Teensy bit of self-promotion here:
I’m going to be published in a fantasy anthology next month with eleven other authors who, unlike me, actually know what they’re doing. We were given a press packet to shamelessly plaster all over the internet, so if you like that sort of thing, pre-orders of the ebook are up now and the print copy is forthcoming.
Here’s a link, because typing is hard: http://mybook.to/MagicDestiny
(Also, thanks @fluent-in-lesbianism for pointing me in the right direction on the background research on stuttering!)

Pairing: Carter Lacroix (OC)/Jay Reso Quote: Through wind and darkness I summon thee. Verse: Magic
Destiny didn’t bring Jay Reso and Carter Lacroix together. That had been the two of them. Carter had been nothing but the apprentice to his father Harris, learning to handle the element of earth. Harris was an adept geomancer who worked primarily with rocks and mountains. Carter found the earth to be a calming domain. It was steady, very rarely changing, reliable. It was through his position with his father that Carter had met the Reso brothers. Adam was a healer, a fitting match for the reckless spirit that Harris possessed. Jay on the other hand? Jay worked with plants. Carter always found the fact that their powers coincided to be proof that the two were meant to be together. Destiny didn’t make them soul mates, that was all Carter and Jay. Jay was a soft man, someone that Carter Lacroix could spend all of his time with. That softness was at its best when Jay would come back to their apartment, dirt smudged across his nose and a tired smile behind such soft eyes. It was in the way that during coven meetings Jay was always more benevolent than Harris or Adam. Then again, there was a difference in softness and weakness. Carter had seen that in the way Jay had stood up to fellow coven member Bobby Roode. Bobby was a cruel man whose magic was focused on glamour, a man who had used that power to control others. In retaliation for his abuse of powers, Jay had been the one to take Roode’s power from him. Carter had assumed that was the end of it, as had Jay. Then the accident had taken place. Destiny didn’t cause that accident. Carter was certain that had been Bobby’s doing, even if he couldn’t prove it. Carter had been working on setting up protection stones in the greenhouse that belonged to Jay’s flower shop. Jay had been in the shop, ready to get started for the day. The sound of the bell that was connected to the door rang out, but Carter could barely hear that. He could barely hear the sound of two people talking, one of them being Jay. No, the dread came in what he could feel. It was as if all the air was being sucked out of the room, though the remaining air had an electric vitality. This wasn’t right. Something was terribly wrong. He tried to leave the greenhouse, but the door was locked. That door was never locked. Carter slammed his hand against the door, trying desperately to get it open. When it wouldn’t budge, Carter got even more nervous. He was strong, though not abnormally so, and usually it took one hard shoulder into a stuck door to open it. He could see an outline of two men, one a short-haired blonde who he assumed was his Jay. The second was a long-haired man, though Carter deep down already knew who it was. The long-haired brunette put a hand on Jay’s chest and then there was a large flash of light. As Jay crumpled to the ground, Carter let out a scream. The very foundation shook, a low-level earthquake breaking the door for him. The other form was gone, but his Jay lay on the ground. He was breathing, but it was shallow. Carter cradled his love in his arms as Harris and Adam entered. That led Carter to now, to the hell he was currently living in. Destiny hadn’t tried to take his Jay from him, Bobby had. Day-by-day, month-by-month Carter sat at Jay’s bedside. It seemed as if he’d never get better. Day-by-day, month-by-month Carter was driven closer to the brink of madness. So here Carter knelt, the room that had once been his and Jay’s living room. It no longer looked beautiful or well lived in, Carter hadn’t used it for much since the accident. Yet here he was, summoning circle painted on the floor as he sat on the edge of it. “Thgim fo nemod, rewop fo nemod, through wind and darkness I summon thee!” The candles Carter had lit blew out as if taken by a mighty wind. The sound of boots clicking against the floor was heard as a bulky man with long brown hair seemed to materialize, crossing to the edge of the circle. The figured tossed an apple into the air, catching it before his voice echoed in the room. “Whattya want, boy? I ain’t got time fer this.” “I…I heard yer the demon from which Bobby Roode got his powers, the demon who he betrayed in the end,” Carter spoke up, his voice cold. “He took somethin’ from me…I want revenge…” “Normally, kid, ah would ask if ya were sure. When ya go fer revenge, after all, ya better be prepared t’ dig two graves,” the figure spoke. He knelt and for the first time, Carter could see his face. He looked human, save for the two black orbs that sat in his face. Carter swore he had seen that face before, but wasn’t sure of it. “But against Bobbeh? Damn warlock had deserved what’s comin’ t’ him fer a long time. I’ll help ya.” Destiny wasn’t going to make Bobby Roode pay. Carter Lacroix was capable of that all on his own.
