Madame de T.’s salon was all that Marius Pontmercy knew of the world. It was the only opening through which he could get a glimpse of life. This opening was sombre, and more cold than warmth, more night than day, came to him through this skylight. This child, who had been all joy and light on entering this strange world, soon became melancholy, and, what is still more contrary to his age, grave. Surrounded by all those singular and imposing personages, he gazed about him with serious amazement. Everything conspired to increase this astonishment in him. There were in Madame de T.’s salon some very noble ladies named Mathan, Noé, Lévis,—which was pronounced Lévi,—Cambis, pronounced Cambyse. These antique visages and these Biblical names mingled in the child’s mind with the Old Testament which he was learning by heart, and when they were all there, seated in a circle around a dying fire, sparely lighted by a lamp shaded with green, with their severe profiles, their gray or white hair, their long gowns of another age, whose lugubrious colors could not be distinguished, dropping, at rare intervals, words which were both majestic and severe, little Marius stared at them with frightened eyes, in the conviction that he beheld not women, but patriarchs and magi, not real beings, but phantoms.

The light imagery in this chapter is fascinating:
“These antique visages and these Biblical names mingled in the child’s mind with the Old Testament which he was learning by heart, and when they were all there, seated in a circle around a dying fire, sparely lighted by a lamp shaded with green, with their severe profiles, their gray or white hair, their long gowns of another age, whose lugubrious colors could not be distinguished, dropping, at rare intervals, words which were both majestic and severe, little Marius stared at them with frightened eyes, in the conviction that he beheld not women, but patriarchs and magi, not real beings, but phantoms.”
Light often represents progress in this novel, so it’s not surprising that the conservative royalist salon is shrouded in shadow. The “dying fire” points both to their dim, limited vision of the world and the fact that their ideology (in Hugo’s view, as his idea of progress is linear) is dying out. With the exception of Marius, everyone at this salon is elderly (”their gray or white hair” points to this) and dressed in “gowns of another age.” They’re out of touch with fashion and politics, but Marius - who has only seen shadows - doesn’t know that.
The idea that they’re “phantoms” further stresses their connections to a past period, as if they were ghosts from the ancien régime. However, that supernatural tie also adds in Marius’ fear and respect for them. Fearing phantoms isn’t surprising, nor is listening to them out of that fear when they appear. 
Marius himself, however, is full of light because he’s a child, making him an almost contradictory blend of brightness (his youth) and darkness (his politics, learned from Gillenormand). In many ways, he’s similar to the time period of some of these salons:
“Nothing in history resembles that quarter of an hour which begins in 1814 and terminates about 1820, with the advent of M. de Villèle, the practical man of the Right. These six years were an extraordinary moment; at one and the same time brilliant and gloomy, smiling and sombre, illuminated as by the radiance of dawn and entirely covered, at the same time, with the shadows of the great catastrophes which still filled the horizon and were slowly sinking into the past.”
Gillenormand’s influence is a “shadow” on Marius, who himself becomes gloomy and “severe” because of his upbringing. At the same time, he may maintain some “light” because he has the potential to change, just as France did.
The ideas on teaching presented here are intriguing as well. Marius’ education makes him a “pedant,” but we’re not given much detail besides the fact that it’s classical and that he then goes to law school. We also know that he was made to learn the Old Testament “by heart,” and while religious education may have been distinct from his studies, combined with the use of “pedant,” it implies that all of his studies focused on memorizing and reciting what was told to him (just as he repeats Gillenormand’s political opinions). His perspectives, then, may not have been challenged in his studies, either. Ironically, the “ultra” attitude of the salon may have been the best argument against royalism, but Marius is ill-prepared to think about that.
Also! A brief note on the galleys:
“M. de Port-de-Guy, bald, and rather aged than old, was wont to relate that in 1793, at the age of sixteen, he had been put in the galleys as refractory and chained with an octogenarian, the Bishop of Mirepoix, also refractory, but as a priest, while he was so in the capacity of a soldier. This was at Toulon. Their business was to go at night and gather up on the scaffold the heads and bodies of the persons who had been guillotined during the day; they bore away on their backs these dripping corpses, and their red galley-slave blouses had a clot of blood at the back of the neck, which was dry in the morning and wet at night. These tragic tales abounded in Madame de T.’s salon, and by dint of cursing Marat, they applauded Trestaillon.”
Although this story was told with the intention of cursing the French Revolution, it also speaks to its failure to truly change the criminal justice system. Perhaps aristocrats and bishops hadn’t been the targets of the monarchy, but the galleys were unjust regardless of who they were punishing. The guillotine, in a similar vein, is horrific regardless of who it targets; the detail is difficult to find in this large block paragraph, but the details about the blood do make it stand out a bit more, showing both how these stories could have affected Marius as a child (this is pretty gruesome and would easily make him hate and fear enemies of royalism) and the genuine violence of the Revolution and the systems it left in place.

@everyonewasabird, as usual, has good things to say about this chapter :
Oof, the description of the Doctrinaires. I don’t know how accurate Hugo’s characterization of them is, but the way he describes them trying to make all the disparate political factions of French history embrace each other and get along prematurely feels unsettlingly like the “history is over, we’ve solved it” politics I grew up around. We’ve been talking in the Discord lately about how modern scholars try to depoliticize this book because it’s currently fashionable in literary thought to think of art as apolitical.
I really appreciate Hugo taking a moment to call bullshit on that.
Another living tomb, filled with eighteenth-century spectres that refuse to die. Unlike in the convent, most of the people mentioned in this chapter are real, and Hugo would have met most of them.
There’s some very good and very incisive language in this chapter--the bit about being ultra being to find fault with the bonfire for undercooking the heretic being maybe the best-known, but I also love the line about the Doctrinaires “criticizing and defending monarchism, which was unhappy at being criticized and furious at being defended.” And his description of the returned emigrés is especially poignant, coming from someone who doesn’t know if he’ll ever be allowed to return.
The story of M. Port-de-Guy jumped out on this reading--the man who, as a 16-year-old soldier, had been sent to the prison hulks (!) in Toulon (!!) for refusing to swear allegiance to the Republic, shackled to a non-juring octogenarian bishop (!!!) and assigned to carrying away the bodies from the scaffold of the guillotine (!!!!).
It’s almost the only glimpse we get of the popular image of the Terror as a uniquely vicious moment--and it’s genuinely distressing and shocking, and meant to be. But this is what follows it:
“There were many such tragic tales in Madame de T’s salon, where cursing Marat meant applauding Trestaillon.”
We never hear any of those other tales--and the other complaints we hear about the Revolution or the age it ushered in are all trivial, and explicitly connected to the ultras mourning their lost youth and relevance. But Trestaillon is a name for a Royalist thug of the White Terror--implying that, if there are other grisly stories, they’re as likely to be about the violence the tellers have perpetrated, not what they’ve suffered.

Retroblogging 3.2.1- 3.2.6
Okay I loathe Gillenormand almost beyond the power of speech so I'm gonna try to quick-trot through these chapters so I can get back to...the older sections I also didn't manage to keep up with.  And be ready for tomorrow, yay!
3.2.1
OF COURSE the people in Gillenormand's old neighborhood still speak and think kindly of him. To the public eye he must have been such an amusing personage-- kind of eccentric, but generous and funny, and so responsible about his grandson and everything. OF COURSE. Ugh.
He's using the idea of his impoverishment to avoid admitting his age, and in the process he gets to blame his wives for his current potential undesirability to young women instead of having to accept that he's, you know, maybe just not attractive to young women.  That's pretty standard for him, I think; never accept any limitation or fault when you can blame it on someone else! Way to go, Gillenormand!
...Ugh I hate him already.
Somewhat happier note: All the street named bearing the names of capitals of  Europe.  Hugo claims this as progress, and I don't even think he's being sarcastic; a vision of Europe as a close-knit neighborhood  would of course have seemed inspiring to him. It must have seemed like such a wild dream at the time. Awww, Hugo. Sometimes I kind of like you even in the Gillenormand chapters.

Leaving aside that Gillenormand is 'affectionate when he wanted to be' which is...not ...that's not...ARGH
...Is his room literally decorated in fabric made by the forced labor of galley convicts?? YELLOW PAPER made by galley convicts ( to amuse the aristocracy)?!? Criminy. Valjean really never had a chance in this household, did he?

Gillenormand doesn't think men like him belong in government. Well, it's for totally opposed reasons, but in this one case I AGREE WITH HIM, ugh.  Because-- well, that's coming up.
3.2.4
This bit with him thinking the partition of Poland is totally justified by the purchase of scam medicine had me actually llooking through all of 3.2 to see if Gillenormand was just systematically being opposed to everything the Amis care about. And: no, but only not systematically. Ugh.
3.2.5
And THIS is the bit that's really highlighting why Gillenormand doesn't belong in the government; he doesn't want to leave any sort of legacy. He's upset about the idea of his money, even after his death, going to benefit his country; he's not at all thinking about the next generation.
Also: in a book so concerned with names, who gives them and what they mean and how people use them, the fact that he straight up buys his servants' identities off them gives me the absolute whimwhams.  People are a household expense to him, that's all,  and why should he care what they call themselves? Here's a raise, give me your identity, there, now we're good.  It's not like the servants can't go elsewhere; they're probably just as happy with the deal; but it says a lot about him regardless that this is something he WANTS, for his servants to be essentially nameless and interchangeable. 
(I think Mlle. Gillenormand and Marius show echoes of this too, later, but that's another chapter. I blame Gillenormand entirely.)
3.2.6
“sorrow translated to anger” with Gillenormand. Yeah, I think that's a pretty common emotional alchemy, and I don't especially mind it. But the question then is what he does with his anger.
For all I despise Gillenormand--- and I really really do-- he is STILL a more responsible figure than Tholomyes re: his supposed kids. Except he's not responsible; they are definitely not his kids! But he's buying them as, essentially, a status symbol. I mean- I'm happy for the momes, it's better treatment than they'd get otherwis, and it's not a bad sum! At least not at Magnon's level. But it's not like he actually wants them to be HIS kids, or raised up in the same way at all. Consider what he'd make of Marius being raised on the same allowance.  I find this one of the more interesting, if not exactly heartwarming, family arrangements in the book.
And again, here's the claim-- from the narrative, this time?? That if Gillenormand were “rich” he'd have been SUPER GENEROUS. Except he is?? ARGH.  
His brother the priest sure sounds like a piece of work, though. What an awesome family for little Marius! UGH.
Final note on this chapter: Mom Pontmercy died at 30, presumably after Waterloo, but I think not by much? WHY DO WE NOT LEARN MORE ABOUT HER.
