So we've all heard of the "I Want Song" genre in musicals.
But what about the "Let's talk about the bitch behind their back like they're not in the room" song, or "singing s*** behing a bitche's back". There's a surprising amount of them.
Tumblr media
"Belle" from Beauty and the Beast
Tumblr media
"Scrooge" from Muppet Christmas Carol
Tumblr media
"Maria" from The Sound of Music
Tumblr media
"Look at Me I'm Sandra Dee" from Grease
Tumblr media
"You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch" from How The Grinch Stole Christmas
Tumblr media
"Jackass In a Can" from Galavant
Tumblr media
"Phony King of England" from Robin Hood
Tumblr media
"Stepsister's Lament" from Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella
Tumblr media
"Non-Stop" from Hamilton
And, of course, the man, the myth, the legend...
Tumblr media
"We Don't Talk About Bruno" from Encanto
You can learn a lot about a character and story from what they sing versus what other people sing about them.

Being theatrical doesn't mean you have to be a nuclear explosion. It can be like a quiet storm. You just have to radiate emotion, express what's deep inside you.
That’s what T H E A T R I C A L I T Y is all about

Sweet Pea- Grease Is The Word
Look At Me I’m Sandra Dee
Tumblr media
That evening I'm at Betty's house with the girls plus Kevin. We’re currently trying to catch gummy bears in our mouths
"Okay, I'm gonna try it" Betty says opening her mouth. Cheryl takes some gummy bears and trying to throw them into Betty's mouth
"Whoo" we all yell when she does it
"Okay, can we please order pizza from Little Cicero's?" Betty begs. Toni scoffs a little "guys it's not a sleep over without a greasy pizza. Right Kev?" We all look over at Kevin who's sat on Betty's window seat looking out
"Kev?" I sit up from my position on Betty's bed
"Sorry it's just... working on the variety show made me feel like I was reconnecting with pre farm Kevin” I frown feeling confused
“Long story” Toni says, still making me feel confused
“Mr Honey didn't just take that from me. He made me feel like I was nothing. Like I didn't matter" Kevin sighs looking back out of the window
"You know something that makes me feel better?" Betty says “make over”
"I hear what your saying Betty but I'm not sure
even a makeover will help" Kevin speaks. Kevin's words mean nothing and the girls all take out makeup and wigs. We all give each other a make overs and dress up.
“Everyone try this” Veronica takes out a bottle from her bag “this is mine and Cheryl’s rum. Try it” she hands the bottle to Betty who takes a sip. The bottle is passed around until it gets to me
“Oh no I’m ok thank you though”
“Come on just a sip” Cheryl encourages
“Hey if she doesn’t want to don’t pressure her” Betty defends me
“It’s just we have school tomorrow and I don’t…”
“You don’t drink?” Cheryl asks. I shake my head no “ok fine but your missing out” she goes to take the bottle from my hands
“Ok wait. Just a little sip can’t hurt right?” I take the tiniest sip which causes me to cough
“Should have warned you it may burn a little” Cheryl shrugs
“Hey YN why don’t you try out for the cheer team. We’re all on it” Josie says
“Oh I don’t know I’m not that good”
“That’s ok, Cheryl can help can’t you?”
“I can?”
“Look I don’t want to be a bother so…”
“No it’s fine. You wanna hang with us, you gotta be like us”
“I’m going to wash off my makeup” I tell the girls and head into Betty’s bathroom. When I return though I hear Josie saying some horrible things
“Are you making fun of me Josie?”
“If the shoe fits” Josie says getting up
“She’s just jealous because a few summers ago her and Sweet Pea had a fling. She didn’t want to go public and so he moved on” Cheryl says
“Whatever”
The following day I enter the gym while no one else is in there to practice and stretch. I try to go down into the spilts, like Cheryl showed me, but I get a little stuck
“Hey YN” I gasp hearing Sweet Pea’s voice behind me
“Hi” I feel his arms around me lifting me up
“Since when we’re you a cheerleader?”
“Oh Veronica said I should” I walk away from him, not wanting to be close by him
“Hey your not upset about yesterday are you? Couldn’t you tell I was glad to see ya?”
“Well you could have been a little nicer to me in front of your friends”
“You don’t know them. Especially Reggie. If it were up to me I wouldn’t look at another girl”
“Well it is up to you”
“Cheryl’s having a party Friday night. Why don’t you come with me, so I can make it up to you”
“Fine but you’ve got some making up to do” I say crossing my arms. Sweet Pea walks over to me, he moves a stray hair from my face and tucks it behind my ear
“Hey guys” Josie says walking over. Sweet Pea and I move away from one another
“Sweet Pea my mom said you should come over for dinner again tomorrow night” Josie says emphasising the words ‘again’
“Pea?” I frown “why were you at hers? You just said…”
“I know what I just said. I was only there for homework”
“You know what I can’t wait wait to make a good impression on those cute letterman’s”
“Oh so that’s the real reason your wearing that”
“Don’t tell me your jealous Sweet Pea” I pout
“What? me jealous? I don’t get jealous”
“Fine so you won’t mind me cheering in front of the bulldogs”
“Na”
“Good”
“Good”
“Fine”
“Fine”
“Hmm” I turn and leave the gym.

To all the people that are saying that Rise of the Pink Ladies doesn't have memorable music the way the og Grease had:
1) did you know Greace is a 44 year old cult classic while Rise of the Pink Ladies is a tv show who's first season is still airing?
2) Were you aware there's songs in Grease that aren't Summer Nights, Look at Me I'm Sandra Dee, Hopeless Devoted to You, Greased Lightning and You're the One That I want?

Old-Time Tradition: Folk Musicals
Grease (1978)
This film follows Danny (John Travolta) and Sandy (Olivia Newton-John), two teenagers from different worlds. After a summer fling,  they thought they would never see each other ever again, but unexpectedly reunite in the same school. Sandy, initially a wholesome stereotypical "IT girl”, tries to fit in with Danny's greaser crew, the T-Birds, and their sassy counterparts, the Pink Ladies.
Tumblr media
Identity in Grease: A Song and Dance
The musical numbers in Grease are very energetic and catchy, but they also play a big role in exploring how the characters navigate their identities. Many songs like "Look at Me, I'm Sandra Dee"—(I don’t drink, or swear. I don’t wrap my hair. I get ill from one cigarette. Keep your filthy paws from my silky dress)—and "Beauty School Dropout" showcase characters trying on different identities. Sandy tries to be the ideal 50s girl, while Rizzo rejects society's expectations. They all use songs to experiment and find their place in the T-Birds/Pink Ladies dynamic. On the other hand, songs like "Greased Lightnin'" and "We Go Together" solidify that bond that we can perceive between the T-Birds and Pink Ladies. Moreover, love, frustration, and teenage angst all find voice through the music. "Hopelessly Devoted to You", probably the most emotional song on the movie’s tracklist, lays bare Sandy's feelings, portraying her as the basic, easily enamored girl.
youtube
The film reinforces stereotypical gendered behaviors. For example, in “Summer Nights”, the girls' lyrics ("Tell me more, was it love at first sight?") center around romance and emotions, suggesting a more emotional and sensitive view of love. Whereas the boys' lyrics ("Tell me more, did she put up a fight?")  imply a focus on sexual conquest, portraying a more aggressive and sexualized view of romantic relationships. The song reinforces the idea that men and women approach love differently based on these stereotypes and it could be argued that it promotes non-consensual intimacy.
youtube
The characters in Grease don't just burst into song for no reason, their world revolves around music. The energy and choreography allow characters to process their emotions in a big way. In fact, the film doesn't shy away from showing the characters enjoying music and dance for pure fun.
Yet, the world of Grease isn't exactly diverse
It is noticeable that the film avoids touching on any serious social issues of the 1950s, like racial tensions or economic disparity. This creates a sanitized version of the past and ignores the complexities of real life. Moreover, it pushes away the idea of 'Black Joy' as being something achievable even more. The music itself doesn't delve into racial themes, and there is quite literally, only one visible Black character in the movie—Frederick "Dennis" Greene as part of the singing group Johnny Casino and the Gamblers, reinforcing the idea that "Black musicality—the all-blacks-got-rhythm syndrome—of White cinema." (Dyer 98.)
Tumblr media
The Ordinary → Utopia
Several elements align with the classic trope of white musicals seeking to transform the ordinary into a utopia; everyone is happy and music comes out of nowhere. Sandy's journey from a demure, "good girl" to a leather-clad greaser epitomizes this trope. Her initial wholesomeness represents the ordinary, while her adoption of the greaser look signifies a transformation into something cooler and more exciting. This aligns with the utopian ideal of escapism. On the other hand, Rydell High itself is portrayed as a somewhat utopian space. Sure, there are cliques and social pressures, but overall, it's a place where teenagers can have carefree fun. Finally, the film's resolution reinforces the utopian ideal. Danny and Sandy reconcile, the T-Birds and Pink Ladies maintain their cool-kid status, and everyone seems to get their happily-ever-after. This all-pink ending avoids the complexities of real life, where there are serious conflicts and consequences for teenage rebellion, and presents a more utopian world.
Circular time?
Black musicals often depict a cyclical view of time, where characters return to their "real life." As Dyer states, "white joy is in a space freed from labor; Black fun dips into the thing to have a good time while working." We can clearly notice this in the film. The ending suggests the T-Birds and Pink Ladies will stay on this high school path, but there's no real sense of daily life hardship.

why YOU, yes you, should ship mopierce: a ten item list!
1) they are next to each other in choreography a ton! some examples are in i kissed a girl (s3), look at me i'm sandra dee, and summer lovin'!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2) they're two of the only characters in glee to either be explicitly or implicitly autistic– sugar is self diagnosed with autism and shows symptoms (primarily bluntness and stimming) and brittany is incredibly implied to be autistic (she has a hard time picking up on jokes, she's blunt, she has interests she's incredibly passionate about to an 'abnormal' degree). what's better than one autistic girl? two. what's better than two autistic girls? two autistic girls who kiss
3) both have been romantic interests of artie and rory and the idea of your exes getting together is an idea i will always giggle at and sometimes eat up if done right– and mopierce does it right!
4) they have three ship names! does your favorite ship have three different names? actually yeah probably but
5) sugar is kinda implied to be a fan of the cheerios, specifically the unholy trinity, with how she cheers when they want to perform in s4!! she is such a proud girlfriend and loved supporting her in her cheerleading endeavors
6) brittany and mercedes are the only main troubletone who don't shoot down her ideas and berate her. if you want to get wild and yurious you could make them a sugar-loving polycule
7) the one and only person who enjoyed sugar's performance was brittany. the guy she ends up romantically involved with doesn't even like it and insults her, but brittany is loving every second of it! she is sugar's biggest fan and sugar needs that kind of a partner because it's shown that she struggles with self confidence despite the front she puts up
8) sugar loves draping herself over brittany and being physically affectionate in general; if she is near brittany she will be loving on her
Tumblr media Tumblr media
9) they both have silly names :-) !!
10) erm. i ran out of reasons. just look at them and think real hard

i'm sure that someone's talked about grease in ducktales 2017, but there's a few quick thoughts.
gandra dee is obviously a direct spoof on the song sandra dee from grease. the MC's name is actually sandra olsson but due to a series of References the song that the female character who's more "worldly" uses to mock her uses the name sandra dee. will elaborate if asked
sandra, of course, infamously changes for her man at the end of the movie to be more of a "bad girl". this is never really shown to be what she wants, so people don't like it.
gandra dee in ducktales changes for HER love interest, but it's shown to be something that she wants and is legitimately helpful for her, since she was never happy as a villain
the weighted blanket thing with huey is so funny and it FEELS like a reference to "won't go to bed til i'm legally wed". can't swear it is but that feels right. also i must have made this up but i could have SWORN there was a line in look at me i'm sandra dee where they rhyme virginity with anxiety so it would have also been a reference to that. it's not! but it felt like it was
