I think when people describe dark hallways or all-grey office cubicles as “liminal,” they’re using it as a synonym for creepy, which is not really accurate. What’s being reached for is a sense of dislocation, of being in a place that is not meant for you or is otherwise hostile to you in some way. “Liminal” is limited in its ability to describe those feelings, because the word is typically meant to refer to a place that exists only to get you somewhere else (like an airport, for example, or an interstate highway). “Liminal” isn’t synonymous with “a place of horror,” but I think it’s become that in the tumblr lexicon.
I think a much more robust term for what people are trying to describe is ontological (in)security. Ontological security in geographic scholarship means “a confidence that the world exists as it appears to be.” To give a very basic example, there are handles on doors because the function of a door is to act as a gateway to another space, and the handle is there to open that gateway. You trust that doors with handles are meant to be open and stepped through, and you also trust that door handles will always be placed at a standing person’s waist height - if you’ve ever seen a character try to open a door that leads nowhere in a story, it’s playing with your ontological security. Likewise, you see a flight of stairs and understand implicitly that it exists to facilitate pedestrian traffic to and from a specific place. It’s not a place to have a party with your friends, and you wouldn’t think to go to a stairwell to socialise.
To be ontologically insecure, on the other hand, is to exist in a place that is built for purposes that are not available to you. This is most commonly used in disability scholarship to refer to inaccessible entrances or stairwells - these things exist for able-bodied people only, and the structure of the built environment is now acting as a mechanism to divide people into groups who can use the space and groups who cannot. This is part of the way that ableism essentialises disability, which is then reproduced in the built environment - urban structures are taken as neutral, and if you can’t navigate them effectively, something is wrong with you individually (which of course is not true).
But this idea can be deployed for a variety of contexts - suburbs once built for the wealthy car-driving middle class typically do not have sidewalks in them. And now in many places in North America, suburbs are being inhabited by much poorer families (who are much less likely to own a vehicle), who are being driven out of the city core because now that same wealthy middle class has decided a condo is more fashionable than a detached house. This leaves people to live in places that aren’t built “for them,” to walk in the middle of roads or on lawns because there’s no space for them to walk, forcing them into hostile situations to either be hit by cars or yelled at by neighbours for walking on their grass. These spaces produce ontological insecurity, a sense that you are inhabiting a place that is not meant for you, and because of this you are frequently made less safe as a result.
This is where the critique that cities are structurally ableist, or racist, or misogynistic comes from. Urban environments are usually built by the ruling class, whose interests and aesthetic sensibilities get reproduced in the roads they build and houses they erect, and if you don’t happen to fit the profile of the ruling class (ie most people), some parts of a city are always going to be less safe for you. This is why in extremely spread-out, low density cities (LA for example), public transit is difficult to implement on a structural level (on top of all the political pushback), because these spaces are structured in such a way to be hostile to certain modes of travel or behaviour (eg any mode of transit that isn’t a car). They are built for a specific ideal archetype of person, and if you don’t fit into that, you’re much less safe and much less secure.
So if you want to use this in fantasy settings or horror or whatever, you need to approach the built environment as a historical process the same way that a government or law is. Office spaces are not “liminal,” but they can be sites of horror because their physical structure compels certain modes of social behaviour, and trying to work against that grain can make you feel “out of place” - i.e., ontologically insecure.

I also think that there's a lot of ways that high population leads to poor quality of life (e.g., child neglect, noise, trash/sewage) and harms women (e.g., harassment/violence on transit, being forced to live with men). I really appreciate your well-informed response.
Most high-consumption countries already have very low birth rates. I think that's a major reason the US government allowed states to ban abortions. It's becoming more and more difficult diplomatically for the US to exploit other nations. And so the US needs to rely on exploiting domestic poverty more and more. That's why they need to grow the wealth gap and shrink the middle class. And one fast way to do that is to take away women's reproductive health care options.
Reproductive health care is very important because it closes wealth gaps.
I don't agree that density leads to child neglect. Car-oriented suburban and rural sprawl leads to fractured communities and long commutes. That takes several hours out of family life every day.
The city I live in has 9,000 people per square mile and no trash or sewage problems. I lived in Tokyo for a month where it's 16,000 people per square mile. No trash or sewage problems there either.
I have experienced no difference in my personal safety whether I'm in rural or urban areas. I personally feel safest in a city because I'm never alone. Density doesn't mean it's just all unstable people living together. The majority of people in a dense area are regular stable people like you and me. If I need help, I can trust a stranger walking their dog at a park. But I can't trust a stranger driving by on a rural road. But that's just a feeling I have because I was born in a city.
You can point to this or that city and say it's dangerous or has poor waste management. But that doesn't mean density leads to danger and poor waste management. I can point to rural areas that have high crime and poor waste management, too. So it's a moot point.
Cities don't force you to live with men. Cities are just a place where people can live efficiently.
Female separatist settlements in the woods are still American settler culture. They still rely on the "American dream" of individual enterprise and self-reliance. Well, the truth is, human self-reliance is a myth. We can either live densely and help each other, or we can live alone and rely on machines. Machines like cars and extra refrigerators and spare generators and guns. Rural living requires quite a few machines just in case there's an emergency. You're alone and a long way from help and services. So you need to be machine-reliant. And that takes a lot of energy.
In order for rural life to be efficient, it needs to be dense. Condo buildings with goods and services on the ground floor. A hub of human life. No need to drive long distances several times a day. No need for 100 people to disrupt natural ecosystems in 100 different ways. 100 people can live together very efficiently in a human habitat.
The area where I'm from, native people traditionally lived densely in longhouses. It's efficient and comfortable, so why not? Why risk living far apart?
The real odd thing is that every settler needed his own ranch. Why did they each need to claim acres of land as their private property? I don't know. Maybe they never got along with each other. Out here in the west, settlers' inability to share space shaped the fabric of western American society. And car culture just reinforced that fabric. But there's no reason we need to keep living like that.

As B.C. moves forward with a housing plan that would effectively end single-family zoning, municipal leaders have voiced both praise and concern over how the sweeping policy might shape the fabric of their communities.
On Monday, B.C. Premier David Eby and Housing Minister Ravi Kahlon unveiled the Homes for People plan, a multi-billion-dollar effort to construct more homes as quickly as possible in an attempt to build our way out of the housing crisis.
As part of the plan, the government will introduce provincial legislation this fall to allow three to four units on a traditional single-family detached lot, with additional density permitted in areas well served by transit. It's a strategy that many jurisdictions across the world, including Oregon, California, and Auckland, New Zealand, have adopted as a way to gently bump up housing density in their communities.
Langley City Mayor Nathan Pachal says the policy has the potential to be transformative in creating more affordable housing options. "We know traditionally throughout Metro Vancouver and even across B.C., the largest percentage of urban land for housing is dedicated to single detached homes," Pachal told CBC News. "What this should allow is gentle density."
Langley City, a municipality east of Vancouver, is about 10 square kilometers in size, and 80 percent of the population lives in townhouses, condos, or rowhomes. Pachal says the other 20 percent lives in single-family detached homes that are taking up about 50 percent of the land base.
In Victoria, the city council has already passed a policy that will allow up to 12 units on certain lots. Vancouver is also seeking public input on a plan to increase its "missing middle" housing supply by allowing multiplexes in low-density neighborhoods across the city.
"It's fine to say you want a lot more dwelling units, but do you have the sewers and the pipes and the water supply - everything that it takes?" said Brodie. "Every time we have a rezoning, we have a traffic study to assume that traffic will take care of itself regarding the need for other services, the police, the fire, the libraries, the community centers?"
"What about the character of the various neighborhoods?" While specifics on the legislation are yet to be unveiled, researchers in Oregon say the policy is unlikely to yield a dramatic increase in total units.
In 2019, the state passed a bill that allows duplexes to be built in areas zoned for single-family housing and up to four homes on almost any residential lot in cities of a certain size. In 2020, officials in Portland introduced a law allowing up to six units with strict affordability requirements.
The zoning took effect in August 2021, and the net result has been about an additional 200 to 300 homes per year in Portland, according to Michael Andersen, a senior housing researcher at the non-profit Sightline Institute in Portland.
"Middle-income housing is not a silver bullet, and anyone who claims that two, three, or four fourplexes are enough to bring housing costs down and house everyone who needs it… is mistaken," he said.
Anderson says the policy has, so far, led to a gradual change in single-family neighborhoods, but it will enable more lots to house more residents as buildings reach the end of their life cycles and are replaced.
"The big vision is that we're increasing the number of options that anybody has for how to live," he said.
