Promise Me
pairing: dallas winston x reader
warnings: none i think
notes:
i apologize in advance if this is not so good, i haven’t written anything proper in so long 🥺 & this was inspired by the song promise me by badflower <33
・゚: *✧・゚:*: ・゚✧*:・゚
You and Dallas crashed on the bed, laying next to each other and thinking of everything but nothing at the same time. Every once in a while you’d take a glance at Dallas’ face, taking in every little detail. How he had a cut above his lip but was too prideful to ask if you could clean it up, how his hair stuck up from him tugging at it in distress. You were so enthralled with the details he held that you didn’t notice his eyes on you. Once you did, you couldn’t help but smile, which made his frown disappear quickly.
“You’re so beautiful,” He spoke, his thumb grazing your cheek and his fingers occasionally moving to tuck the fallen strands of hair behind your ear. You cuddled into his chest and fiddled with his St. Christopher— the necklace he planned on giving to you soon. You could hear his heartbeat which was comforting to you, knowing he was here right now is all that mattered.
“Promise me,” He said with a quiet tone, “promise me that we’ll never grow old. Or when we’re no longer young, we’ll still be together laughing.”
At first, you stayed silent. You wondered what made him think this, why was this one of his thoughts?
“Okay.” You tangled your fingers with his, “I promise you.”
The both of you held each other in silence, and your mind pondered at the promise you just made. A promise that can be broken within a second. To you, nothing lasted forever, especially with Dallas. He took too many risks that are life-threatening and you knew you could lose him at any moment, and you knew he had many issues that could make him walk away someday.
“Even when times get hard, i won’t walk away without you. I’m nothing like my parents.” He promised, pressing his lips to your forehead and holding you close.
“I’ll love you ‘till forever, Dal.” You whispered into his chest, letting yourself fall asleep in his protective arms and to the sound of his beating heart and quiet breathing.

Friday, March 22nd, 2019 – Badflower Delights Dallas Fans with a Brief but Intense Performance at South Side Ballroom
Tumblr media
Photos by Jordan Buford Photography 2017 was the year Badflower really began to introduce themselves to music fans, even if relatively few took notice at the time. 2018 was the breakout year for the quartet that hails from Los Angeles thanks to a massively successful single; and now, 2019 is poised to be a banner year for the young group who has suddenly found themselves at the forefront of the rock ‘n’ roll world. Their highly anticipated debut LP OK, I'M SICK (out via Big Machine Records / John Varvatos Records) had dropped one short month ago, an album that is certain to propel Badflower to new heights. And their first tour to promote that record found them on the road supporting Nothing More, that tour finding its way to Dallas on this Friday night, where, between those two, it was kind of difficult to tell who patrons were more excited for. Certainly the headliner was responsible for the majority of the draw at South Side Ballroom, but with Badflower having generated so much buzz at the moment, you could sense the curiosity and anticipation that surrounded their set. That was especially true since a lot of attendees had likely never actually seen Badflower before, and, at least like myself, were interested to discover if all of the hype surrounding them was appropriate or not.
Tumblr media
They came armed with their own lighting, several panels with multiple lights on each one placed behind them, resulting in a performance that was reliant on creating an atmosphere; the front lighting being almost nonexistent. Simple as that was, it went a long way in terms of presentation; the four-piece outfit taking the stage promptly at 7:20 that evening, radiating a subtle confidence that said they were more than comfortable in a venue of this scale with several hundred people looking on at them. They quickly set things in motion with the lead track from their full-length, the manic sounding “x ANA x” kicking off the wild ride they had in store for listeners. The thing about Badflower is they can’t really be pigeonholed into one specific sound. Sure, they’re a rock band, though they incorporate various styles into their music, the lead track being as chaotic as the desperation that is heard in the lyrics. Perhaps what was most remarkable, the recording of that song sounds so authentic that one would think it might be challenging to replicate the urgency and rawness of it in the live environment, particularly in regards to singer and rhythm guitarist Josh Katz and what’s required of him as a vocalist. They pulled it off perfectly, though, even making sure the performance matched. During an instrumental break Katz abruptly dropped to the floor, laying on his back and shredding; while Alex Espiritu had plenty of room over on stage left and was frequently seen leaping into the air with his bass.
Tumblr media
Hitting the key highlights from OK, I’M SICK, they also appeased any longtime and/or loyal fans with several cuts from the 2016 EP, Temper. The garage rock sounding “Drop Dead” was the first of a couple consecutive ones, and it was during that number that the spectators really began to get a look at what Badflower was truly capable of. A quick backbend Katz did at the edge of the stage, leaning over the pit that separated them from the audience soon turned into him stretching out across the relatively narrow gap, steadying himself with one foot on the barricade. A grin spread across his face as he attacked his guitar, putting on a brief clinic for a few lucky patrons as he brandished it close to their faces. It was a classic rock star move to be honest, and if anyone was still having doubts that dismissed them. Badflower was legit, and rather it was intentional or not, they were at least going to attempt to steal the show.
Tumblr media
“How many of you have heard our new album?” Katz asked once they had knocked out another track. A great deal of fanfare acted as his answer. “Do you have an open mind?” he questioned, which was met with the same enthusiasm. “Are you sure?” he finished, suddenly sounding more cautionary, as if he hoped the concertgoers were truly ready for what they were about to receive.
Tumblr media
“Die” minces no words, and no one seemed to care about the bluntness of it. A politically charged anthem that airs their feelings regarding the current presidential administration the delivery of it was teeming with venom. A nice touch given that sonically there’s something of a punk approach to that song, which served to really invigorate the crowd. Upon first listening to the record that’s a track that comes out of left field, sounding unlike anything else that Badflower has created, and that’s meant in the best possible way. It had that same effect in the live setting, no one knowing that powerhouse that’s marked by disgust and loathing was coming, and it struck with a fury. That blistering intensity allowed it to stand out as arguably the best song of their set, even rivaling – and in my opinion surpassing -- the beloved “Ghost” that has dominated the radio waves since its release. Before that hit single was performed Katz addressed everyone, mentioning that since this wasn’t their show, they didn’t have the time to go through a full set like they wished they could. He asked how many would like to see them back on that stage should they return. That was most everyone, making it rather feasible to think that Badflower will be headlining spaces like South Side Ballroom in the not too distant future.
Tumblr media
33-minutes was all they got with Dallas on this trip, the last bit of that allotted time being filled with the primal “Animal”. Drummer Anthony Sonetti’s talents were prominently displayed at several points throughout the show, though that song was where he was at his finest, injecting a pure animalistic vibe into it. The carefully precise beats were akin to a beast stalking its prey, the more aggressive moments being about striking. It was a solid finish to what had been an excellent show. One that earned Badflower some new fans and made those that were already supporters more enamored with them, everybody wanting more. Sadly, they’ll have to wait for that, but hopefully it won’t be long of a wait. Considering Katz, lead guitarist Joey Morrow, Espiritu and Sonetti are still new at this – at least in regard to performing at shows of this magnitude – they handled themselves exceptionally well, already having refined themselves to the point that they’re best able to enrapture audiences of this size.
Tumblr media
Their performance was both atmospheric and an all-out assault that did rock ‘n’ roll proud, striking a nice balance between the two. The stage was frequently bathed in a blue light, and with the other lights at the back of the stage steadily and continuously illuminating them it collectively created a nice aura, one that was complementary of both the fierce and more tranquil moments. Highlighting the diversity of their music was the creativeness that went into, every track being distinctly different yet unmistakable as the work of Badflower. That’s a rare trait for a band, and one that will serve them well going forward, because no matter how good a formula a band settles on is, listeners will eventually tire of hearing something that’s just a subtle variation of what they’ve already done. Perhaps their strongest quality of all is the fact that every song showcases the prowess of each musician in different ways. Morrow’s riffs were slick and bold, and he frequently outright shredded; while Sonetti was the constant guiding force even when his playing was more subdued, though he was at his best when he was crashing down on the drums and cymbals. The bass wasn’t always as audible as the other instruments, though Espiritu’s presence was undeniable and he was crucial in making their performance so dynamic. As for Katz, he’s quite the versatile singer, possessing a nice range from smooth and serene to angsty and vicious. Without question that is his greatest weapon: the range of emotions that he draws on, emotions that frequently bled through on his face as he sang, the passion for what he was doing evident.
Tumblr media
Badflower is all they’re cracked up to be and then some, their rather quick rise from relative obscurity to experiencing some pretty respectable moments of success being well deserved. With a new LP to promote you can bet that they’ll be on the road a whole lot more this year. And hopefully Dallas will get another dose in the near future, too. Their current schedule is packed full of shows all the way through the summer. That includes scheduled dates all around the U.S. with some European gigs mixed in as well. The closest they’ll be getting to Dallas in the coming months will be a visit to Cain’s Ballroom in Tulsa, OK on April 24th and then June 21st at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion in The Woodlands, TX, in case anyone wants to make a road trip. A complete list of their tour schedule can be found HERE; and if you have yet to get a copy of OK, I’M SICK, check it out in iTUNES or GOOGLE PLAY. Set List: 1) “x ANA x” 2) “Drop Dead” 3) “White Noise” 4) “Die” 5) “Heroin” 6) “Ghost” 7) “Animal”

Single Review: “x ANA x” by Badflower
Tumblr media
Badflower rode the wave of success that “Ghost” afforded them for a good chunk of 2018. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. They created an exceptional song that connected with people and scored a respectable spot on the charts, especially considering just a year or so ago Badflower was a group unknown to most music fans. It served its purpose, creating anticipation for the quartet’s debut full-length album that was promised to be released in the near future. However, the downside to milking a song like that is it can create unreasonable expectations in the eyes of fans. It can build up a song so much that people can cease wondering what will follow it up and instead ponder how it could be followed. That’s kind of what that lead single did, being so incredible and making such a buzz, people hearing it so much that it was easy to perceive it as being lightning in a bottle. It is, though there’s a good chance that that term will be applicable to OK, I'M SICK (out on February 22nd, 2019 via Big Machine Records / John Varvatos Records) as a whole as well.
The official announcement of that LP and its release date came alongside the debut of “x ANA x”, a song that in its own right is every bit as fantastic as “Ghost”. That said, they’re really not even comparable other than in respect to the urgency, though even “x ANA x” (which can be read as Xanax) seems to have it outmatched in that area. This latest single showcases a different side of Badflower, highlighting what a versatile outfit they are as they incorporate influences from a variety of genres into the around four-and-a-half-minute long piece. Some of the licks evoke a vintage rock ‘n’ roll sound, though at most moments it boasts a modern spin of hard and alternative rock. Hell, it even possesses all of the hallmarks of a truly spectacular arena-rock song, not even needing to try when it comes to getting the adrenaline pumping. It does it effortlessly, even if this still young group is a long way off from commanding a crowd of that size, they’re at least presenting themselves as being capable of it. A genuine rock number, “x ANA x” is wild as can be, soaring and gritty riffs colliding with boisterous vocals and rapid-fire and sonorous beats. That chaotic state is behooving of the song, especially when taking the lyrical content into consideration, the music and lyrics working brilliantly together in order to make it a beast. Another highly emotional number, “x ANA x” deals with addiction and losing yourself to it as life grows more and more overwhelming, an escape from it being imperative. It delves so much deeper than that though, singer and guitarist Josh Katz seemingly exploring all of his insecurities and deepest fears, baring his soul for the listener. “…And I'm living a sick life that most people call privilege. And they’re kinda right, but I'm still sicker than I can cope with…” goes one poignant line, while other segments allude towards the pressure of performing, fearing you won’t be able to live up to the expectations imposed on you and how that messes with the mind. None of it is done from a “oh, poor, pitiful me” perspective, though. There’s never anything that could even be construed as asking for sympathy. Rather, “x ANA x” is what any song should be: an outlet, a means for a songwriter to get personal and candid with their fans and at best even forge a stronger bond between them. That’s what happens in this instance, the single shedding light on their perspective of the crazy ride that Badflower’s career has turned into; Katz employing an array of tactics when it comes to singing. From keeping up with the mile a minute pace, spitting out some of the lyrics at a breakneck pace, to speaking/rhyming other lines he’s able to sound as if he’s channeling that anxiety, going from being energetic to sounding as if he’s coming apart at the seams as the stresses of life become too overwhelming. The song runs the gamut of emotions and it will likely take several listens in order to fully appreciate the fine nuances of all of the craftsmanship that went into it. Katz, Joey Morrow, Anthony Sonetti and Alex Espiritu really outdid themselves with “x ANA x”. As explosive of a rock song as anyone could hope to hear it’s incredibly well-rounded. There’s something infectious about it, the refrain sure to have everyone singing along, yet it’s also primal and edgy, the four of them just cutting loose, letting things play out as they may. “x ANA x” gives further credence to the notion that Badflower is one of the next great rock bands. These first two tracks from OK, I’M SICK are outstanding; their enthusiasm and passion bleeding through into their work, thus resulting in it being all the more gripping. If that holds true for the rest of the record than Badflower will likely be responsible for one of the best albums of 2019. The Noise Presents: Nothing More’s The Truth Tour Featuring Of Mice & Men, Badflower & Palisades
Tumblr media
Look, while we realize 2018 still has plenty left to offer (Halloween, Thanksgiving, a possible presidential impeachment, etc.), it’s time to look towards 2019. Forget about October, November and December, let’s focus on late February as The Noise will yet again be teaming up with budding hard rock superstars Nothing More for their largest headlining run featuring none other than Of Mice & Men, Bad Flower and Palisades.
That’s right! Kicking off February 21st in Phoenix, Nothing More and The Noise will be joining forces to bring you The Truth Tour -- aka the most kickass Nothing More experience you’ve ever seen.
"This is our biggest headline tour yet so we are very excited to have such a great lineup," says Nothing More vocalist Jonny Hawkins. "We are all big fans of openers Badflower and Palisades, but especially Of Mice & Men, who we’ve always wanted to tour with.”
When asked about where the idea for the “Truth” tour came about, Hawkins said, “Concerts are perfect environments to stimulate the revelation of a truth, an ‘ah-HA!’ moment, because we are all sharing the energy of the music and the moments of community and inspiration, moments that can affect a positive change. It's not about any one political movement or cause, it's about everybody searching for the truth in all things, and putting that new awareness into action.”
Speaking of putting awareness into action, to go along with all the great bands on this tour, The Truth Tour will also feature two incredible organizations at all 23 dates: HeadCount, the non-partisan voter registration organization that handles first-time and all voters’ registration needs, and To Write Love on Her Arms, the non-profit movement dedicated to presenting hope and options for people struggling with depression and addiction. $1 from the purchase of every ticket will be donated to To Write Love On Her Arms.
"Over the years, through thoughtful songwriting and wearing TWLOHA gear on tour, Nothing More has consistently sought ways to include their fans in a search for Truth,” said TWLOHA’S Chad Moses. "We’ve seen firsthand how they empower their fans to embrace things that we believe to be true: that stigma surrounding mental health deserves to be challenged, that your story deserves an audience, and that together we can embody a defiant sense of Hope. We look forward to standing alongside Nothing More on this journey toward Truth.”
As for HeadCount, Executive Director Andy Bernstein shares a similar enthusiasm saying, "This is an exciting partnership for HeadCount, and we're thrilled to start our 2019 touring season with Nothing More. The tour reflects HeadCount's driving ethos that your vote is your Truth. We appreciate how Nothing More empowers and challenges their fanbase to become more engaged in the democratic process -- and the band leads by example with their own civic participation. We're looking forward to registering and educating voters with Nothing More and shedding light on just how easy it is to make your voice heard."
Tickets for the upcoming can’t miss tour will go on sale to the public this Friday at 10am local time. For a chance at exclusive pre-sale tickets, stay tuned to all Noise socials. For VIP packages, which include The Meet & Greet Package and the Early Entry VIP Package (both featuring a limited edition, autographed copy of the 10th-anniversary re-release of 2009's The Few Not Fleeting on clear vinyl), head here. Single Review: “Ghost” by Badflower
Tumblr media
Badflower is probably a new band to many, though the Los Angeles-based quartet has spent several years cutting their teeth, preparing for the noteworthy tours they have since been a part of, where they made certain that they were a supporting band that patrons would want to check out. The heavy touring schedule they’ve kept (which has included some appearances at major festivals) has been instrumental in them getting to where they’re at now, where they’re poised to be one of the next biggest things in the modern rock era. That’s sure what their latest single, “Ghost” (out via Big Machine Records / John Varvatos Records), leads one to believe as Badflower continues to build anticipation for their forthcoming debut LP. “Ghost” has become a smashing success on some of the rock charts, probably becoming one of the most played songs currently on radio, and for good reason. However, where a lot of songs in this modern era achieve that because they’re catchy and have a good vibe, Badflower went a different route in scoring this hit: they made something with substance.
“Ghost” is a testament to the fact that bands can still write something meaningful, something with passion and heart and find an audience for it. There are multiple ways to interpret “Ghost”, all depending on the listeners’ perspective. Some may consider it outright morbid and depressing, while it may offer some sort of hope to others thanks to the artfully way it deals with the sensitive topic of depression and self-harm that can result from some cases. Whichever way you choose to view it, there’s no arguing that it’s an incredibly visceral song that delves into the complex emotions people in those circumstances are experiencing, neither condemning nor glorifying their choices, all while trying to offer some sort of insight for those struggling as well as those close to them. The story depicted by the lyrics begins innocently enough, introducing the listener to a person making a cry for help, cutting themselves, but being measured with their actions. The final lines from the first verse then set the tone, “…And all I really wanted was someone to give a little fuck. But I waited there forever and nobody even looked up,” Josh Katz mournfully croons, depicting a person who feels ignored an unimportant, and therefore doesn’t believe there’s much reason to keep going. Katz and fellow band mates Joey Morrow (lead guitar), Alex Espiritu (bass) and Anthony Sonetti (drums) cover a lot of ground in the slightly less than four and a half minutes that “Ghost” runs, the severity of the situation becoming more apparent, the character in the song acknowledging their thoughts aren’t normal and expressing their fears, though it’s countered by steadily feeling as if existing is too much of a burden to bear, as the line, “…this life is overwhelming and I'm ready for the next one,” makes so painfully clear. It’s a story that’s real and raw, and bound to strike a chord with quite a few, but as bleak as it often sounds, there are little things peppered in meant to make anyone who may need to hear it second guess their potential actions. The vivid bridge is the best example of that, especially how it ends, “…The cutting part was easy but regretting it is so fucked.” Whether it’s the idea of suicide or actually following through with it, that’s a tricky subject matter for any band to try to tackle, yet Badflower has done it masterfully. With “Ghost” they’ve created a song that does it’s best to capture how some people may feel, like as if they don’t matter and have no direct impact on anyone’s lives, especially when an attempt at getting a helping hand goes unnoticed. It also tries to offer a different perspective, though, such as the thoughts that occur once there’s no going back and how it may not actually be as freeing as how some might imagine it will be. As well as it’s written in regards to the story it tells, the emotive layers of “Ghost” are only bolstered by the music bed. It’s a prime example of how music and lyrics are meant to interact with one another, striking up a sort of harmony in order to convey the full depth of emotions that any quality song should have. In this case it’s the more tranquil, at times even barren first verse that is reflective of the isolation and depression, the gentle riffs and atmospheric percussion enhancing that mood. The first chorus sees a dramatic rise in emotions, the guitars, bass and drums unleashing a sudden onslaught that sounds blistering before slipping back into some feeling of being disconnected. There’s something marvelous about the way it’s so restrained, roars to life and then tapers back off. It so accurately captures the internal struggle that is transpiring, growing more painful and even chaotic during the interlude as everything comes to a head. The near a cappella delivery of the first segment of the bridge is absolutely phenomenal, Katz sounding desperate, broken and at the end of his rope, the track ultimately unleashing the full potential it has been hinting at by becoming a beast of a song in its final moments. “Ghost” is everything a truly amazing song should be, the members of Badflower having essentially caught lightning in a bottle with this one. It carries a powerful message and is executed so meticulously in order for said message to fully resonate with people. Katz, Morrow, Espiritu, and Sonetti didn’t hold anything back when it came to penning this one and it shows, the heart and soul being evident throughout this palpable piece that is alt rock at its finest. It’s of such a high caliber that it’s one of those songs a band could spend a whole career trying to write and still not succeed at it. The kind of song that, in a way, is timeless and will be crucial to the legacy that Badflower is sure to have. It also sets a high standard for their upcoming full-length record. “Ghost” will be central to it, no doubt, but will the other songs they’ve written be on par with this one? Hopefully so; and if they are, it will ensure Badflower ranks as one of the most elite of the next group of future rock stars.
