on how I built my hotel and the bees native to California, check out my post from last August.

Look at this beautiful boy! I had no idea about this, but it turns out that #XylocopaSonorina/#ValleyCarpenterBee are sexually dimorphic. The females are black and shiny and cool-looking while the males are these adorable blond teddybears with handsome green eyes. I thought he was a totally different kind of bee or something! The males also don鈥檛 have a stinger. These bees are mostly solitary and like the name suggests, they carve out nests in dead wood. Photos 6 & 7 are of a female bee I saw about a week ago. The lighting wasn鈥檛 as good & she was in a hurry, but you can see how different they look. Both bees were feeding on #CaliforniaNativePlants. #SalviaClevelandii/#ClevelandSage for the male bee & the female was on #KeckiellaCordifolia/#HeartleafKeckiella. #solitarybees #nativebees #pollinators #savethebees #carpenterbee #xylocopa #californiainsects (at Jamul, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/CBRuPjLDorg/?igshid=sjxaa8bmfg9a

A weed that irritates everyone, thorny, leaves are shot through with holes from being fed on by many of its personal insect hosts, but...this is a native plant, related to tomatoes and T'ai Roulston's work in Shenandoah Valley shows that for some bumblebees this is the main pollen source in the summer. 聽So, inspect you preconceived notions and maybe let a few horse nettles (Solanum carolinense) bloom in the back of your garden. 聽Don't be a flower snob. 聽Specimen and picture by Helen Lowe Metzman, Howard County, MD. 聽 聽#horsenettle #flowersnob #nativeplant #pollinatorplant #pollination #bumblebees #flowers #usgs #bees #nativebees #conservation #ugly #forlorn #ignored

G鈥橫orning! Hope you are able to take it easy today. Here are a few native bees collecting pollen and nectar on some of the sunflowers in our yard. Did you know we have several thousand types of native bees in North America? Most of which live in the ground! Our honey bees are actually originally from Europe and considered livestock ( though some do escape to become feral colonies living in hollow trees馃尦 or other structures like wall cavities 馃槵). Bees need both pollen (protein) and nectar (carbs). The nectar they collect from flowers is dehydrated by fanning their wings to form the honey we eat. - 馃摳Guest post by @karlyfae and @bender_bryan of @chesapeakequeenco . . . . #northeastbaltimore #lifeissweetinthenortheast #visitbaltimore #baltimoremaryland #baltimoremd #thisisbaltimore #baltimorelove #iheartbaltimore #baltimoregram #bestofbaltimore #mybmore #wearebaltimore #wontyoubemyneighbor #beekeeperslife #beekeeping #nativebees #sunflowers (at Northeast Baltimore, Baltimore) https://www.instagram.com/p/CE1sjaNptUL/?igshid=1eb1j9n8xafdj
