Social media and self-esteem
Around two months ago a friend of mine (A.) and I had a conversation about different pages and people on Instagram. We were discussing different things and why we have chosen to follow accounts that we are following now. A. told me that she had never followed different models and bloggers on Instagram before but eventually, she started to think that they somewhat have interesting content and decided to give it a chance and began to follow them.
After some time, looking at their pages and reading about their so-called perfect life she understood that a new feeling started to arise inside her, a negative feeling that can have a bad effect on our self-esteem, the feeling of insecurity and self-doubt.
Tumblr media
Every day when A. was looking at all the pictures and reading different stories she had these thoughts inside her head that she was not enough, she was not that beautiful and gorgeous, she did not have a perfect life that everyone on social media is trying to show us. At that moment she truly gave me a shock since in my personal opinion she is one of the most talented, smart and beautiful girls I have ever met. I did not understand why she felt that way. I know that is normal, even though it is very sad, that numerous people can feel insecure, but I had never thought before that it could be due to social media.
Probably, that was a moment when I decided to make it a theme for my project. At first, I began to ask my friends how they feel about social media: Instagram, Facebook, Tumblr, Snapchat and etc. All of them had a different opinion and their own thoughts. However, at the same time, most of the answers were similar. Half of my friend said, in my opinion, the right thing: if a person has healthy self-esteem then social media will not have a bad effect on it. Another half told me that even if a person has a good opinion and love themselves he or she may start to have doubts and there would be a question in their head “Am I good enough?”.
At the end of my project, I hope I will be able to get more information about self-esteem in the 21st century and to find out if there can be a cure for this.

Learning Journal - Terry
My learning objective for the first unit would be to discover the impact of colour used in movies/fashion film/fashion photography. I would like to draw useful conclusions of effective usage of colours on story telling.

80′s Nostalgia in TV Shows & Movies
There is a sudden influx of shows and films like Stranger Things, Riverdale, Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Atomic Blonde, all imitating the 80′s pop culture vibe. Right from the background score, art direction, styling everything seems a moment back in time. We are also seeing similar trends in fashion with collection dedicated to the 90′s kids. So is it just a mere co-incidence?
An interesting excerpt from an article I read recently-
“So all those 1980s throwbacks at the movies and on TV you're seeing these days? Part of the nostalgia may simply be because of the fact that '80s kids are growing up and making our entertainment, but part of it is most certainly also due to the eerie coincidence that our current cultural climate and political landscape reflects that era. The stylistic choices are a little less worrisome than the political connections, of course, but hey, with the possibility of nuclear annihilation on the horizon and political mistrust everywhere we look, we're at least getting some sweet synth pop and bright colors along the ride.”

DiY Cultures: Party & Protest in Nineties Britain
Ed. George Mckay (1998)
In this book I found examples of the underground rejecting the mainstream within early 90s dance culture, through organising large groups of people and sound systems for raves:
“Beyond these cultural and artistic shifts, the most celebrated aspect of dance culture is its decentralised mode of organisation and revolutionary forms of participation. In this instance more like punk than northern soul, early dance events grew from ground level, organised by the participants for their own satisfaction. There was no strict separation between organisers and crowd, with regular party-goers often finding themselves helping in the running of the events. This added to the effect that dancing has always of loosening social restraints to unite people of all colours and classes.”
“However, these legal parties held in marquees were easily identified and stopped by a police force wary of potential noise and nuisance. This set the scene for what was to follow - the explosion of illegal, underground warehouse parties that abandoned the bureaucratic structure of licenses and health and safety regulations, and instead sought spaces where the penetrating gaze of the law could not reach.”
Also, how new tools for protest were discovered through the availability of the video camcorder, which in turn produced ‘alternative news’ video magazines:
“A camcorder becomes a powerful political instrument that can deter police violence. An edit suite becomes a means for setting a political agenda. A video projector becomes a mechanism for generating mass awareness.”
“Nineties technology is generally fully embraced: DiY activists and cultural workers have employed innovations in information technology, from desktop publishing to the internet for the purposes of publicity, campaigning and mobilisation.”

In the end, I decided to do a presentation of these pictures. Photos for Instagram were edited, making the skin and body as beautiful as possible and for “real life” I only used a filter.  In addition, one day ago I read an article about CVS and how they are going to stop using editing pictures in their store. Even though I still think that there will always be a problem of beauty standards, I still hope that I am wrong.

#Colour as interaction engender# Through colour projection, viewers perceive different views depending on which angle and attitude they see. Useful interaction also happens where viewers can see others as different garments we wear result in different projection effects.

https://www.newyorker.com/cartoons/cartoon-desk/introducing-new-yorker-cartoons-in-augmented-reality
The NewYorker presents AR features by recognising the real objects as target image, which is absolutely incredable. The program has to first recognise a familiar image target to augment the space. This example shows that any real object can be augmented
