Part 1 from Ultimate Guitar (my longtime friend Amber Ferrano shared the link in October; I finally read it & wanted to share) Jerry Cantrell Says Layne Staley Didn't Want to Use His Ideas on Alice in Chains' 'Dirt', One of the most distinctive and instantly recognizable elements of Alice in Chains has always been the band's vocal harmonies between Jerry Cantrell and Layne Staley (and, later, William DuVall). Coming from the grunge scene, which was bubbling with powerful frontmen the likes of Kurt Cobain and Chris Cornell, Alice in Chains managed to have not one, but two charismatic lead singers that would carry the band's And while the group's discography has managed to stay pretty much unbeatable, their 1992 genre-defining masterpiece "Dirt" marked the moment when Staley also came into his own regarding songwriting duties, previously taken over by Cantrell entirely. In a new interview with Billboard, drummer Sean Kinney recalled how two of the most iconic moments of the record came from the singer's reluctant ideas: "Layne started playing guitar more and he had these riffs, and I don't know if he really wanted to use them with the band. I think he was thinking about some other shit. But I remember just us thinking of how cool they were and wanting to jam on them. I thought I’d share a photo of the chart Alice In Chains used to name what eventually became their self-titled album. This is from the 2018 Popup Museum AiC put on over a 2 day period right before the release of Rainier Fog in Seattle. This was held at the old Crocodile venue location here in Seattle. I would absolutely encourage you to go to it if AiC puts on this event in your city. I could’ve spent a week going through it and still not get through it all. Many of us got to talk with Susan Silver, Sean Kinney & even Mike Inez. I think the majority of those who follow our page know that I’ve been an avid collector of all things Alice In Chains. I’ve been collecting items for over 30 years. If it isn’t magazines, gig posters, radio shows or promo pics, it’s CD’s from every country. This includes the CD singles. Several years ago I ordered a brand new CD from Australia so I could add it to my collection. As you can see I received it exactly how it’s pictured. It’s still sealed and sits on my AiC dedicated bookcase. I thought it was worth sharing on todays 27 year anniversary. I’s not everyday you receive the inside on the outside. This would be considered a misprint and also valuable. WOW! What an incredible month this has been celebrating the 30th anniversary of Dirt! • I hope I’ve relayed how much this album means to me, the relevancy of those lyrics and dark, brooding, gut-punching music still exists today. To me, this album was probably the most important release of the 1990’s. And as much as I love each AiC album, it’s Dirt that made the most impact on me. At times, I felt the album explained my life. • It should be noted that the Dirt demos were actually recorded at @londonbridgestudio - with the late Rick Parashar and Alice producing and @davehillismusic as engineer. The demos are my favorite. • On August 5, 2022, Dirt was certified 5X Platinum by the RIAA. • In a retrospective review, Steve Huey of AllMusic said "Dirt is Alice in Chains' major artistic statement and the closest they ever came to recording a flat-out masterpiece. It's a primal, sickening howl from the depths of Layne Staley's heroin addiction, and one of the most harrowing concept albums ever recorded. • Michael Christopher of PopMatters praised the album saying "the record wasn't celebratory by any means – but you'll be hard pressed to find a more brutally truthful work laid down – and that's why it will always be one of the greatest records ever made. • I think the Dirt album has continued to reach people on an emotional level. In the beginning, I don’t think it was necessarily their intention to do so, but it’s still the bands most popular album. It disturbingly relates to all of us on some level. I’ve completed the Starr boxes. Wood burned the Starr name on the bottom. After that I painted the letters with purple texture paste; then added a green highlight color (Prima Sparks). To protect the bottoms, I used Mod Podge for Hard Coats. The boxes will go to Melinda and Gayle. Mike’s Sister & Mom. After this, I will start on a box that I knew I’d eventually be making. This one will go to the love of Mike’s life, Miranda. I already had everything ready to go. Box has been painted. • • Today, I’ll be making the candles for the annual gathering at the Seattle Center International Fountain. New box and progress on the second one. The 1st box is actually like a small catch-all; the kid got broken in transit. However, instead of throwing out the entire box, I decided to refurbish it. The theme is Vintage Epherma. This one will go to a wonderful lady and you’ve all seen her work; details to come on who ! • The 2nd pic is an update on the one I shared a few days ago with just the pics on it. It’s now been refurbished with elements. I still have quite a few things left to do. I do like how it’s coming along. One last bit of info: I printed out a bunch of Alice songs to place around the box. I’ll be using crafting tweezers to pick up and help me adhere to the box.
