May 29, 2018 Mix
Hey everyone, I love this week's mix, it's very me, it's very summer, it's very vibey and fun, but also reminiscent and feels. I hope you feel the same and sing along and enjoy and have fun with it! (Music Blog) Spotify Playlist 1. Hide by Rainbow Kitten Surprise - I absolutely can't get enough of RKS especially in the summer listening to their new album, but this song is so special. It tells a piece of the front man's story of coming out as gay quite recently and talking openly about it. It's beautiful 2. A Screw Fell From His Head by Spud Cannon - This title already made me want to listen, but the actual song was so satisfying. It actually tells a story about falling in love and people coming undone by the love because of its intensity. The guitar/drum action is awesome. 3. Mind Mischief by Tame Impala - Such hardcore Beatles vibes from this track off of their sophomore album, Lonerism, which is definitely on par with their Currents album. This is before Parker fully found his individualistic sound and was definitely toying around with 70s hippie powers. 4. Mold Baby (& The Queen Midas) by The So So Glos - An ugly, imperfect voice is sometimes my favorite thing in the whole world for a cute song and that's exactly what this is. I actually think there's some Mick Jagger vocal undertones for sure in the cadence and delivery of the lines which is cool. Love the play on King Midas and the words gold/mold. 5. Sweet Bird by Young Hunting - An old sounding tune/lyrics with new instrumental vibes for this one. Actually, I think this totally falls into the category of songs that are appropriate to slow dance to at prom, if prom actually played cool/alternative music instead of trashy pop. Love this. 6. Summer Wine by Nancy Sinatra - I heard Lana Del Rey's version first and needed to know where the original came from and was so pleasantly surprised. This song is the most nostalgia grabbing that you can get, just the description of noted flavors in a wine really gets me. Not to mention that it's perfect for the season we're in right now. 7. I Only Have Eyes For You by Tashaki Miyaki - If you're into Mazzy Star, guarantee you'll like this. Just the shoo-bop sound of this song with the airy voice at the forefront makes you feel like you're laying on a blanket in the forest looking at constellations with a warm breeze. We love new songs that emulate older sounds and chord progressions. 8. Talking Backwards by Real Estate - Communication problems in a relationship? Real Estate relates with you... because this is all what this song is about. It's like when you try to say something to fix a problem, but only seem to complicate it more. But add pretty voice and pretty music and then you get this gem of a song. 9. Prune, You Talk Funny by Gus Dapperton - On the other hand, we have this song in which the singer says he loves the way his love speaks because it's so beautiful. This goes through a very new, springtime phase of love, and the music definitely replicates that feeling with it's electro indie synthesizing sounds included. 10. She'll Come Back For Indian Summer by Alpaca Sports - A less known band, very dream pop inspired brand of band. A typical song about waiting for a love and not knowing what the outcome of a relationship will be, but holding on to hope. It is very summer vibes and looking back at a summer fling with a light feeling. 11. Twice by Catfish and the Bottlemen - I have now included a few Catfish songs on these weeks of music, but I think they totally deserve the hype because there's never a time where their songs come on and I don't roll my windows down and scream them really loud. This one's all about regretting things and going over the process of how that decision was made in your head, and then basically getting high to forget it all. 12. Help Your Self by Courtney Barnett - A song about keeping a positive perspective about things, but remembering not to settle for a lazy life just because it's an easy way to be. The guitar shreds in this song and is almost more important than Barnett's voice because it adds so much depth and personality to the song. I love how she disses whoever she's talking about in this, saying that they are fake with finding inner peace. 13. Mrs. by Leon Bridges - I'm so happy with this new album and how he kind of found a modern sound, but this track is very reminiscent of his previous songs still with some new elements. The guitar riff is so iconic and his words are legitimate poetry here. "Skin to skin / Before you knew how to get under mine" that has to be my favorite play on words. 14. 1950 by King Princess - Giving some well deserved promotion to my dad's friend's daughter, who assumed the pseudonym "King Princess" and sings about queer identity and acceptance within our society and the building tolerance among each other. Not to mention that you can totally bop to this. 15. Gemini Feed by Banks - It's been decided that Banks is a total queen and we love her so much. But this particular track is so dance-worthy and I literally cannot stop singing the "passive aggressive" part because, well, yes I relate. Plus, it is now the height of Gemini season so it only makes sense to give a Gemini titled song some extra love. 16. Fallingwater by Maggie Rogers - A brand new track, like 5 days old, by one of my new female faves. Her voice is really showcased with just the simple piano and percussion track layered in the back. Rogers is always really in tune with nature and the elements, and she continues to showcase this natural vibe in this song as well which I'm with. 17. I Don't Know You by The Marías - This shady, sultry, groovy, cool girl song is everything you need in your life at the moment, because I needed it in mine. It's very bass driven which definitely speaks to some 70s Fleetwood Mac tones mixed with bedroom pop modern tones as well. 18. Middle America by Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks - A seemingly laid back folky rock song that you think will kind of just have a blasé meaning to it. But then Malkmus brings up that men are scum and alludes to how lies will come undone when people die and you're just like... wow he did that. We love a man openly saying that men are scum and do bad things.   19. Gun Song by The Lumineers - This is a song all about realization that sometimes we do not know the people we are closest to, even after they're gone. Wesley Schultz actually talked about this song and said that he wrote this after finding a gun in his dad's sock drawer after he passed away and was so shocked and taken aback. I love the raw feeling you get listening to this, you can tell it's real. 20. Flowers Never Bend With The Rainfall by Paul Simon - Just because I feel like Malkmus and Lumineers both took qualities from Simon and the whole revolution of folk indie from the 60s and 70s. Also, because the lyrics of this short and sweet song were totally written as a poem before they were transformed into this beauty, and I am a sucker for good poetry. This acoustic one can lull you to calmness. Thanks for tuning in
