My #junewrapup! I have felt constantly bad this month about the amount of time I have spent reading this month, mostly because I still feel so behind on everything from the massive adjustment of suddenly having the kids at home way back in March. But this week I finished two of the biggest boulders that have been weighing me down, and I immediately celebrated by finishing the book I had been in the middle of for weeks and reading another cover to cover. I am still behind on many, many things, but I am also going ON VACATION next week, so maybe I will give myself permission to spend more time reading this month. . . In the middle of the month I committed to Day One of the #juneteenthreadathon and read: ❤️FREEDOM IS A CONSTANT STRUGGLE ❤️OUR NIG ❤️SULA All were from the #zoracanon, all were excellent. I posted about them all earlier this month. . . This month was also #readcaribbean, and the Caribbean was the focus for #readtheworld21 as well. So the two books I finished this week were: 🧡MADE IN SATURN 🧡WIDE SARGASSO SEA And I posted mini-reviews of both yesterday. . . In #familyreadaloud time this month we finished: 💚THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING 💚SAL & GABI FIX THE UNIVERSE Chances are, you already have an opinion about Tolkien, and I know I already spend a lot of time flailing enthusiastically about Sal & Gabi & Carlos Hernandez, but... FLAIL. There are a rare number of books that, if you read them aloud to your family, will make you feel clever, hilarious, and kind, all at the same time. Off of the top of my head that list is: The Sal & Gabi books by Carlos Hernandez The Tiffany Aching books by Terry Pratchett Tristan Strong by Kwame Mbalia There are other books that I have loved reading to my family for a wide variety of reasons, but these win the trifecta. . . No poetry last month, which I feel bad about. My over-ambitious-as-usual #junetbr. . . FREEDOM IS A CONSTANT STRUGGLE and OUR NIG are for a Juneteenth readathon I will participate in. I am sure I will make a longer readathon TBR later, but these two I for sure want to get to. . . MADE IN SATURN, REASONS OF STATE, and WIDE SARGASSO SEA are for #readtheworld21. I can’t believe I haven’t read SARGASSO yet, and I am so excited for SATURN, the next book by the author of TENTACLE, which I shouted about for months last year. . . AN ELEGANT DEFENSE is a holdover from last month. I am interested, I just haven’t been in the headspace for a massive nonfiction tome. . . WEST FROM APPOMATTOX is a buddy read with my dad! Book haul! Once again, I was ONLY supposed to be picking up a pre-order at my local bookstore (for Made in Saturn FINALLY, I don’t know why it took so long, but it’s the next book by Rita Indiana, author of Tentacle, so I was IN), but as long as I was THERE, I decided to check out the used book section. I ended up picking up a copy of Cat’s Cradle — my favorite Vonnegut. I had borrowed my dad’s copy as a teen and somehow never gotten my own. ALSO, I had just gone through @theartisangeek’s book recommendation video tree and ended up with A Blade So Black as my result. So when I found a lovely hardcover in the used section I HAD to buy it, right? Then it turns out the book was autographed and personalized! I wonder what happened to the mysterious girl who had a book signed to her and then sold it for probably $3 or so in store credit? Who knows? But her loss is my gain. . . So, this isn’t entirely a Black lit post, but because A BLADE SO BLACK is the book from the final challenge, I am tagging this #blacklitchallenge anyway. . .
