Just finished Sistersong by Lucy Holland! This was a bit of an impulse book I bought last year, as I fancied some historical fantasy, and this had been highly recommended. The story is a retelling of the traditional Murder Ballad “The Twa Sisters” and I won’t say any more on that as it’ll spoil the novel for you! The story is about 3 sisters who live in Post-Roman Devon/Cornwall faced with the encroaching Saxon army and the Christianisation of their old ways of life. Conflict originates from many different places in the sisters’ lives, most of all from within their own family. By the end of the story, again without being too spoilery, they’re each no longer the people they started out as in the story. Primarily this is a novel about change but also; family, loss, identity, war and magic. Lots of magic! This book also does something that good historical based fiction should do; it holds up a mirror to the modern day and tries to make us reflect of where we may have been over a thousand years ago, and where we could be now.
