"I can report that my second time in the NCRM was less emotional — probably because I knew what to expect — but also because I was trying to see the exhibits through the eyes of my children.
It did not take very long before one of my kids started asking the kinds of questions that make America’s history sound so stupid."
My kids asked all of the questions I’d want them to ask, and they all started with “Why?” and frankly, I didn’t have a worthy response to any of their questions. I have had those questions for years myself. But I was proud of them for recognizing and voicing their concerns and asking about and appreciating the history on display. My kids get it and for that, I’m happy and proud."

In high school, MLK became known for his public-speaking ability in his junior year and gave his first public speech during an oratorical contest. In his speech he stated, "black America still wears chains. The finest negro is at the mercy of the meanest white man". King was selected as the winner of the contest.

He initially refused but complied after his teacher told him that he would be breaking the law if he did not follow the directions of the driver. As all the seats were occupied, he and his teacher were forced to stand on the rest of the drive back to Atlanta. Later King wrote of the incident, saying "That night will never leave my memory. It was the angriest I have ever been in my life."
Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated while standing on a balcony outside his second-floor room at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee on April 4, 1968 in Memphis, Tennessee at the age of 39.
