What To Do If You Lose Your Pet Or Find Someone Else's?

Losing a pet can be very traumatic for both the pet and the owner. Pets become part of the family to many owners. Pets can pull out of their leashes and some have been known to be escape artists. We received a picture of two found dogs on Facebook page and wanted to help people answer the question, What do I do if I my pet is lost or I find a pet? Karen Fordiani from Lee County Domestic Animal Services recommended the following:

Contact local animal shelters and animal control agencies

File a lost pet report with every shelter in the area, call or visit the nearest shelters, if possible. Some shelters post pictures of all pets that have been brought in to their facility in the hopes of reuniting them with their owners. Lee County Domestic Animal Services has a website that can be checked for photos of your missing pet. If you find someone else’s pet contact Lee County Domestic Animal Services within 24 hours. The owner may be checking their website.

Search your neighborhood

Walk or drive through your neighborhood at different times. Ask neighbors, letter carriers and delivery people if they have seen your pet. Hand out a recent photograph of your pet and information on how you can be reached if your pet is found. Post notices around the neighborhood.

Advertise on Social Media

List your dog as missing on social media, especially Facebook. There are multiple pages with the goal of reuniting lost pets with their owners. Groups to notify in Facebook include: Cape Coral Residents Groups, Lee Lost Pets, Cape Lost and Found Pets and Lehigh Lost Pets. You can also post the information in apps like Neighbors and Next Door.

Be wary of pet-recovery scams

When talking to a stranger who claims to have found your pet, ask them to describe the pet thoroughly and ask them to send you a picture before you offer any information. If they do not include the identifying characteristic you left out of the advertisements, they may not really have your pet. Be particularly wary of people who insist that you give or wire them money for the return of your pet.

Don't give up your search

Animals who have been lost for months and years have been reunited with their owners. There is always hope of reuniting pets with their owners.
