“Knowledge is power, and the world is set against you knowing anything, so when someone's trying to teach you something, pay attention.” L.L. McKinney, A Blade So Black One of the great books I have read this month is A Blade So Black by L.L. McKinney! ♣️❤️I love Alice in Wonderland retellings, especially with strong fighting women. McKinney’s creative lore is a unique take on Wonderland and the vorpal sword. ♠️♦️ The book is pictured on the Rifle Paper Co. 💬 If you were a superhero, what would your super power be? . Thank you to @dccomics #DCPartner for gifting me this copy of Nubia: Real One by @ll_mckinney! This is a poignant #OwnVoices YA graphic novel that brings DC’s first Black female superhero (and Wonder Woman’s Black twin sister) into the spotlight in a tale that explores the racist dichotomy of how Black vs. White superheroes are perceived and what it’s like growing up as a Black teen (and superhero) in a world filled with racial inequality, police brutality, school violence and more timely issues affecting young people today. . . Thank you to @vasaglefurniture for gifting me this gorgeous bookshelf! They have so many beautiful pieces, so be sure to stop by and check out their store! . . Tuesday’s Treats is a weekly blog post dedicated to newly released books that I’m most excited for. (Books are in no particular order.)
All books featured this week will be released: SEPT. 25th (1 of 2)
1. Vengeful (The Villians: 1): V.E. Schwab (goodreads) (book depository)
A sequel to Schwab’s Vicious….here…in my hands…. Need I say more?
Vicious is a fantastic anti-hero story following former roommates now enemies on their paths for revenge. If you haven’t read it yet, it’s a fantastic fantasy novel that I highly recommend.
Fantasy; Tor/Macmillan, Hardcover (US)
2. An Absolutely Remarkable Thing: Hank Green (goodreads) (book depository)
I’ve been waiting for this day for far too long. I’ve been watching Hank (and his brother John) on Youtube (aka: the Vlogbrothers) for years, and Hank has always explained broad ideas in such a concise and humorous way. I cannot wait to see how that translates into fiction.
An Absolutely Remarkable Thing follows April as she deals with her life after she uploads a viral video onto YouTube. Her video isn’t an ordinary viral video; it turns out that April becomes the first documentarian of the Carls: ten-foot-tall Transformers who are wearing samurai armor. With her newfound fame, April has to deal with new pressures, like keeping her relationships together, but also finding out what the Carls are, and what they want.
Contemporary Fiction; Dutton/Penguin, Hardcover (US)
3. The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein: Kiersten White (goodreads) (book depository)
A retelling of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein from Elizabeth’s — an orphan taken in by the Frankensteins and then Victor’s fiancée — point of view. Victor may have created a monster, but Elizabeth knows that there are some things scarier than a monster in a Victorian woman’s life, and she’s determined to do whatever it takes to stay alive.
I absolutely loved Kiersten White’s trilogy The Conqueror’s Saga, which is a reimagining of Vlad the Impaler’s life. I’m interested to see what she does with this well loved and well known story, but also make it her own. (It seems like the perfect Halloween read, too.)
YA Science Fiction, Retelling; Delacorte Press/Random House, Hardcover (US)
4. A Blade So Black: L.L. McKinney (goodreads) (book depository)
Alice wasn’t prepared when the Nightmares came. But now, she’s trained with magic weapons and fighting skills taught by a handsome mentor in the dark dream world, Wonderland, and she can fight back. Balancing her real life problems with Wonderland problems is tough, but when Alice’s mentor is poisoned, she has to truly venture into Wonderland to find him a cure.
YA Fantasy, Retelling; Imprint/Macmillan, Hardcover (US)
5. Give the Dark My Love (Give the Dark My Love: 1): Beth Revis (goodreads) (book depository)
Nedra is attending the Yugen Academy for one reason, and one reason only: to learn all she can about medicinal alchemy. As someone who’s grown up in the rural, northern territories of Lunar Island, it’s a bit of a culture shock at the Academy when Nedra is suddenly dealing with the Island’s wealthiest and most powerful families. But she can’t let that distract her, especially once a plague starts sweeping through the North, quickly racking up body counts as it sweeps through the land. Nedra, along with another student Greggori “Grey” Astor, ventures deep into their studies to find a cure, anything to save the people, especially her family. But as the body count rises and it seems like a cure is so far out of reach, Nedra turns to the forbidden: she turns to necromancy.
YA Fantasy; Razorbill/Penguin, Hardcover (US)

Yall give me all the young black female superheroes. I want them ALL. This graphic novel was amazing. Not only is Nubia: Real One by @ll_mckinney who is the author of the #NightmareVerse series but it also tackles topics that today's teens face: racism, sexism, protest, and school shootings. Much like #TheFalconAndTheWinterSoldier this examines how life is different for Black superheroes than their white counterparts. I can't wait to share this with my girls. #DCComics #wonderwoman #NubiaRealOne #LLMcKinney #racism #sexism #schoolshootings #protest #blacksuperheroes #blackwomanauthors #supportblackcreators #blackgirlsread #POCbookstagrammer #nerdymama #nerdybooks #bookstagram (at Big Lick Comics) https://www.instagram.com/p/CNz56qZLhg1/?igshid=1x62zd5lb3qxa

#bookreview for ♠️A Blade So Black ♠️ 🖤♥️♣️♦️♠️♥️♣️♦️♠️🤍🖤I’m a high school English teacher, and I live and work in a community that is approximately 68% Latinx, 20% Black, 8% white, 4% Asian/Mixed. So let that be the preface for my review of A Blade So Black and my assertion that this book is REQUIRED READING. ♥️An urban fantasy BIPOC Alice in Wonderland retelling is VITAL for a multitude of reasons. The first being that hopefully it is abundantly clear that children and teens and even adults reading YA need to see themselves represented in literature. ♠️Additionally, it’s important that the BIPOC characters be MAIN characters. Not token characters, or sassy-best-friend-sidekick characters. Those are great. But ultimately limiting. ♦️While the first 100 pages *feel* (they’re not, actually) slow pace-wise, the character and world building is absolutely necessary, especially if this book is your introduction to the Alice In Wonderland canon. ♣️After pg 100, the pace is break-neck and the plot is full-tilt action. Alice is a fully formed heroine with tragedy at her back. She’s complicated and her dialogue is so rich and authentic I had a hard time forgetting that she’s not really one of my students! 🤍 I loved seeing Wonderland and Atlanta through her eyes, and cannot wait to read the next two books in the series. 🖤 Hatta is maddeningly wonderful and awful simultaneously. Maddie is precious and needs to be protected. Court, I can’t figure out, and that’s okay. Chess. Oh, Chess. Black Knight?? Hooooooo boy! THAT plot line just gets curiouser and curiouser. #blacklivesmatter #blackoutpublishingpower #amplifymelanatedvoices #bipoc #readabook #englishteacher #secondaryela #iteachtoo #iteachhighschool #booksbooksbooks #bookstagram #teachergram #llmckinney (at Gainesville, Georgia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CCrqnmeh-OA/?igshid=1uh97tvp739e3

We love this twist on Alice in Wonderland with Black Girl Magic. We hope you’ll join us! ⁣ ⁣ SUMMARY:⁣ For fans of Marissa Meyer, L.L. McKinney's A Blade So Black delivers an irresistible urban fantasy retelling of Alice in Wonderland... but it's not the Wonderland you remember.⁣ ⁣ The first time the Nightmares came, it nearly cost Alice her life. Now she's trained to battle monstrous creatures in the dark dream realm known as Wonderland with magic weapons and hardcore fighting skills. Yet even warriors have a curfew.⁣ ⁣ Life in real-world Atlanta isn't always so simple, as Alice juggles an overprotective mom, a high-maintenance best friend, and a slipping GPA. Keeping the Nightmares at bay is turning into a full-time job. But when Alice's handsome and mysterious mentor is poisoned, she has to find the antidote by venturing deeper into Wonderland than she’s ever gone before. And she'll need to use everything she's learned in both worlds to keep from losing her head... literally.⁣ ⁣ Author L.L. McKinney delivers an action-packed twist on an old classic, full of romance and otherworldly intrigue.⁣ 📸 by @fiercereads 🖤❤️🖤♠️♣️♥️♦️ ⁣ #llmckinney #blackfantasy #blackgirlmagic #imprintreads #fiercereads #blackgirlswithmagicbooks https://www.instagram.com/p/B_qh4v9g_Zs/?igshid=1lwtqolygfi7z

Book haul! Once again, I was ONLY supposed to be picking up a pre-order at my local bookstore (for Made in Saturn FINALLY, I don’t know why it took so long, but it’s the next book by Rita Indiana, author of Tentacle, so I was IN), but as long as I was THERE, I decided to check out the used book section. I ended up picking up a copy of Cat’s Cradle — my favorite Vonnegut. I had borrowed my dad’s copy as a teen and somehow never gotten my own. ALSO, I had just gone through @theartisangeek’s book recommendation video tree and ended up with A Blade So Black as my result. So when I found a lovely hardcover in the used section I HAD to buy it, right? Then it turns out the book was autographed and personalized! I wonder what happened to the mysterious girl who had a book signed to her and then sold it for probably $3 or so in store credit? Who knows? But her loss is my gain. . . So, this isn’t entirely a Black lit post, but because A BLADE SO BLACK is the book from the final challenge, I am tagging this #blacklitchallenge anyway. . . I need a readathon to catch up on all the books I want to read this month! . . #bookhaul #schulerbooks #madeinsaturn #ritaindiana #sydneyhutchinson #andotherstories #kurtvonnegut #catscradle #abladesoblack #llmckinney https://www.instagram.com/p/B8zIXWkgaYZ/?igshid=o0uxuwvpq7j3

HELLO FOLKS I HAVE A FUN ANNOUNCEMENT TO MAKE
A while back, over on Twitter, I mentioned that I wished there was a D&D podcast that was run and played by Young Adult authors. I also specifically said that given my relative inexperience with D&D and my zero experience with podcasts/sound editing/etc. I should absolutely not run the game.
To which all I can say now is, uh, yEET
Long story short: @adibkhorram, @glitzandshadows, @linseymiller, @llmckinney, and @onlybylaura are now putting up with my terrible, terrible DMing, and we’re putting the whole mess online. We’ll be revealing the party members over on the official twitter starting Sunday, and then the first episode will go live Wednesday, December 12th, at noon PST. I hope you have a chance to listen, and I hope you enjoy!
