박세웅을 향한 나의 애정

우선 그는 절대 내가 좋아하는 선수 유형이 아니었다. 원래 스포츠 선수들은 논란을 좀 일으키더라도 소위 말하는 똘끼 기질이 있는 선수들을 좋아하고 그들은 단순한 스포츠인이 아니라 엔터테이너에 해당하기도 한다. 특히나 프로 스포츠 선수를 평가하는 지표 중 하나는 바로 ‘스타성’이다. 이 스타성엔 실력을 포함해서 선수로서의 애티튜드, 외모, 독특한 일화 등등이 포함된다.

2015년 트레이드로 인지한 박세웅은 정말 평범한 선수였다. 선발 투수라고 하기엔 스몰사이즈, 비쩍 마른 몸, 성실하긴 하지만 대중친화적이라 보기에 어려운 성격... 거기에 타고난 멘탈이 약해서 유리한 카운트를 어렵게 풀카운트로 끌고 가는 플레이 스타일까지. 안경을 쓴 우완 에이스라고 치켜 세우기엔 뭔가 부족한 멘탈과 카리스마.

그럼에도 그 순간부터 지금까지 내가 제일 좋아하는 롯데 선수 중 하나가 바로 박세웅이다. 여러 이유로 탈데한 기간이 길었지만 그의 국대 승선 소식이나 10승 소식, 다년 계약의 소식은 꾸준히 접했고 올해 WBC 한일전에서 콜드게임을 앞두고 등판한 그가 호투하는 모습을 통해 결국 롯데로 돌아왔다. 그리고 이건 올해 최악의 선택이 될 거 같다. 허허...

비록 4월에서 5월 초중순까지 꼴아박긴 했지만 기아전 죄송합니다 이후로 그는 8경기 연속 퀄리티 스타트 이상을 기록하고 있고 위기 관리 능력이나 제구, 구속, 템포조절 등 모든 면에서 내가 바라던 모습을 보여주고 있다. 17년 박세웅은 정말 대단했지만 어쩌면 지금이 정말로 자신의 한계를 뛰어넘을 그 시기가 아닐까. 선수의 전성기가 시작되는 시기가 아닐까. 이 두 가지 기대가 나를 설레게 한다. 적어도 롯데에 입단해서 선발로 뛴 순간부터 너는 나에게 최고의 롯데 선발투수라고 자랑스럽게 외치고 싶어지는 그런 피칭을 보여주고 있다.

그리고 박세웅은 적어도 나에겐 롯데 최고의 선발투수다. 롯데가 차지한 우승은 모두 내가 태어나기 한참 전의 일이었다... 작년 대장 마지막 시즌에 그에게 코시 우승반지 하나 주지 못하는 팀이어서 미안했던 그 마음이 이제 박세웅에게도 조금씩 들기 시작한다. 다년계약으로 선수로서의 전성기를 롯데에서 보낼 그가 롯데에게 우승을 가져다주길, 그리고 그가 반드시 동료들과 우승반지를 손에 얻길 간절히 바란다.

대장이 너에게 쓴 편지대로 너는 한국 최고의 우완 투수다. 너는 팀을 승리로 이끌 수 있고 또한 승리를 얻을 자격이 있다. 올시즌 아직 절반이 남았지만 내 모든 마음을 바쳐 너의 호투와 롯데의 승리를 바란다. 그리고 가장 중요한 것. 바로 다치지 않고 건강하게 오래오래 이 팀에서 야구하길 간절히 바라본다.

사랑하고 아낀다, 세웅아. 이번 시즌 너의 새로운 터닝 포인트기 되길 오늘도 이렇게 기도하며 롯데와 너를 응원한다.

you stood in the middle of the pitcher's mound, dominant hand gripping on the baseball as you had the whole arena cheering you on. they had asked you, a j-pop idol, to do the ceremonial first pitch for the game of the yomiuri giants against the chiba lotte marines.

you waved at the people in the stands before getting into position. you stared at the person in front of you, the catcher, a man with jet-black hair who had the name giants written in front of his broad chest. it was ken sato.

you shaked your head lightly to push away the thoughts of the smirk that he had as he waited for you to pitch. you took a deep breath in, drowning out the cheers of the audience. you maintained eye contact with ken sato and raised your leg, before throwing the ball at his direction. it did not reach him.

nonetheless, the cheers from the stadium were louder than ever, some whistles were heard while you turned around from the catcher with your face in your hands out of embarrassment. the baseball players from both teams seemed to find your failed pitch amusing, cheeky smiles visible on their faces.

"hey," you felt someone tap you from behind. you turned around, your hair touching his chest with how close he was. you looked up to ken sato, who was merely inches away from you, smiling down at you. "i think you dropped this?" he teased, and you only whined as you took the ball, taking a few steps away from him and playfully throwing it at his chest, making him laugh as it bounced to the ground.

after going back to the stands and being mercilessly teased by your members, you put your yomiuri giants cap back on. you looked down at the on-going game unfolding, and ken sato was now the pitcher. the jumbotron followed him and his every move, and unexpectedly, ken sato had his stare to where you were seated and used his fingers to point at his eyes, then to you, gesturing you to look at how it's done.

the jumbotron now zoomed in on your face, making the crowd erupt into screams. you scrunched your nose and stuck your tongue at him then looking into the camera and with a sweet smile.

구승민을 아끼는 이유

어떤 롯데팬들은 구승민을 그저 스찌, 운 좋은 셋업맨, 최악의 필승조...로 여긴다. 현재 롯데 자이언츠 통산 최다 홀드 기록은 구승민이 가지고 있는데 대부분이 시즌 후반부에 쌓은 홀드라는 점과 셋업맨치고는 높은 whip, 당장 내가 생각해도 떠오르는 그가 날려 먹은 경기들... (양상문 4점줘 경기는 사실 구승민의 아주 훌륭한 빌드업이 있었다...) 그럼에도 구승민이란 선수를 결국 좋아할 수밖에 없는 이유들이 있다.

그는 이승엽의 400호 홈런 허용투수다. 대한민국 최고의 타자 중 한 명인 이승엽의 400호 홈런 영상은 결국 구승민이 던진 공에서 시작한다. 그러나 대선배이자 어마어마한 명성의 선수를 상대로 승부를 건 용기가 좋았다. 어차피 투수라는 포지션은, 가장 높은 곳에 서서 팀의 승리를 이끌어야 하는 그 포지션은 역설적으로 상대에게 점수를 주는 포지션이다. 투수가 아무리 잘 던진다고 하더라도 그는 득점을 올릴 수 없으며 심지어 잘 던진 공도 때론 홈런이 되어 팀을 패배하게 만들기도 한다. 이러한 아이러니를 견뎌야 하는 것이 투수의 숙명. 이제 구승민은 이승엽에게 400호 홈런을 허용한 투수가 아니라 롯데 자이언츠의 필승조로 여겨진다. 투수의 숙명을 이해하고 꿋꿋하게 공을 던지는 선수가 바로 구승민이라서 그래서 좋아한다.

그는 대졸에 하위라운드 픽이었고 대학생 시절에 내야수에서 투수로 포지션을 변경했다. 보통 좀 한다 하는 아마추어 선수들은 바로 고졸 신인으로 데뷔하니 어떻게 보면 재능이 부족한 경우일 수 있다. 그렇지만 본인이 사랑하는 야구를 계속하고 싶어서 포지션을 변경해가며 노력한 끝에 결국 만 28세에 프로 1군의 주전이 되었다. 지루할 정도로 반복적이며 외로운 싸움에서 이겨낸 선수를 어떻게 사랑하지 않을 수 있을까.

그러나 불펜 투수는 결국 소모품이다. 늦은 나이에 프로 1군 주전이 된 선수들을 그만큼 더 경기에서 보고 싶은 나에게 이는 매우 슬픈 사실이다. 본인은 아직 젊고 불펜 투수는 부르면 바로 나가야 하는 보직이라고 말해서 더 슬프다. 올시즌 롯데 불펜의 역사를 새로 쓴 선수가 이렇게 흔들리는 걸 보고 싶지 않다. 구승민이 오래오래 이 팀의 필승조로 남아주길 바라는 마음이 그저 욕심인걸까. 그가 올해 새로 쌓은 롯데 계투진의 역사를 조금 더 오래 이어가길 그리고 그 역사에서 롯데의 영광의 순간이 있길 매일 바란다. 언젠가 구승민의 기록을 깰 선수가 나타나길 기다리면서 그때까진 구승민이 오래오래 롯데의 승리를 지켜주길.
