🌸🌳🌸 My 91 year old MIL used to tell me she couldn’t believe a garden like mine could exist in Oklahoma. She loved flowers and bits of gardening herself: roses to cut for the vase, basil for pesto in pots on her deck, pansies in spring - always in blue, never purple. She loved amaryllis at Christmas and was one of the few people I knew who had the patience to get repeat bloom from her orchids. Hubs and I brought her a yellow orchid with hints of purple the day she died. She never tired of the simple charm of a cut bloom on her kitchen table. ☘️🌳☘️ Do you love #brickwork as much as I? This zone of brick...part in a herringbone pattern, part a simple run...started out as a brick ‘throw rug’ in front of the wood bench wher I couldn’t get ground cover to grow. I so loved the way it looked, that I expanded the area to the sides. It turned out to be a brilliant, good looking, easy to install solution to a vexing problem. It is simply soft set in a bed sand/dirt and little darlings seed in the crevices. Are used old brick supplemented with more brick from Lowe’s. It took all of a couple of hours, but I think it’s really good looking, don’t you? 🥬🥗🥬 Is it warm enough where you are to direct sow greens and cool season veggies? Last week I direct sowed ( I don’t start many seeds inside...lack of light and room and tolerance for the mess as I have no greenhouse😫) lettuces, arugula, dill, parsley and kale. The dill should have germinated by now, but I see only one lone seedling. I fear the seed was old and I must get a fresh pack. I also planted LOTS of nasturtium and some of the nubby seeds have germinated. Soak overnight to speed up the process. ...and isn’t this wooden true cute. Belonged to my mom:). 🍃🤎🍃 Shall I compare thee to...well, yesterday’s post of this same shot but captured in a far different mood? 😉 That’s what I love about a garden, don’t you? Its emotional transience...depending on season and weather and time of day. I swear, sometimes I think my garden is as moody as I, either reflecting or rejecting my shifting state of mind and temperament. Yes, the garden evokes its own emotions. Sometimes happy and breezy; sometimes gloomy and barren. But always captivating, beckoning and soulful. Such magical transformative power. It can inexplicably morph a terrible day into a good once. That said...it can also dampen or destroy a sunshiny one. Many a time have I been laid low by unexpected outbreaks of rose rosette, unbearable heat or decimating wind. Not to mention my nemesis 🐿! 🌳💜🌳 Are you a restless gardener that moves pots here...and then there...and then back again but two more inches in either direction🤣😂🤣? I plead guilty! But every so often I come up with a composition that sings...layering and balance of multiple elements that I may want to replicate but can’t remember having done in the past. I often revisit random months and years in the garden to refresh my memory and be re-inspired by past efforts. I find it really helpful in planning my garden for the coming year. 🔙🟢🔙 I thought it would be fun to go back in time so you could see what the lawn looked like before I installed #artificialgrass and just AFTER it had been freshly over-seeded with perennial rye and germination had begun. As you can see, the bedlines, edging, and placement of stepping stones looks almost EXACTLY as it does now with the synthetic turf. (Go back in my feed and look at recent images of the back yard for a comparison.) What is NOT the same is the amount of labor, water, time, fertilizing, weeding, disease control, constant wear and tear, degree of frustration, and overall angst I experience each year. Cuz in my mind, it doesn’t matter how good the garden beds look, if the canvas that accompanies it looks like…well, you know😉...(the effect is simply not the same). Very shortly, I will be shooting an extensive interview with the company that installed my grass. We will be discussing absolutely every consideration and cost that goes into making this conversion. 🌸🌳🌸 Shall I share three #cheapchic touches that I think can send a garden vignette over the top? (I am a notorious cheapskate who still demands high style, do you know what I mean?) • Hang a good-looking basket that serves a functional purpose. It need not be $$$. On the contrary. It will be exposed to the elements, and will deteriorate over time. Consequently look at thrift stores, @goodwill baskets on sale at @michaelsstores or @hobbylobby or @target for a good deal. You get the idea. Then actually USE it. High style as both #gardenornament AND functional catch all. • Hang a lantern appropriate to the style of your garden from an arbor, gate, or next to an entry point. Then USE it. I am trying to get much better at this myself. It’s one of the things I find so compelling about Scandinavian and German gardens like @victoriaskoglund @gncgarden @79392 @yomargey ...they put their garden accessories to use on a regular basis. True daily-living charm, not just affectation and pretty appointments. Easy but life enhancing graciousness. The one in this picture was a cast off from a client of mine. Cost $0. Value - great. • Take an inexpensive plant with potential and turn it into something glorious. The white blooms of the Chinese Snowball Viburnum pictured here started out as an $11 shrub. Over time I pruned It into a small tree that makes a stunning spring focal point. Did I know I was even going to do that when I planted it? No. Did I know it would even live😂? No. But it costs nothing to be observant, take a small gardening risk, and see something in a new way. (A skill I have been hideously poor at, but one I am trying to hone.) As I learn daily, style need not be pricey nor high maintenance nor high end. 🌸💚🌸 May I send this flowery valentine your way for a round of hide and pink? How many pops of pink do you see in this capture of my garden from last spring? The rhythm and repetition of a garden design element across a space...in this case...PINK 🤗... makes a garden harmonious, cohesive, and sets a definite tone. In this garden...feminine, fresh and frilly. Think how different the mood will be later in the season… perhaos fall…when everything will be in gold, umbers and rust colors? Mother Nature of course is the ultimate seasonal ‘color’ designer, but we can influence her work with our own color selections, textural choices, and volume of said colors. I tend to prefer gradations of just a few hues. But vibrant, high contrast color choices can be energizing and dramatic. 🍃🌳🍃 Have you heard the expression that boxwood is the little black dress of the garden? Reliable, always flattering, and makes any ‘jewelry’ or accessory you pair it with that much more beautiful. Any strong form evergreen with well-defined contours can do the same thing actually. And one needn’t grow expansive, well-clipped hedges or large numbers of them to exploit their good looks and merits. Even one or two can be the perfect foil for blousy flowers and bosomy blooms. The dainty blooms of this Climbing Old Blush rose sing in accompaniment with the bright green Wintergreen boxwood. Quite a lovely orchestration, don’t you think? 🍃💜🍃 Do you love this image from Ina’s garden @barefootcontessa__ as much as I? An entirely different #potager vibe than my own. I still have garden trellis inspiration on the brain, so I am digressing a bit from my standard content of just my own garden images. After all, winter is all about garden dreaming is it not…and I have garden goals along with the best of you. 🤩 So, analyzing this trellis vignette, it’s interesting to notice that the trellis on the left is bare...and the existence of a second trellis flanking the other side is? Well, we just don’t know, do we? Is the trellis just implied? is it completely covered? is the design intentionally asymmetrical with just one trellis on the left and visual weight on the right? These questions make this trellis design compelling and mysterious…thus quintessentially appealing...to the eye. Along with all of the other eye candy in this picture of coarse!
