Louis-Ernest Barrias (1841-1905) - La Nature se devoilant devant La Science (Nature revealing herself before Science)
Gilt bronze, marble, and lapis lazuli. Executed c.1905.
29 inches, 73.6 cm high. Estimate: US$30,000-50,000.
Sold Christie’s, New York, 15 Oct 2021 for US$68,750 incl B.P.
Cast by the Susses Frères foundry of Paris, it also replicated this version, in an earlier stage of her divestment, in various sizes, media combinations, and editions.
In Egyptology, the scarab beetle was seen as a symbol of renewal and rebirth. A scarab amulet was placed on the heart to protect it on the journey to the afterlife. The heart was the only organ to be left in the body when it was mummified, because it was believed that the heart stored the thoughts and memories of an individual needed in the hereafter.
