That pre-World Champs altitude swim session with Lucy Charles Barclay in Cedar City. : And the first session I got to try out my new @liquideyewaterhousings underwater housing for the Canon R3 (& RF15-35) : I managed to grab a few stills in between shooting video content for the Ironman race series ‘A Fighting Chance’ (on YouTube). : It was hard enough holding my breath underwater for any length of time, due to the pool being at altitude in Cedar City, but the hardest part was to keep the housing underwater long enough being so buoyant with the air trapped inside it. It’s also why I’m wearing a rash vest to try and make myself as less buoyant as possible. : The following session I rented dive weights, 4lbs attached to the housing and 4lbs attached to my waist. 4lbs (1.8kg). Wow. Guess the pro triathlete? I just found this gem of a pic from @ironmanlanzarote 2016 in Lightroom on my iPad, which then set me on a trip down memory lane. : : The IM Lanzarote 2021 edition of this iconic race is only a couple of weekends away, so these pics were too good not to share. : In case you didn’t already guess, this is @lucycharles93 - pics 1 & 2 - in her first pro season on the long distance circuit, and what a race that was. She finished 3rd female overall in 10:10:13 … impressive enough. : However, she returned the following year in 2017 - pics 3 to 8 - smashing her previous time the year before by 35mins, going on to win her first ever title as a pro in 9:35:40. : : If you notice closely at the 2017 pics, we created the ‘Lucy Charles’ branded bike.. this was after Boardman dropped all their sponsored triathletes - including the Brownlee’s - so we made this one a special edition 😁 .. it proved fruitful. Lucy went on to win, but also win the hearts of new sponsors.🙌🏻 : : It’s great to look back on these images from 5 years ago, and to see the progress Lucy has made. There was no doubt that she would eventually become a superstar. : Since 2010 I’ve been shooting this race officially, taking time out in 2013, 14 & 15 to compete. Kings & Queens of Kona . . . #BartAernouts In the last few years, Bart has been racing well in Kona, with a second place finish last year as his best result. Still, the quiet Belgian probably won't factor in many race predictions. This is partly because he loses a fair chunk of time in the swim (around 6 minutes to Jan Frodeno), and while he has improved his bike in recent years, he hasn't yet become a "bike powerhouse" on the level of Sebastian Kienle or Cam Wurf. His real strength is on the run, especially in the Kona heat. He's one of the few athletes with a sub-2:45 run potential in Kona, and that run speed is what he'll need in order to finish on the Kona podium. .................................................. In her last three IM-distance races Lucy has shown that she is no longer "just" a swim specialist. She's been consistently riding one of the fastest bike splits and her run has improved as well. As she continues to outswim most of her competition by about six minutes, it will require a very patient "catching up all day long" strategy to beat her. The last two years Daniela Ryf has been able to catch up to her on the bike – maybe this year Lucy will ride even faster to at least make it a race well into the marathon. It'll also be very interesting to see how the gaps between Lucy and the rest of the field will develop and if anyone other than Daniela will have a chance to overtake her this year. ..................................................
