Divided and decrepit. Age grinds down the form you see. Smoothness dissolves into a dry heap of waste product. By-products dissipate the nearby. Bone is born under flesh. Underneath. Stable. Defiant in Death as the last reminder.

Eric William Carroll and Camera-less Photography
Secondary Research / Artist Research
Tumblr media
While researching camera-less photography, I came across a video document on Eric William Carroll's creation process.
In the document, Carroll explained that as modern photography has gotten easier, to create art, he wanted to make the process of photographing a little bit more challenging for himself so he turned to camera-less photography.
During the document, we get to see Carroll’s work process as he captures the shadows of nature for his contemporary collection Blue Line of Woods (2010-2015). He uses big sheets of light-sensitive blue line paper that activate in the sunlight and create the image using the contrast of light and shadow. Carroll runs the sheets through an ammonia fume processor which turns the yellow pigment of the diazo salt on the sheets into a beautiful blue, creating this capturing atmosphere.

In an instant, I was amazed by his work. I've always enjoyed observing the contrast and the movements of the shadows created by foliage. Carroll's introduction to this way of capturing shadows which is completely new to me was absolutely mindblowing, especially when considering the scale he works on. Observing Shadows of different daily situations would be very interesting using this medium.
Carroll also brings up how the images on the sheets will change color and fade when time passes and how the ephemerality of the images strips away the preciousness of the photograph itself, making the whole creation process and exhibition part of the piece.

'Existing at the intersection of photography and sculpture, my work investigates our wider human experience through light, perception and space. I fabricate reflective tools from bent metal and glass to make new photographic documents through the lumen print process, in which exposures of different light sources are registered on gelatin silver paper. Oscillating between two-dimensional images and three-dimensional objects, my compositions merge organic embodied forms with the natural world, anchoring my place within a universal experience. The photographic figures grow and diminish under sunlight and artificial sources, transforming my space into a recording studio dictated by my own conditions of time. Exploring themes of embodiment and cosmology, my practice integrates the sinuous movement and sensuous contours of light. Curvilinear waves glance off of elliptical arcs in forms which refer to both the otherworldly and the corporeal – astral movements and organic femme bodies; they embrace sensuality inspired by my personal embodiment practice, a intuitive-movement meditation which I use to enhance my senses and relationship with my physical body and surroundings. The color palette, compositions, and time exposures emerge from an intuitive desire to break away from photography's prevailing masculine characteristics: technicality, distance, and control. My work is simultaneously personal and universal, connecting the ever-changing state of light and time with the fluctuations of physical and emotional movement.' - Rachelle Bussières #RachelleBussieres #JohanssonProjects #lumenprints #womenartists #womensupportingwomen (at Johansson Projects) https://www.instagram.com/p/Ci-ikPlrmq0/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Anna Vovan: Letters (slid under a door)
Zeitraum: 26.11.2022–11.12.2022
Vernissage: 26.11.22 | 19:00 Uhr
Öffnungszeiten: FR–SA 18.00–22.00 Uhr | SO 15.00–19.00 Uhr
