blue nail polish | luca fantilli
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
luvhughes43 masterlist🌷
request: Hi, I have a request for Luca so reader and Luca are dating and the reader is getting her nails done and she comes back just in time for some big hockey game that Luca is playing in and after the game she really she shows him her nails, and they’re blue and yellow with his number painted on them and he’s just like totally awe of her. I just got my nails done, and this idea popped into my head in the chair. 😭😭😭
word count: 0.4k
when you walked into your nail appointment you had no clear idea of what you wanted to get done. however, as soon as you laid eyes on the blue and yellow polish - perfect matches for the michigan colours - you immediately knew what you had to do. plus, with your plans to meet Luca after tonight's game you knew that it would be the perfect surprise.
hours later, with your nails perfectly painted and the boys snagging another win, you wait for your boyfriend by his car.
“baby!” luca shouts as soon as he spots you, jogging up to meet you.
you smile into his quick kiss and let him drag you into a comforting hug. “how was your day?” luca asks, speaking into your hairline as he's reluctant to let you go.
you hum, “good. i got my nails done,”
Luca pulls away from you. “how much?”
“75” you reply before pulling my hands behind my back so luca has no chance at seeing them.
“I’ll transfer you later,” he replies, pulling me into another quick kiss. “can i see them?”
“you don’t have to transfer me,”
“i want too,” Luca laughs at your reaction and wraps his arms back around you. when you're once again pressed up against him he repeats, “can i see your nails”
you sheepishly pull away from him, “okay but if you don’t like them don’t make fun of me!”
“I would never-”
you flash your nails in front of your face and your boyfriend immediately pauses. “is that…” he starts but pauses, truly at a loss for words.
“do you like them?” you question, nervous now because of Lucas lack of words. your nails were a dark blue with maize detailing. little 63s adorning your middle fingers to represent your boys hockey number.
“is that my number?” Luca gasps, turning on his phone flashlight and pointing it at your nails. “this is sick,”
“i was worried you weren’t going to like them,” you giggle as you watch your boyfriend obsess over your acrylics.
“i love you so much,” Luca blurts out, shoving his phone back into his pocket and pulling you into a searing kiss. “like, that's so… cute? hot? I don't know, i love you,”
Luca starts pressing kisses all over your face just as some of the boys on his team start making their way deeper into the parking lot. “you lovebirds make me sick!” one of them shouted, and instead of replying Luca just presses another kiss to your lips.

this is me trying L. Fantilli
Tumblr media
Luca Fantilli x fem!reader
synopsis - You just want Luca to know that you're trying.
wc - 2.5k
contains - cursing, academic burnout (self reflection...), crying, not feeling good enough, reader has an older brother, um suggestiveness??? (reader makes one joke), that's it! LMK!
an - im so sorry i kept you guys waiting... but happy thanksgiving, forgive me im so thankful for you guys. this was a bit more self indulgent than my other fics... THIS WAS SO LATE BECAUSE i wrote 2000+ words then they didn't save and so i literally cried over it and couldn't write for the rest literal week whenever i came back to it i was upset, like i was that sad guys. and i really don't love this because it just isn't as perfect as the first one i wrote was. anyways hope you love this!
-
i've been having a hard time adjusting. i had the shiniest wheels, now they're rusting.
You were sick. Not like physical illness, go to the doctor and get medicine sick. You were sick of waking up every day, going to the same classes, eating the same food, coming home, sitting alone in your dorm, then falling asleep and doing it over again. But you couldn't afford to do anything else at the same time. If you wanted to get the grades you needed to pass your current classes, you were going to have to work your ass off.
You were always considered gifted. You took advanced classes all of high school, attending college-level courses in your junior year. Even in your freshman year at Umich, you passed with flying colors, but now, now it was different. You don't know why classes were so much harder now, and it was especially hard because everything had always been so easy.
Even with all of this, you had Luca. Luca had been your boyfriend since October of freshman year. He'd always stood by your side no matter what, but now it felt different. He'd never seen you like this, struggling so much with things you were known for being good at. You remember him telling you how proud he was when you had gotten a 98% on one of your final exams last year, you were worried he wouldn't be proud anymore.
As a child, you were conditioned into thinking that better grades meant better treatment from your parents. Your brother had been a star student always until he'd slacked off senior year and ended up going to a college he was way too smart for. When that happened, your parents decided you wouldn't be like your brother. You would go to a good school, and get good grades, and in exchange they would love you, at least that's how it felt.
i didn't know if you'd care if i came back, i have a lot of regrets about that.
All the love you'd ever known was for a price, your parents', your boyfriend's, even your brother's it was like you had to be good enough before they would consider you lovable.
You never felt this from Luca, but you never gave him a reason to think otherwise. You'd always been this smart girl for him, a girl he bragged about to his friends. The girl he could go to for help in classes.
You didn't mean to be pushing Luca away, but you were so stressed and didn't want to bring him into it.
I know I already said you weren't sick like an illness, but right now you felt gross. You were stuffy and coughing and had a pounding headache, but you had assignments due at 11:59 pm and they couldn't wait. It was 9:03 pm and it didn't look like you were gonna get any relief from class work for a while longer.
pulled the car off the road to the lookout. could've followed my fears all the way down.
You didn't even know you were crying until you saw tears fall onto your iPad screen, where you were currently writing notes for a quiz you had tomorrow. You felt completely helpless. You couldn't stop and let yourself wallow, because you had to get moving on your study guide.
You dropped your Apple Pencil and just buried your face in your hands, rubbing your eyes till you saw stars. Your pity party was interrupted by your phone ringing. Your phone was on your studying do not disturb so if someone's call was coming through it had to be Luca's.
You quickly tried to steady your breathing before swiping to answer the call.
"Hi?"
"Hey. So, what's with you totally skipping my game? You know that meant a lot to me."
Fuck. Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck. How did you forget? You were the worst girlfriend ever.
"Oh my God, Luca. I'm so fucking sorry, it completely slipped my mind, oh my God, I didn't even know. I had a really long day, baby, I'm so sorry."
You were trying not to cry even more, you didn't want Luca to think you were a crybaby. Crybaby. That's what your parents called you whenever you got like this, too much for them to love.
and maybe i don't quite know what to say,
Luca just sighed, upset. He was upset with you, and you couldn't fix it. You could hear rustling on Luca's end, and another voice. All of a sudden you were seventeen getting a call from your nineteen-year-old boyfriend while he cheated on you, while another girl laid with him.
but i'm here in your doorway.
You didn't think Luca would do that to you, you really knew he wouldn't. But that one part of you was just screaming that you'd proven yourself unworthy to him, that he was done.
i just wanted you to know,
"I just, I don't even know anymore. You haven't consistently talked to me in weeks, every time we do speak you're in your head, and you keep pushing things off and forgetting. I just don't know what I'm doing wrong here."
Fuck, you couldn't stop the floodgates now. You quickly sniffed, holding the phone away from you so he wouldn't hear, soaking the cuff of your sweatshirt sleeve with tears before trying to respond.
"No, no Luc, you're not doing anything wrong. The last month has just been tough, I just don't know how to tell you. I'm trying Luca, I am, and I'm sorry. I know it doesn't fix anything and you still have every right to be angry with me, I understand why-"
this is me trying.
"Hey, it's whatever, just don't worry about it."
No. No this couldn't happen like this. He couldn't be checking out of your relationship right now. You needed him, even if you didn't know how to tell him. You accidentally let out a whimper when you tried to speak, before shakily breathing a deep breath and trying again.
"No, it isn't. I'm not being good to you. I just- Fuck Luca I'm sorry I didn't mean to forget, and I'm not meaning to be such a bad girlfriend I just, there's just,"
"Just what?"
"I don't know how to tell you! I don't want you to think differently about me Luc. You've never seen me like this."
Your trauma was truly shining through, you were terrified of Luca thinking you weren't smart.
"Are you like uninterested now? You could just tell me, not lead me on! Not just ghost me!"
"No Luca! I love you so much, I'm in love with you. I just-"
You cut yourself off, letting out a stressed sigh, rubbing your eyes when you felt the tears prick in them.
i just wanted you to know,
You didn't know what to say, it was so complicated. Every time you ever tried to talk about this with your family they shut you down, told you you were wrong for feeling like you did, and you didn't want Luca to think those things too.
"I just can't do this stuff anymore,"
"What?"
this is me trying.
"I'm just not smart anymore, and everything is so hard. And I don't know how to talk to you about it 'cause I don't want you to think I'm not smart, but I don't think I am anymore."
"Oh, baby."
Luca was stunned, his girl was going through something and he was upset with her over a hockey game. He thought you were beginning to distance yourself from him because you started to be uninterested in him. He never would've assumed you were doing it because you were scared to talk to him. He never would've assumed you were scared he would think less of you.
"Hey, it's okay. Everything's gonna be alright, okay? How about I come over? We can talk more about everything and I know I'm not the brightest guy when it comes to all of your stuff but I could try to help. That okay, pretty?"
"Yes. Please, Angel. Need you right now."
"Okay, give me a couple minutes, I'll be right there. I love you, okay?"
"I love you, Luc."
Luca let you hang up, taking a deep breath and sitting for a moment just to take in what had just happened. He had a bad feeling in his stomach now, knowing how you were hurting. He quickly recovered and got up, putting his shoes and a hat on backward before leaving his dorm.
He walked fast through campus to get to your dorm building, the cold motivating him further. When he got to your dorm building, he quickly went up the stairs, taking two at a time, and to your room. You were in a single this year, so he wasn't worried about a roommate being bothered by his presence. He knocked on the decorated door gently, bouncing on his feet waiting for you.
they told me all of my cages were mental, so i got wasted like all my potential.
Luca could've sworn he felt his heart break when he saw your face, the exhaustion mixed with sadness wearing you down. He didn't say anything before jumping to wrap his arms around you, just holding you for a minute. You clung to him so tightly, you'd missed him so badly while digging yourself into a hole of isolation.
"Hi sweet girl."
You could've started crying again. He held you gently but firmly, and it was all you ever needed. You felt yourself relax for the first time in two and a half weeks.
and my words shoot to kill when i'm mad. i have a lot of regrets about that.
"Hi Luc"
You sniffled, and Luca just melted. He pulled away from you just a little, pulling his arms away so he could cradle your faces in his palms. You brought your hands up to rest on his wrists, rubbing your thumbs back and forth.
"I missed you, pretty."
You missed him like a little kid. But it was your fault you were ever apart.
i was so ahead of the curve, the curve became a sphere.
"I missed you. 'M so sorry I isolated myself from you, I'm so fucking stressed right now. Everything is hard and it's scary 'cause it's never been hard like this for me, and I-"
fell behind all my classmates and i ended up here,
"I know baby. It is scary. College is just scary. And you are like the smartest girl I think ever so I know it's like even scarier for you when things don't make sense quickly, but it's gonna be okay. Because you have your amazing, talented, stud of a boyfriend to help you."
pouring out my heart to a stranger. but i didn't pour the whiskey.
You gave him a look, laughing for the first time in many days.
"He is pretty amazing, and talented, and hot, isn't he?"
i just wanted you to know, that this is me trying. i just wanted you to know, that this is me trying.
He nodded reassuringly, before putting his hands on your hips and pushing you back into your room, closing your door behind him.
"Damn, you just got here."
"Shut the hell up."
You laughed as you climbed up onto your bed, pulling Luca up next to you after he took his shoes off.
at least i'm trying.
"So, about this class. What do we need to learn?"
You explained how tonight you only really needed to do two things, finish a paper that was 75% done, and do another assignment that if you could figure out how to understand the concept, would be done in no time. You both snuggled close together while looking at the paper, Luca helping you through sentences you got stuck on. You finished the paper quickly, then pulled up your notes for the concept of the other assignment.
and it's hard, to be at a party when i feel like an open wound. it's hard to be anywhere these days when all i want is you.
At one point Luca took your laptop to read through the notes so you just turned over and rested your head on his chest, before seeing his gorgeous hair covered by a stupid hat grabbing it off of him, and putting it on your bedside table.
"No hats in my room."
"What? Since when?"
"Since I want to see your pretty hair, not the maize and blue hat I see every other day."
Luca just laughed, shaking his head and running his non-scrolling hand down your back. Luca somehow understood the concept and reiterated it to you in a way that made everything click. He was your good luck charm, you knew it. Everything made sense with him.
you're a flashback, in a film reel, on the one screen in my town.
You made him lay on your chest with your laptop resting on his back while you completed the assignment. One hand was in his hair while the other was gliding across the keyboard. You finished it in 20 minutes. And your chest felt so much lighter after you hit the submit button.
You closed your laptop, sliding it onto the floor before putting both of your hands into Luca's hair.
"I knew you could do it, baby. You just needed someone to tell you that."
"I love you."
"I love you so much."
Luca's arms around your middle tightened, and he moved his head to look up at you.
"I know you feel like you have to be this perfect person, baby, but I need you to know you don't have to do that for anyone, especially me. Because you are everything, and I can't take care of you if you're scared to talk to me about how you're feeling. I know your parents and other people make you feel like if you don't do good at school they will love you less, but you need to know that you could flunk out of school, and you would still be the most important person to me, okay?"
i just wanted you to know, that this is me trying.
You were crying. You pulled him somehow closer and hugged him so tight, pulling away after over a minute to give him a good long kiss that expressed your gratitude. Because you were, so fucking grateful. This boy had seen all of it, and still chose you, and would continue to choose you until his last breath.
(and maybe i don't quite know what to say,)
"Thank you, Angel. You don't know how much hearing that means to me. I love you, so so much."
"You're everything. I see that you're trying, and that is always gonna be enough."
i just wanted you to know, that this is me trying. at least i'm trying.

“who is this? what’s his name? you know what, mark!”
luca fantilli x fem!reader
blurb based on the tiktok voicemail prank trend
“What do you want for dinner, babe? I was thinking fettuccine, but we don’t have any chicken so it’d just be the sauce and the noddles,” Luca asked, focus completely on the cook book in front of him.
The cook book was completely new and something that Luca hadn’t really touched before. His Mother decided to get him one once he had decided to move into the Sophomore house knowing that his cooking skills were very limited. The two of you had frequent dinner dates and his Mother thought it was a good idea to get him the book as she knew that you were the most experienced in the kitchen and didn’t want you cooking for the both of you all the time.
“That sounds good,” you replied, shooting him a gentle smile before redirecting your attention to the screen in front of you.
The smile on his face caused you get butterflies in your stomach, both from the jitteriness you experienced in your relationship and from the potential of ruining his happy mood.
Beats of silence passed by for a few moments as Luca moved from cabinet to cabinet to gather all the needed ingredients for the recipe. The domesticity of the entire situation made you not want to perform the prank and play the audio. But, you already made your mind up and genuinely wanted to see how he’d react to something like this.
You heavily sighed as you groaned out in fake frustration, dropping your phone onto the kitchen counter, the privacy screen blocking your boyfriend view of what truly was displayed on the screen.
“What’s wrong, baby?” Luca asked, shifting his body from the barely boiling water on the stove towards your figure, eyebrows furrowed in concentration and confusion.
You simply shook your head and gathered your phone back into your hands, resting your chin on your palm as you began the beginning stage of the prank.
“You know that psychology project I had a few weeks ago?” You asked, eyes focused on the screen in front of you.
Your boyfriend only simply hummed and nodded to himself as he crossed his arms and leaned on the side of the fridge next to him.
“Well, he won’t leave me alone. Like, he calls me all the time and leaves me a hundred voicemails. I haven’t listened to any of them though,” you continue, eyes darting up to gauge Luca’s reaction.
If he felt any anger or uncomfortableness, you couldn’t tell as he simply urged you to continue from where he stood, “Play the last one he left you”.
You bit your lip in anticipation as you hit record and play on the audio.
It looked like Luca couldn’t believe what he was hearing as the audio continued. His whole face contorted into something that you couldn’t quite exactly place, eyes narrowing and lips pursing as he listened.
As the audio was nearing its end, Luca interrupted, cheeks slightly pink, “Who is this dude? What’s his name? Wait, let me get Mark. Mark!”
The minute Marks name left your boyfriends lips, you let out a laugh as you tried so desperately to not give up the act just yet.
“What? What’s up?” Mark called out, stumbling down the stairs as he entered the kitchen. He looked completely disheveled, probably woke up from his nap when Luca began calling his name.
“You and I are going to knock some sense into this dude bothering (Y/N),” Luca replied, turning off the stove before quickly grabbing his phone and keys.
Mark quickly looked between you and Luca as he tried to gather what the hell was going on, sleep still evident in his eyes.
“Luca, no. You don’t even know where he lives!” You countered, turning off your phone as you tried to convince your boyfriend of finding this fake dude. “It’s a joke! It’s a trend on TikTok. It’s all fake I swear!”.
The look Luca gave you was one of a wounded puppy, completely surprised at what you just did.
“A prank?” He asked, phone and keys still tightly clasped in his hands, “Babe, you scared the shit out of me. I thought I had to go hunt this guy down and kick his ass for speaking to you like that”.
He sounded relieved, head shaking as he visibly relaxed at the information you told him.
“You woke me up to beat some imaginary dude?” Mark groggily asked, body in the same position he was in as he first rushed into the kitchen, “I was in the middle of a nap, man!”.
You could only laugh as Luca and Mark began bickering at how Mark shouldn’t be the first one Luca thinks of for beating someone up while Luca disagreed.
You could only shake your head as you stood up from your place at the counter, quickly saving the video before turning the stove back on and getting started on the dinner Luca completely forgot about.

ice skating (luca fantilli)
day 1 of star’s ficmas event!
luca fantilli x reader
Tumblr media
You should have known Luca would plan this as a date. He was always in his element when he was on the ice. He grew up playing hockey and spent winter nights skating on outdoor rinks in Canada. Luca was excited though, so naturally you were excited.
Luca carried his skates in one hand, holding you hand in his other. You didn’t own your own pair of skates. It was a Christmas deal for the two of you. Luca would plan one date and you would plan another, it was easier than arguing over what to get one another for Christmas. Luca knew the rink better than you, it wasn’t Yost, he couldn’t get the permission to have the ice to jut him and you.
Luca paid the rental fees for your skates and led you over to the benches right outside the rink entrance. “Here, let me lace them up for you,” Luca offered, kneeling in front of you as you kicked off your sneakers. He chuckled at your mismatched socks as he got the skates on your feet. “Feel good?”
You wiggled around your foot, not used to the weight on your foot now. “It’s good.”
Luca got his own skates on before standing. “Careful,” he warned you of the small step onto the ice. He was already waiting for you on the ice. It was like his second home, he didn’t think before stepping onto the ice. There were other people there, most of them probably didn’t have the skating skills Luca harbored.
Although it wasn’t your first time skating, it still felt like you were a baby giraffe learning how to stand. Luca offered his hand and he took the lead, pretty much just pulling you along. “You having fun?” Luca was always worried you weren’t enjoying dates he planned. Like the one time he took you go-karting and that failed miserably. “I’m having fun, Lu,” you smiled over at him and you could see his shoulders relax a little.
Your nose was turning pink from the cold inside and outside but you were having fun. Luca spun you around once or twice and his heart swelled at your laughter. You weren’t like Luca, though, so about thirty minutes on skates that weren’t yours, your feet were beginning to help. Luca wasn’t too upset when you asked for a break, asking to sit down.
He got you a hot chocolate from the small cafe and sat next to you on the bench. You were content to sit there and people watch, you smiled every time a small kid skated by or got back on their feet to continue trying. Luca was shaking his leg, sort of impatiently as he stared back at the ice. “Luca, you can go skate more.”
He shook his head, “No baby it’s okay, I can wait for you or we can leave if you’re tired.”
You laughed, “Luca go skate.” He thought for a second. “You sure you won’t be mad or anything? We are on a date I can always skate at practice.”
“Go Luca!”
You didn’t have to tell him again, he quickly jumped back up and got onto the ice rink. Wowing random kids and racing around the rink, Luca was in his element. You happily watched with a smile on your face as your boyfriend raced some peewee hockey players, he let them win a race he could have easily won.
He was out of breath when he joined you on the bench again. “Got your zoomies out?” you teased as he sat next to you and began to take his skates off. You had already kicked yours off and replaced them with your actual shoes. “Have fun oogling at me?” he teased back.
Luca returned your skates at the counter and held his hand out for you like he had done on the ice. “Did you have fun?” he asked again. “I had lots of fun Luca, thank you.”
He gleamed happily as he opened your car door for you. Once he climbed into the car and started it, you grabbed his hand and placed it on your thigh. “Oh, by the way, for the date I planned, we are painting Christmas mugs and decorating cookies,” you grinned.

thoughts i have about luca fantilli as a bf
leaving you little notes for you to find around your place
you will be his passenger princess (this is a non negotiable for him)
always offers to pay when you go out on dates but sometimes he will give in to your arguing and let you pay
luca is sunshine personified and would def go for the quieter girl (he totally believes opposites attract, grumpy x sunshine)
gives you a jersey to wear for his games
if luca is in the nhl when you date (he gives you his umich jersey to wear instead of his nhl team because its more special to him that way)
luca is so great with your family, it def only took one meeting with them to be convinced that he is the perfect guy for you
has a basket in the trunk of his car with things that you like/need just incase you need something while you are out running errands or on a long drive
he has a list in his notes app of all your favorites (what you order at restaurants, favorite chips, favorite brands, collectibles that you like)
is definitely the type of boyfriend that has pic of the two of you in his wallet
always asks you to help him with his tie, even though he knows how to tie it himself
luca is def an acts of service and physical touch boyfriend
luca is not afraid to use his puppy dog eyes to get you to do something
he is definitely the talkative one in the relationship
luca always needs to be touching you when you are out (holding hands, hands on the small of your back, hands on your thigh in the car)

𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐞 - 𝐥𝐮𝐜𝐚 𝐟𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢
little fall blurb + insta edit with my fav at the moment... luca !! warnings: not proofread wc: 1.01k
Tumblr media
“Babe!” Luca called out, walking into your off campus apartment. A bag full of your favourite fall treats along with a special activity he had planned, in his hand.
“In here!” You answered from your living room. You had brought every blanket you owned into the room, throwing them on the ground as all your pillows were laying on the floor.
“Jesus.” Your boyfriend mumbled under his lips as he walked in. He knew you had lots of them, but he never realized just how many you truly had. Your face light up as you saw him walk into the room, quickly walking over to him and hugging his body.
“I missed you.” You mumbled against his chest, making him chuckle a bit as he dropped the bag and wrapped his arms around you.
“I missed you too, baby.” He whispered against the top of your head, pressing a small kiss. The two of you stayed like that until the sound of thunder made you jump slightly.
“Come on, it’s fort building time, bubs.” You said excitedly as you took his hand and dragged him to where you had put everything. Your fall playlist was playing in the background as the two of you started on your build. Luca wasn’t very good at it, the blankets always falling, so you did most of the work. But, that didn’t matter to you. You were spending time together, and you couldn’t ask for anything more.
“How was practice?” You asked, now sitting inside the fort as Luca went to grab the bag he had dropped. Meanwhile, you were scrolling throught Netflix, finding Harry Potter and the Philosophy’s stone.
“Fine, I guess. Duker kept falling all the time.” He answered, joining you under the fort. Thankfully, you had baked the cookies before he arrived, and they were still a little warm. A smile grew on your face as you saw him pull out your favourite snacks and drinks from the bag, but confusion soon grew on your face when you saw him pull out paint brushes and fake pumpkins.
“I saw this thing on tiktok, I looked cool.” He admitted when you looked over at him. He had a shy look on his face, most of the time it was always you coming up with things to do during your date nights.
“Painting pumpkin?”
“Pumpkin carving is messy.” He added, his cheeks growing a little as you smiled. You pressed a long kiss to his lips before mumbling something.
“I think it’s a wonderful idea, love.” You said before pressing another kiss to his lips. The two of you prepared your whole set up, and then finally hit play. It was Friday, and Luca had the weekend off and the two of you had made the irresponsible decisions of starting a Harry Potter marathon at four pm. There was a good chance you would both fall asleep before finishing all of the, but you didn’t care.
Truly, the film was more of a background noise as the two of you painted, but you often took breaks to just cuddle and watch the movie while eating. Your evening was perfect, really, the rain drops hitting your window making the whole night feel even more comfy and welcoming as the scent from your candles filled your noses.
“Mine’s the best!” Luca exclaimed, half way through Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. You rolled your eyes at his state.
“Nu-uh. Mine is, yours is only cute because I added the bow.” You responded as you grabbed your second pumpkin and started painting again.
“Lies!”
“Fine then, we can ask our friends. But, now, shut up and watch the movie.” You mumbled as you cuddle closer to him, making sure not to make any paint go on your matching Halloween pijama pants and hoodies.
“I love you.” The boy mumbled against your ear a couple of minutes later. You looked up at him, a soft smile on your face as your eyes stared into his.
“I love you more.” Your eyes slowly closing as sleep took over.
It was fully dark outside the next time your eyes opened, but the light from your television was still shining bright. One of Luca’s hand was rubbing your head, which was resting on his shoulder as the other played with your fingers that were on his lap.
“Lu?”
“Hi, bubba. Did I wake up?” He asked, his voice calm and soft. You nodded no slightly, cuddling even closer into him. That’s when you realized a couple of blanks were now covering the two of you.
“What time is it?”
“6:30. The sunrise is soon.” He answered, the tone in his voice the same. You slowly opened your eyes, the Half-Blood Prince now playing on the screen.
“Did you sleep?” You asked, pulling your head away from him so you could look at him.
“An hour or two maybe.” The boy answered, looking down at you before pressing a small kiss to your lips. For the next thirty minutes or you, you were snoozing in and out of sleep, the movie always waking you up.
“Babe, the sun is rising.” Luca said eventually, making your eyes shoot open. You looked over him with a wide smile before walking over to the window of your living room. You loved sunrises, not as much as sunset, but enough to the point where you put a couch facing your window so you could watch it.
“Coffee?” Luca asked as he sat down, pulling out his phone from his pocket and ordering your every day starbucks order once you nodded. The two of you sat in silent, his arms wrapped around you as the sun slowly appeared in the horizon. The light hitting the yellow and red leaves, making you sigh in happiness.
The two of you enjoyed your last moments of peace for a while, knowing your roommate would be back soon, and eventually you’d find yourself in one of the hockey homes. Yelling and screaming would be the only thing you’d hear during the whole night.

“a little drunk kiss”
luca fantilli x reader
warning: creepy men, cursing, & underage drinking
not proof read so sorry if it’s confusing lolz
its your freshman year of college at michigan, and you and johnny druskinis have a class together. you both instantly became friendly, and you guys became quite close over first semester. of course this meant him forcing you to go to every home game, and also meeting the team. you’re stuck with a shitty dorm mate, and have no one from home, so considering johnny as one of your best friends is an understatement.
of course you’re acquainted with the guys on the team, but you aren’t necessarily close with many of the guys besides johnny and for some odd reason ethan and dylan. johnny’s best friend on the team is easily luca, so obviously one would assume you and luca are close, but it’s the opposite. you’re always so shy around luca, and he just gives you the same treatment you give him.
why you’re so shy around him is a mystery. a mystery to only yourself and luca. everyone knows how outgoing luca is, yet for some reason he gets shy around you and vice versa. this proves that there’s some underlying issues as to why you’re both so shy, and everyone assumes it’s because you guys find each other attractive. which isn’t necessarily incorrect, but neither of you would ever admit that to anyone.
as you tap your fingers on the side of your half full solo cup, you notice johnny getting up from the spot on the couch next to you. “where ya going?” you say, slightly slurring your words. johnny chuckles at your tipsy state, and pats the top of your head.
“i’ll be right back solider, i gotta piss” he says, calling you the stupid nickname that you have no idea where it came from. you nod your head and pull your phone out of your pocket. a few moments later the couch dips next you, and you assume johnny’s back.
“that was qui-“ you look up, and see one of the fraternity brothers sitting next to you. “oh, hi?” you say, confused what he could want from you.
“you’re pretty and you’re sitting alone. what’s your deal? you got a boyfriend?” he winks, making you immediately disgusted. you have no intentions of hooking up with anyone, so you lie. “yeah i do actually.” you smile, trying to be nice.
“oh shit really? who? where? i don’t see anyone.” he smirks, about to place a hand on your thigh. you groan and spot the only familiar face in the crowd, luca. your intoxicated and slightly scared self rises up from the couch and walks over to the luca. he turns his head to face you, and you turn your head to see if the guy is still looking. he is, so you grab lucas cheeks. “you’re my boyfriend now, okay? i’ll explain later.” you say, before immediately pulling him in for a kiss. luca is shocked at what’s happening, but quickly soothes when he realizes that the girl he’s been so desperately wanting to ask out is kissing him.
he kisses you back, before you suddenly pull away from the kiss. you trun around to see the guy from earlier looking at you both dumbfounded. luca doesn’t really know what’s going on, but begins to put the pieces together looking at the guys face. luca raises his eyes at the guy and smirks, letting him know he can back off. the guy leaves the room and you turn back to luca. now embarrassed, realizing what just happened, you apologize, “sorry about all that. he was hitting on me and asked if i had a boyfriend. i lied and said yes, and then he didn’t believe me so i had to go kiss you” you chuckle awkwardly.
“if we’re being totally honest here, i didn’t necessarily hate it.” luca smiles shyly, scratching the back of his neck nervously. your eyes open wide, and your cheeks run hot. thankfully the room is dim so he can’t really see them, or so you hope. “w-what?” you say, immediately dumbfounded.
“you heard me, y/n,” luca says, taking a sip from his cup. your heart rate increases and you’re at a loss for words. luca can see how he’s made you nervous, and usually the golden retriever boy would be panicking but the alcohol in his system is telling him otherwise. “did you hate it?” “no.” you blurt out, afraid he might take back his statement from a few seconds ago.
“good.” he says before pulling you back in. you guys both taste like different alcoholic drinks, and smell a little bit like sweat, but who cares. after a little bit of making out, ignoring all of the people surrounding you both, you both pull back and just smile. “so, you have any interest in being my actual boyfriend?” “hey! i thought i already was!” luca jokes, making you playfully hit his chest.
“i’d love to be.” he says, wrapping his arm around your shoulder. you lean into his side, and he presses a soft kiss into your hair. you both go do a shot together to celebrate the impulsive idea, both knowing damn well that the sober versions of you guys will be so confused, yet so happy.

author's note: first one ahhh!!! had this done months ago when i saw that day in the life video the umich social team posted of luca and then promptly went on a six hour plane ride and banged this out. apologies if some of the details are inaccurate — i tried my best though some are also made purposefully to fit with the narrative
*****
Melody Lin rarely talks about it.
In the instance that it gets brought up, she just shrugs, always giving just a brief overview because there’s no point in summing up 18 years of history in a few sentences, especially when she knows if she thinks about it too much and talks about it out loud she’ll get emotional.
Growing up in the suburbs of Toronto was the typical suburban experience. She grew up only a street and a 2 minute car ride from her best friend Shayla and even though Shayla ended up going to University of Michigan and she went to Northwestern, they remained the closest of friends. Melody’s close with the whole Gallo family to the point where she just walks in and no one bats an eye anymore. Wherever Melody is, Shayla isn’t far behind, and vice versa.
Being close with the Gallo family means she’s been to almost every family gathering, every big family event. Everyone in their families knows the other because the two girls are so close that they’re pretty much sisters.
Melody doesn’t even remember the day she met Luca Fantilli.
Luca is one of Shayla’s many cousins, only two years younger than Shayla. His family lives around a 10 minute drive away, so their parents love to gather on the weekends, therefore bringing the kids close together. Age wise, it goes Shayla, then Luca two years later, then Adam and Katie, Shayla’s younger sister, are the same age. There’s other cousins, older and younger, but these four have always been close, finding themselves naturally in a group when their families get together.
That means that naturally, Melody grew up also being close with the four, coming by many weekends when the cousins gathered and being dragged into their shenanigans, from playing tag when they were kids to piling in a car to get ice cream when they were teenagers. And they loved her too. Katie loved having another older sister figure with Melody being more calm compared to Shayla. Adam loved how funny she was and how no matter how much shit they gave her, she’d brush it all off with an easy smile.
And then Luca. Like his brother and cousins, he loved how friendly she was. During the few years they overlapped in the same school, she always said hi to him in the hallways, never treating him or his brother any differently just because they were younger. When he needed a ride, whether it was to the rink or gym or that he just wanted to get out of the house, he could always text her and she would drive him, even if she gave him flack for it. And even though she started out as just Shayla’s friend, they quickly grew to have their own friendship, texting from time to time even when he was at Kimball for two years and she went off to college. He loved how giving she was and how smart she was and how no one ever really seemed to have a bad word to say about her. He’d always light up at seeing her and looked forward to the crushing hugs she would give him, especially after a few months of not seeing each other.
Those weekends are imprinted in Melody’s brain, when the Gallo house is loud and lively and all the adults are chatting and laughing and the kids are off doing whatever they want, her and Shayla always being put in charge because they’re the oldest of the five. Sometimes there were guest stars — Shayla’s high school boyfriend, Adam’s high school girlfriend, whoever the hell Luca was dating at the time, Katie and her best friend — but it was mostly just the five of them.
It was always Shay, Mel, Luca, Adam and Katie.
(If you ask Luca now, he probably fell in love with her back when they were teenagers, somewhere between when she would drive him and his brother home after a rough practice and let them rant and when she’d laugh so loudly by the pool during the summer that she’d snort)
(Melody obviously loved everything about Shayla, thought Adam was one of the sweetest boys she’s ever met and adored Katie like a younger sibling. But even from the start, she had a special place in her heart for Luca, with his infectious smile and his positive energy. Somewhere along the way, he stopped being just Shayla’s cousin)
That friendship strengthened when he and Adam signed a commitment to play with the Chicago Steel starting Melody’s sophomore year at Northwestern. Shayla was thankful that her best friend was there for her two younger cousins, though the two hockey players never needed anyone to look after them. Since Melody had a car and her and Shayla’s breaks often overlapped, Melody would grab Adam and Luca in Chicago and then drive through Ann Arbor to pick Shayla up as they all headed home. The drive wasn’t all that bad, especially with the company.
Somewhere during the start of her sophomore year, she and Luca confessed to each other that they had feelings towards each other and started dating. It started out well. Inbetween her classes and college commitments and his practices and games, they’d find time to see each other. It helped that they both had cars as well.
There was this cafe / book bar place between them called The Alcott that she had discovered by a recommendation from a friend who lived around the area that wasn’t closed because of COVID. That started to become the place for them to meet. Whether she had to drag along her laptop and notebooks or not, it started to become their place. She tried to go to as many of his games as she could and he tried to come to campus to be with her, even when she was cramming for exams and couldn’t give him much attention.
She’d feel bad during the days where she wasn’t much fun, but he didn’t care. Being in her presence was enough, he’d always say with an encouraging kiss and a promise for milkshakes after dinner as a treat before he’d have to go back to Chicago. She met his teammates and he met her college friends and they tried and tried to make it work. When the Chicago Steel won the Clark Cup, she made it a priority to go to watch the final, not having been able to go to his last regular season game and all of playoffs due to final projects and labs. At the end, she had leaned over the boards to crush Adam in a tight hug before kissing Luca sweetly.
And then two weeks after that, when summer was about to start — which should’ve been the time they would be at their best and brightest together, things started to fall apart. Though, when Melody looks back at it now, things were slowly falling apart for a bit before then. Pointed questions about what each other’s plans were for the night when they could’ve been together, weak excuses for skipping the nightly FaceTime call, just generally not as much effort from both sides.
Even throughout it all, she still deeply cared about him. That didn’t change even during their last argument that led to their break up.
“Mel, I don’t know what you want me to do at this point,” Luca says, pacing around her room and running his hair through his hair.
“I don’t ask for much,” she says, biting her lip, watching him pace and trying to keep her control. “I know hockey keeps you busy. I get it. I knew what I was signing up for. But I didn’t hear from you for a week, Luca. Not a call. Not even a good morning text. What the fuck am I supposed to do with that?”
“I told you I was going to be busy, angel.” Even the pet name doesn’t soften her. She starts raising her voice.
“Goddammit, Luca. I know! But guess what? I’m also busy too. You think college is easy? I don’t know if I’ve slept for more than 5 hours a night this last month. But I still make the time.”
“Do you?” His eyes flash with something she’s never seen from him before. He’s not quite yelling, but he’s not talking at a normal volume either. “When’s the last time we went out to dinner? When’s the last time before the final that you came to one of my games? Jackson asked me before the final if we were still together since he hadn’t seen you. Do you know how fucked up that is?”
“Since when the fuck do you care about what anyone has to say?”
“Since all of their girlfriends are in the stands every week!”
She flinches. “I’m sorry I couldn’t make it to playoffs but you told me it was okay. I didn’t know you felt that way because you don’t talk to me anymore. I can’t read your mind. I’m trying my best here.”
“You know what? I can’t do this anymore.”
“Can’t do what?” She whispers.
“This. Us. It’s clearly not working.”
“Luca.”
He sits down on the chair across from her and puts his head in his hands momentarily. “You’re right. We barely talk. We’re both so busy. The last thing I want is for you to resent me.”
“So that’s it?” She croaks out.
His eyes are watery. “Please don’t make this harder than it has to be, angel.”
“You’re the one making this hard!” She bites her lip and looks up to keep the tears from falling, which isn’t working because a couple tears still slip out. She fights a brief battle with herself and then deflates. “I’m always going to be your biggest supporter.”
He lets out a shaky breath. “Mel.”
“I mean it. I meant it years ago when we were kids. I mean it now. I’ll mean it forever.”
He laughs hollowly. “This sucks.” He lets out a shaky breath. “Do you think we could still be friends?”
She tries to smile. “Well, I’m still best friends with your cousin and that’s not gonna change. So I’m sure I’ll see you around.” She swallows. “I need time though, if we want to be friends in the future.”
“I get it. Yeah.” He sighs. “I’m sorry.”
She shrugs dejectedly. “I’m sorry too.”
“Can I get one more hug?”
The hug is already sad enough. The kiss in her hair has her crying into his chest.
It was tough that summer especially, because she still wanted to spend time with Shayla and she also knew that Shayla still wanted to see Luca. But it was still too fresh, so when she knew that Luca was coming by, she avoided going to Shayla’s, which her best friend understood. She took Adam out for ice cream a couple of times, genuinely wanting to see how he was doing and catch up and everything was good and normal as they steered away from topics that were still fresh. Except during one hug as she dropped him off, where he whispered in her ear, “I know it’s too soon. I completely get it. But I know Luca would love to see you before you head back to school.”
(She doesn’t end up seeing him)
Junior year comes and goes. She has a great time despite the hours of studying for exams and the stress of classes. She makes new friends, gets closer with her old ones, collects new memories and laughs until there’s no sound coming out of her mouth. She sometimes wakes up with a hangover, but has to trudge to the library anyway to cram for a Monday morning exam. The first time she goes to The Alcott post break-up, she tries to sit in the spot by the corner and she has to leave within 5 minutes so she doesn’t have a meltdown in public.
Shayla tells her that Luca and Adam are both officially committed to play at Michigan next year, and she’s not sure if she should text them. She ends up texting them both separately right when they post on Instagram though because she’s so happy and excited and proud of them, even if Luca isn’t hers anymore.
i heard about the good news!! congrats on umich (officially)!!
Thanks Mel!! So good to hear from you. I hope all is good at Northwestern
all’s good here! seriously, luca. i’m so proud of you.
He simply had liked the text and it was enough for the both of them. It had to be enough.
She tried her best to steer away from hearing about him, but it was really hard, especially when both him and Adam were doing so well in hockey and were the talk of the town, especially back home. They always had been, but nowadays it was more and more and it was bittersweet to hear.
She didn’t come back home for the summer of her senior year, her internship leading her to New York City. And while it was sad because she couldn’t see Shayla, who herself was doing an internship in Detroit, it gave her a bit of relief that she wasn’t going to be in her hometown when a large  reason she calls it home is because of the boy who she had given her heart to. She had fun in New York, went on a couple of dates — which was the most she’s done with her romantic life since her breakup — but while her friends were living up their summers and she was cheering them on, she couldn’t shake the feeling of the younger Italian hockey player away from her mind. She hated that she couldn’t shake him off.
(You’ve been friends for almost two decades, Shayla would remind her. Of course you’re not gonna get over it quickly. There’s too much history there)
As Melody entered her senior year, she set out a goal to have fun. Work hard, of course, but also to have fun and really enjoy her last year. With parts of her college experience being interrupted by the pandemic, she felt like it was only right to give herself some time before she’d be in labs and research the rest of her life.
She still followed Luca on social media, so she saw his Snapchat stories and his Instagram posts. He looked like he was having a blast at Michigan and she honestly couldn’t have been any happier for him, even if there was always a stab of something in her heart seeing him pop up on her feed. She still drove through Ann Arbor during school breaks to pick up Shayla, and now Adam and Luca as well when they didn’t have to stay for hockey commitments. Shayla tried telling her friend that she didn’t have to, but Melody always waved her off. Luca texted her happy birthday and she did the same and she ended up crying in the shower both times.
Shayla had convinced her to come to a Michigan vs Michigan State hockey game and Melody didn’t really have an excuse, since she was gonna drive up that morning from Northwestern to go home for winter break. She had been hesitant, not wanting to overstep but Shayla had just laughed in her face. Come to Michigan, stay the night with me, and then we’ll all head back to Ontario in the morning. Shayla had even gotten Adam and Luca to text her to convince her, with Luca’s text being the final push
Heard from Shay and Adam that you were hesitant on coming to the game. If that hesitancy is because of me, please don’t let it be. It’ll be a fun one.)
The game is fun and thrilling, just like Luca promised it would be. Melody’s met some of Shayla’s college friends before and they’re no less welcoming than they always are. After the game ends, Shayla and her are walking back to her apartment when Shayla stops. Adam just texted me, she says. They’re all at one of the hockey houses and they want to meet you. Let’s stop by. Melody stills for a moment before letting Shayla lead her in the opposite direction. She knows Shayla knows some of the guys, but she’s never met any of them and she doesn’t want to make it awkward.
But that thought immediately goes away as Adam hugs her and spins her around as soon as they walk in, causing her to laugh and Shayla to pout playfully. Adam just rolls his eyes after setting Melody down. Shay, I see you all the time, he says. Melody gets on her tiptoes and kisses him quickly on the cheek, rolling her eyes as he playfully wipes it off. He leads them into the house and Melody’s thrown into a round of introductions and she’s a bit overwhelmed but she’s smiley and friendly and congratulates them all on the win. She’s immediately enraptured in a brief conversation with Nolan Moyle, Mark Estapa and Luke Hughes and she pretends to not see the other guys eyeing Luca with a knowing look.
Melody Lin rarely talks about it. She wonders how much Luca Fantilli does, especially since they all seem to know who she is.
She would be the slightest bit uncomfortable, but a majority of them are younger than her and she knows how to deal with the rowdiness of hockey boys. So weirdly enough, she feels right at home, even though it’s her first time here.
When she finally makes her way to Luca, she smiles, even if it’s a bit dimmed. She’s keenly aware of eyes on her but she tries to ignore them as she hugs him tightly, trying not to breathe in his cologne too much.
“Good game,” she mutters into his ear before pulling away.
“Thanks, angel.”
She kinda wants to kill him. He lost his right to call her that when he broke up with her. But she just smiles before turning to introduce herself to Ethan Edwards.
When she pulls up to Adam and Luca’s place the next morning with a big yawn, Shayla in the seat next to her, Adam hands Shayla a hot chocolate and she’s pleasantly surprised when Luca hands her an iced coffee. She takes a sip as they dump their bags in the trunk. A latte with two pumps of vanilla syrup. He still remembers.
She hates him. She loves him. She’ll always love him
(She watches the game on her laptop and sighs sadly when Michigan’s run at the Frozen Four is cut short. She texts in the group chat consisting of Shayla, Katie, Adam, Luca and her rather than individually.
💛💙proud of you both always
When Adam wins the Hobey Baker the day after, she immediately calls him, not expecting him to answer and ready to leave a voicemail. But he answers after two rings, and the first thing he asks is if they can switch to FaceTime. Suddenly, her screen is filled with Adam with his shades on in the Florida sun with the disgusting mullet. She just grins and congratulates him while he’s positively beaming. He shows her the trophy briefly and she hears some of his teammates yelling their greetings and she just laughs at all the chaos. She lets him go after another round of congratulations and tries not to let her smile fade when Luca comes on the screen with a wave.
Her heart aches.)
Graduation week is crazy and bittersweet and wonderful as she says goodbye to her younger friends and holds on to make some last minute memories with her best friends before her family and loved ones come to celebrate officially at the ceremony. She has dinner with her parents, her older sister Elena, Shayla and Shayla’s parents the night before her school convocation. She cheers for her friends when they walk across the stage the next morning, tries not to trip when she walks across and honestly kind of blacks out. Shespots her family in the stands purely from Shayla waving like crazy and laughs, waving back. Through all the chaos, she finds her family afterwards and pauses.
Because there’s Luca. Dressed in a white short sleeved button down and blue jeans, hair out of a baseball cap for once and standing there with a sheepish smile, a beautiful bouquet of purple and white flowers in his hand.
Why is he here?
She tears her eyes away from him as she hugs her parents and sister with a big smile. She squeals as she hugs Shayla, swaying side by side, reflecting back to late April when Shayla was the one graduating and the positions were reversed.
But all she can see is Luca. You, you, you, her mind whispers.
“Hi.”
“Hey.”
“I didn’t know you were coming.”
He shrugs. “Wanted to surprise you.” He hugs her and she can’t help but smile being tucked into his chest. “Congrats, Mel. I’m so proud of you.”
“Thanks,” She mutters, blinking as he gives her the flowers. “These are beautiful. Jesus.”
“Here, let me hold something for you.” He takes her bag off her shoulder as well as her diploma out of her hands as she adjusts the three bouquets of flowers she’s gotten, trying not to crush any of them.
“Picture time!” Melody’s mom exclaims and then there’s a flurry of smiling and picture taking and lighting and angles and every combination possible, ending with Melody and Luca.
(When her mom sends the pictures later that night, she blinks at how couply they look. There’s a particular picture where she’s laughing at something Shayla said off camera and he’s looking at her like he might still be in love with her)
They stop by her apartment briefly so they can change before they all go to dinner. Apparently, everyone else knew Luca was coming because no one bats an eye as he comes along to their dinner. She’ll have to talk to Shayla about that later.
And it’s good, really. The conversation is easy and the food is good and she tries to ignore everytime her elbows brush against Luca’s and notes when his arm is around her chair so she doesn't lean back. They discuss the plan for the next day where Melody is just planning on packing before the all university commencement the day after. Her family is planning to explore the Chicago area while Shayla is attending another friend’s commencement at University of Chicago. When Luca’s asked of his plans, he hesitates. She doesn’t know what makes her say her next sentence, but she says it.
“If you wouldn’t mind, I could use another set of hands to help me pack.”
His head whips to her, mouth open a little. She tries to smile assuringly. He nods. “I don’t mind.”
“Yeah?”
“Yeah. It’ll be fun.”
She snorts. “Packing is not fun ever, but I like the enthusiasm.”
The next morning, she picks him up from the hotel all of them are staying at (“I’m in a room with Shayla and it’s a nightmare. How does someone’s shit get everywhere in such a short period of time?”) and drives in the opposite direction from her apartment. It takes him a surprisingly short amount of time to realize that they’re going in the wrong direction. When he asks where they’re going, she bites her lip.
“I’m craving one last iced vanilla latte from The Alcott.”
Silence and then a small chuckle. “Are their blueberry muffins still as good?”
“Yup.”
“We gotta get some of those too then.”
And conversation is surprisingly easy. They talk about Michigan’s run to the Frozen Four and how that was cut short but what an amazing season they had, Adam’s World Championship win with Canada and his upcoming draft (she was invited months ago by Adam and the entire Fantilli family to Nashville, to which everyone but her was not surprised about), her last year at Northwestern, his first year at Michigan, and anything and everything in between. It’s so easy that it almost aches, the familiarity of The Alcott and what it means to her and what it means to them as she watches him order for the both of them and pays even though she tries to fight. She wanders over to the corner — their old spot — because she wants to savor this one more time before she has to let go. Before she has to let go of this place and this boy. Because she can’t keep him. He was never hers to begin with.
“Do you remember when we were snowed in here?”
She turns her head to look back at him before letting out a small chuckle at the memory. “Yeah. You were panicking because you thought your game was still on and I was surprised when it was cancelled, considering it’s Chicago and they never cancel anything due to snow.”
“And then they gave out free coffee refills and you were probably the happiest person in this place, just studying and humming along or scribbling in your journal.”
“We must’ve been here for, what, 6 hours?”
“Probably more, to be honest. Donna wouldn’t let a single person even think about driving until the storm had passed.”
She smiles, even if a bit sad. “Good times.”
He hums in agreement, and if she was looking at him and not out the window, she would notice that he’s looking at her fondly. “You’re a college graduate.”
She rolls her eyes. “It’s not that big of a deal.”
“You’re right. It’s not, because we all knew you were always the smart one. But it is a big deal because it’s just crazy how time moves so fast.”
“How do you think I feel watching you and Adam get old and go to college? Not that you were innocent before, but Adam sent me some snapchats of your shenanigans at frat parties and sometimes I genuinely wonder how you’re alive and kicking for practice the next morning.”
“Fucking Adam. Always painting me in a bad light,” Luca scoffs, before clearing his throat. “How have you been? How do you feel?”
She lets out something between a laugh and a sigh. “Okay, I think. Overwhelmed. Excited. Scared. Thankful. Thinking about all the stuff I have to pack.”
“Do you have most of it done?”
She snorts. “Absolutely not. That’s what you’re here for.”
“Glad I could be of service.”
She stands up with her drink. “Come on. Let’s get out of here.”
Once they get to her place, Melody puts Luca to work immediately, instructing him on which boxes to put things in as she cleans up her room. They work well together. When he’s stepping behind her to get somewhere or something, he always touches her back or elbow or shoulder gently and he doesn’t get annoyed at her indecisiveness on how to pack things, just dutifully following all her instructions. They’re about 70% done when her roommates Alison and Carey come in briefly and they meet Luca and they know exactly who he is but Melody’s thankful that they don’t let it show and gives them a meaningful look as they leave.
By the time most of her things are packed, it’s dinner time and she suggests that they drive to another one of her favorite spots on campus to grab a bite. A little sweaty, a little exhausted, she has to stop in her tracks when he shoots her the sweetest smile, adjusting the hat on his head and washing his hands before they head out.
And because it’s only seniors left on campus, it’s not surprising when she runs into a couple people she knows, weaving through to order and find a place to sit at the bar. More often than not she’s stopped and she introduces Luca to everyone and he’s smiling and she knows that everyone is immediately charmed because it’s Luca and that’s always been his effect on people, ever since they were kids. He’s wearing a Michigan hat and gets some chirps that he takes in stride and that make her giggle.
(If you were to ask Luca, it makes complete sense that everyone they’ve run into has nothing but a smile on their faces. Melody’s always been able to make anyone she’s come into contact with fall in love with her)
She heads to the bathroom at one point and when she walks back out, she sees a drop dead gorgeous blonde girl sitting where she sat and Melody’s not surprised but her heart falls a bit, watching the girl clearly flirt with him, if her body language indicates anything. She observes for a couple of seconds before taking a deep breath and walking back. She platers on the largest smile she can muster, her lips softening to a more genuine one when she sees him perk up.
“And there she is! The reason I’m here and the star herself.”
She can’t help but chuckle. “You’re sweet.” She turns to the girl. “Hey, I’m Melody. It’s nice to meet you.”
“Connie. Nice to meet you too. You graduated this weekend too?”
“Yup. You?”
“Yeah.”
“Well, congratulations.”
“Congratulations to you as well.”
Connie turns to Luca and Melody tries her best to not roll her eyes. “It was nice to meet you, Luca. I hope Melody gives you a proper tour of Evanston.”
“Best tour guide there is,” Luca responds easily, and Connie slips out of her chair with one last smile before Melody sits back in her seat. “Cool it with the death glare.”
“I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
“Uh huh.”
She takes a sip of her coke, determinedly staring at his water. “You can flirt with anyone you want.”
“She was flirting. I wasn’t flirting back.”
“That doesn’t sound like you,” she tries to tease lightly. “I’m sure girls fall at your feet at Michigan.” I know what that’s like, she thinks to herself. “Speaking of, anyone I should know about? Just so I can prepare myself for when I get jumpscared when I take you out for ice cream.”
“First of all, that’s an Adam move. And nope. No one’s caught my eye.”
“No?”
“No.”
“Surprising.”
He shrugs.
She hums, letting it go and steering towards safer conversation topics.
In the car on the way back to the hotel, she gets the courage.
“Luca.”
“Yeah?”
“Why did you break up with me?”
A sharp inhale. The words linger in the air. She grips her steering wheel.
“I don’t know.”
Silence. A disbelieving scoff.
“Thanks, Luca.”
“No, no. Give me a second. I truly mean it, especially now looking back. At the time I thought it was what was best so that we would stay friends and not grow to hate each other, but when I think about it more and more, that reasoning is shit so I don’t know anymore. You deserved better.”
(Honestly, it’s probably good that they’re hashing this out now. She was far too nice to him two years ago.)
“If I deserved better why didn’t you do better?” She whispers. “Luca, you didn't even give me a chance to fix it.”
“I know. I know. I panicked and I ran and I lost you.”
“You’ve never lost me. I’m best friends with your cousin. I’ve driven you and Adam to and from school. I’m still here. The last thing I wanted to do that night was break up. You practically jumped at the chance..”
“But I lost you in the way it mattered.” He reaches over to grab her hand and she doesn’t pull away. He takes that as a good sign. “I fucked it all up, didn’t I? All this time we could’ve been together but we weren’t because I just ran away.”
“Why did you break up with me?” She repeats stoically.
“I guess, I guess I got it into my head that you deserve so much better than me. I mean, I was playing junior hockey and you were at fucking Northwestern and you’ve always been so much smarter than I am which I love, don’t get me wrong. You are so, so beautiful and kind to everyone and generous and you’ve literally been there for me since forever and… I just felt like I was holding you back and you deserve better and-“
“It’s not your choice to determine what I think I deserve,” she says firmly. “If you had just talked to me about it…Luca. All I wanted was for you to talk to me that night. And the few weeks before. I loved you for who you were, junior hockey and all or whatever the fuck else you said. Do you forget that we grew up together? I’ve seen it all, and I’ve stuck by you because I loved you.”
He takes a deep breath. “Do you know why no one’s caught my eye at Michigan?”
She freezes, having a feeling what the answer is but hoping it isn’t true (or hoping it is true). “Why?”
“Because the only girl who I see myself with is in Chicago.”
She swallows roughly. “You can’t just say that shit, Luca. It’s not fair.”
“I know, I know. I just-I…I’m sorry. I know I’m not being fair. I just…I miss you. And I’m sorry I didn’t tell you that I was coming to your graduation but I couldn’t miss it. I really am so proud of you. I’ve always been your biggest fan.”
She stops at a red light and looks at him. “I hated you for a bit.”
“I don’t blame you.”
“But looking back, I don’t think I ever hated you. I was just sad and heartbroken.”
He squeezes his eyes shut. He had always vowed to himself that he would never hurt her. The light turns green and she drives again.
She speaks up again. “Everyone always told me time is the best thing after a breakup. I didn’t know what they meant until I did. And seeing you got easier everytime, and I still wanted the best for you, even if I wasn’t the one by your side anymore. I still do. But at the same time, I wanted to forget you.”
“Would you consider trying again?”
“Luca-”
“I, just hear me out. I fucked up. I know that. God, I knew that the second I walked out of your place that night. I love you. I still love you. And I know I’m being unfair about all of this. But I just…my life is so much better with you by my side. I’ve realized that more than ever these last two years. And if you don’t feel the same way anymore, I get it. We can keep being friends or I can give you space if you want…whatever you need. I just had to say it. I love you. I can’t really see myself ever stopping, to be honest.”
In the middle of his little speech, she had pulled into the hotel and parked, killing the engine. It’s silent for a few moments as she mulls over his words.
“You really hurt me, Luca. I don’t know if I love you anymore.” His face starts falling, but she quickly continues. “But I think I could. Love you again, I mean. Maybe. But it has to be different this time.” He perks up but she holds up a hand and he listens. “We need to communicate better. We have to talk through our problems when they come up, not run away from them. We can’t just sweep things under the rug.”
“Deal.”
“I’m gonna be working in Chicago and you’re gonna be in Ann Arbor. The distance is still gonna be like before. We’re probably gonna be away from each other more than we’re together.”
“Worth it,” a soft smile appears on his lips. “Congratulations, by the way. On the job. I don’t know if I mentioned it yet.”
“Thank you,” she looks down at her hands. She sighs. “I wanted us to work the first time. I really did. God, Luca. You’re one of the most important people in my life.”
“I’m gonna try so hard to be someone that you deserved the first time and that you deserve now.”
She smiles a bit sadly at that. “All you need to be is yourself. That’s all I ask.”
“Deal.”
“I know things are kinda busy coming up, with your cousin’s wedding and Adam’s draft and me going on my trip. But, uh, maybe we can go on a date when I’m back? If it isn’t too late.”
“It’s never too late when it comes to you,” Luca says. “I’d love that.” He leans in to kiss her cheek.
“Come on. I’ll walk you up to your room.”
Things still don’t quite fall into place after that weekend. The next time she sees Luca is when she comes to Nashville for the draft. Luca’s been beaming all day, extremely proud of his brother, but it doesn’t compare to the feeling he felt earlier when Melody and Shayla walked out of their hotel room, Melody wearing a blue satin jumpsuit and looking as stunning as ever. When she greeted him with a hug, he planted a brief kiss in her hair and watched fondly as she embraced Adam, straightening out his collar and placing a sweet kiss on his cheek, muttering some words to him that only those two could hear, Adam closing his eyes and nodding as she smiled. Luca knows how much her being here means to Adam.
(Only close family knew that on Adam’s vest on the back are the names of the important people in his life. When he takes off the suit jacket to show Shayla and Melody, the former beams while the latter starts sniffling. Both so proud of him. Both honored to be on his back in cursive. And Luca just hands her a tissue when she sees a particular picture on the inside of his jacket of the four of them when they were younger at the beach. It’s one of her favorites. It means so much.)
She cries when Adam gets picked third overall to the Columbus Blue Jackets and squeezes Shayla’s hand in excitement as Adam walks onto the stage. Afterwards when she sees him, she practically leaps onto him and squeezes him so tight as he spins her around.
(“Oh, Adam,” she says with a sniffle. “I’m so, so proud of you. Congratulations.”
“Thanks, Mel.” He says into her shoulder. “Thank you for everything. Everything.”
She pulls away but can’t help herself and hugs him again. “I love you. I love you so much.”
“I love you too,” he says as she backs away, biting her lip while placing her hands on his cheek.)
She’s then traveling with a couple friends around Europe and he’s in Pittsburgh for a few days for development camp before hanging out with friends and training. They text semi-frequently but she’s abroad and having fun and he respects that. He’s trying to figure out how to show her that he’s serious about the second chance she’s given him while trying not to overstep.
When he picks her up from Toronto Pearson Airport in mid July, it’s 7 am and she looks and feels like shit. But she comes out of Arrivals and immediately sees Luca waving, big smile on his face, a Michigan shirt on, a hat flipped backwards on his hair and a bouquet of carnations in his hands, looking at her like she’s the most beautiful girl he’s ever seen. She hugs him, taking the flowers with a smile as he grabs her duffle from her shoulder. Whether from exhaustion or simply because she’s missed him in more ways than she’d like to admit, she leans into his side as they walk out of the airport and into the parking lot and he immediately responds by putting an arm around her shoulder and pressing a kiss on her forehead.
It’s so easy to fall back into rhythm with him, as she just admires him while he’s driving, too tired at the moment to recount her travels. Once they get off the highway, he puts the windows down and opens the skylight and there’s a pang of deja vu as he turns up the music a bit, humming along to some country tune. He slows down in front of Betty’s Diner and she furrows her eyebrows.
He smiles, stopping the engine. “I’m gonna go in real quick and grab some food, okay? Told Betty you were coming back today and she insisted on cooking you your favorite. I convinced her to put it in a to-go box but I promised her we’d come back to eat in at some point.”
Melody’s heart practically melts at the thoughtfulness. “Thanks, Lu.”
(He almost trips over himself getting out of the car. She hasn’t called him Lu in so long)
Luca’s house is empty, as Adam is training and his parents are both at work. Melody takes a quick shower to wash off the grime of the plane and when she comes out — in a UMich shirt and sweats she has to roll up that he laid out— the breakfast is all heated up on plates, the bouquet of flowers he gave her still wrapped but in a cup of water so they don’t die. Luca turns around at the sound of footsteps and something flashes through his eyes at the sight of her wearing his clothes again but he shakes himself out of it, instead just sliding a plate towards her. She slumps down on the kitchen island and thanks him with a hum before diving in.
Once she’s full and Luca’s taking all the plates and washing them before she can even blink, she speaks up. “Is this the date?”
“No,” he admits. “I figured I’d give you a couple of days to get over the jetlag before taking you out for real. I just, I wanted to do something nice.”
She wipes her lips with a napkin. “Not that I don’t appreciate all of this, because I do, but what…why?”
“You gave me a second chance. I’m not gonna waste that chance.” His eyes widen in fear. “I-I’m sorry if I’m overwhelming you or being too forward. I-if you wanna go home or to Shayla’s, I can drop you off or-”
She smiles slightly. “Relax, Luca.” He blinks. It’s times like this he remembers that she’s two years older and much more level headed than he is. “I was just curious. You don’t have to do this all for me, you know?”
“I want to,” Luca replies simply. “Making up for lost time, I guess.”
“Then come over and finish up these waffles for me,” she says with a small smile, laughing when he barrels over and inhales them.
After breakfast, he can tell she needs sleep even if she won’t admit it. So he puts on Abbot Elementary and puts an arm around her shoulder as she leans into him on the couch. Halfway through the episode, she’s fallen asleep on his chest and he just smiles, staring down at her. He very carefully turns the volume down and shifts so that they’re both more in a comfortable position.
(When Adam comes back from training, he walks into the sight of his older brother and someone who might as well be his older sister cuddling, both asleep with Abbot Elementary still playing. He turns the TV off and tosses a blanket over them, staring at them both thoughtfully before heading to his room)
They do end up going on a date a couple days later. Luca picks her up at the door of her childhood home, waves to her mom and dad and gives her another bouquet of flowers (daisies this time). He then drives them to a nearby park that she hasn’t been to in at least 5 years and then pulls out a picnic basket of sandwiches, fruit, pasta salad, chips and cans of seltzer. She blinks as he lays it all out, because he’s really pulling out the stops and she has to stop herself from just leaning in and kissing him.
And the conversation between them is, yet again, so easy, reminding her of one of the many reasons she always liked him, even before they started dating. Their ability to bounce off of each other and talk about practically everything isn’t something that she’s been able to replicate with anyone else quite yet. There are some instances where they slip into some dangerous territory, but they successfully steer away from it. Those are conversations that need to be had, but not today.
For awhile, especially after their breakup, Melody had only fixated on their differences, with his hockey and party life at Michigan and her research and much tamer college life at Northwestern. But during that picnic, laying down with her head on his lap, she had a realization that they were similar in many ways she hadn’t thought about before — their love for Toronto, their distaste for judgemental people, their passion for leaving an impact, the way they love their friends and family, their love for music.
(It probably only took that date for Melody to fall in love with Luca again, but she would never admit that to herself)
They book a last minute trip to Seattle in late July— it’s purely because Melody found tickets to Taylor Swift last minute that were a reasonable price. She would’ve taken Shayla, but she already saw Taylor in Detroit two days before Melody’s graduation. So the couple hike some trails, eat some good food and have a blast at Taylor Swift.
(During ‘Fearless,’ which is one of Melody’s favorites, she’s hyper emotional, feeling Luca’s hands around her waist and him singing softly into her ear. He must also remember all the times she played this in the car growing up. During ‘Love Story,’ which is Luca’s favorite, she swears the stadium is shaking and it’s such a wonderful feeling to be a part of something like this. In the middle of the second chorus, she looks back at him with a smile, and he kisses her probably too deeply for what’s considered proper in public. But she can’t care less. And when he sings the last four lines to her in her ear, it feels something like a promise.)
He drives down with her to Chicago mid-August to help her move into her new apartment with a mutual friend from college who’s coming in September. Just like when he helped her move out, he doesn’t complain once. But this time, inbetween moving boxes, he puckers his lips and gets a kiss. The moment she realizes that she’s in her new home for the foreseeable future is when she’s placing some framed pictures around in her room, this particular one being of Shayla, Adam, Luca, Katie and her at the draft just under two months before. She doesn’t have that many framed pictures around, but this one was important to her to have up. She sets it down on the desk and just looks at it, even as Luca comes up to hug her from behind, resting his chin on her shoulder.
Shayla’s off to Houston for her job, Adam is off to Columbus to play in the NHL, Luca’s going back to Ann Arbor to do what he loves, Katie is going back to UCLA for her second year and she’s starting her job in Chicago.
All five of them doing what they love, excited for the future, grateful for the past. And doing it together, even if they’re all in different states.
He stays with her for a couple of days before heading back to Michigan. That goodbye sucks in particular, as she clings onto him. She’s trying so hard not to let tears fall, but when he softly mutters that he loves her (the first time he’s said those words since they decided to try again), the waterfall starts and she just sobs into his chest as he quietly whispers sweet nothings and rubs her back, kissing her hair and face and fingers and whispering that they’ll see each other in no time — which isn’t true. She has no idea when she’ll be able to get some time off as a new employee and he’s not gonna have that much time to spare once hockey season officially starts.
(She doesn’t say it back yet, something inexplicable holding her back. But as he kisses her soundly at the airport before heading through security, she knows she does)
As she’s driving to Ann Arbor in December it takes her an embarrassingly long time to realize why it feels like deja vu.
Last year around this time, she made this exact same drive to see a game against the exact same team. Except this time, it’s different. Adam isn’t there. Shayla isn’t there. The team is different. Her and Luca are different.
And as she’s driving to Ann Arbor, she knows she has to let him know. She has to let him know she loves him.
This is only the third time she’s seen him since he helped her move in August. She would be lying if she said it hasn’t been tough and there haven’t been moments where she wonders if it’s worth it. But then her phone lights up, signaling a text from him or food she didn’t order ends up at her doorstep or she watches streams of UMich games and watches him score and then she’s reminded that she made the right choice in giving Luca a second chance.
She loves watching hockey. She loves watching Luca play hockey.
She got the number of Maggie, Kienan’s girlfriend, from Luca because she would only be able to make it to Michigan right before the game started, and Maggie was more than happy to lead her inside with her media pass and introduce her to some of the other significant others before she’d actually have to get back to work. It was a bit weird, being one of those significant others and being a bit older, but she was a college student up until June, so it’s not like she feels completely out of place.
She parks outside of Yost and texts Maggie, who directs her on which door to walk to. After an enthusiastic hug, she leads Melody through the back way into the arena, saying that the boys are already on the ice for warmups and that everyone is excited to meet her (“We’ve heard so much about you, from Luca and even from Adam last year, so we’re all really excited to meet you.”)
She gets introduced to Ellie and Kayleigh, Jacob and Rutger’s girlfriends respectively, and they’re so peppy and excited and nice that she doesn’t feel as nervous as she sits down as they immediately want to get to know more about her. They have decent seats, so she can see some of the players’ expressions if she looks hard enough. She immediately spots 63 and just smiles before turning back to the girls, not wanting to distract him from warmups, even though she finds herself eyeing him while talking. It isn’t until one of the guys, Ethan, if she remembers his number correctly, nudges Luca and nods in their direction does she smile and give a small wave. Even from this far, she sees him light up and wave back before focusing on warming up again.
The game, like any Michigan vs Michigan State one, is chippy, loud and exciting. She’s watched so many of Luca and Adam’s games growing up, yet she still finds herself nervously playing with her sleeves. Michigan ends up winning 2-1 and everyone’s in happy spirits as they leave the arena. She bids farewell to the girls and thanks them for letting her sit with them before Maggie’s back to lead her towards the locker room to meet up with Luca.
She waits patiently outside of the locker room with Maggie, just chatting casually, smiling when Kienan comes out and they embrace. Melody gives him a hug as well. The next guys to come out are Mark, Ethan and Seamus, who she remembers from last year and they all give her hugs before she wishes them a good holiday break. She tells them that they don’t have to stay and they all wave her off. (“Are you kidding? I’m not missing this reunion. Luca’s been talking about seeing you non-stop for forever.” Ethan jokes.)
They don’t have to wait long, as Luca’s the next one to come out. His cheeks are a bit flushed and he’s dressed in her favorite suit of his. His eyes dart all over until they meet hers. He immediately shrugs off his backpack and lifts Melody up in a hug. She lets out a little squeal and laughs as he spins her around.
“Hi.” She mutters into his shoulder.
“Hi angel.” He pulls away and kisses her twice. “I missed you.”
She pulls back and runs a hand through his hair with a light smile. “Missed you. Good game.” She looks beyond his shoulder to see the rest of his teammates smiling or smirking, some she recognizes, others she doesn’t. She detaches herself from him and nudges him. “Introduce me to your teammates.”
He groans playfully. “Do I have to?”
She rolls her eyes and smiles at the boys warmly. “Hi. I’m Melody, if we haven’t met.” She gives everybody a quick hug as the freshmen introduce themselves, laughing when Dylan wiggles her around.
Everyone’s a bit tired, so within 10 minutes, everyone’s saying goodbye and leaving the arena. She insists on driving Seamus, Rutger and Gavin since they all live together. When they get back, she’s helping him fold clothes to bring back to Toronto for break as he sits back on his bed, one hand behind his head and just looking at her. She’s grown out her hair and got a perm as a treat to herself after her first paycheck. And she had FaceTimed him immediately after she walked out of the salon, but seeing it in person is something entirely different. Still donned in his MIchigan crewneck that mysteriously disappeared from his closet over the summer and a yellow bow in her hair, she’s wearing flannel pajama pants now instead of jeans and folding a pair of his jeans before tossing it into his duffle and zipping it up. Luca’s suddenly overwhelmed by how blessed he is.
The next morning, after brunch at one of Luca’s favorite spots around campus, when they’re at the start of their drive back to Toronto and at a long stoplight, she remembers.
“Hey, Lu?”
“Hm?” He immediately looks at her and places a kiss on the back of her hand that he’s been holding.
“I love you.”
Luca’s eyes light up and she bites her lip so she doesn’t grin like a crazy woman. “Yeah?” He breathes out.
“Yeah. I love you.”
He leans to press a sweet kiss on her lips and then her cheek, and mutters against her skin. “I love you, angel. So much. Always have. Always will.”
And she chuckles under her breath when she tunes into what song is playing through the speakers of her car.
This love came back to her, indeed.

stand there like a ghost shaking come the rain, rain
it was a cold february night in ann arbor, michigan. y/n sat on her bed, calmly studying for a biology test she had the next morning. all while listening to the pouring rain outside her dorm window.
her roommate was out on a date with her boyfriend, leaving y/n alone for the night. she shut her biology textbook as she heard a knock on her door.
she got up from her bed, bare feet padding softly across the tiled floor.
she opens the door to find the absolute last person she expected to see.
“luca?” she said in pure confusion.
there he stood, clad in grey sweatpants and a dri-fit tee, drenched and shaking. the boy ran a hand through his hair as a small puddle began to pool beneath his feet.
she’ll open up the door and say, are you insane, -ane?
“what do you think you’re doing! are you insane?” she whisper-yelled, afraid of waking up her neighbors.
“yeah, probably” the older boy chuckled. she grabbed luca’s wrist, gently pulling him into her dorm. once he was inside, the y/h/c girl closed her door.
she immediately went to her closet grabbing a sweatshirt and sweatpants for the boy. “thank you” he mumbled as y/n placed the clothes in his arms.
say it's been a long six months and you were too afraid to tell her what you want, want
the fantilli boy emerged from the bathroom dressed in the dry clothes as y/n went back to studying.
“i came here for a reason, you know” he said breaking the silence. “why is that?” y/n asked pointedly, being diverted from her studying once again.
“it’s been a long six months, and the have been the hardest six months of my life” luca began. six months ago, y/n made the decision to end her two year relationship with the defenseman.
“luca you not listening to me” y/n cried “i get hockey is something you’re really passionate about and it requires dedication but the same goes for a relationship!” at this point, she had tears streaming out of her eyes.
luca had cancelled their weekly date night for the third week in a row, because he had hockey. y/n was gutted. the girl had a very rough day and all she wanted to do was spend time with her boyfriend.
“y/n this is my dream we’re dealing with! my dream to play in the nhl! and the only way i can do that is if i get better! this isn’t high school anymore y/n! this is my future and i can’t be slacking off” the boy raised his voice slightly.
“if i don’t get better than organizations won’t want me, and if they don’t want me what good is any of this” he said dejectedly, motioning to his dorm where the couple currently stood.
“luca don’t you think i know that!” y/n exclaimed. “all i ask is that you put at least a small amount of effort into our relationship” she cried.
“i am y/n!” luca yells. “but clearly my efforts aren’t enough” he says aggravated. “you know what luca…” y/n begins, “you don’t have to do anything anymore. go have fun with your team, because this” she motions between the two of them “is over.”
with tears in her eyes, y/n left the room of her now ex-boyfriend. luca followed her out calling her name, but she didn’t turn around. as much as it hurt, she knew it was for the better.
“yeah it has, hasn’t it” y/n reminiscing their relationship. “i gave my all to hockey and i should’ve given my all to you too” he sighed.
“i didn’t know what i wanted and i was scared” he continued “but i know now” luca walked towards the girl taking her soft hands in his.
and then you say i want you for worse or for better i would wait for ever and ever broke your heart, i'll put it back together i would wait for ever and ever
“i want you, y/n/n” he said looking deep into y/n’s eyes. “i want you to be by my side after big wins and big losses too. i know i broke your heart y/n” luca trails off as a tear slowly falls down his face.
“letting you go was the biggest mistake i think i’ve ever made. and i will wait for however long you want me to if it means i get to have you in my life again” y/n wipes the tears from his eyes and pulls the taller boy into a hug.
with her arms around his neck and his around her waist, the boy breaks down. “i still love you y/n” luca sobs, burying his face into the crook of the shorter girls neck.
“i love you too lu” y/n says, wiping the few tears that managed to escape from her eyes.
luca tightens his grip on y/n, afraid that if he were to let go, she would disappear.
“im so sorry. i was such a dick to you y/n. you never deserved that” he cries, sobs wracking through his body.
y/n loosens her grip on him, cupping his face in her hands. tears flood his hazel eyes and wet the palms of her hands.
“regardless of what you do, i will always love you lu, no matter what” she says looking lovingly into his eyes. she then pulled him into a passionate and love filled kiss.
“even if i kill someone?” the blonde boy says, pulling away. “it depends on who you kill, but i would most likely still love you” y/n giggles.
“i’m willing to give us another shot if you are” y/n says once their giggles die down. luca nods excitedly with a cheshire cat size smile on his face, playfully tackling y/n onto her bed.
while rolling around, luca peppers kisses on the girls face, eager to have her back. “i missed my girl” he said holding onto her tightly.
“i missed you too lu” she said with a smile. “i’ll love you forever and ever” he says mirroring the smile on his girlfriends face
“forever and ever?”
“forever and ever.”

request: Loved the Luca fic! Can you write one with him based on “you’re in love” by taylor?

one look, dark room, meant just for you
time moved too fast, you play it back
buttons on a coat, lighthearted joke
no proof, not much
but you saw enough
you weren’t drunk enough to truly enough the frat party luca had invited you too. you were chatting with a few girls from one of your classes, but your attention kept straying to your best friend of many years.
luca was undoubtedly your best friend. he was the reason behind a lot of your decisions - like committing to the university of michigan - and the reason why you struggle to talk to other guys at parties like these. because despite it all, you would always feel love for your best friend even if you couldn’t speak on that part out loud.
now of course you didn’t do everything for him but… sandbox love never dies. so when you discovered that michigan offered you a substantial scholarship… a school that your best friend coincidentally had committed to playing hockey for… how could you have turned it down?
“okay, and i swear the lectures never make any sense! like there’s no structure at all” the girls around you continue to talk but you were no longer paying attention. Luca had caught your eye, mouthing a quick you okay? from across the crowded room. you nod politely, and turn your attention back to the girls in front of you.
you're interrupted less than a minute later however when luca - grinning - taps on your shoulder. “you ready to go?” he asks, head so close to yours you could count his eyelashes if you wanted to.
“yeah just let me go grab my coat,” you reply, waving goodbye to your friends and taking hold of lucas hand so the two of you don’t get separated.
it takes a few minutes but you find your roommate gwen who was guarding your belongings for you, and you give her a quick hug before grabbing hold of all your things.
“are you guys leaving?” she asks, looking between you and your best friend with a knowing glint in her eyes.
luca nods and grabs your things from your hands. he has your purse slung around his shoulder and your coat held up for you to slip your arms into.
“yeah, luca’s tired” you joke, smiling back at him as you pull your arms through your jacket sleeves.
luca rolls his eyes and spins you around before buttoning up your coat for you. when he did things like this for you, you swore that it was impossible for your feelings to not be requited.
“tired of being bored because you ditched me, maybe!” luca smiles, your burgundy bag still sitting pretty on his shoulder.
“you're right, I should've known better! no party is fun without me,” your reply was meant to be taken as a joke but luca enthusiastically agrees with you.
“alright, well you guys drive safe! yn text me when you get back home. i might be late,” gwen says, her eyes catching on somebody in the distance.
“okay i will! love you, bye!” the two of you part ways, and luca immediately slips his hand back in yours under the guise of “not being separated…”
Small talk, he drives
coffee at midnights
the light reflects
the chain on your neck
lucas passenger side isn’t an uncommon place for you. everything about his car felt familiar. he had bought it used back in freshman year, and it was beat to all hell with the amount of hockey boys and trips it’s been through.
“hey, did you hear that rutger got a girlfriend?” luca asks about five minutes into the drive. car rides between the two of you were mostly in comfortable silence, neither of you needing to say much to enjoy your time together.
“no i didnt. is she nice?” you respond, letting your gaze shift from the dark streets in front of you to the boy beside you.
“yeah, i think you’d really like her,” the conversation falls flat after that. you can’t help but pay attention to luca. his grown out hair, the way his hand flexed around the steering wheel… how the light is hitting the chain hanging from his neck just right.
with all the years you’ve spent with luca, you’ve never once got tired of the sight of him. even when the two of you were back in toronto and he had braces with all the hideous band colours.
you would also never get tired of his company. it was all just so easy being with him like this. even though you wanted more, you thought that it always going to be enough to just be his best friend.
“do you want to get coffee?” lucas voice breaks through your thoughts, and your smile becomes impossibly wider. coffee at midnight - as strange as it sounds - became yours and lucas tradition ever since your first final season when the two of you were exhausted and in desperate need of caffeine. luca had managed to find the only coffee shop in ann arbor that was still open, and ever since then the tradition had continued.
he says, “look up”
and your shoulders brush
no proof, one touch
but you felt enough
luca was at your usual spot in less than ten minutes, parking the car and rushing over to your door to open it. which was another one of your many traditions. you had seen it in a romcom once, something so simple and yet so charming at the same time, and since then whenever he could luca would open your door for you.
“look up,” luca says, gesturing up to the sky adorned with hundreds of stars.
you look up, shoulders brushing against lucas when you feel the familiar rush of butterflies in your stomach.
luca looks down at you, a soft smile on his face as he appreciates you without you noticing.
you can hear it in the silence
you can feel it on the way home
you can see it with the lights out
you are in love
true love
you are in love
the coffee shop is quiet when you enter, and you order yours and lucas coffees to-go. while you're waiting, you catch lucas gaze on you and your cheeks heat up accordingly. you were so in love with him…
“i’ve got one sugar one cream, and two creams two sugars!” a barista calls out and you immediately grab your coffees.
back in the car luca asks you a question, “do you want to stay at my place tonight?” now, this wasn’t something unfamiliar for you two but every time he asked it still felt like the first time. it felt like how it did years ago, like giggles and blushes and unspoken feelings.
you easily accept, “yeah sounds good. i don’t have any of my things though”
“I bought you a toothbrush when i went to the store last week,” luca flashes you a smile.
“a little bit presumptuous huh?” you tease. whenever you’ve gone to lucas before it was always pre-planned. therefore there was no reason for you to leave any of your stuff at his place.
“oh i knew it’d happen eventually,” he jokes. “I know you love me,” luca smiles again and your heart races. could he know? has he known all these years?
when you don’t immediately respond, luca frowns. “you're my best friend… i’d hope you’d love me?”
you shake your head to rid yourself of your thoughts. “no, of course i love you. my best friend forever!” you sing, hoping that you’ve masked your feelings well. there was absolutely no way - even if there were multiple signs that luca loved you - that you were going to confess your feelings. you weren’t going to risk your many years of friendship on something that he may not actually feel.
yn to gwen: hey! there’s been a change of plans and i’m staying at lucas tonight. be safe tonight!
gwen: ok!!! you be safe too🤭
morning, his place
burnt toast, sunday
you keep his shirt
lucas sheets are cold, and you know that because you're tangled in them. you push your hair out of your face and sit up in bed, quickly noticing your best friend’s absence.
you let yourself adjust to your surroundings for a moment, before a whiff of something burnt reaches your nose.
“luca?” you call out, before getting out of his bed and making your way into the kitchen.
luca was standing there in his pajamas, trying and failing miserably to cook breakfast. he looks up at the sound of your voice, eyes trailing your body as he takes in your outfit.
“i’m loving the look,” he says, referring to his shirt and sweats you borrowed last night.
you roll your eyes, laughing lightly as you walk up to luca to assess the damages he's done to the food. “how is it that you’re 21 and don’t know how to cook?”
“aht! aht! aht! this is gourmet!” he gestures towards two messy plates.
“ah sorry!” you amend. “i wasn’t familiar with your work”
“yes! this is the great fantilli breakfast which i am proud to serve…” he passes you a plate and you smile up at him as you lean against his counter.
the two of you eat in silence for a while before luca pauses and looks up at you. “you should keep that shirt by the way,” he says, completely catching you off guard.
you wipe the crumbs from the corner of your mouth, “really?” you set your plate to the side.
“yeah it looks really good on you,”
you hum in agreement, twirling around in the kitchen so luca can see the full effect of his shirt. “i think i look really good in your car too!” you tease and luca sets his plate down.
“oh yeah?” he replies, smirking.
“mhmm think i might have to keep it,” you advance towards luca playfully, grabbing ahold of his hands when you finally reach him.
luca squeezes your hands, “sorry but the car comes with me,”
you pause for a minute, pretending to contemplate whether the car, luca included, was worth it. “i think… i can find a place for you!”
“oh you think?” luca laughs, breaking apart from your hold to tickle your sides.
“okay i know so!” you pant, trying but failing to break free from lucas grasp.
“hmm.. I don’t think i heard you…” he teases, not pausing from his tickling.
“okay okay! I want you and the car!” you yell, and when luca stops his attacks on your sides you fall against him. he wraps his arms around you and all of sudden you feel the butterflies from earlier float from your stomach and up to your chest.
he keeps his word
and for once, you let go
of your fears and your ghosts
luca drives you home later that afternoon. you're clad in his t-shirt and your jeans from last night, and for a moment you allow yourself to forget about your rules and to imagine what it’d be like if luca was really your boyfriend.
one step, not much
but it said enough
you kiss on sidewalks
you fight, then you talk
months go by and you two are still in the same positions that you’ve always been in - helplessly in love but too afraid to say anything.
it was graduation weekend, 4 long years of university long gone and so were your childhood years well beyond that. you hold luca’s hand comfortably as the two of you walk around campus one last time as students. the sun was setting, and there was nowhere else that you would rather be.
“remember first year when we were walking to the library and some girl came up to you and asked you for your phone number? did you give it to her? i can't remember anymore,” you ask mindlessly.
luca hums in acknowledgement, “yeah i remember. but no i didn’t give it to her,” he responds, squeezing your hand. “remember when that guy… what's his name? from the football team spilt his drink on your top at the first party we went to here?”
you snort, recalling the memory. “yeah, and then he asked me to dance”
“did you dance with him? i can't remember,” luca asks.
you lead luca forward, “no i didn’t”
the two of you send each other knowing glances but neither of you acknowledges the obvious truth between the two of you. you were both in love.
when you get to a crosswalk you pause and turn to luca. “remember in second when i was late for econ and i almost got hit by a car because i was running and didn’t look before crossing the road?” that was an awful day. everything had been going wrong but there had been one nice moment… luca had brought you dinner at the end of the day and the two of you sat together as you both ranted about how much harder second year was turning out to be.
luca doesn’t respond, and when you look up at him he blanks. “lu…?”
you hadn’t even realized that he was moving towards you until he kissed you. lips soft as they brushed against yours in an impossibly tender kiss. it lasts a few seconds, and when luca pulls away you sigh.
“wow…” “i’m sorry, i don’t know why i did that” you both speak at the same time, both of your tones are drastically different.
“oh” your shock was clearly evident because luca started back pedaling.
“like it was nice but i don't…”
“don't what…”
luca is the one to sigh this time and it’s not out of pleasure. “we’re best friends i shouldn’t have done that,”
at first you were hurt, but then you were angry. who cared if you were best friends? you felt so strongly about luca and now more than ever you knew he felt that same way. “luca-”
“no we don’t have to talk about this, really. it was a mistake and it won’t happen again,” he assures you, and your heart breaks. you nod silently, biting the inside of your cheek as you drop lucas hand and turn back to where you had just walked from.
“i think i’m going to head back now… it's getting kind of chilly,” you lie, just wanting to be free from luca.
luca starts to shrug off his sweater but you hold one of your hands up to stop him. “no, you should have it” he tries again but you still don’t let him give you his sweater.
you let out a weak laugh, thinking back to the time luca had given you his shirt earlier in the year. you had let yourself think that he liked you back… “i’m fine, thanks” is all you say before you start to walk back to your apartment. this time instead of holding hands, you're holding yourself.
weeks later this moment becomes insignificant to the both of you, but that doesn’t mean you still don’t reflect on it whenever luca shows any type of affection towards you.
one night, he wakes
strange look on his face
pauses, then says
“you’re my best friend”
and you knew what it was
he’s in love
graduation is long over now, and your first summer out of school treats you with kindness. yours and lucas friends had decided to rent a beach house along the coast of florida, and so for the past week you’ve done nothing but drink and lounge happily with your group of people.
rutgers girlfriend, you were quick to find out, was insanely nice and kind. the two of you had grown close, and so it came to no surprise that when luca spotted rutgers girlfriend outside, that you were close by.
“i’m headed off to bed,” luca says, slinging an arm around your shoulder. “just thought i’d let you know so you don’t go looking for me,” he jokes, pulling you into his side like any boyfriend would. except you werent dating, and the bed he was referring to was being shared between the two of you since there weren't enough rooms for everybody to get their own.
“okay, i’ll meet you in a bit,” you respond, breaking eye contact with rutgers girlfriend and turning your attention to your best friend.
“sounds good,” is all luca says before dropping his arm and sauntering back into the house. you wish your eyes knew better than to trail after him and yet… you couldn’t help but stare at his back muscles as he retreated. it was going to be a long summer…
when you crawled into bed that night, luca was already asleep. you stare up at the ceiling fan, wondering if you’d ever fall out of luca. it was getting too hard to love him.
luca always had some strange extra sense when it came to you. so it came to no shock that he had awoken shortly after you had laid down. you turned your head away from the ceiling and onto the brunette boy laying next to you.
“you’re my best friend,” luca mumbles, moonlight from the open window casting a soft glow onto his face.
“you’re my best friend too,” you reply simply, voice breaking slightly as you realize the weight of your words. best friends… it was all you were ever going to be.
“no, don’t be upset…” luca whispers, wiping away the tears that were rolling down your face. the genuine concern on his face made you want to cry harder. his first thought was always to protect you.
“i’m sorry,”
“no sorry,” he slurs, sleep catching up to him.
you don’t say anything in reply, opting for the silence to wash over the two of you once more. luca didn’t remember this exchange in the morning.
you can hear it in the silence
you can feel it on the way home
you can see it with the lights out
you are in love
true love
you are in love
once the trip is over you fly back to your family home in toronto. you busy yourself with work and childhood friends, and things start to become a new normal for you. now that you and luca weren’t living in michigan anymore, your hang outs became much more sparse.
or at least, until adam had a game against the leafs and luca had sent you tickets to watch the game with him.
you sat next to luca during the game, shoulders brushing and smiles exchanged. and you so desperately knew that even if neither of you could vocalize your feelings, there would always be love between you.
you two are dancing in a snow globe ‘round and ‘round
and he keeps a picture of you in his office downtown
and you understand now why they lost their minds and fought the wars
and why i’ve spent my whole life trying to put it into words
five years go by and you and luca are still close friends. though instead of midnight coffee and study sessions it’s a quick lunch and texts between work tasks.
tonight was different though, because you were being promoted at work and so you dressed up in your finest attire for the dinner being thrown in your honour. you had told luca all about it, and when you stood up in front of your colleagues and their spouses to accept your new position in the company, you were delighted to catch a glimpse of luca amongst the crowd.
when everything was over and done, you walk as fast as you can to luca. “lu you’re here!” you shriek, throwing yourself into his open arms. the two of you rock back and forth for a moment, completely enamoured with one another.
“of course I'm here! i'm so proud of you,” he smiles widely, never dropping his arms from around you.
“thank you for being here,” you mirror his smile, giggling slightly when you realize his attention is still solely on you.
‘cause you can hear it in the silence
you can feel it on the way home
at the end of the night luca drives you home instead of letting you take an uber. his car is much nicer now that he’s out of university, and you want to make a joke similar to the one from all those years ago… something about wanting his car and him, but you can't remember it properly enough to recite it.
you can see it with the lights out
you are in love
true love
you are in love
when you're parked, luca steps out first and rounds the front of his car. he opens your door as he did all those years before, and all the butterflies from years prior seem to find their wings again as they start to flutter. you’re in love.
“thank you,” you say as you step out of luca’s car. you look up at the night sky, to be pleasantly surprised by the amount of stars that rarely grace the toronto skyline. “luca look up,” you tug on his blazer sleeve.
when luca meets your gaze and looks up at the sky, he can only think of one thing. he’s in love.
“yn…” luca whispers just as you tilt your head to face him.
“luca…” you turn your body towards him, both of you are still standing right next to lucas car in your parking lot.
before you can doubt yourself, you’re leaning over and grazing your lips against your best friends. luca doesn’t pause this time, instead he pulls you closer to him as he deepens your kiss. you sling your arms around his shoulders, and his hand rests itself on the back of your head.
when you pull apart you're both breathing heavily. “wow…” “wow…” you both echo each other and luca leans his forehead against yours.
“i’m sorry if this is too soon but… i love you,”
you can’t help but giggle at his words. “lu we’ve been waiting for what seems like a lifetime,” you slip your lips back against his and pull apart much sooner than you would like. “i love you too,”
“good,” luca’s smile is breathtaking. “because i’m never letting you go again,”
you tighten your grip around his neck and you let your hand find its rightful place in the hairs at the back of his neck. “who says i was going to let you?” you hum. “i’ve waited way too long for this,”
luca’s lips are on yours again, and for a moment it feels like you can't breathe between the love coursing through your veins and all the butterflies. “way too long,” luca whispers as he pulls his lips away from yours.
you can feel it on the way home
you can see it with the lights out
you are in love
true love
you are in love

Goodbye goodbye goodbye
Tumblr media
-
Y/N Edwards, Lucas girlfriend and Ethan’s sister has been battling cancer for over two years now.
Luca has been by her side for all of it.
But recently she’s been getting worse.
Alot worse.
Adam decided to arange something special for the two of them.
Two months ago Luca went to Adam.
“I swear to god man, I’m going to marry her” Luca says looking over at the sleeping girl.
“Oh yeah?” Adam smiles. “She’s the one” Luca says with a smile plastered on his face.
And that’s why Adam knew he had to make this happen for the both of them.
As much as they don’t want to admit it, her time on earth is coming to a end.
There’s a hockey game against Michigan state coming up and Adam decided that this would be the perfect opportunity.
“So you down?” Adam asks Y/N after explaining what would happen. She gives him a soft smile and nods.
No one is accepting the fact that she’s dying besides her and Adam.
Two days later and her conditions are worse.
They both knew that this had to happen tonight.
So before the game started they announced Luca to go to the middle of the ring and shortly after that the lights turned off and y/n came in.
“What is happening?” Luca smiles at the girl. “Luca” her voice cracks. Music starts playing and everyone turns on their flashlights.
He catches on to what’s happening.
He begins to tear up and shake his head.
“It’s not going to be long honey” Y/N cries. Luca shakes his head more, now fully crying.
“Luca I love you so much” the girl says as she begins to sway back and forth to the music the best she could considering how weak she is. Luca is holding her up to help.
They both begin to cry and sway to the music, soaking up everything.
“I love you so much” Luca says still crying, kissing her forehead. “I love you more” the girl says also crying.
They both didn’t want to let go but Luca and her knew that it would be better for the both of them if he goes and plays the game.
Luca walks her out of the tunnel and even though y/n argues about it he walks her up to her seat next to her parents.
She was sitting front row right next the bench.
Luca scored and he raced over to where she was seated.
She had a smile on her face while he points to her and celebrates with his team.
After the game y/n goes down to the tunnel.
At this point she was so weak but she pushed through for her boy.
“Hi” Luca smiles at the sight of her.
They get a quick pic and talk for a little bit before he goes and changes.
He tried to be quick but when he came out it was to late.
She was sitting limp on a bench with her parents crying next to her.
His face goes white and he immediately has the urge to throw up.
And he does.
He starts sobbing.
They were all crying so loud that the locker room could hear.
Ethan immediately rushed out.
He saw something he wish he never would have to..
His dead baby sister
He begins crying aswell
The locker room resumes their cheering for winning when their coach comes in.
“Guys!” He yells. Everyone does quiet and knows something is wrong with the look on his face.
“Y/N died in the room over so we” he gets cut off my Adam running out to comfort Luca.
“Uhm we need to be quiet and respectful for the family and uhm no practice tomorrow” is all he says before waking out.
Some of the guys begin crying as well
Luca was fall in wailing in Adam arms.
Y/N is gone.
Lucas worse nightmare has come true.
“Why not me” he sobs looking at the ring in his hand.

congrats on your milestone!! can i request 🃏 for something fluffy with if he wanted to he would au 😊
requests are still open for the celly!!
“i was thinking that we should go and see adam play. i mean my parents are going, so we should too,” luca announced while sitting with you at his dining room table. you glance up from your school work, smiling at him. “if you want me to babe, i’ll come with you,” you answered, waiting for his response.
“you know i want you by my side wherever i am,” he replied, taking a hold of your hand as his thumb rubs over the back of your palm. “plus adam likes you too,” he continued, shooting you a cheeky grin. you playfully roll your eyes, nodding your head at his words. luca blushed at the teasing, but couldn’t even try to refute your words; he was utterly obsessed with you.
a couple days later, you were seated at the glass with luca and his parents. they all had on columbus gear in some capacity, but you were wearing a bright maize colored t-shirt. to some, it may seem strange, but you adam gave you the shirt when you visited luca this past summer, so it held sentimental value, much like tonight.
“can we get a picture?” you asked, and luca smiled, moving closer to your side. you scoffed at him, “with the whole fam lu.” he pouted, but you could see the happiness in his eyes. “of course sweetheart,” his mom answered, and you turned to ask the people in front of you to snap a photo. then you turned to luca, placing a kiss on his cheek while the camera was in selfie mode. he didn’t expect it, which made the picture even more perfect.
just as he was about to say something, there was a loud bang on the glass. standing in front of you was adam, and he was glaring daggers at you. he gestured from his eyes to you, signaling that he was always watching. you laughed at the teasing, holding your hands up in a surrender motion, but luca's arm wrapped tightly around your shoulders.

Spa night - Luca Fantilli
“ He was the red and orange hue from a bonfire, the happiness during summer sunsets. The laughter in the brightest moments and everything in between. He was all I will ever need and all I will ever want in human form. He was my person “
really short Luca blurb bc I had the idea and I didn’t know what to do with it
Tumblr media
Lying wrapped in Luca’s arms, one leg splayed across his hips to get as close as possible, the fuzzy blanket he got for Christmas spread over us on the dorm room bed. All I could feel was content. Content to be in his presence and just enjoying the warmth and occasional quick kiss he places on my skin.
I’d stopped paying attention to the tv show Luca started on his computer about and hour ago. Murmuring in agreement every time he said something. If he noticed my lack of engagement on said show he didn’t point it out.
Luca nudges my hip with his hand that was previously resting on the bottom of my stomach. Thinking he simply wanted me to move I start shuffling around, waiting for him to give the ‘okey’.
“Baby.” A small airy laugh passes his lips, the sound having me lift my head up. Eyebrows furrowed in confusion. “Huh? Wait do you have plans I forgot about? Do I need to go?” Apologies start spilling from my lips before I have time to process the lopsided smile on my boyfriends expression.
“No stop, baby-“ Luca grabs my cheeks in his palms. Right thumb rubbing circles on the pink tinted skin. “I just wanted to ask if maybe we can do your skin care routine? If you want.” Now it’s Luca’s cheeks that turn flushed. Expect that his are tinted from nerves and expectation to have me laugh at his request and not the warmth from being under a blanket in sweatpants and a thick shirt.
“You want to do my skin care routine with me?” Giddiness tingles all over my body at the thought. Corners of my lips tilting upwards into a smile that’s all teeth and dimples.
“Well..yeah.” His response comes out as a squeak, small and shy. Almost tumbling to the floor in the hurry of getting out of bed, legs tangled in the blankets I scurry to the small conjoined bathroom Luca has the luxury of having.
Holding up two different types of face masks and fluffy headbands I flash Luca a smile. “Do you wanna be the teddy bear or the cow? Personally I think you’re a cuddly bear.”

country lovin' ~ l. fantilli
summary: she's always loved country music, he was raised by two country haters. what could go wrong when he's dragged to the local country bar and sees her in her element?
a.n. i have no idea where this is coming from. call it the alberta girl in me but god have i grown to love country music. as always, this is completely self indulgent, so enjoy my dr pepper fueled rants about luca, loves <3
this was the opposite of what luca had in mind for a fun saturday night. he was thinking a drink at skeeps, maybe some bowling if they weren't feeling a bar. the last place he expected to be dragged to was this dingy country bar just outside the city, guys in boots and jeans and girls in those tiny denim shorts and short tank tops screaming 'here for the party' at the top of their lungs. most of the guys had found someone to pursue, most of the girls counting themselves lucky to be hit on by the hockey guys in their matching cowboy hats.
except for luca. the sophomore was nursing a beer and basically throwing daggers at rutger with his eyes from across the bar. it had been rut's brilliant idea to check this place out and now that they were here, luca couldn't wait to leave. he was tired of watching rut and his girlfriend two-step, wanted to throw up every time ethan made another girl laugh. it didn't help that he hadn't seen one girl he wanted to talk to.
"you look bored out of your mind." he looked over and almost fell out of his chair. the girl who spoke was sporting an amused smirk, hair pulled up out of her face. she had those goddamn shorts on and a tank top that read 'gas, grass, or ass: no one rides for free' that was just a little shorter than it should've been. he could feel himself eager to talk to her, to know who she was.
"i'm not much of a country guy."
she quirks an eyebrow. "no? funny, you seemed to really be enjoying yourself."
his laughter comes easily, trying not to notice how she slides closer to him when he speaks next. "it's not that bad, i guess. i was just raised to hate it so i don't know if i could ever truly like it. plus i'm a terrible dancer and that seems to be what everyone's doing."
he knows he's fucked when she holds out her hand. "i'll teach you. i've known how to two-step since i was a toddler, city boy, you won't have a chance to embarrass yourself if you follow my lead."
he takes her hand, allowing her to pull him up off his seat and towards the dance floor. he flips dylan off when he wolf whistles but it just makes the girl in front of him laugh loudly. once they're on the dance floor she turns to him, guiding his hand to her waist and putting his other in hers.
'big green tractor' starts to play, making a soft smile play on her lips while she guides him through the movements. it's a slow song and it lets him pull her closer, gaining a bit of confidence as he realizes just how easy it is. they introduce themselves to each other, quietly talking about basically anything under the sun while one song passes, then two. he learns that she's from tennessee, her favourite colour is lavender, that she loves football and has three older brothers. he tells her about hockey, his brother, his favourite restaurants around ann arbour.
they’re sat at a table after their dancing, still talking. his hand has made it’s way to her waist and hers is tangled in his free one, and they’re so close luca knows he could just shift a little and get her lips on his.
“what’re you thinking about, lu?”
his mouth shifts in a small smile. “‘m thinking about you, of course.”
she blushes lightly and stands. “i need a drink. do you want anything?”
he nods, giving her his drink order and laughing lightly when she takes his hat off his head and places it on her own before sauntering up to the bar.
“dude, you are so getting laid tonight.”
luca rolls his eyes at ethan as he comes up to the table. “i don’t know what you’re talking about.”
he narrowly dodges a smack to the head. “hey! what the fuck was that for?”
“there’s a rule, dumbass.” ethan sighs when luca stares at him blankly, tapping his own cowboy hat. “wear the hat, ride the cowboy.”
luca’s eyes widen in realization, turning his gaze to his the girl at the bar. “you really think that’s what she wants?”
ethan’s mouth tilts up. “i think so. i also know it’s what you want, you’ve been practically drooling over her all night.” this time ethan dodges a smack as he laughs and walks away.
“what was that all about?” she asks as she comes back over, handing him his drink and sliding in beside him again. he shakes his head, wrapping his arm around her waist and tugging her closer. “nothin’. hey, do you want to get out of here?”
her eyes widen as they turn on him. “yes. do you?”
he nods, adjusting the hat on her head. “wear the hat, ride the cowboy, yeah? i think you should own up to your rule.”
her mouth tilts to the side in a smirk. “well i’m nothing if not a rule follower, city boy.”
a.n. part two anyone?? spicy part two maybe 😏 also yeah i just wanna see luca in a cowboy hat, what about it?
