St Teilo’s Day
Tumblr media
St Teilo. Source: Orthodox Christianity website
Today is St Teilo’s Day. Teilo was a fifth century Welsh monk and bishop, possibly of royal descent, who became a leading figure in Welsh monasticism and also the Bishop of Llandaff, near Cardiff. He was particularly venerated in the Celtic areas of Britain that held out against the Anglo-Saxon invaders, and his cult therefore naturally extended to Britanny. A rather gruesome cure became associated with this Welsh saint. Apparently if one was afflicted with whooping cough, a cure could be obtained by drinking from Teilo’s holy well at Maenclochog in Dyfed. The only drawback to this was the curative waters had to be quaffed from Teilo’s hollowed out skull, or the cure would not work. To complicate matters, Teilo apparently had three skulls - located at Llandaf, his birthplace in Penally, and the place of his death, Llandeilo Fawr in Dyfed. This was explained by God wishing all three sites to have a (literal) piece of Teilo, so he effectively cloned the deceased saint’s head twice. The skull generally held to be the real thing now resides in Llandaff Cathedral, and no one attempts to drink from it.
It is hard to see this strange tradition having anything other than Celtic pagan roots, given the importance of heads to Druidic religion, and the belief that the skull had magical properties.

Chrissakes...
@djchezzychez ‘S your choice how to feed and what to eat, kid. Don’t eat chicken nuggets, that’ll mess your stomach up something bad, but beyond that, folk can yap all they want. It’s your choice at the end of the day, don’t have to listen, and don’t have to argue about it. Won’t change anyone’s mind, might as well do what you will and let all that die out til tongues stop wagging.
@fallen--leafs Don’t drink fucking vampire blood. It’ll bind you to them, and that’s one hell of a thing to get over. Don’t risk it ‘less you know for sure they’ll be dead after. And draining one dry... it leaves some sort of trail on you, a mark. Others of your kind don’t take kindly to that.

Happy All Saints' Day to people who we are told received the spiritual espousals; hermits who live with their mothers; name saints of Llandaff cathedral who were never "bishop of Llandaff"; objects of a great and universal popular veneration; remarkable examples of the Christian type of complete "other-worldliness" united with the most capable "practicality"; entirely mythical personages round whom centre some of the most obviously false and preposterous of pseudo-pious romances; sisters who were probably martyred in Italy; people whose brothers try to get them released on the ground that they are out of their minds but who show clearly that they are not and suffer with the rest; young women of Parma who narrowly escape being tried for sorcery; some of the greatest, most attractive, and most widely appreciated women whom the world has ever known; official shorthand-writers; people who have had some very strange experiences, and periodically recurring stigmata, and are often in a state of ecstasy; people killed by the Danes while exhorting them to behave themselves; people who are learned, benevolent, and surpassingly good, beloved by old and young, rich and poor; and people who are quite illiterate but so endowed with wisdom that they are often consulted by educated men.

Went to Llandaff Cathedral last night to hear Holst's The Planets suite. I know it's super white bread, but hot damnnnnnnnnnnnnn if this part of Jupiter ain't THE fucking shit. The acoustics weren't as impactful as I was imagining but I was stuck off to the side a bit. Still got some good sound moments tho. This clip above was a physical pleasure to hear thank youuuuu Also gave me a new appreciation of Saturn.

On 2 January 1941 – World War II: The Cardiff Blitz.
Over 100 bombers attacked the city over a 10-hour period beginning at 6.37 pm on the night of 2 January 1941. Dropping high explosive bombs, incendiary bombs & parachute mines, the Riverside area was the first to be bombed. In Grangetown, the Hollyman Brothers bakery was hit by a parachute mine & 32 people who were using the basement as a shelter were killed.
When the raid was over 165 people had been killed & 427 more injured, while nearly 350 homes were destroyed or had to be demolished.
Chapels & the nave of Llandaff Cathedral were also damaged. Western Cardiff was the worst hit area, particularly Canton & Riverside, where 116 people were killed, an estimated 50 of which were killed in one street in Riverside, De Burgh Street.
The Cardiff Blitz (Welsh: Blitz Caerdydd); refers to the bombing of Cardiff, Wales during World War II. Between 1940 & the final raid on the city in March 1944 approximately 2,100 bombs fell, killing 355 people.
Cardiff Docks became a strategic bombing target for German Luftwaffe (the Nazi German air force) as it was one of the biggest coal ports in the world. Consequently, it & the surrounding area were heavily bombed. Llandaff Cathedral, amongst many other civilian buildings caught in the raids, was damaged by the bombing in 1941.

A Walk Along the Taff River & Llandaff Cathedral - Cardiff, Wales
Tumblr media
Today we had a lovely 8+-mile walk along the Taff River. We meandered along, taking in sports fields and ruins as we walked.
Tumblr media
Training facility for the national cricket team.

Ruins from Bishop's Palace - pictured above and below.

Our next destination, Llandaff Cathedral's spire, peeking over the walls of Bishop's Palace.

Llandaff Cathedral - pictured above and below.
Tumblr media
We loved the entry to the cathedral, the steps led down into the building - all the other cathedrals we have been in are raised up and you have to go up steps to enter them.
Tumblr media
The interior of this cathedral was massive and it contained a large number of artifacts:

The beautiful wooden door at the entrance.

The choir section and the organ.

One of the artifacts inside of the cathedral.

A panel from the Bishop of Llandaff's throne, dated 1478-1496.

Several of the multiple tombs that are located inside of the cathedral, pictured above and below.

After visiting the cathedral, we walked up Dean's Steps to the hill overlooking the cathedral where there are several memorials:
Tumblr media
These are the ruins of the Bell Tower, that were restored by pulling down the Tower House, which was the Red Lion Inn, it is now kept as a green space and the Llandaff War Memorial.
Tumblr media
This sculpture is also a part of the Llandaff War Memorial.
From there we continued our walk along the Taff River, crossing over a bridge and heading back toward our Airbnb.
Tumblr media
The Black Weir on the River Taff.
Tumblr media
Quite a relaxing, beautiful walkway - a nice break from the city scene!
Tumblr media
Perfect ending to our stay in Cardiff.
