One of the finest examples of Streamline Moderne architecture in the United States, the 1935 Pan-Pacific Auditorium was a landmark structure in Los Angeles. The facade's four stylized towers and flagpoles were meant to evoke upswept aircraft fins. Unfortunately destroyed by fire in 1989, some people may remember it from a certain camp-classic rock musical film premiering in 1980. Perched below the Griffith Observatory and overlooking Hollywood is a lush lot crowned with four towering olive trees and a 1965 home designed by modernist architect Craig Ellwood. When a young couple purchased the home in 2018, it needed substantial work. For a historic restoration, they called on @woods_dangaran, a local firm fluent in modernist history. While keeping original components like the home’s linear shape, open plan, and expansive windows, the team meticulously restored the home. “It was important to us to keep the structure because it really was classic Ellwood,” says Joe Dangaran, one of the firm’s cofounders. One of the most striking features is the original koi pond—a feature deemed so essential that its preservation was a condition of escrow—that’s now crossed via a bridge that leads to a lap pool, perhaps the biggest intervention on the property. The “Los Angeles Jet Age Terminal Construction Project”, 1961⁠⠀ Paul R. Williams (pictured), with Welton Becket and Pereira & Luckman. (Becket designed a number of spots, including Brown Marble in SF, Pereira is responsible for designs at USC and UC Irvine, but more on those later)⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ This project formed the basis for the LAX that we know today, including the space age, or “Googie” Theme Building, illustrated by the hand of Paul R. Williams.
