Single Review: “x ANA x” by Badflower
Tumblr media
Badflower rode the wave of success that “Ghost” afforded them for a good chunk of 2018. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. They created an exceptional song that connected with people and scored a respectable spot on the charts, especially considering just a year or so ago Badflower was a group unknown to most music fans. It served its purpose, creating anticipation for the quartet’s debut full-length album that was promised to be released in the near future. However, the downside to milking a song like that is it can create unreasonable expectations in the eyes of fans. It can build up a song so much that people can cease wondering what will follow it up and instead ponder how it could be followed. That’s kind of what that lead single did, being so incredible and making such a buzz, people hearing it so much that it was easy to perceive it as being lightning in a bottle. It is, though there’s a good chance that that term will be applicable to OK, I'M SICK (out on February 22nd, 2019 via Big Machine Records / John Varvatos Records) as a whole as well.
The official announcement of that LP and its release date came alongside the debut of “x ANA x”, a song that in its own right is every bit as fantastic as “Ghost”. That said, they’re really not even comparable other than in respect to the urgency, though even “x ANA x” (which can be read as Xanax) seems to have it outmatched in that area. This latest single showcases a different side of Badflower, highlighting what a versatile outfit they are as they incorporate influences from a variety of genres into the around four-and-a-half-minute long piece. Some of the licks evoke a vintage rock ‘n’ roll sound, though at most moments it boasts a modern spin of hard and alternative rock. Hell, it even possesses all of the hallmarks of a truly spectacular arena-rock song, not even needing to try when it comes to getting the adrenaline pumping. It does it effortlessly, even if this still young group is a long way off from commanding a crowd of that size, they’re at least presenting themselves as being capable of it. A genuine rock number, “x ANA x” is wild as can be, soaring and gritty riffs colliding with boisterous vocals and rapid-fire and sonorous beats. That chaotic state is behooving of the song, especially when taking the lyrical content into consideration, the music and lyrics working brilliantly together in order to make it a beast. Another highly emotional number, “x ANA x” deals with addiction and losing yourself to it as life grows more and more overwhelming, an escape from it being imperative. It delves so much deeper than that though, singer and guitarist Josh Katz seemingly exploring all of his insecurities and deepest fears, baring his soul for the listener. “…And I'm living a sick life that most people call privilege. And they’re kinda right, but I'm still sicker than I can cope with…” goes one poignant line, while other segments allude towards the pressure of performing, fearing you won’t be able to live up to the expectations imposed on you and how that messes with the mind. None of it is done from a “oh, poor, pitiful me” perspective, though. There’s never anything that could even be construed as asking for sympathy. Rather, “x ANA x” is what any song should be: an outlet, a means for a songwriter to get personal and candid with their fans and at best even forge a stronger bond between them. That’s what happens in this instance, the single shedding light on their perspective of the crazy ride that Badflower’s career has turned into; Katz employing an array of tactics when it comes to singing. From keeping up with the mile a minute pace, spitting out some of the lyrics at a breakneck pace, to speaking/rhyming other lines he’s able to sound as if he’s channeling that anxiety, going from being energetic to sounding as if he’s coming apart at the seams as the stresses of life become too overwhelming. The song runs the gamut of emotions and it will likely take several listens in order to fully appreciate the fine nuances of all of the craftsmanship that went into it. Katz, Joey Morrow, Anthony Sonetti and Alex Espiritu really outdid themselves with “x ANA x”. As explosive of a rock song as anyone could hope to hear it’s incredibly well-rounded. There’s something infectious about it, the refrain sure to have everyone singing along, yet it’s also primal and edgy, the four of them just cutting loose, letting things play out as they may. “x ANA x” gives further credence to the notion that Badflower is one of the next great rock bands. These first two tracks from OK, I’M SICK are outstanding; their enthusiasm and passion bleeding through into their work, thus resulting in it being all the more gripping. If that holds true for the rest of the record than Badflower will likely be responsible for one of the best albums of 2019.
