“Ma?”

A small voice came from outside her tent. Her small clock — a beautiful keepsake — told her it was around midday. She placed down her quill beside the parchment, and beckoned her son in.

It was nice to have the company, even at an unusual time. But as soon as Bdubs ducked through the door, the reason for his early visit became apparent immediately.

Vibiana’s warm smile creased into concern. He was muddied, miserable; clothes slightly torn and tears brimming his eyes. He shuffled over to her, sitting beside her in silence.

“What’s wrong, sweetie?” she inquired lightly (treating him with more gentleness than his father ever would). “Are you supposed to be at training?”

Bdubs looked to the floor. “Mom, am I weak?”

Vibriana put a hand on his. “Of course not!” she assured, a gentle inflection in her voice, “Why would you think that, bumble bee?”

(She already knew why.)

Her son swallowed. He was trying to fight back the tears, she realised with a pain in her heart.

“Father told me so,” he mumbled, “I told him I don’t want to learn to fight because the other boys are mean and I don’t like learning to hurt things, really. And he told me…” he paused; sniffing, peering up at his mother through teary eyes. She was looking at him worriedly. “He- he told me that I was a coward anyway. He told me that I was the weakest fighter in the whole tribe and that I should be ashamed…”

There was a pause. Vibriana pulled Bdubs into a hug; letting him weep into her shoulder. Sore, over-trained arms gently squeezed her in return.

“You have nothing to be ashamed of, Bdubs,” she whispered, “Please remember that I am proud of you.”

Bdubs nodded against her. Her tent felt like home to him, much more so than the cold, damp boys’ tent ever would be.

“Does Father love me?” he asked, abruptly.

Vibriana’s breath hitched. She knew Barlock had a preference for his first son; he outright admitted it. Escpecially to her, when Bdubs was supposed to be her one redeeming quality. But he ended up like her. And not like him.

She was glad Bdubs didn’t end up like his father, if she was honest.

But maybe then Barlock would be less harsh to him — if he saw a reflection of himself.

“Your father…” she began, gazing down at his deep brown eyes, much like her own. “Your father has a very particular way of… I’m sure he does love you — really — it’s… it’s just-“

“It’s just that he wants me to be more like Bat.” Bdubs looked away, numbed.

Vibriana hugged him closer, picking up something small and shiny beside her. A distraction.

“Do you know what this is, Bdubs?” she asked, turning the golden disc over in her hands.

He shook his head, taking it from her and inspecting it curiously.

“It’s a clock,” she explained, smiling at her son’s curiosity, “It tells the time. I brought it here from my home, in Timre.”

Bdubs hummed. “Did loads of people have clocks in Timre?”

“Most people, yes. There was a huge one on the bank building which told everybody what time it was… Very useful — beautiful too… I wish I could take you…”

Bdubs sighed, content. A fleeting moment of tranquility, in his days of tireless training. In moments like this, Vibriana finally felt less alone.

But like all moments, this wouldn’t last.

The door was ripped open, practically shaking the tent’s walls.

“YOU COWARD!” a deep voice bellowed, stomping towards the trembling boy with heavy boots. “How dare you disobey me and miss your training?”

Vibriana hopelessly pulled her son closer to her, and he buried himself into her shoulder. “Barlock,” she begged, “Leave him be.”

Barlock effortlessly shoved her to the side, before grabbing Bdubs by the hair and yanking him to a standing position. “I suggest you stay out of this, Vibriana,” he warned, tone soft and dangerous.

Bdubs wailed. “Dad-“

“Shut up!” Barlock turned his attention to his son, spotting a glint of gold in his hand. He grabbed his wrist firmly, prying his fingers open until the clock clattered to the ground.

All was silent as Barlock picked it up, inspecting it.

“You are infecting my son with your sorcery,” he hissed, glaring at Vibriana, “I am not blind.”

Vibriana hung her head, trying to hide her tears from Bdubs. “I- It’s just a clock, Barlock, ple-“

She was cut off by a sickening crunch. She looked up. The poor clock lay smashed on the floor, hands twitching. A boot came down on it, again, and again, and again; until it spluttered its last tick.

Vibriana stared at it, it’s golden casing mangled, glass strewn around it.

Bdubs tried to reach out for his mother, but was tugged back.

“You, boy, are coming with me.”

Bdubs sobbed. “No…”

But it was hopeless. Bdubs was dragged away, leaving Vibriana alone again.

Soon, her son was nothing more than a voice outside.

To no ones surprise but my own, this got out of hand... but I like it and I'm happy with it so no regrets!

AP test season was stressful. Ricky knew that. He knew it because he watched his classmates freak out for weeks before the tests even happened, stressing over DBQs and 3s versus 4s and other things that Ricky, a proud member of the ‘on-level’ classes, didn’t understand. Ricky didn’t do advanced classes and he was never as grateful for that fact as he was when he witnessed several near tears because of the stress.

Junior year was shaping up to be even worse because there were more AP classes available for his friends to take and… well… thanks to theater, he now had more friends to watch suffer. When it was just him, Nini, and Big Red, it wasn’t fun, but they survived because Nini was the only one taking AP classes, so the secondhand stress was minimal. But now that he had to see more people go through it, it was worse.

So bad, in fact, that Miss Jenn ended rehearsal early because… well, honestly because Ashlyn was so stressed about her three AP tests the following week that she yelled at Seb, who burst into tears and there was no coming back from that. Not today, anyway. But she claimed it was a ‘mental health day’ and sent everyone home to relax.

EJ in particular was looking so dead on his feet that Miss Jenn made him sit down while everyone packed up their things and called Ricky over.

“Ricky, honey, is there any way you could take EJ home?” she asked him, looking concerned.

“…uh...” Ricky glanced at EJ, who had dark circles under his eyes and was slumped in his seat.

“Miss Jenn, I’m fine. I promise.” EJ assured her, looking slightly to the right of where Miss Jenn was standing. “I’m good to drive home.”

“Honey, I’m not sure you’re good to walk to the car, let alone operate it.” She told him, giving him a pat on the shoulder. Then she looked back at Ricky, expectantly.

“Sure?” Ricky shrugged. Big Red was taking Ashlyn home and it’d be easy enough to skate from wherever EJ lived to his apartment.

“Great.” Miss Jenn smiled at him before turning back to EJ, who’s eyes were half-closed. “EJ, sweetie, Ricky’s going to drive you home.”

EJ’s eyes flew open. “You want me to trust Bowen with my car?”

“I think right now, we all trust Ricky with your car more than you,” Miss Jenn said firmly, helping EJ stand. “Ricky, he’s all yours.”

Oh goody, Ricky thought idly, trying to guide the half-dead senior through the school. It was a little like herding a drunk cat. EJ was incapable of walking in straight line and somehow managed to bump into almost every person in the hall, despite it being after school hours and the hallways being mostly deserted. Finally, Ricky got him loaded into the passenger seat of EJ’s car, making sure his seatbelt was done correctly, before getting into the driver’s seat. EJ’s car was so fancy it had a GPS built in, so Ricky made it start directing him to the Caswell’s house.

They rode in almost silence until Ricky glanced over at EJ while stopped at a traffic light, expecting to see the senior passed out, but instead, found him furiously going through flashcards.

“EJ, what are you doing?” Ricky asked quietly.

“Studying.” He grunted back, not glancing away from his flashcards.

They drove in silence a bit more before turning onto the Caswell’s street.

“How much sleep did you get last night?” Ricky asked, almost afraid of the answer.

“I didn’t.” EJ said. “Too much material to go through.”

Ricky pulled into the driveway; a plan half-formed.

EJ was so out of it that he didn’t even notice when Ricky got out of the car and followed him into the house. EJ collapsed on a couch, still shuffling through his flashcards. Ricky wandered around the house till he found the kitchen and put his plan into motion. The Caswell kitchen was immaculate and Ricky almost felt bad going through it, but he was a man on a mission and would not be deterred. They had a fancy electric hot water kettle that Ricky got going before hunting down tea and a mug. It took a few tries to find, but he managed it. He put the teabag and hot water in the mug and made his way back to where EJ was going through flashcards so quickly, Ricky was sure he wasn’t even seeing them.

Ricky put the tea on the side table next to EJ before spotting a thick blanket across the room and went and grabbed it.

“Lie down.” Ricky commanded, walking back over to EJ.

“I beg your pardon?” EJ asked, finally looking up from his flashcards.

"You have to rest and I knew you wouldn't go to sleep willingly, so I brought you some chamomile tea and a blanket. Twenty minutes of shut-eye, okay?"

“Ricky – I can’t,” EJ tried to argue but Ricky wasn’t having it.

“You can. You look terrible and there’s no way you can do well on the test if you don’t sleep.”

“Is Ricky Bowen giving me studying advice?” EJ asked, incredulous.

“Yeah, we’ve hit rock-bottom,” Ricky laughed. “Now, sleep!”

“Yessir,” EJ said, keeling over onto the couch. He curled his legs up so he was basically in a ball, not even taking up the full couch, and closed his eyes. Ricky put the blanket over him and plopped down on the couch near EJ’s head. EJ burrowed into the blanket until all that was visible was his hair.

“You’re gonna stay till I wake up, right?” EJ asked, voice muffled by the blanket.

“Do you want me to?” Ricky asked, suddenly feeling uncertain. EJ nodded, slow and determinedly. “Then I will.”

“Thanks,” came EJ’s muffled reply.

The Danger Begins s1 ep1

I’m so glad I decided to rewatch this because it made me so happy!!!! (also, to keep you guys from getting uber annoyed with me, i’m just gonna lb on one big post like this from now on lolol)

first off

s1 henry was the cutest thing to ever exist. ever. my heart couldn’t take it bc he’s so grown now but in that first ep he’s this adorable little baby chick ajdksjslk

it was so incredible to see Siren on my screen. Like, within thirty seconds BAM there she was. i felt blessed, like she blessed my laptop

PIPER. MY OVERDRAMATIC DAUGHTER. I miss her “I am NOT okay!!!” catchphrase akdjlsj 

her “so we’re living like animals now” reply to being told to wait for her video to load---same girl, same.

Henry at 13 was a million times more proactive about the whole job search than I have ever been and I’m 22 sksjskjsk

his whole “I’m not good at anything. I’m a big ball of average”---I feel that lol

“No special skills needed.” “That’s me!!” 

okay one of Char’s first lines was “One day when you two are cleaning my pool bc you failed this algebra test...” and it doesn’t get more iconic than that

Ray was all “I’m getting old. I can’t do this forever.” Two things: 1) RAY DID YOU JUST REFER TO YOURSELF AND OLD IN THE SAME SENTENCE??? 2) why is this never mentioned again??? Like, Ray got a sidekick to pass the mantle onto someone younger to keep protecting Swellview when he’s done. We’re like 4 yrs down the line, and they haven’t even hinted towards CM retiring??? (I know that would mean the end of the show, but they could at least bring it up every now and then)

OK. hated the toddler then. hate him now. 

Props to the props department (ha ha get it???) for all the junk in the store. It’s all so strange and doesn’t make sense and fits the show so well (also it seems like each ep has diff junk??? that’s impressive)

“They seem like nice kids.” “Yeah, they’re names are Jasper x Charlotte. I’ve known them ever since--” “Get rid of them.” “I’ll get rid of them.”

OMG I FORGOT ABOUT HEN’S HORRIBLE TEST WARDROBE. IMAGINE IF THEY HAD KEPT ONE OF THOSE IDEAS AKSJLKSJ (there really wasn’t any need for a whole test wardrobe tho--just style an outfit to fits Ray’s. His obvs works out well for him) (I know that’s what they ended up doing lolol)

Okay, Ray’s “Oh man. I ate a lot of fruit.” line KILLS. ME. bc when i first watched this ep, every time the scene changed and Ray was shown w/ a diff fruit, I was like, “Why...is he eating so much fruit????” bc they’re all diff and he even eats a whole pineapple--outside peel and all. BUT I WAS THINKING IT AND THEN HE SAID IT AND IT MADE IT ONE MILLION TIMES FUNNIER.

LIL BB HEN IN HIS SUIT FOR THE FIRST TIME. I CRY. HE’S SO TINY AND HAPPY

I just want everyone to know that s1 Henry is the cutest. I already said it, but I’m saying it again. 

Henry panicking bc he doesn’t want C x J to keep reading about KD but he also doesn’t know what to do so he just throws a glass and smacks C’s phone out of her hand and clean across the room ajskjslk SAME

Jace was so.....twitchy in the first two seasons. He’s really mellowed---which I understand it happens when you get older---but it’s just so funny to see this little bean with all his crazy expressions and loud outbursts and rapid movements lolol

“The toddler’s men stole 5,000 packages of diapers. Can you guess why?” “Uhhhh???” “To bombard the diapers with radioactive zenite particles.” “.....I would not have guessed that.”

also Ray getting lower to the ground as he talks and Hen just following is so funny to me. Ray was really extra in that first ep 

RAYMOND MANCHESTER HOW DARE YOU GET MAD AT HEN FOR WANTING TO GO TO HIS BFF’S BDAY PARTY INSTEAD OF FIGHTING CRIME. HE IS 13. AND YOU WOULD LATER CALL HIM UP WITH THE EMERGENCY ALARM PAST 12 AT NIGHT FOR CORNDOGS, SO I DON’T WANT TO HEAR IT.

“Okay. Okay. It’s cool. You go to Jasper’s party. I’ll handle the toddler by myself. Don’t worry about it.” “Are you sure?” “Yeah. I’ve battled the toddler alone before--almost killed me, but whatever.” and u still want to take a 13 yr old out there??? Ray.

“How do I get you out of there?” “I don’t know. This is the first time I’ve been stuck in a baby bouncer hovering over a bottomless ball pit.” CALL SUPERHEROES OUT, RAY. all these extravagant traps they’re caught in and they just....know what to do??? Doubtful. (bottomless pits are impossible, but you know lol)

that spitting device is the literal WORST thing i have ever seen. i freaking hate spit.

God, i wish the toddler had stayed tf down there in that ball pit. i wish that bottle had blown him to the center of the earth. (sorry i just really don’t like him akdjslj)

Ray shielding Henry was <33333 (it would be really messed up if he hadn’t considering he’s indestructible, but I like to think that he chose to)

AJKSJSKLSKSJLK HENRY’S FACE WHEN RAY TOLD HIM “GOOD JOB” WAS SOOOOOOO PRECIOUS. He looked so shocked. Like, “CM thinks I did a good job????” 

It’s like, Henry’s second day on the job, and they’re just namedropping right and left. Why be careful???? It’s not like they have secret identities or anything.....(they steady use their real names. i guess they don’t really have to worry. C must be the only smart person in Swellview bc no one else seems capable of figuring it out. I mean, not even his parents recognized him ajksjslk)

If you need any proof that Ray is a good guy, just watch this ep. His willingness to show up to J’s party despite only knowing Hen for like two days is a solid testament to his character. This is the Ray I know and love.

I’m glad I watched this. I’ve forgotten most of the earlier episodes which is a crime because they’re so good. It was hard to see Jace so little when he’s so grown now!!!!! My heart couldn’t take it. But lil Henry is precious and I love him. Stay tuned for more rewatches!!!! xoxoxox
