my top 10 songs for october
//this month was the fastest in all of the year.
1. snowflake by Powfu, Jaden & Sarcastic Sounds
now this song IS something special. I could rant about it all day long and it still wouldn't be all of it. this is the story of a beautiful love, heartbreak, loss and mourning it all. it is the perfect combination of sadness and happy memories for me.
+ there was one guy who called me 'snowflake' who had a special place in my life. it reminded me much happier times in my life and really made me value the things I have.
2. Obsessed by Dreamey
I mastered travelling to my workplace this month and this song was a huge part of it. in the beginning of the month I felt so much and so little at the same time that I was listening to 1 song on the 40 minutes I spent travelling on repeat. this was the lucky one that I never got bored of - with number one.
3. Save That Shit by Lil Peep
I know I've been listening to this exact song for a while now. I love it to bits, but somehow he didn't make it into my top10's before. this is a masterpiece, I even wrote a novel based around this song/the experience of listening to it.
mas-ter-piece.
and I was on a little trip with some of my friends in the beginning of the month. we were coming home from some parties (several ones in one night) and I was handed the phone to check on the music every once in a while. I saw all the recommended music and chose to play this song because it's a fucking mood and we had so much fun with the boy who drove.
4. Go Solo by Tom Rosenthal
this song made it to my "songs that make me feel like home" playlist and I think that in itself is enough as an explanation.
it's lovely!
5. RIP Roach by XXXTENTACION & Ski Mask The Slump God
there are things that we don't have to speak about.
actually "momma raised a solider not a bitch" is my kind of self-care and the way I hype myself up for shit. let's just say I needed a lot of that this last month.
6. Beethoven by Kenndog
oh, it's a perfect example of things we don't need to talk about.
this one makes my brain real happy and when things get this rough, I need every second of joy that I can give to myself.
7. Bored by Billie Eilish
found this at the middle of the month, I could realte a lot so I listened, but it didn't help my depression. actually it triggered me a lot but I didn't even notice until it was too late.
8. Better wash my mouth out with the soap - slowed by Sobertune
this remix is something out of this world. I actually love the blackbear song it's mixed with so it's a win-win. sadly the lyrics are resonating with me on a different level.
"god, I wish I never spoke, now I gotta wash my mouth out with soap"
9. Sick and Tired by iann dior, Machine Gun Kelly & Travis Barker
this is the golden trio! the artists are such a great pair.
the song is such a cool one. it has the best vibes for being stuck somewhere, loosing your mind and trying to figure shit out.
10. Life Goes On by Oliver Tree
suuuch a bop!
I somehow get turned off when I listen to this one. my brain stops working, overthinking and feeling and it is a real special experience. I love it to bits.

Tom Rosenthal - Live Review
Tom Rosenthal – St Pancras Church (London) live review.
On Wednesday Thursday and Friday in March 2019, Tom Rosenthal finally emerged from the internet and YouTube (where he’d built up a huge following all on his own without a manager or record label) to play proper gigs for the first time in his 8 year career. The fans weren’t sure they’d ever see Tom perform but the days had arrived as the first 450 tickets (150 a night) of a small European tour were snapped up in seconds.
Although the majority of the 100 songs Tom has released are fairly down-tempo often with sad music, he chose a setlist that had a perfect balance of beautiful songs that had the audiences sighing and crying with emotion, combined with uptempo, rousing songs with light spirit and wonderful humour.
Tom, on piano, was accompanied by John on acoustic guitar and backing vocals together with Maddie on cello and backing vocals. The blending of the instruments, voices and harmonies was perfect and mesmerizing. In a beautiful church in London all these elements combined created a magical 2 hour scene.
Opening with Don’t You Know How Busy And Important I Am, Tom set the stage for unique reinterpretations of his own songs, for this song and others, combining the quiet calming sounds of The Sleepy Album/Z-Sides with epic, loud climaxes.
The highlights for me were his prettiest songs: Go Solo, It’s OK, All Of Them Dreams, To You Alone, Middle Of My Mind and Soon Goodbye Now Love,  where he sent the people in the room into a silent hypnotized trance where they recalled their lives and relationships over the past 8 years. The emotion packed into his songwriting is enchanting and fitted excellently with his unique, hushed, smooth vocals for these songs, which sounded great in a live setting.
For the “singalong sections” Tom gave specific requests for how the 150 people in the room should sing along to 7 or so of the songs. Of these, the surprise moment to remember of the night was an old B-side, Red. The only lyrics are “do do do do do do do do do RED RED RED RED RED RED do do do do” where Tom asked everyone to sing/shout along to the RED bit. It was totally silly and totally uplifting and really loud.
Tom’s main reason for not playing live for so long is due to him looking after his children, and the lyrics in the songs dedicated to them, Fenn and You Only Need You encapsulated what parenthood should be about in such a heartfelt way.
The worst and only bad thing about the night was that there was a Beyoncé cover in the set, but he even managed to make that funny and inventive.
Tom’s talking between songs was wonderfully charming with lots of moments of uniquely surreal humour. He introduced P.A.S.T.A as the only song of his that he really means and believes in. He described performing 2 songs as like going to the dentist. He timed his songs with the gaps between them synchronized with the church bells that struck on the hour that he loved talking about. He analyzed the quality of Jon’s throwing of socks into the audience (during Every Sock Gets A Hole). When he made the odd mistake in a song, the solution he offered would be to become more like a robot and not to get lost in the emotion.
Tom was so grateful and baffled to be performing to people who actually wanted to hear him sing. Despite 100s of millions of views and listens to his songs online, his modesty makes you wonder if he’s even noticed he’s got an adoring fan base.
As Tom left the stage, he struck some silly poses and then spent ages talking to his fans.
I believe Tom is the best songwriter of our generation and seeing and hearing these songs live in a beautiful church confirmed that for me. Let’s hope he continues playing his songs live around the world, whilst still remaining the 21stcentury’s best kept secret.

Rules: answer these questions and tag whomever you want :)
Tagged by @loveisalwayswise @captainwilldameron @clarkgriffon @amesandjake (sorry it took me so long to get to it, but I’ve been moving to uni and NOW I HAVE SOME TIME TO DO IT, YAY!)
Name: Talis
Star sign: Aries
Height: 5′4″
Middle name: Sarah
Put your playlist on shuffle and name the first four songs that have come up:
I have 63 playlists (and counting) but the one I’m listening to today is called “There Will Be Better Days” both because it’s a lyric in one of the songs in it, and because I made the playlist when I was having a rough time. It’s great.
Fireworks - First Aid Kit (my emotions!!!)
Go Solo - Tom Rosenthal (tom rosenthal gives me Bellarke feels with every song and this one is no exception)
Tomorrow - Miner (this is where the title of the playlist comes from!!!)
La La Land - Jax (this song is fucking awesome, go listen to it)
Grab the book nearest to you and turn to page 23. What’s line 17?
"Ford,” said Arthur, “would you please tell me what the hell is going on?”
It’s from Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, which is one of my favourite books of all time. I’ve been rereading them this week.
Had a poem or song written about you: BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA NO, WHY WOULD ANYONE DO THAT?? I am not exactly muse-worthy
Last time you played air guitar: I play a whole air orchestra - there’s violins and guitars and pianos and trombones and all sorts - and I play it at least once a day, every time there’s a banger on my playlist (which, considering I take pride in my playlists, is often)
Who is your celebrity crush: oh god, so many. Right now? Karen Gillan, Amy Adams, Alyson Hannigan (what can I say, I love redheads) Chris Evans, Bob Morley, Eliza Taylor, David Tennant, Melissa Benoist, Chris Pratt, Nick Robinson, Noah Centineo, Lana Condor, Winona Ryder, Stephanie Beatriz, Peter Gadiot... I should probably stop now, right?
Right.
Sound you hate/sound you love:
When I’m really anxious, any tiny little sound can wind me up, but especially metal against things - cutlery on plates, chairs scraping on the floor stuff like that.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE the sound of rain, and I have a rain app on my phone. Also music, at all times, everywhere.
Do you believe in ghosts? I believe that our energy goes somewhere when we die, but I don’t think I’d go so far as to say ghosts... I’m a cynical shaniac when it comes down to it, but my imagination runs wild.
How about aliens? Anyone who doesn’t believe in aliens is just not thinking about it hard enough. I don’t believe they’re green with big black eyes, but it’s a statistical impossibility for there to be no other life out there. The universe is infinite and ever expanding and there has to be life out there; it would be small-minded of us to claim otherwise.
What was the last book you read? The Restaurant at the End of the Universe (the second book in the HGTTG trilogy of six - what can I say, Douglas Adams is an icon)
Do you like the smell of gasoline? I really do.
What was the last movie you saw? Sierra Burgess is a Loser. Do NOT watch this movie. It is bad. Not even Noah Centineo could save it, and he has charm enough to spare. It’s bad, it’s creepy, it’s sexual assaulty, just, like... don’t.
Do you have any obsessions right now? The 100, OBVIOUSLY, but also I’m rewatching Firefly for the thousandth time (for “research” or so I told myself) and I’m also rewatching the 12 Monkeys TV show (I stopped pretending that was for research last week) which, if you haven’t seen it, is amazing, and VERY Bellarke, hence my Bellarke fic based on the story.
Do you tend to hold grudges? It takes a LOT to piss me off. I am the most forgiving person I have ever met, and that is not an exaggeration. I will forgive and forgive and forgive until I can’t anymore, and once I’ve reached that point? I’m DONE. If you push me until I break, I will hold that grudge until I die - I gave you your chances, hundreds of them.
In a relationship? Nah, but I’m tumblr married, which is way better.

2020 first aid kit playlist thing
My year began pretty well, but the problems didn't end just because we reset our calendars and all that. And with missing my life, feeling like a failure, most of my friends with arts/culture careers feeling similar, the pain/system/news, the chain of painful events that happened in February… I was walking around ready to cry the universal flood at any moment. A friend sent a video of a filmmaker (?) sharing his 2020 experience through films to a group chat so we could all feel less alone in our thoughts and feelings or something, and I finally cracked.
After all the feels I did what I do most of the time and went through my music to pick myself up. It helped. So I thought I'd drop some songs here to keep as a time capsule; and most of all, in case it helps anyone the way I saw that guy's movie list help me and my friends.
I first thought of 26 and Anxiety Attack, but I feel like they might be too much, so instead, I'll start with the gem that is:
It translates to “I am my own Monday” and after the awkward inside joke intro, it begins: “I hate feeling like I can't breathe, you know, my lungs should, but they won't expand / You have problems, I have almost the same problems…” and “it's a pity that if we work hand in hand it's due to the shackles that hold us” and “selling my time for money that doesn't fulfil me / doing things I wouldn't do if I didn't really have to”.
I should honestly just translate the whole thing, but here's the end:
Have you ever felt like your guiding light blinds you? / a single match can't illuminate the whole sky / I don't want to lose the shine that I brought / reading some other character's lines* / sometimes sadness takes hold of my mind / I brought the perfect records to face it
* or script?
And here's a fun story: no film festival is completely clean of intellectual/artistic elitism/ego. It happens to the best of people as much as I dislike it. A couple of years ago we made a press conference to announce everything music related in that year's edition: our film selection, concerts, special events, and the bands that were going to collaborate with the teams of that year's Collegiate Rally (my baby <3).
Lng/SHT was in the lineup and he was that day in the panel. When a reporter asked his thoughts on our festival he said “Yeah, I love it. They have something for everyone: from intense art films to more Michaelbayish stuff for guys like me who enjoyed Transformers.”
Repressing my reaction to our director repressing her reaction was so hard I almost busted a lung. Good times.
I think this one speaks for itself. The whole lyrics are in Bandcamp and I like their Tiny Desk.
This choice might not be for everyone, but almost always death makes us think about our own death, and this is one of the first times I thought about mine in a peaceful way. Here's some death positive media from before Ask a Mortician was cool.
I love the imagery in this one. And I love how I feel listening to it or singing it (my voice makes onions cry though).
I found this on thesixtyone back in 2011 when the apocalypse was a fun niche theme/genre/aesthetic. I remember reading this guy's bunker updates and the lyrics of his songs, and thinking “lol what a creative guy”.
It's been like 6 years since the last time I listened to this album, so when it popped up on shuffle last year during the quarantine… I began singing it because I knew the lyrics and then because of the lyrics.
Does it bug me that if I had been monologuing first, I would have had a decent Howard Ashman transition? Yes.
But for a moment, my life was a musical, I had a solo, and I'm not ashamed to say it.
I like this album a lot. I like the home movie element in this song, but other than that I don't think I have anything else to say D:
youtube
Be More Kind was the obvious option, but this song starts “let's inherit the earth, 'cause no one else is taking it” and YES.
Also, I thought this needed a little energy.
I believe you can sing this song and omit the “not” in “I'm not sad” if you feel like it. I found the lyrics very relatable and I think I needed someone to remind me that “who I'll be needs who I am”.
youtube
When most people think of Beethoven they think of Napoleon, his 5th Symphony, the age of revolution, the heroic spirit, and such. Listen to the opening and see where your mind goes.
I think we should also remember that his friends called him Louie or Luigi, and when he began losing his hearing he got very depressed and contemplated suicide. Intestinal ailments are one of the least glamourous things that come with stress and depression. And still, the opening of this movement is inspired by burps, farts, and that kind of noises. I don't know if this was his idea of humour at the time, but the fact that he wrote something so allegro molto when he was at his lowest, is beautiful to me.
youtube
Re: Stacks I think is the perfect ending to For Emma Forever Ago. I love this song. It's a warmer tonal shift in the album, it's about an ending marking a new beginning, there is something there about stacks that (I think) represent the effort and time JV put in, just for everything to fall apart…
I like that “this is not the sound of a new man or crispy realization”, and you don't need to forget about your pain to start a new chapter. Finally, if you listen closely you'll hear Justin put away his guitar, get up and walk away. I like that that's there.
There was a band called Kithkin and it is awesome. They made an LP called "Rituals, Trances & Ecstasies for Humans in Face of The Collapse" seven years ago. It is also a favorite. Sorcerer is the last song. I love it on its own, and I think it's a good end to this playlist. Here is the whole lyrics, and here's the part I'll quote:
I know / Every answer begs a question / Every end is just a new beginning / I hope / I'm right
I know / If the worst is yet to come / Then the best is gonna follow / I hope / We survive
youtube
Sorcerer is Sorcerer, but I decided to add this version of Hope for the optimism. Tom Rosenthal is one of my favorite artists and I love all of his songs equally: the funny ones, the sleepy ones, the soppy ones, the emotional ones… all of them.
And the videos are a gem, sometimes I do Tom Rosenthal video marathons because that's how much I enjoy them.
The song is self-explanatory, and I like the video because it reminds me of community and connection, creativity, and that there are lovely people out there who are worth everything.
(That conclusion was too cheesy, but I guess I'll have to live with that and leave Carlos & Miguel a death threat.)

April 2019 reviews roundup
Tumblr media
Ricky Gervais at Guildford's G Live was followed the week by a trip to Edinburgh. Whilst there, after John Hunt’s ‘After Work Blues’ at The Jazz Barr, we headed to the Usher Hall for DMA's where the floor was a riot of 14 - 18 year olds making the most of their youth and the school break; lifting the music just from their mass attendance.
Tumblr media
The day after, we past Isabel Caswell coming out of M&S in Sheffield, realising ‘Calendar Girls’ was in town, whilst heading over to the other end of town for an intimate performance from Chloë Foy and her band at Cafe No.9. Stood around one microphone, the perfect acoustic sound detailed her delicate songs in the highest, audible quality. It was clear there were a few returning regulars filling up the venue but we managed to find the perfect position to hear the mix as, due to the nature of the set-up, sitting on the left hand side may have been too piano heavy.
Mixing folk with classical, the dynamic performance showcased some great melodic writing, whilst using her voice as a true instrument, rapidly putting herself in line with Phoebe Bridgers and Lisa Hannigan.
Tumblr media
We were back in London on Monday for the first of Glen Hansard’s 2 nights at The Barbican. Like when I'd seen him with The Frames at the Scala, neither evening was sold out. Since the success of the film and musical 'Once', from around that time, featuring the Oscar winning 'Falling Slowly' and the equally popular 'When Your Mind's Made Up', his two LPs solo, which came either side of 'Didn't He Ramble', expectedly followed on from that style of writing and production The Swell Season (his duo with film co-star and former flame, Markéta Irglová) possessed. Now touring his fantastic fourth full length under his own name 'The Wild Willing', this record seems to be as important to him as 'Didn't He Ramble' in comparison to his other two solo efforts 'Rhythm & Repose' and 'A Season On The Line', which were not featured at all in the first night's setlist. In fact, this new album happened from moments of inspiration and improvisation that took place in between takes from pre-penned songs - eventually casting aside the original plan altogether as the musicians involved propelled Glen's threads of ideas into songs; disrupting the flow if songs were heading in a certain area.
Tumblr media
Having been sent the new record’s audio in advance, before I was able to buy the vinyl, it arrived with a strong feeling of weather - like a storm was coming in; as featured at the end of the first night's opener 'Wait Of The World', which eventually became subsumed in wind; emerging like a fog. Balanced on a stall, just for this opener, Glen asked for a set list or possibly a lyric sheet during this new composition?
Tumblr media
For the last few years, Glen Hansard had been travelling as a 13-piece, soul revue, big band. Tonight the horn section had been disbanded but had the addition of acoustic guitarist, Javier Mass, (making them 11 on stage) joining them from the second song 'I'll Be You Be Me' - a studio improvisation in France; connecting with the idea of intimacy, surrendering to someone until you become each other. You can hear a split second of Bowie's vocal rasp on the loop (from a cassette demo of the Queen and Bowie session for ‘Under Pressure’) that David Cleary added to the track as the beat.
Tumblr media
The end mantra of the third song played 'Don't Settle' built on the advice Liam Clancy gave to Bob Dylan, before the theatre went pitch black for a pre-recorded vocal performance from Aida Shahghasemi at the end of following new number 'Fool's Game' - a song they opened with the next night.
After 4 songs from 'The Wild Willing', a sigh of relief met the plucked intro chords to 'Didn't He Ramble''s 'My Little Ruin, which soon lead onto 'Once' film soundtrack favourite 'When Your Mind's Made Up', which Glen halted momentarily on night 1 just as the drums and bass came in. The 5/4 time signature seemed fine to me – especially with one of the best drummers in the business. On night 2, the Irish singer teased the title lyric about the UK having not made up their mind about Brexit before he showed how his solo/acoustic Swell Season song 'Leave' took on a whole new meaning. Joking aside, the band leant into the shift in dynamic even more so; covering the particular tones of the album’s Iranian musicians, who were absent, along with Aida, after being refused visas into the UK.
Tumblr media
After 'Winning Streak' from 'DHR', another 4 songs (including 'Mary', 'Brother's Keeper' and 'The Closing Door') from 'The Wild Willing' were aired, mixing in The Specials' 'Ghost Town' (night 1 only) with 'Race To The Bottom' - a title which is already a play on AC/DC's 'It's A Long Way To The Top...', whilst the lyrics are diary entries of rhyming couplets from day to day occurrences from his writing sessions in Paris. Night 2 saw the only outing for a ‘Between Two Shores’ track with ‘Roll On Slow’ which lead on to a cover from Van Morrison’s former band, Them, in the shape of ‘Gloria’, with help from an audience member on lead vocals.
'Didn't He Ramble' (recorded for the 'Season On The Line' ep and not for the LP of the same name) saw Glen pass his electric guitar down to Javier to improvise a solo, which was better on night 1 but night 2 lead to an extra chorus at the end.
Tumblr media
With Glen coming to the front of the stage to sing 'Grace Beneath The Pines', he strummed a few of the chords on guitar for it on night 2 before putting it down. Despite having his string section with him, Glen decided to sing the fiddle part at the end of his 'DHR' solo, piano song 'McCormack's Wall', clapping along with the audience. This song was traded for a completely unplugged (like ‘Grace Beneath…’) version of 'Falling Slowly' on the second night, with the strings and keys watching closely for the changes. Maybe he was about to perform it on night one too before Javier Mas returned to the stage a song too early. Glen asked him to stay to duet one from his former boss: Leonard Cohen's 'Famous Blue Raincoat'. Night 2 saw the band go into Cohen's 'Bird On The Wire' after DHR's 'Her Mercy', Night 1, instead saw a snippet of 'Wedding Ring', from the same album, thrown in at the end, which wouldn't have been right now that Curtis Sonny Fowlkes is no longer in the band to come to the centre stage to sing a verse. After an old Frames rock number ('Revelate' on night 1, switched for 'Fitzcarralado' on night 2) the whole band did get an opportunity to take turns to sing a part of Pete Seeger's 'Passing Through' as the last song on the opening night, and Brendan Benhan's 'The Auld Triangle' at the end of the second.
Tumblr media
As intended, he's certainly uncomfortable again and both nights proved how beauty exists outside of comfort. Don't settle.
On night 2 we had gone to Rough Trade East beforehand for 'Idlewild: in conversation'. With no live performance, I went down to Southampton Engine Rooms to see them the following Tuesday.

The next day, we caught a bit of Lauren Aquilina's [mostly] solo performance at the House of St Barnabas private bar in Soho, where we’d previously been taken to by Starsailor, before catching the second half of Newton Faulkner’s set at the London Palladium – a place he deserves to be after the career he’s had so far.
After Ed Byrne at Kingston’s Outside The Box, we headed over the road for a sleepy Peter Doherty & The Puta Madres New Slang gig. We were back at Outside The Box for Tom Rosenthal & Ian Stirling as the month came to a close.
