For the 'Disrupt' brief, I wanted to do the project around the theme of my family. There are plenty of stories and tales about the history of my family, both adventure and loss.
The story I have chosen is about my family home back in Kilkee, a small hamlet called Moyasta.
The story is known as 'McGrath of Moyasta Shore' and details the eviction of my 3 times great grandfather and his family by the Vandeleur family from Kilrush.
The results was the eviction of my ancestors, arrest of his son the 'McGrath' this story focuses on and the passing of mother Bridget McGrath.
Despite all that, in the aftermath of the evictions and the Vandeleurs leaving Ireland alltogether, my family managed to purchase the house and remain there to this day.
For the 'Disrupt' I want to depict the story that was told to me everytime we went to Kilkee and pass by the house, the heroism and resilence, but also the pain and loss that came with it.
Sometimes you can get lost in the corridors of consciousness and get into very unpleasant rooms. Prayers can save someone, understanding the moment that this all happens only in his head will help someone. But we must always remember - there is not only one way out, there are many of them.
I have become more and more fascinated with origami design and had attempted it in an intuitive manner only to be met with frustration and disappointment.
While researching more methodical ways of doing so, I came accross professor Erik Demaine‘s lectures on YouTube. The next day I bought myself an overpriced notebook and began to study his lectures and to log my experiments. I am very excited about this new study.
First day at LSAD painting elective with 1st years. Work carried out: Creating 3D structure on wall using paper. Received two briefs with instructions to analyse Art magazines in the Library and artists. During lunch break I went to the Library to find the magazines and become familiar with the area. Completed 3D paper structure. Skills used: Research skills, construction, design and understanding concept. Skills learned: Working in a team, paper construction, how to research art magazines Personal work related encounters: I discovered that working in a team, there can be people that don't really want to work, I used humour and encouragement to help activate support. The language used in the briefs and speaking to the teacher's was at times over my head. I asked questions when I didn't understand and looked up words on Google to help further my understanding. I was very tired towards the end of the day so in future will be mindful of this and take breaks when needed. However it was my first day and everything all new but I found everyone I met, in the canteen, library and classroom helpful and friendly. A great day overall
So for the final pitch of the project, I want to create a 3D models of the characters and I had the idea after I remembered hearing about the passing of Kent Melton earlier on in the year.
So I wanted to practise creating 3d reference of the characters in our storyboard pitch.
Character Models
Obvs not as smooth, would definitely readjust the skeletons I made as they were a bit large for the size I had planned and the clay was a too thin and cracked, espically around the torso.
This image was taken for a 24hr project we were assigned last week, within this brief we were asked to focus on the architecture of the LSAD, clare st building and ourselves. From height, smell, texture, colour etc. Where and how you fit/ react to the architecture? I approached this project by looking at the 1st year sculpture and combined media studio that I am situated in. From being in this studio 5 days a week usually, it didnt take much researching when gathering materials and coming up with ideas it was almost an instant instinct. I built a box that was slightly taller and slightly wider than me so that i could fit, barely but could still fit. This is because in my studio I feel movement is restricted. Inside this 'box' I lined the back wall with styrofoam to act as a heat insulator then with clingfilm inside and out to act as another source of heat insulation and to function as a suffocator to say i feel claustraphobic in this room. When i accomplished making the main form of the box i got a plastic bowl and filled it with boiling water, I then stood inside the box for a period of time untill i sweated and sweated as this is what usually happens on a daily basis in our studio as heating is always on consistently. I wasnt trapped inside of this box the front of the box acted as a door but was more so a curtain or flap as leaving and entering the studio is never restricted. Its generally quite a carefree enviroment.
Takahata Isao was my greatest inspiration for the animation I am working on. Specially the movies: The Tale of Princess Kaguya and My Neighbours the Yamadas. They are both very character centred and the design choices remind me of watercolour sketches.
I wish to employ the dreamy qualities of watercolour washes and serene, quiet environments similar to Takahata-san’s works in my animation.
