Cursed thought:
What if Ranger Academy is only half of this special. What if there's another half?
Hear me out. 3 main characters. In what looks like some fancy (and unfortunately cop-adjacent) attire. We seem to have a very serious and by-the-book person, a confident red-haired person, and a cheerful individual with hair dyed partially green.
My theory is that there's gonna be another secret cover on the back, if you flip the comic over. And this cover is gonna have 3 completely different people, who may or may not be intergalactic phantom thieves.
Sherlock Holmes and Arsene Lupin are in public domain, and the comics aren't against adapting series that the show doesn't.
(sorry for inflicting this cursed potential idea on your inbox)
idk because Boom still has yet to prove they can adapt an unused Sentai without killing them off at the end of their debut

Kairi definitely stole Keiichiro's heart throughout the series!
I really miss these two! I wish we could get another season.

the determined Lupinrangers // the dazzling Patrangers
This is something I’ve been working on for a while to help bring me out of my art block and it’s finally done! I really love role swaps, so I decided to try one out for LupinPat ^-^
I’m also writing a fic that goes with this which focuses on why each of the Lupins and Pats took up their opposing roles! You can read it at AO3~ ( ´ ▽ ` )ノ
[twitter // ko-fi]
(design notes + masked lupins under the read more!)
*cracks knuckles* so I guess I’ll just discuss this in the order that I made these!
First off, I just wanted to say I based the Lupin!Pats off of their counterparts but I also wanted their own personalities to be reflected in their thief costumes; likewise, even though the Pat!Lupins wear uniforms, I tried to capture their personalities as best I could
So starting with Tsukasa, I decided to give her something that was elegant, yet cute to reflect the side of her that likes cute things and also i just wanted an excuse to draw tsukasa in lolita. Her dress is based off Rabbit Teeth ~Ode to Napoleon~ while keeping aspects of Umika’s costume (like the tiny hat and pins)
I thought Kairi’s costume was a little too fancy for Keiichiro?? Personally I thought something more simple would be more fitting for him, so I gave him a three piece suit and a flat brim fedora. I think he kinda looks like a mobster lol
Also I just need everyone to know this, but I googled “fancy watches” for a reference for Keiichiro’s watch and like??? watches are so expensive??? This is the one I chose as reference and it’s like $15k?????????? why do you need to spend so much to read time????? anyways thank u i just need to share how much fashion and its prices baffle me
Moving onto Sakuya, I thought that out of the three, he’d be the most into the whole phantom thieves gimmick and thus would be really fancy haha so I gave him a tuxedo and a top hat. he would totally put on a cape and try to be like tuxedo mask if not for keiichiro and tsukasa
(Also yea, I just used textures for Keiichiro and Sakuya’s costumes lol...... ain’t got the patience to create my own design or mimic Kairi’s and Touma’s www)
just an idea I have about where the Lupin!Pats got their costumes: I headcanon that Umika designed and made the Lupins’ costumes, so I also imagine that she also made the ones for the Lupin!Pats -- not that she meant it for them specifically lol while she was still a student, someone (Kogure in ~disguise~, assuming that this is all indeed an elaborate plot) commissioned her to make these costumes though they never really explained why. Still, they offered a lot of money, so she did it www. Needless to say, she was shocked when she saw the costumes in action haha
Anyhow, the Pat!Lupins! They just have the standard GSPO uniforms, but like I said, I tried to show their personalities. Touma wears the GSPO watch and though he keeps his jacket zipped all the way, his pants aren’t tucked into his boots.
I figure Kairi would be kinda “lazy” with his uniform, not zipping it nor keeping his pants tucked into his boots. Not shown, but he’s wearing the GSPO bracelet (which P-Bandai took down for some reason :c).
I really adore Umika being a fashion designer and having her own sense of style and I really didn’t wanna lose that part of her... it was a bit of a challenge since it’s like how can you show that while still adhering to the uniform? Her hair would cover her earrings www but I also gave her the GSPO bracelet, and I gave her a lil necklace based on the Pats’ badge haha
and as promised, here’s the Pat!Lupins with their masks~
Tumblr media
I got kinda (more like really) lazy with the masks tbh lol _(:3
aaand that’s about it I think! Thank you for taking the time to read this~!

- Don’t take me lightly. While we’re cooperating for now, I’m thinking of how best to use you to beat her.
- You say that, but I might be the one who ends up using you.
- Interesting. Go ahead, if you can.

Umika’s Style: Episode 7 Analysis
Hi hi! This hit me just as I was about to go to bed last night and originally I wanted to make a gif set (I probably will still make one for later haha), but I thought this was too much to just tack onto the tags and deserved its own post www In retrospect this is probably obvious, but I got super excited when I thought about it and already opened up a new post so here we go lol
So this is the scene that sparked my thoughts:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
During my first viewing, this seemed like a pretty innocuousness comment. Sakuya likes Umika, of course he wants to compliment her, right? But as I was watching things again, I realized this actually hits a big part of Umika’s character based on what we know so far
(continued under the read more)
Earlier we see some flashbacks of Umika’s past and initially I viewed them as the typical bullying kids do
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kids are mean, kids are cruel; they’ll take the most superficial stuff and ostracize others for it, including clothes. Again, to me, this didn’t seem like anything more than the Sad Backstory™ to develop Umika further. But it was later on that I noticed that this hurts Umika deeper than simply for her appearance.
Tumblr media
Remember this adorable drawing of hers, that she covered up because those bullies were making fun of her?
Tumblr media
Here it is again -- but this time, the drawing has been made reality. What a cute dress, isn’t it? Let’s zoom out a bit.
Tumblr media
Okay, I’m probably super dense, but it took me a couple of viewings to realize that this is a sewing room.
The focus of this scene is Shiho, so they don’t really call attention to what room this is but there’s so many designs and clothes on the walls, a sewing machine and materials all over the place. Based on the final shot of this scene (her original drawing with the dress beside it), we can safely assume it’s Umika’s (or the designs and clothes at least, maybe Shiho lets her use this room haha)
Umika is a fashion designer.
And I just absolutely love how subtle this aspect of her is. We’re not told about this -- not even in her bio -- save for Sakuya’s comment of “You’re pretty fashionable, huh?” She does not flaunt this part of herself around nor does she talk about it herself; perhaps it’s a self-confidence thing (though I’m sure her time with Shiho certainly helped her in this regard, otherwise she wouldn’t have this room filled with her wonderful creations ;u;) or perhaps she wants to place her priorities on saving Shiho. It’s not her defining trait, but to have dreams and ambitions like this is pretty big and I think this makes her a very multifaceted character
Anyways, this stuck out to me because even though Sakuya needs to learn how to tone it down by like a lot and give a girl her space, he’s someone who loves and accepts Umika’s style when she’s had a history of people making fun of her for it and I find that pretty sweet ;w; I hope this gets touched upon more and we see more of this side of Umika! Wouldn’t it be really neat if she were the one who designed the Lupins’ thief outfits??? hehe
Thanks for reading! Gosh, it’s because of details like this that Umika’s climbing her way up on my faves list haha. And... just gonna drop this tangent, but is it just me or does Umika exhibit symptoms of PTSD?? Perhaps I should save that for another post lol. Thanks for reading again!

Like Cop, Like Thief [1/6]
Series: Super Sentai (Kaitou Sentai Lupinranger vs Keisatsu Sentai Patranger)
Characters: Asaka Keiichiro-centric; Kogure
Rating: G
Summary: Be they noble thief or vengeful police officer, each of them has their reason to fight.
Words: 850
Notes: Role Swap AU; I’ve always been fascinated with role swaps, and I thought doing one for LupinPat would be really interesting!
ko-fi // You can read this on AO3. Thank you so much for reading and I hope you enjoy~! ヽ(〃・ω・)ノ
Chapter 1: Lupin Red
"So do you accept the offer?"
Keiichiro glared at the man before him, the device he'd called the VS Changer lying in his outstretched hands. Keiichiro's mind screamed at him to get out of there, every muscle in his body ready to run off, the breaths he took almost words to yell at him. Here, this man was asking him to be a thief -- a criminal -- as if it were no big deal.
And yet, Keiichiro couldn't bring himself to say "no."
"...This is the key to defeating the Ganglers?" Keiichiro raised an eyebrow, taking a cautious step forward.
"Correct," Kogure said. "To eradicate the Ganglers and destroy their dimension, you must collect all the pieces of the Lupin Collection. In order to do that, you must become a Lupinranger." Though he spoke calmly, it was as if he was urging him on.
"A thief."
"If that is how you wish to word it, then yes."
Keiichiro huffed, eyes scanning the area. If it was some kind of setup, he should've seen something strange by now. His blind spots were behind and below him, but he doubted anyone could've been hiding out on the bridge. Nonetheless, he couldn't risk anything; one could never be too careful, especially with the Ganglers running around. Hell, he might've been speaking to one right now.
"This is ridiculous," Keiichiro muttered. "Get lost. I'm letting you go for now but if I see you pulling this again, I'll have to look into you for premeditation."
Without waiting for a response, Keiichiro brushed past Kogure as quickly as he could.
"So you're willing to leave the Ganglers out and about?" Kogure called out to him.
Keiichiro stopped in his tracks, whipping around to face him.
"What do you know?!" He gripped the handle of his suitcase as a vein in his forehead nearly popped. "You're just some butler, if you're really who you say you are."
"I know that more and more people continue to go missing," Kogure said rather matter-of-factly, much to Keiichiro's annoyance. He stepped forward, steadily closing the distance between them as he spoke. "I know that the death toll only grows higher and higher." He stopped right in front of Keiichiro, locking gazes with him. "I know that about every attempt the police has made to take down the Ganglers has ended in failure."
Dropping his suitcase with a loud thud, Keiichiro grabbed Kogure by the collar. Even so, Kogure maintained his poker-face, his expression not changing once throughout the whole exchange. Keiichiro gritted his teeth.
"Shut up! Don't act as if things are that simple!" His grip on Kogure's collar tightened, his vision growing redder and redder. "We've been doing all that we can to mitigate and prevent the Gangler attacks! Our unit works all day and all night to preserve the peace!"
"And has that been enough?"
An image of two parents crying over their missing daughter flashed through Keiichiro's mind, of a father losing the light in his eyes as he heard about the death of his wife and child, of a boy wailing for his friends who wouldn't be coming back from their field trip. His police badge rested heavily in his chest pocket.
"We'll find a way!" he shouted, though at this point he wasn't sure if it was to answer Kogure or reassure himself. "We'll find a way to take down the Ganglers, no matter how long it takes!"
"I'm offering you a way right here."
"A just way."
"Is this not just?"
"It's a crime!"
"It's a way to protect the people."
Silence lapsed over, Keiichiro finding neither lie nor truth in Kogure's impassive eyes. He hadn't realized he'd been shaking this whole time, his fingers trembling as he shoved Kogure away. Still, Keiichiro did not walk away -- not just yet.
"Is that not your duty?" Kogure prodded him. "Is it not your job to serve the public in any way you can?"
Once again, they were face-to-face, Kogure holding the VS Changer out to him a little bit higher. Keiichiro glanced down at it, swallowing hard.
"...And how do you know this will work?" His voice was unusually quiet.
"Trust yourself," Kogure said. "For only you are capable of keeping the people safe."
Protecting the peace had been Keiichiro's dream for as long as he could remember. Just as his own role model protected him from harm, he wanted to protect others as well. Truly, he would gladly give up his own life if it meant that everyone could continue smiling without worries.
And surely betraying his own morals was the same as giving up his own life.
His hand hovered over the VS Changer, Kogure watching as he made his decision. There was a gleam in his eyes that Keiichiro couldn't quite discern.
"I'm doing this for the people," he said, gripping the VS Changer. It felt odd and clunky -- wrong -- in his hand. "And only for the people."
"Have no doubt that I understand your resolve, Keiichiro."
Despite that, it seemed as if Keiichiro's police badge was stabbing him in the heart.

Beast Morphers, a breath of fresh air.
My reaction can be summed up by the old Nostalgia Critic line of: Effort, Honest to God effort. Though, to go in more detail:
1. Like the gym and the martial arts class, gives MMPR vibes while being modern enough to still be it’s own thing.
2. Blaze and Devon’s little sparing session might have it’s logical holes to it, but I think it works in the more important bigger picture of establishing their soon to be rivalry as well as Devon’s fighting skills as a whole. Plus, it’s just a damn solid fight scene, ‘instructor going to far/Blaze in the right’ logic be damned.
3. Holy shit, Comic Relief that’s actually funny. I mean, keep away the fart gags and keep up the same energy as the Security Duo had going on in this episode and we’ll be golden. In all seriousness, I do like that Ben and Betty (well, mostly Betty) have their hearts in the right place and try to go out and help when shit goes down. They’ve at least got a better moral head on their shoulders than Victor and Monty ever did, which is probably why I liked em along with the comedic timming actually working this time around. One gag I did like was how Betty stands on a step ladder at the desk, it’s a cute little visual gag that get’s her lack of height across without being overly in your face about it.
4. Ravi’s been called the most stiff of the rangers but unlike, say, Samurai’s Kevin I think it fits the character far better. Like, at least in my book i saw it more as a purposeful restrained kinda vibe. A sort of ‘Just the Facts, Miss’ deal.
5. I’m actually really liking Devon as a character. He’s got skills, sure (but he’s not from a real Samurai family) but he’s kinda used to coasting through life and his desire to see the Grid BattleForce Holodeck thingy gives me shades of how Caarrrranger Red just wanted to drive his boss’s cool car at first. Plus, finally a dad that isn’t MIA/Dead. Freaking FINALLY!
6. Blaze might have been a jerk, sure. But being a jerk isn’t the same as being evil, evil avatar dopples not withstanding.
7. Another thing I like is how we get the name of the city and the basic gist of the show. Samrurai was so bad about this we learned it’s city’s name by way of a driver’s license.
8. The bad guy name drops don’t make 100% perfect sense but after years of ‘What’s a Power Ranger?’ I’ll take call back and continuity nods where I can get em. Plus, honestly, the writers probably just picked it because at least two of those names are from the most recent seasons (Dino Charge and Ninja Steel) than anything else.
9. Multiverse theory is fairly common knowledge, which I just think is rad all around.
10. Like how Jackie was apart of the training and just didn’t make the cut. It’s a simple line but in this new age of ‘Who needs explanations? lol’ writing in TV and movies, it’s nice to get a passing reference to something like that. Plus, Jackie’s actress just sells the optimism and energy of her char.
11. This episode was all original footage and I’m perfectly okay with this. Like, don’t get me wrong, sentai has some damn good fight scenes but I’ve grown increasingly unimpressed with the mecha battles for years by this point.
12. The episode feels small in scale but not claustrophobic or disappointingly small. Like, we get just enough taste of the ranger’s powers and fights to want more vs trying to cram in a henchmen + monster of the week + mecha battle all within 22 some minutes. Gives it a more interpersonal vibe that I dig.
13. Actually really liked the interactions with Roxy and Ravi, both in the locker room and in the flashback. It’s enough to give us that they have a history as well as why they broke up (Ravi seems like a stickler for the rules, at least for this first episode).
14. Gee, Bandi of America, maybe if the sentai didn’t have a great toyline ya should have, oh I don’t know, MADE YOUR OWN FREAKING TOYS TO GO WITH THE LINE YA FREAKING DUMBASSES!
15. Please tell me Chip gives a shit about LupinPat, Kyuranger, and Rusolder. Because the difference of when he actually gives a shit about the sentai in question and when he doesn’t is night and freaking day.
16. Commander Shaw being Ravi’s mom is just freaking beautiful. She’s like one big giant middle finger to Neo Saban’s lack of moms. And gives me Director  Aya Odagiri from Jetman vibes. This is a good thing.
17. This is a small thing but I really like the unmorph sequence. Good use of the environment, solid battle dialogue (no puns, actual insults!), plus, it ultimately shows why the ability to Morph and even up the score is needed in the first place. Sure, just because your good a karate and can fight doesn’t mean the enhanced physical abilities/special powers that most PR/Super Sentai members are implied/shown to have (depending on the season) aren’t a step up and put you on a more even playing field with the forces of evil or whatever.
18. I could point out some of the cliche lines in the episode (”You got to believe me!” and others like it) but I’m way past the point of caring if some well used chestnuts are thrown in here and there. Cliches are the nuts and bolts of communications, after all.
19. Like how Commander Shaw was willing to take Devon’s warning seriously. Evox still messed shit up but that’s not for a lack of competence on Grid Battleforce’s part (maybe their software but hey, even Zone Alarm has it’s limits I guess).
So, yeah. Those are my thoughts on the first episode of Beast Morphers. It’s not perfect, but shit, nothing ever is and focusing on the minutia like “How does the Mayor know about Sledge he wasn’t a treat to the mainline PR universe!” is missing the point, I think. At the end of the day, it’s such a step up in quality from Ninja Steel that I’m left wondering where the effort for that season was? Show might still tank in the end but as far as first impressions went, Hasbro knocked it out of the park on this one.
