Made in Chelsea - S05 E10

In this episode Proudlock and Francis go running. Phoebe continues to be the actual worst, and Fran hangs out with Binky. 

Fran hanging out with Binky is sad because Binky is a much better friend than Phoebe and I think Fran can sense this, but she’s already committed to the Phoebe squad. Fran must blend into the blonde background while Phoebe saunters about “having a beehive” and “not being into Alex”. The beehive I am referring to here is Phoebe’s incredibly dated hairstyle, but I think she would have been a more likeable character if her whole personality was rooted in the fact that she carried around an actual hive of bees wherever she went. Imagine the dialogue:

Lucy: Who invited you? Phoebee: I’m actually here with a friend. Lucy: I didn’t invite you and this is my party so why don’t you literally buzz off. 

It would be an outstanding and whimsical twist for the show to have taken in its 5th season. 

Something quaint about this episode is that Proudlock and Francis’ fight over running girl is a sweet record of how the world worked before dating apps happened. Admittedly, she was almost definitely scouted and cast for this role, but it’s fun to see two guys meeting the same girl at a communal activity and pursuing her through actual in person dates. There’s something sweet and nostalgic about this. Remember how Lucy met Alex in...a bar. This pre-tinder moment has a certain charm to it. It’s analogue. 

The analogue world is something that Made in Chelsea delivers during a year when many of us have migrated almost entirely online. We retreat into our digital caves and hope that at some point we’ll be allowed back out, but this show is the closest we can get to going on awkward holidays to Barcelona, for brunch with Binky or to an incredibly awkward party at Lucy’s Dad’s pub. While at the time it was made it filled the aspirational hole of “I wish I was rich enough to live like that all the time”, Made in Chelsea now allows us to vicariously fulfill our dreams of “being in a pub”, “meeting up with friends”, or even “having a cold.” 

I’ve been on this viewing journey for at least two years now and I don’t know if I will ever reach the end given the rate at which the series is produced. But in lockdown, Made in Chelsea has reminded me what it felt like to sit on a fucking terrace with friends and I consider that invaluable.

One of those amazing films that you don’t hear much talk of now! Spike Jonze's 1999 fantasy comedy "Being John Malkovich", written by the fantastic Charlie Kaufman (who was also responsible for "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind"). This cult classic of a film stars John Cusack, Cameron Diaz (who is almost unrecognisable) and Catherine Keener as we follow an out of work puppeteer through a portal into the mind of John Malkovich (who also appears as himself).
