more batim book characters! this time some of my favorite side characters, some important ones, and some that literally could not have a smaller role with still being in the book.

okay I said i’d talk about my praetor ocs so here they are. my guys. If you follow Deadangelos you’ve probably seen a lot of them already but get ready for the in-depth version because they’re probably my favorite OCs i’ve made purely for the askblog and they’re very fun to me.

Behold: Dee Keystone (child of Janus) and Cadeyrn “Cade” Avitus (legacy [grandson] of Summanus), the praetors before Jason and Reyna!

(Explanations under the cut cause this got long)

They were made with two main shticks in mind: A.) Reverse-engineering Jason and Reyna to figure out what their predecessors might have been like based on their own personalities, with the idea that they might have tried to model themselves based off of mentor figures, and B.) A personal headcanon of mine that the Romans tended to favor promoting demigods who could potentially fit the Great Prophecy description but with a much wider concept of what “a half-blood of the eldest gods” could potentially mean. At least until the Titan War ended. When the war ended they just presumed Jason was the prophecy kid and they were a year off about his age and all was good.

I brainstormed a bunch of praetor designs for this and ended up picking these two (and one of the other scrapped designs became Athanasius “Mac” Macbeth, one of the centurions of the 5th cohort before Jason and Reyna) cause I felt they worked best and also i just liked their designs. They’re a bit older than I imagine most praetors would be just cause I personally figured it’d make the most sense for the Romans during the Titan War to be drawing in reserve forces from retired legionaries, and so those in the legion who would normally retire just kind of stayed until the war ended. Ergo, these two being possibly the oldest praetors Camp Jupiter has ever had. (Their ages/years in the legion is specifically them in TLO, since that’s the time they’re mostly showing up on the blog.)

Cade is very specifically meant to mirror Jason and Thalia a ton (ergo Comparison Thalia) - Summanus is the Roman god of nocturnal storms and sometimes considered just a sort of variation of Jupiter. My thought with him is that his family lives in New Rome and they fostered Jason when he arrived (because who better to raise a baby who can short-circuit camp’s entire power grid with a sneeze than a legacy family who all also have lightning powers and have raised electrocuting toddlers before?). Plus, Cade just so happens to be extremely similar to Thalia, so baby Jason latched onto him pretty immediately and Cade ended up his big-brother figure. Also yes, I did make extended families for basically all the roman ocs I’m making for this event; Cade has an aunt and two cousins. Cade’s appearance is also purposefully reverse-engineered from Thalia and Jason - his hair is supposed to look a lot like Jason’s except Jason always has a cowlick sticking up (and later gets an undercut, which is why Dee has a half-shaved head cause xe’s reverse-engineered too) with the idea that it’s symbolic of Jason trying to live up to Cade’s legacy but he can never quite be the same, because It’s My Askblog And I Can Flesh Out The Underdeveloped Characters’ Backstories If I Want To. (Jason getting an undercut later and how that relates to Dee is Dee as a child of Janus represents decision and paths and I will get into more detail later on the blog about how Dee specifically represents to Jason what decisions he makes about what path he wants in life and him getting an undercut during HoO/between series is kind of a symbol of him moving away from the original path laid out for him at Camp Jupiter and forging his own path instead. This OC breakdown is actually just Jason character analysis/headcanons in disguise.) Cade also has some face scars to mirror Jason’s scar on his lip. His SPQR symbol is just a lightning bolt over a moon for “nocturnal storms.” Cade also happens to be the same age Thalia would be if she hadn’t been turned into a tree and then became immortal. This also means him and Dee are the same age as Luke. That’s probably symbolism, idk.   ¯\_(ツ)_/¯  

If Cade is primarily Jason’s mentor figure, Dee is primarily Reyna’s. This is extra fun cause Cade is kind of the more serious between the two of them whereas Dee leans a bit more towards Jason’s brand of not-quite-golden-retriever energy, so they kind of swapped there. The “9yr” thing is how long both of them have been in the legion specifically - for Dee, that also includes moving into Camp Jupiter in general, but for Cade it’s just the legion cause he was born there. Yes, this is more parallels to Reyna and Jason (Jason being raised in CJ versus Reyna joining later). Also again, Dee’s hair is meant to somewhat parallel Jason’s undercut he gets later. I really put way too much detail into these guys. It’s fun though.

Some more fun little things!:

Dee has a girlfriend who’s a rogue. and also a daughter of Arke. aka a Greek demigod. That part is extremely complicated so I won’t get into it right now but the short version is: Comedy of Errors (Arke is the twin of Iris, whose Roman name is... Arcus. They’re both goddesses of rainbows. Everyone is confused.) They met during the war and it’s very cute (except for The Horrors but we can ignore that for right now).

The 5th cohort centurion guy i mentioned earlier, Mac, is a legacy of Dis Pater and also dating Cade.

As a legacy of Dis Pater, I like to imagine Mac is the one who gave Jason the coin weapon he originally had.

There’s a whole background New Rome political drama that bleeds into the plotline involving the praetors, Mac, and Mac’s cousin (a guy named Brennus Brinley, a legacy of Bacchus and former augur/Octavian’s mentor). It’s all very complicated and way too detailed for something that will basically never get addressed on the blog but it’s very fun to me.

Currently on the blog I’m doing a flashback event of Jason’s backstory/time at Camp Jupiter and we’re in the portion explaining the Roman side of the Titan War and Dee just basically got told to fake their death cause they found out Brennus is working for the Titan Army so. That’s a whole thing. Why is Brennus working for the Titan Army (something that will definitely never get the chance to be explained on the blog)? See aforementioned political drama. Yeah his family is just trying to get power. So he threatened the life of a praetor during battle which is a horrible idea really but whatever. It’s fiiiine. anyways Cade is sad about that now and I should be working on the next set of panels to explain the rest of what happens with that whole mess.

The interesting part though is I very lightly got to touch upon what Dee’s powers are as a child of Janus and it’s basically just xe can see potential outcomes of a scenario or different paths that are most likely to arise as the result of a decision:

Like here’s xem having xyr life threatened and deciding what to do about it. And xe saw one option had like, waaaay more death, so they picked the other one.

(Also if you’re wondering “Wait, is Dee wearing a CHB necklace?” again, see: Xe’s dating a greek demigod in the Titan Army. It’s complicated. Short version though, said greek demigod was formerly a camper and gave her beads to Dee. Dee still doesn’t know about CHB though. Xe just thinks xyr girlfriend is from New York.)

Cade’s powers I don’t get to go into as much detail about in the plotline I have but generally - he just has lightning powers. They’re a bit more muted than Jason’s though they get stronger at night, obviously. But also because he’s a legacy he’s not as electric-proof so he can’t really do a ton without getting injured himself. He’s more electric-proof than most people though, which is why he’s able to mentor Jason without getting absolutely fried. Also his mom is a cloud nymph which doesn’t really have any impact on him powers-wise and also isn’t super relevant but I think it’s fun and also if he ever grew out his hair/beard it’d totally get wispy like clouds or fog. Again that’ll never come up on the blog but it’s fun to me.

Okay so you guys know the percabeth scene in tlo where annabeth takes the poisoned dagger for Percy and is like ‘you would have done the same for me’ even though at that moment their only best friends and she thinks he like someone else? Well I was just thinking this could be macriley. Cause Riley would take a knife for Mac and we all know he would do the same. And now I’m thinking about all the percabeth scenes that could also be macriley. Spoiler. There’s a lot!

💻 Do you do research for your fics? What’s the deepest dive you’ve done? oh my lord yes. it sucks up SO much of my time, which is why i’m so excited that TLO takes place starting in march 2021 lmao 😅 (although let’s be honest, my brain will find a way to google every little thing anyway). for TD specifically, i always google the release date of every single song featured in the story/on the playlist to make sure it didn’t come out after the time frame in the story/chapter. i did hours of research on clothes, trends, slang, and popular media (movies/TV/music) before i even wrote a single word of chapter 1. i know more about bands from the 80s and 90s now than i ever thought i’d know (i could take down a “do you even listen to nirvana?” mansplainer in 0.5 seconds 😏). i google street names and local restaurants and hotels and literally every little thing i can manage because i’m super neurotic about even the most inconsequential details being 100% accurate. but the deepest dive i ever did was tracing Fleetwood Mac’s tour route in 1976 so i could get an exact date and location for the polaroid of Laura in chapter 4. i figured out that they had a tour from 1975-1976 that had several dates near chicago (where she was at the time), but i needed it to be one of the 1976 tour dates (Laura would have been born in 1960, which would make her 16 at the time of the show, and Colin was born in 1978 when Laura was 18, so it all had to track). so after a fuck ton of googling and clicking through Wikipedia page after Wikipedia page, i picked the June 26, 1976 show in Peoria, IL because it fit the best 💛

Notes:

Julius Brinley is older than Elizabeth Macbeth. “Grandpa” Macbeth died and “Grandma” Macbeth then had a child with Dīs Pater. There’s a lot of tension surrounding those two half-siblings, which is part of why there’s so much conflict between the Brinleys and the Macbeths.

The rest of the conflict is because the Brinleys are just power-hungry dicks.

Messalina is older than Brennus by a few years (about 4). Mac and Brennus are the same age.

Layla Avitus is older than her brother Cato.

Duff is about the same age as Cadeyrn and also chaotically nonbinary (their pronouns are linked to different types weather).

And if anyone was curious - the current plotline going on in the Grace Event featuring Mac, Cade, Dee, and Brennus takes place from approximately The Titan’s Curse [how Jason met Reyna] to The Last Olympian [Basically everything else]. During TLO, Mac, Cade, Dee, and Brennus are all in their early 20s.

This is not about being a “hater”. This is about helping you understand that Crisscolfer is based on faulty logic and lies. It’s about caring about the truth.

Abby wrote what I call a “masterpost” of the most recent proof she has that cc is still together. It’s the information she’s using right now to reassure herself that she’s right. The problem is that the conclusions she draws for why each social media post was made are illogical and erroneous conclusions. They aren’t logical, methodical, reasonable conclusion...period. 

Social media posts can be misleading and people certainly do make posts that portray a certain storyline. But it isn’t reasonable to conclude that Darren or Chris are using Instagram to tell their deepest darkest secrets to complete strangers. Neither man divulges much about their personal life on social media. In fact, the cc fandom mentions that often. Chris has a quote they love to repeat about not living on social media and Darren has said many times that he takes a lot of photos but he doesn’t post it online because he’s too busy living the moment. 

Let’s look at the post and analyze why Abby’s conclusions are wrong (my comments are italicized in parenthesis).

@ajw720 answered: not at all nonnie, not at all.  First, have you read ATOM?  I beg of you to read it if you have not. (I am reading it and it isn’t at all about Darren and Chris. It’s a story about children who are ostracized for being magical. It’s an allegory for being gay or being different in ways that society doesn’t accept. The children are sent to conversion therapy. It’s irrational and unreasonable to conclude it is a cc bible. The facts are: It’s a children’s book series, Chris isn’t interested in sharing his personal life at all with fans let alone, his deepest darkest secrets. Chris didn’t write an “It gets better” book for LGBTQ children only to use it to out Darren. Gay men don’t out other gay men by writing children's books. Chris has never said -or even hinted- it is an autobiography, he’s never suggested it is a love story based on his life. He started the series when he was 8 or 9 which included the character Froggy. Chris has several messages he likes to tell in his stories and he isn’t subtle in his lessons. He isn’t a subtle writer, yet Abby claims that at least 5 or 6 characters in TLOS are Darren and just as many are Chris. Instead of reading the book and hearing Chris’s message, she uses it for confirmation bias in a variety of characters and storylines. She finds the parts that FIT her PRECONCEIVED  idea of the cc storyline. It’s a fantasy-not realty. 

Second, have you seen the excessive use of the PA since october 25?  i believe a pic and/or video has been posted of him about 23 times in just about 4 weeks.  That is up from 0 in the 5  months that preceded it.  w is only required to be held out as the fake bf if cc is on. (This theory is predicated on the theory that Will is important to “cc is real”. This is another erroneous assumption that Abby concluded long ago as a way to explain why Will is around Chris so often. WIll is around because he is Chris’s boyfriend. Chris has said so with both his words and actions. Using Will’s presence on Chris’s social media as proof that cc is going strong- that Will is “mac and cheese” to the fandom is illogical-for one, out gay men do not have beards. There is no reason that Will showing up in Chris’s posts would prove cc is still together. That is another erroneous conclusion Abby reached long ago when she needed to explain away why Chris is posting pics of Will. The fact is that Will is always in Chris’s Halloween pics, their annual Disney trip, and Will’s birthday post. This year Chris also happened to post some other events they attended together so that he posted 10 pics of Will in the last 2 months.. Coming to the conclusion that Chris posting more pics of Will is proof of anything related to cc is like arguing that 1+1=322. Will being on Chris’s Instagram has nothing to do with Darren. The “23 videos and photos” include posts made by fans, friends and other people. It’s preposterous to claim that fan pics of Will or a friend posting his pic are because of the cc storyline).  

Did you watch the recent interview c did?  first it is brilliant so you should watch it.  and then he said this;

It is unfortunate that for some people you want to apply that phrase “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” to the mental side of things too.  But sometimes what doesn’t kill you, makes you suicidal. And it is really up to you “am i going to let this kill me or am i going to let this motivate me.” and sometimes when I hear people say this, i want to throw things at them, so I am going to say this very tongue and cheek, sometimes it really is a a choice, not a choice, sometimes I don’t think your point of view or interpretation  of things you are going through can be a choice.  Sometimes things are just so tragic that you just have to feel what you are feeling so it can work itself out.

(There is nothing in that quote that suggests he’s speaking about the last 5-6 years of his life or Darren Criss or a secret love or TPTB forcing Darren in the closet. He said that “sometimes the shit of life gets you down and how you respond matters”. He could be speaking about a lot of things that are very difficult for young adults. Claiming he said anything else is an irrational conclusion based on confirmation bias. She hears him speak about Darren because that is the storyline she already believes is true but Chris isn’t saying anything that suggests he’s speaking about Darren). 

C made sure to have an alibi the night of the fraud in NOLA. (Why would he need an alibi? The logical conclusion to why he posted about going to a friend’s show on Darren’s wedding night is they aren’t close friends and his post had nothing to do with Darren at all. But I’ll play along for a minute and imagine cc is real: If the love of his life was marrying someone they both “despise”, Chris would have been devastated, not out enjoying a night of entertainment-and walking a red carpet/photo op.  He barely does that ever- he certainly isn’t going to do it on his worst day.  He was with Will and he didn’t post the pic himself. If he was pushing a narrative then he would have posted the pic. It’s very unfair to claim that things that other people post are messages he is sending-it’s putting words into his mouth. Chris had no reason to prove he wasn’t in NOLA, he clearly wasn’t in the wedding photos. Claiming he went out to a show with his long-term boyfriend to prove he wasn’t with Darren at his wedding is a silly argument.)  

They walked around NYC dressed like twins on October 1, 2019.  And the hickey. (Concluding that two people who were wearing jeans, glasses and dark shirts are “dressed alike” is wrong enough but concluding that similarities in their lives prove they are a couple is preposterous. We all know that wasn’t a hickey for so many reasons from the shape to the fact it was gone in photos taken later that day to Darren wouldn’t walk around on a press day with a huge hickey on his neck. You can see from photos taken that day, they hardly looked like twins. There is nothing rationale about looking for similarities in their lives to prove they are in a secret relationship. They are nothing more than coincidences. Claiming it is a hickey after she was told by so many people that it wasn’t- including ccer is a great example of how Abby doubles down on lies if it suits her needs.  She isn’t interested in the truth- only proving she’s right.) 

C’s SM.  He just recently posted his second pic of him in a tinhat, the 1st right after the encage.  You know, the day he wore the shirt that says “everything you know is a lie.”  He really has had some blatant posts.  also, sometimes  reflection is a really interesting thing. (Again,  unreasonable conclusions are made: Chris’s “second tinhat” photo was a pic of him getting his hair highlighted with foils-a very common technique for highlighting hair. He posted it to garner publicity for his book tour.  It’s irrational to conclude that he was sending a secret message to a small group of fans to reassure them that he supports “tinhats” when Chris has actually said several times that he isn’t in a relationship with Darren and has expressed anger over fans’ comments about them as a couple. He also wrote a book that included the main character with Chris’s initials expressing his anger with fans shipping him with his costar. The first photo was not a support of Crisscolfer tinhatting but a reference to Chris’s own belief in aliens- he’s holding an alien stuffed toy and wearing a shirt that has aliens on it.)

They started with the release of pics with CC in the background, proving to the haters that they in fact our friends and then 2 weeks later, AF posted a pic that included C and PBB but no D. (Here we have an example of how Abby’s conclusions are based on several erroneous assumptions leading up to one big faulty conclusion. The tops of Chris and Darren’s heads were photographed at a busy, crowded party proving they were speaking and nothing more. Abby’s claim that they purposefully caused the riot assumes 1. that they planned the photograph, 2. they distributed the photograph or knew the right people would see it and get their message, 3.that either Chris or Darren- or both- are very interested and motivated to make sure that complete strangers know intimate details of their personal lives and that they both want to spread this information via very impersonal and public social media. Claiming that Ashley posted a pic of Mia to prove “cc is real” is another unreasonable conclusion.  Let’s address the assumptions: 1. There is no way they could tell the tops of their heads were in the camera frame. Even in an uncrowded room, it would be difficult but with several people between them and the camera, it just isn’t possible to know that the tops of their heads were within the frame. 2. They had no way of ensuring fans would get the message.  They couldn’t be sure that fans would stalk the party photos and find the tops of their heads in the background. If they wanted a photo of them talking seen by fans, they had several avenues of making that happen- they both have PR teams and their own social media accounts, and Darren’s team was there. 3. The theory that they intentionally caused a “cc riot” by doing nothing more than standing and chatting at a party isn’t logical. There is no reason for them to even want to share something like “Darren is closeted” or “Chris and Darren are in a relationship” with complete strangers and they would have no control of the messaging. Smart celebs don’t release info about themselves using a method that takes all control away from themselves.  It’s the same reason that I know Darren would never stand on a car and scream “I’m gay” to a bunch of strangers-it’s not smart. Claiming they intentionally wanted the world to know they were together at the party and therefore “still going strong”  means they purposefully put a deeply personal part of their private lives into the world in a way that gives something valuable to the cc fandom-reassurance- but gives Chris and Darren nothing in return. They lose control of their personal info-something important to both men- but they get nothing back. Neither Chris nor Darren share much information about their private lives and they certainly don’t do it on social media. When they do share personal stories, it is during interviews. Rationalizing that Ashley posted a photo of Mia to prove cc is real is another erroneous assumption. Nothing about that photo proves Chris and Darren are in a relationship-it proves that Ashley felt that photo was a good one to post for reasons she didn’t indicate but there is nothing to suggest she posted it on behalf of Chris to shade Mia)   

they are absolutely still going strong and I would say pay attention to the details, but at this point, you don’t even really need to look that close, it is incredibly blatant. (The confirmation bias in the cc fandom is all-encompassing. Abby simply cannot be wrong and she analyzes everything to find the “cc still going strong” storyline. She doesn’t look at the situation and learn from it, she twists reality to FIT HER storyline. “Pay attention to the details” is a euphemism for “twist the truth to make it cc positive”. It’s deeply disrespectful to both Chris and Darren to refuse to HEAR what either man is saying-or SEE how they are living- and instead, spend all of your time and effort rewriting their life stories. Basing your conclusions on faulty logic leads to misdirections-it’s how you find yourself believing untrue stories for a decade and counting. The question isn’t whether Chris and Darren’s private lives are different from how they present them- it is their prerogative to keep their personal lives private from the public. The question is why can’t you respect that their personal lives are theirs and only theirs and that fans have no right to debunk their truths? Why can’t you understand that going on their social media and posting about Crisscolfer is the most disrespectful and cruel thing you can do. Believing you know the truth about a stranger’s life because you are “paying attention”  while simultaneously ignoring everything that proves you are wrong is hurtful to Chris and Darren but it’s more hurtful to you. You are teaching yourself how to draw illogical conclusions and to make erroneous assumptions.You are literally grooming yourself to believe lies and it cannot be contained to the cc fandom, it is something that will sneak into the other parts of your life until you have no ability to make assessments and draw accurate conclusions about important things in your life.You will never understand when you are being conned because you’ve spent some -or all -of the last 10 years methodically teaching yourself how to disregard the truth, ignore facts, and draw illogical conclusions. 

I don’t know if Christian Bale actually said this, I can’t find it on his feed, but the sentiment is still 100% accurate-other celebs have expressed the same feeling

Jean-Claude Mezieres je 1983. godine napravio ilustraciju za francuski magazin Pilote na kojoj su se Luke Skywalker i Leia iz Star Warsa sreli sa Valerianom i Laureline iz njegovog stripa u baru, okruženi vanzemaljcima koji podsećaju na bića iz oba serijala. Leia ih pozdravlja rečenicom, “Drago mi je što vas vidim!” a Laureline joj odgovara, “Dugo smo mi ovde”.

Mezieres je crtač za kog se smatra da je umnogome uticao na dizajn savremenog naučnofantastičnog filma kroz svoj strip Valerian et Laureline, pa je samim tim uticao i na ono što se postavlja kao zadatak pred kreatore specijalnih efekata. Osnovna karakteristika Mezieresovog uticaja jeste uvođenje patine na brodove, ambijente i kostime junaka koji u svom osnovu ostaju unutar vizuelnog žargona pulpy SFa pedesetih ali kroz utisak potrošenosti potpuno menjaju kontekst. Ovakav crtež pratio je i scenario Pierrea Christina koji je unutar koncepata koji se nadovezuju na klasične SF trope vršio subverziju u domenu rodnih uloga i ideološkog predznaka. Taj uticaj preneo je Lucas u Star Wars i od tada space opere sve češće imaju tu realističku dimenziju trošenja materijala, junaci nisu besprekorno čisti i ispeglani, a svemirski brodovi pokazuju znakove raubovanja. Kasniji rad Jamesa Camerona odnosno Neilla Blomkampa dovešće tu estetiku svemirskih rita i krntija na potpuno nov nivo jer će u te priče uvesti ne samo trošne objekte već i junake iz radničke klase prilično udaljene od isklesanih lica i tela Flasha Gordona ili Barbarelle, ali će se neumitno i udaljiti od imaginarijuma klasičnog SFa i njegovog pulpy dizajna.

Mezieresov uticaj na filmove je izuzetno dubok, počev od Star Warsa posle kog se samo granao. Kad je reč o njegovom konkretnom angažmanu, bio je nešto manji ali podjednako interesantan. Naime, Mezieres je verovatno najpoznatiji po tome što je bio jedan od dizajnera na Bessonovom filmu The Fifth Element koji je u određenom smislu i bio prvo ljubavno pismo ovog reditelja stripu Valerian et Laureline. U ovom filmu Mezieres je uradio redizajn Njujorka, naročito nekih prepoznatljivih obeležja kao što su yellow cabovi ili policijska kola. Sličan pristup redizajnu prepoznatljivih obeležja sadašnjosti i pomeranja u dalju budućnost prepoznavaćemo posle Fifth Elementa na mnogim mestima, pa recimo i u našem animiranom filmu Edit i ja Alekse Gajića. Međutim, Mezieres je pre toga bio angažovan na jednom od zanimljivijih naučnofantastičnih filmskih ekscesa osamdesetih a to je nemačko-sovjetska ekranizacija Braće Strugacki pod naslovom Es ist nicht leicht ein Gott zu sein Petera Fleischmanna. Ovaj film se ne smatra definitivnom ekranizacijom te proze, pre par godina je Aleksej German snimio svoju verziju, ali na ovoj je radio kreativni tim Valeriana – scenarista Pierre Christin je pisao a Mezieres je radio delom iskorišćeni ali mahom na kraju neupotrebljeni concept art i storyboard. Christin je kao scenarista bio prisutniji na filmu jer je sarađivao sa strip autorom našeg porekla Enkijem Bilalom na njegovom filmu Bunker Palace Hotel koji je inače sniman u Beogradu.

Tendencija koju su poslednjih godina u domenu specijalnih efekata doneli filmovi poput Gravityja Alfonsa Cuarona ili Lifea Daniela Espinose bila je usmerena ka stvaranju realističkih rekonstrukcija svemirskih putovanja i praktično permanentnu upotrebu neke vrste kompjuterskih intervencija. Junaci ovih filmova su za početak u bestežinskom stanju, nalaze se u ambijentima koji su replika ili uverljiva parafraza postojećih svemirskih postrojenja ili letelica. Space opere su međutim bile bazirane na potpuno drugim premisama, one su zanemarile naučni faktor i za početak uvek prikazivale brodove koji mahom potpuno volšebno imaju gravitaciju, često čak i bez prstenova koji bi hipotetički mogli da je proizvode svojim okretanjem. Poneke space opere poput Marvelovih Guardians of the Galaxy su uzele u obzir inovacije koje je doneo Gravity i nove tehnologije pa su imale barem po jednu zero gravity scenu, pouzdano vezujući junake za pod ili tlo ostatak vremena.

Bessonova ekranizacija Mezieresovog i Christinovog stripa pod naslovom Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets drži se retro pristupa. Gravitacija je omniprezentna i nema nikakvih naučnih ili sitnorealističkih opterećenja. Kopča između estetike Gravityja i Valeriana postoji u uvodnoj sekvenci koja nas vodi iz 20. veka i prvog spoja u svemiru 1975. kada su Apollo i Sojuz imali randevu sve do 2150. godine kada se dešava Bessonova priča. U toj montažnoj sekvenci, Besson prikazuje postepenu transformaciju sveta od onoga što danas poznajemo kao svemirsko putovanje do nesputane futurističke fantazije. To putovanje u budućnost je na zanimljiv način zapravo putovanje u prošlost – ne samo u pogledu trendova u svetu filma, pa i tehničke realizacije efekata, već i idejno jer Besson praktično kaže da nam progres u dalekoj budućnosti donosi ispunjenje starih snova. To je uostalom na neki način i njegov sudbinski stav u pogledu Valeriana – svoj dečački san ispunio je na vrhuncu poslovne i rediteljske zrelosti.

Dizajn po duhu jeste blizak Mezieresovoj estetici ambijenata u kojima neko već živi i radi, međutim zadatak koji je postavljen pred efekte jeste da prikažu žestoko intenzivirano čulno iskustvo koje insistira na uvođenju futurističkih verzija poznatih stvari ali i potpuno novih pronalazaka odnosno bića koja imaju jasnu stripovsku stilizaciju i sugestivnu mimiku.

U tom pogledu, Besson zapravo pravi tehnički proboj eventualno u pogledu obima efekata koje je trebalo realizovati, naročito ako imamo u vidu koliko su oni prisutni čak i u filmovima koji ne govore o nepostojećim svetovima fantastike. U pogledu tehničke inovacije međutim, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets mahom postavlja već savladane zadatke pred svoje stručnjake za efekte.

‘Valerian’ sadrži 2,355 kadrova sa vizualnim efektima, 600 više nego ‘Rogue One’.

Kompjuterski generisani likovi imaju stripovsku sugestivnost, iz samog izgleda se prepoznaje da li je reč o pozitivnim ili negativnim junacima i njihova ekspresija bazirana je na jednostavnoj mimici. Dakle. Valerian svakako ne zahteva suptilnost u glumačkoj igri kompjuterski generisanih likova kao recimo War for the Planet of the Apes. Štaviše, čak i likovi vanzemaljaca sa planete Mul koji evociraju Na’avije iz Avatara po svojoj tehničkoj realizaciji nemaju dovoljno prominentnu ulogu u priči da bi se pred njih postavili oni glumački zadaci koje su imali Cameronovi glumci pre osam godina. Stoga, osnovni izazov u tehničkom pogledu u ovom filmu jeste dizajn. I zbilja Bessonov Valerian je film koji zaslužuje kolekcionarski tretman na Blu Rayu jer obiluje detaljima koji se mogu u potpunosti sagledati tek iz više gledanja.

Pojedine scene su međutim i dramaturški zapravo omogućene savremenim razvojem specijalnih efekata. Tu pre svega mislim na veliku bravura-sekvencu izvlačenja konvertera na svemirskoj pijaci. Sasvim je sigurno da su pored Bessona, ko-autori te scene majstori za specijalne efekte bez kojih ova kompleksna scena ne bi mogla biti realizovana. Kad govorim o nemogućnosti realizacije bez vrhunskog tima za specijalne efekte pritom ne govorim samo o tehničkoj usavršenosti već upravo o načinu razmišljanja koji omogućuje kreiranje takve scene u kojoj junak paralelno postoji i deluje u dve dimenzije, i pritom sreće niz kompjuterski generisanih bića u ambijentima koji takođe postoje u dve ravni. Uprkos visokom prisustvu kompjuterskih efekata u savremenim filmovima, ova sekvenca je jedna od onih za koje je jasno da ne bi bile ni zamišljane a nekmoli započete u periodu pre ovakvog napretka tehnike.

U tom pogledu Besson uspeva da snimi scenu koja je u duhu onih inovacija koje su donosili Zemeckis, Cameron i Spielberg kada su u filmovima poput Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Terminator 2, Jurassic Park ili Forrest Gump pomerali granice filmske iluzije kroz priču koja ih je činila neophodnim. Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets je po svojoj formi, sadržaju i budžetu film koji se mora smatrati holivudskim. Međutim, u svojoj suštini, na raznim nivoima, od glumačke podele do nekih idiosinkratičnih narativnih i vizuelnih detalja on to nije. Bessonovu zamisao u kojoj se vrlo često izlazi izvan holivudskog koloseka pune narativne efikasnosti, prate i majstori za efekte koji u mnogim situacijama realizuju i sitne offbeat momente kompjuterski generisanih likova. U izvesnom smislu Valerian ne samo tematski i stilski, već i po tim sitnim detaljima može biti posmatran kao film-blizanac drugom delu Guardians of the Galaxy koji je u scenarističkom ali i vizuelnom pogledu podosta odstupio od holivudskih kalupa ove godine.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets je baziran na stripu iz kog su pozajmljivali možda i najuticajniji filmovi našeg vremena. Samim tim došao je u bioskope sa sličnim opterećenjem kao i John Carter Andrewa Stantona pre pet godina, i suočio se sa primedbama da su mnoge njegove postavke već viđene i korišćene. U tehničkom pogledu, isto važi i za Valerianove specijalne efekte jer se onda i oni neumitno porede sa filmovima koji su izrasli iz Mezieresovog i Christinovog načina razmišljanja. Međutim, estetika tih filmova, pre svega serijala Star Wars se u međuvremenu transformisala (pogledajmo recimo Rogue One) i Valerian danas može da se izdvoji pre svega svojom retro-estetikom koja biva urađena na najsavremeniji način. Stoga, možemo reći da se Besson načelno ali ne i u potpunosti držao uzusa savremenog blokbastera i da je akcenat stavio ipak na ispunjavanje svog dugogodišđnjeg sna da ekranizuje Mezieresov i Christinov strip. Ekipa zadužena za efekte je svojim radom uspela da isprati njegov autorski pristup i da se u istoj meri razlikuje od standarda koji postavljaju generički blokbasteri.
