🌳✨🌳 For #followfriday I highly recommend tagging along with the inimitable @jillsharpstudio. In addition to sharing my obsession with myrtle topiary, she also shares my obsession with topiary styling and creative ‘mulching’ or topdressing these lovelies. In this image (a repost) she layers the topsoil with black beans (something I first saw done @innatperrycabin and have replicated myself around the holidays with tiny lady apples) and key limes, and on her feed discusses other scented, whimsical options. At some point, of course, Those beans will get a little soggy and may even sprout with all of the watering our little darlings require…but removing them gives us topiary enthusiasts another opportunity to use something else as a novel mulch. Yesterday on a walk, my pockets were stuffed with lime green, fresh acorns, lime green walnuts still in their husks, and cute little seed pods and immature apples. Such happy foraging! 🎈🌳🎈In what creative ways have you used #palletwood? These clever gals used them as low lounging tables for @erika_fitness_okc bridal shower this weekend. Lots of cozy seating: throw rugs and #poufs and pillows. My favorite touch was the trio of #heliumballoons secured to the slats. The entire ensemble was clever, fun and youthful. 😱🌳😱 SWIPE LEFT and you will feel either better or worse about gardening as a hobby🤣. So, a harsh lesson in today’s #lvgardendesignschool but an ever so important one. ⚫️ Know thy geography, growing conditions and limitations of your own garden...and then make your garden ‘speak’ the language of that place. As much as I love an English garden look, I also know that my own English garden has to speak with an Oklahoma accent. In other words, with flowers and shrubs that are tough as nails and can handle our sometimes brutal weather. The Wintergreen boxwood in the potager looks beautiful now, but was nearly decimated by heat and drought years ago in a horrifically extreme summer. Fortunately, Wintergreen is a tough variety that recovered relatively quickly after a season or two of cooler temps and blessed rain. But was I too devastated at the time? You bet. ⚫️ Lesson 2: the gardener has to be as tough and resilient as the garden itself. 🌳👩‍🏫🌳 #lvgardendesignschool is back in session. (Make sure to save and share for future reference 😉). Lesson today: how to make a garden or landscape look intentional and harmonious rather than mish-mash and thrown together. Here are some tips: 1️⃣ Repeat a design element across a space. This leads and draws the eye, unifies different spaces and makes multiple garden spaces “speak the same language”. 2️⃣ These design elements could include a form, color, type of plant or a garden ornament that is repeated rhythmically throughout the space. 3️⃣ In the image above, note the repeated use of the spherical form in boxwood, Eugenia topiary and a few clipped yew. Having the form and green color used over and over at varying levels creates cohesion and uniformity throughout the large bed. Carrying the brick and stone on the home’s facade into the garden bed as edging does the same thing. Posts with short, easily digestible design tips using my own garden (and my own foibles) that you can then save here on IG for future reference. I’ll try to point out the ‘lessons’ from each image that I learned in the process of starting a garden from scratch with no expertise whatsoever. I hope you will SAVE them, SHARE them, and give me feedback! I hope this will inspire those of you who don’t know where to begin, and who get discouraged that it doesn’t all happen overnight. School is in session! Swipe to see the lessons for today! 1️⃣ Enclose a space and establish symmetry by MIRRORING similar garden elements. Here, I built two arbors on a similar scale (though not necessarily size) to face one another, and enclose the potager in between. Both arbors are on exactly the same axis so have a parallel point of view from each direction. This concept could also be executed using facing garden benches, flower beds or living walls. 2️⃣A FOCAL POINT grabs the eye, enhances the symmetry, and tells the eye where to rest in the space. Over the years, my focal point has varied: a scarecrow, a bamboo teepee with miniature pumpkins, a weeping pussy willow, giant alliums, and now an olive urn. A great opportunity for creativity and seasonal change. 3️⃣ The posts on both ends do an excellent job of FRAMING THE VIEW and lending importance and grand entry to a separate garden room. 🌻🌳🌻 Ah. Memories. What are you feeling nostalgic about in your garden? When I took this picture maybe two or three years ago, the composition, scale and condition of these garden elements was just right. But lest I get too sentimental about the now missing arbor, pussy willow and huge stand of rudbeckia, I remember one overarching life truth: the only thing constant is change. The willow and black-eyed susans had become aggressive and overgrown thugs. The arbor was tired and in disrepair. Gardens, after all, are dynamic changing organisms that evolve, adapt, suffer, and recover. And I do love the transformation wrought by making needed changes. 🥵🌳🥵 Color is hard to come by in an Oklahoma garden in August. Even heat-loving annuals like lantana, zinnias, angelonia and penta begin to look weather worn, tired and droopy. Not to mention buggy, powdery mildew-y and water hogs. It’s one of the reasons I rely so heavily on evergreens like boxwood, hollies and yews. Their structure looks pretty good year round, even in August. It keeps my garden looking tidy and well-kept…at least I like to think so... especially when temperatures skyrocket and everything is suffering heat stroke. When conditions moderate I happily plop in seasonal color here and there in the way of bulbs etc., but the underlying structure and foundation of my garden...its bones...is all about the evergreens and topiary.
