Little rescue this morning inside an owl🦉 box in the garden. This was a recent swarm, see look at the comb it's so fresh and delicate. All of it was saved; they only had one frame's worth😢💚 and were just starting to pack in pollen. We didn't find the Queen but made sure to give them a frame of eggs and brood just in case. My first rescue of 2020, and it was one massive hive!✨ The owners speculate at least two years or more, judging by the amount of comb alone I'd agree - oh and the roughly ~30,000 bees!🐝🐝🐝 The colony was located between two fences under a sheet of vinyl plywood. Thankfully, it was a smooth rescue. All of the brood comb was saved, filling up ten frames! I was also able to find the Queen👸🐝 With the remaining comb - mostly nectar, pollen, and bee-bread - I like to leave for them to clean, if I can, before rendering the wax. So I've been wanting to try this method and was reinspired by @thesurvivalgardener - where you upcycle a section of the main stem from banana or plantain plants by cutting a hole and transplanting a start or if you can, find a volunteer 🌱 _ If you're big into gardening, I highly recommend a Hori Hori (the knife looking tool behind the tomato plant in the first picture). Its a Japanese trowel or digging tool. I most enjoy that it has so many other uses with a blade on one side, serrated teeth on the other, and a measuring guide. Ever-bearing Mulberries (Morus rubra), as some have said, these are overlooked fruits that grow incredibly easy and can have a small footprint too. Late post, but Sunset with the Bees and the apiary beautification project was a success! The @soflobees Volunteers and garden guest hand-painted sings for phase one of our "Stop for Pollinators" installation. It was a great event, and the team did fantastically. Following up on just shy of a year ago when we helped set up a native pollinator garden and tropical food forest. We assessed the plants, did some light pruning and fertilizing. I'm happy to say a fair amount survived, but some also perished. So now we're planning the anniversary to replant, get an arborist to trim the canopy in preparation for hurricane season, and conduct workshops on basic horticulture so the staff and residents can tend to the plants and harvest quality fruits. The guava had fruit, and bananas are about to bloom!
