Tonight my thoughts went back to my family & friends in California (+ other states), to another holiday season miles away from home, and to those wonderful memories that trick my mind into feeling as if I’m closer to home than I actually am. Reddish-brown in color, a lot of caramel and sweetness on the nose. The flavor is caramel up-front, toasted malt, a little sweetness with a medium-bodied mouth feel. That’s a quick review of the Batch 56 Beer of the Week: Jamaica Red Ale from @madriverbrews (for the full review, click the link in our profile). Life (or “Vacationing”, if you like,) on the road is always fun and full of twists & turns... A flat tire messed up our trip to Blue Lake and the Humboldt Folklife Festival today, but at least the tire was successfully replaced, and I was able to try Mad River Brewery’s Steelhead Extra Pale Ale at Trinidad’s Headies Pizza And Pour, where we also ate a variety of delicious pizza slices (I had hoped to try Mad River’s beers at the festival, but...). Then we headed back to my father’s cabin in the redwoods where I kicked butt at Scrabble (where a mix of Dutch/Flemish and English was allowed), and I finished off a WC hopped “Belgian-style Blond” Defenestration (would many in Belgium also like to toss some politicians out of a building?) and a Blind Pig (one of my fav’s, a beer I always go back to) by Russian River Brewing Company (Santa Rosa, CA). This evening I took a couple chances with this fruity (lightly salted) Everyone Gose Mad from Mad River Brewing (Blue Lake, CA) and this organic slightly sweet yet decent enough Porter (with some chocolate and caramel malt) from Eel River Brewing Co (Scotia, CA).
